3. Structural and Magnetic Properties of Trigonal Iron

Abstract

First principles calculations of the electronic structure of trigonal iron were performed using density function theory. The results are used to predict lattice spacings, magnetic moments and elastic properties; these are in good agreement with experiment for both the bcc and fcc structures. We find however, that in extracting these quantities great care must be taken in interpreting numerical fits to the calculated total energies. In addition, the results for bulk iron give insight into the properties of thin iron films. Thin films grown on substrates with mismatched lattice constants often have non-cubic symmetry. If they are thicker than a few monolayers their electronic structure is similar to a bulk material with an appropriately distorted geometry, as in our trigonal calculations. We recast our bulk results in terms of an iron film grown on the (111) surface of an fcc substrate, and find the predicted strain energies and moments accurately reflect the trends for iron growth on a variety of substrates., Comment: 11 pages, RevTeX,4 tar'd,compressed, uuencoded Postscript figures

Abstract

The evaluation of Coulomb forces is a difficult task. The summations that are involved converge only conditionally and care has to be taken in selecting the appropriate procedure to define the limits. The Ewald method is a standard method for obtaining Coulomb forces, but this method is rather slow, since it depends on the square of the number of atoms in a unit cell. In this paper we have adapted the plane-wise summation method for the evaluation of Coulomb forces. Abstract

Prescribing errors can cause great harm to patients. In the Netherlands, it is estimated that 7000 preventable medication-related hospitals admissions occur annually, caused in many cases by prescribing errors. Elderly patients are at greatest risk, since this patient demographic is most likely to be prescribed multiple medications. Robust education on appropriate prescribing is essential for all clinicians with the authority to prescribe. Currently, some issues still require improvement in the Netherlands: a) education continues to focus heavily on basic pharmacology knowledge instead of patient related pharmacotherapy skills, b) an appropriate assessment procedure on pharmacotherapy knowledge and skills is often lacking, c) there is no mandatory requirement for physicians to maintain their knowledge and skills in the field of pharmacotherapy during their working career. In this article we discuss means to improve this situation, with the overall aim to ensure that all vulnerable elderly patients are in safe hands with each physician.
