7. A scoping review on what motivates individuals to illegally harvest wildlife

Abstract

Wildlife are natural resources utilised by many people around the world, both legally and illegally, for a wide range of purposes. This scoping review evaluates 82 studies nested in 75 manuscripts to provide an overview of the documented motivations and methodologies used, and to identify and analyse knowledge gaps in the motivations of illegal harvesters. Studies differ in what data is collected, often leaving out important contextual variables. We find 12 different motivations, frequently interlinked and multiple often play a role in the same harvesting incident. Motivations seemed to differ between taxa. Future research needs to move beyond a general description but recognise the complexity of the matter and allow for context-specific adjustments to facilitate a deeper understanding of these motivations.

8. Ethnozoological Review on the Trade, Human Alimentation, and Cultural Use of Skinks (Reptilia, Scincidae).

Abstract

Animals and their derivatives have been used for a wide range of purposes, including human consumption, clothing, tools, medicinal and magical-religious purposes, for most of human history, and as pets more recently. We reviewed the scientific literature and, using 134 references, provided an overview of how 400 species of skinks (23% of skink diversity) are used in the context of ethnozoology, especially as related to international and domestic trade and any cultural significance. Except for 10 species, all records of skinks involve domestic or international trade. Body weight, various activity pattern traits, and various microhabitats were found to be positive predictors of documented human use. In contrast, species found in less accessible microhabitats, such as semi-aquatic species, showed reduced odds of an ethnozoological role. A more comprehensive examination of trading patterns, cultural significance, or any other human use of skinks currently appears to be impossible, simply due to a lack of necessary information. In addition, data related to functional traits of skinks or a general understanding about the factors that influence skink usage or cultural significance are scarce or absent. We conclude that our understanding of factors that may influence human use of lizards in general and skinks in particular needs to be improved to create more effective species conservation and environmental education outcomes. Abstract

Our knowledge of the conservation status of reptiles, the most diverse class of terrestrial vertebrates, has improved dramatically over the past decade, but still lags behind that of the other tetrapod groups. Here, we conduct the first comprehensive evaluation (similar to 92% of the world's similar to 1714 described species) of the conservation status of skinks (Scincidae), a speciose reptile family with a worldwide distribution. Using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria, we report that similar to 20% of species are threatened with extinction, and nine species are Extinct or Extinct in the Wild. The highest levels of threat are evident in Madagascar and the Neotropics, and in the subfamilies Mabuyinae, Eugongylinae and Scincinae. The vast majority of threatened skink species were listed based primarily on their small geographic ranges (Criterion B, 83%; Criterion D2, 13%). Although the population trend of 42% of species was stable, 14% have declining populations. The key threats to skinks are habitat loss due to agriculture, invasive species, and biological resource use (e.g., hunting, timber harvesting). The distributions of 61% of species do not overlap with protected areas. Despite our improved knowledge of the conservation status of the world's skinks, 8% of species remain to be assessed, and 14% are listed as Data Deficient. The conservation status of almost a quarter of the world's skink species thus remains unknown. We use our updated knowledge of the conservation status of the group to develop and outline the priorities for the conservation assessment and management of the world's skink species.

16. Elektrische Impedantie Tomografie Geïntegreerd met Microfluïdica

Abstract

De onderzoeksgroep BDE (Biomedical Device Engineering) van IMO-IMOMEC doet onderzoek naar biosensoren en apparaten om deze sensoren uit te lezen. Eén van deze sensoren in ontwikkeling maakt gebruik van elektrische impedantie tomografie (EIT), een niet-invasieve beeldvormingstechniek aan de hand van de impedantie van het object. Het doel van deze masterproef is het verder ontwikkelen en optimaliseren van de sensor zodat de sensor met behulp van EIT een spatiaal tomografisch beeld van celgroei in functie van de tijd kan maken. Hierbij moet de huidige hardware en software verder afgewerkt worden. Ook moet het mogelijk zijn om op microfluïdische kanalen te meten door het ontwerpen van een flowcell. Dit resulteert in één sensorgeheel. De bestaande meetopstelling maakt gebruik van een micro-elektrode array, waarbij 100 elektroden in een matrixvorm zijn geplaatst. Deze opstelling is verder ontwikkeld en geoptimaliseerd zodat er testmetingen konden doorgaan. Vervolgens zijn er twee ontwerpen van de flowcell gemaakt en gesimuleerd in Creo Flow Analysis. Ten slotte is er een waterdichte behuizing ontworpen voor de sensor. Er kan geconcludeerd worden dat de hardware en software van de opstelling afgewerkt is. Doordat de opstelling 100 elektroden telt, kunnen er 342 metingen uitgevoerd worden over 25 mm². Dit zorgde voor een hogere precisie en gevoeligheid van 4 pixels/mm². Vervolgens is de eerste flowcell 3D-geprint en de tweede modulair opgebouwd. Beide kunnen mee geïntegreerd worden in de behuizing, wat resulteerde in één sensor.
