Este trabalho visa investigar os hábitos e as competências leitoras de universitários, verificando as correlações entre essas variáveis e seu impacto sobre o desempenho acadêmico dos alunos. A pesquisa foi realizada com 60 estudantes de Administração, que preencheram questionário com perguntas sobre seus hábitos de leitura e um teste de compreensão leitora, estruturado segundo a técnica de cloze; foram coletadas também as médias dos alunos em todas as disciplinas cursadas. Confirmando as hipóteses de pesquisa, as três variáveis estudadasapresentaram significativa correlação. Dentre as conclusões, destaca-se a importância da leitura por lazer, que surgiu como fator mais fortemente associado à pontuação obtidano teste de compreensão de leitura e à média de notas do semestre. The aim of this work is to investigate reading habits and skills in undergraduate students, verifying the correlations between these variables and their impact on students' academic achievement. The research was carried out with 60 Management freshmen who filled out a questionnaire about their reading habits and a reading comprehension test, structured according to the cloze technique. Their grades in each subject were also collected. Confirming the hypotheses of the research, the main variables studied were found to be substantially correlate. Through the findings, we can highlight the importance of leisure reading, which emerged as the most associated factor to the score of the reading comprehension test and to semester grade point index. 22 1 127 148

The personal series of 12 nonfunctioning islet cell tumors (NFIT) of the pancreas is reported. The ultrasound and computed tomography features of NFIT are analyzed, and a few signs are identified that may be useful in the differential diagnosis vs ductal carcinoma. The necessity to complete the diagnostic work up by means of fine needle aspiration biopsy and cytologic smears is also emphasized.

Preliminary results will be presented for the second TTCP Environmental Signal Processing Exercise (TESPEX 2), which was conducted in June 1994 in shallow waters north of Darwin, Australia. There were two objectives: (1) demonstrate improvements in environmental source tracking [Collins et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 94, 3335 (1993)] (a single‐frequency, single‐hydrophone synthetic‐aperture tracking technique) by relying on a second, horizontally separated hydrophone, and (2) determine the horizontal resolution the environment provides to a vertical array through matched‐field processing [Perkins and Kuperman, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87, 1553 (1990)]. The approach was to first characterize the region by towing a high‐SNR source throughout the region and measure the replica fields using two vertical line arrays separated by several kilometers (one with 32 elements, the other 4 elements), and then to use this data to form the replicas needed to track the source as it traversed the region alone a variety of tracks. The measured replicas are supplemented by modeled replicas; the environment used in the modeling is determined by inverting the measured data. The Authors describe one case of pulmonary oncocytoma successfully treated by ablative surgery. The patient was a man aged 38 with an asymptomatic nodule, about the size of a walnut, in his right lower lobe. The whole right lower lobe was removes surgically, and histological examination resulted i na diagnosis of pulmonary oncocytoma. In the discussion, the authors point out that this type of malignancy is extremely rare, with only 7 cases reported in the more recent literature to the best of their knowledge.

Cystic islet cell tumors of the pancreas are extremely rare. The authors report their personal experience with two cases of nonfunctioning cystic endocrine neoplasms. The tumor was diagnosed preoperatively in one case by ultrasonography (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology, while in the other it was identified only in the surgical specimen after a clinical-radiologic diagnosis of pancreatic mucinous cystic tumor. Immunohistochemical assay showed positivity for the generic neuroendocrine markers (neuron specific enolase, or NSE, synaptophysin, and chromogranin A) in both cases and also for glucagon in one case. The neoplasms were resected by distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy and intermediate pancreatectomy respectively. Both patients are alive and recurrence-free 6 mo and 2.5 yr, respectively, after surgery. The authors also review the existing literature, discussing the pathogenesis of such tumors and the imaging techniques and surgical strategies adopted in their management.
