The article explores the usability of the geodiscussion administrative panel, an online tool aiding Public Participation Geographic Information Systems. This tool was specifically designed and developed for distribution in a Software as a service model, offering geodiscussion users the flexibility to leverage the tool without the need for substantial investments in expensive infrastructure or complex deployments. The research primarily centers on the geodiscussion administrative panel, a key component empowering organizers of public consultations in spatial planning to efficiently create and manage consultation processes. In contrast to previous studies that focused on the usability for consultation participants, this research uniquely targets individuals responsible for organizing and overseeing the consultation processes. A diverse array of usability research methods were employed, ranging from the creation of personas and conducting direct interviews based on test scenarios to non-invasive methods for recording user activities. The study involved 682 participants who had prior experience with public consultations across various public administration units and representatives from consulting firms. Given that the usability studies were an integral part of the geodiscussion administrative panel’s development process, the research team has the opportunity to influence the further implementation of the applied functionalities. This implies that insights gained from the research can actively shape and enhance the tool’s features as it progresses in its development cycle.

In this work, the results of investigations of polyurethane materials were presented. Innovative materials based on polyurethane-polyisocyanurate (PUR/PIR) foam were obtained. Different types of additives (flame retardants, aerogels – additives that decrease thermal conductivity) are used in the composition of PUR/PIR foam. Foams are a type of composite composed of two phases: continuous (polyurethane polymers) and dispersed (composed of gases). All samples have been tested for thermal parameters: thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity. Then they have been compared with each other and with a reference sample (RS) without additives. Based on the research, it was shown that innovative insulation materials were characterized by thermal conductivity λ in the range of 0.0254–0.0294 W/(m · K). The thermal properties of foams depending on the type and chemical composition of the material. Depending on the used substrates, their molar ratio, type, synthesis conditions, modifying agents and catalysts, a different polyurethane material is obtained.

Geo-questionnaires have been used in a variety of domains to collect public preferences, behavioural patterns, and spatially-explicit local knowledge, for academic research and environmental and urban planning. This paper provides an overview of the method focusing on the methodical characteristics of geo-questionnaires including software functions, types of collected data, and techniques of data analysis. The paper also discusses broader methodical issues related to the practice of deploying geo-questionnaires such as respondent selection and recruitment, representativeness, and data quality. The discussion of methodical issues is followed by an overview of the recent examples of geo-questionnaire applications in Poland, and the discussion of socio-technical aspects of geo-questionnaire use in spatial planning.

Geoweb methods offer an alternative to commonly used public participation methods in spatial planning. This paper discusses two such geoweb methods – geo-questionnaire and geo-discussion in the context of their initial applications within the spatial planning processes in Poland. The paper presents legal and organizational framework for the implementation of methods, provides their development details, and assesses insights gained from their deployment in the context of spatial planning in Poland. The analysed case studies encompass different spatial scales ranging from major cities in Poland (Poznań and Łódź) to suburban municipalities (Rokietnica and Swarzędz in Poznań Agglomeration). The studies have been substantiated by interviews with urban planners and local authorities on the use and value of Geoweb methods in public consultations.

The paper presents a review of contributions to the scientific discussion on modern methods and tools for public participation in urban planning. This discussion took place in Obrzycko near Poznań, Poland. The meeting was designed to allow for an ample discussion on the themes of public participatory geographic information systems, participatory geographic information systems, volunteered geographic information, citizen science, Geoweb, geographical information and communication technology, Geo-Citizen participation, geo-questionnaire, geo-discussion, GeoParticipation, Geodesign, Big Data and urban planning. Participants in the discussion were scholars from Austria, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the USA. A review of public participation in urban planning shows new developments in concepts and methods rooted in geography, landscape architecture, psychology, and sociology, accompanied by progress in geoinformation and communication technologies. The discussions emphasized that it is extremely important to state the conditions of symmetric cooperation between city authorities, urban planners and public participation representatives, social organizations, as well as residents.

Standardization of methods for data exchange in GIS has along history predating the creation of World Wide Web. The advent of World Wide Web brought the emergence of new solutions for data exchange and sharing including; more recently, standards proposed by the W3C for data exchange involving Semantic Web technologies and linked data. Despite the growing interest in integration, GIS and linked data are still two separate paradigms for describing and publishing spatial data on the Web. At the same time, both paradigms offer complementary ways of representing real world phenomena and means of analysis using different processing functions. The complementarity of linked data and GIS can be leveraged to synergize both paradigms resulting in richer data content and more powerful inferencing. The article presents an approach aimed at integrating linked data with GIS. The approach relies on the use of GIS tools for integration, verification and enrichment of linked data. The GIS tools are employed to enrich linked data by furnishing access to collection of data resources, defining relationship between data resources, and subsequently facilitating GIS data integration with linked data. The proposed approach is demonstrated with examples using data from DBpedia, OSM, and tools developed by the authors for standard GIS software.

Health care accessibility can be measured by the number of prospective patients who could reach a medical facility within a prescribed time limit. The representation of health care demand in estimating accessibility is an important consideration since different spatial aggregations of demand have different consequences with regard to accessibility estimates. This article examines the effects of aggregating population demand for primary health care, ranging from census tract to aggregated census block, on estimates of primary health care accessibility. Spatial representations of aggregated demand were incorporated into a location-allocation model in order to determine a measure of accessibility represented by the unmet demand for primary health care services. The model was implemented for the U.S. State of Idaho, based on the allocation of Idaho residents’ demand for primary health care to the state’s existing primary health care facilities. The results confirm a relationship between the level of demand aggregation and the level of potential accessibility. In case of a rural state such as Idaho the relationship is positive; higher levels of aggregation result in higher measures of accessibility.

BackgroundAtherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) including myocardial infarction, stroke and peripheral arterial disease continue to be major causes of premature death, disability and healthcare expenditure globally. Preventing the accumulation of cholesterol-containing atherogenic lipoproteins in the vessel wall is central to any healthcare strategy to prevent ASCVD. Advances in current concepts about reducing cumulative exposure to apolipoprotein B (apo B) cholesterol-containing lipoproteins and the emergence of novel therapies provide new opportunities to better prevent ASCVD. The present update of the World Heart Federation Cholesterol Roadmap provides a conceptual framework for the development of national policies and health systems approaches, so that potential roadblocks to cholesterol management and thus ASCVD prevention can be overcome.MethodsThrough a review of published guidelines and research papers since 2017, and consultation with a committee composed of experts in clinical management of dyslipidaemias and health systems research in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs), this Roadmap identifies (1) key principles to effective ASCVD prevention (2) gaps in implementation of these interventions (knowledge-practice gaps); (3) health system roadblocks to treatment of elevated cholesterol in LMICs; and (4) potential strategies for overcoming these.ResultsReducing the future burden of ASCVD will require diverse approaches throughout the life-course. These include: a greater focus on primordial prevention; availability of affordable cholesterol testing; availability of universal cholesterol screening for inherited dyslipidaemias; risk stratification moving beyond 10-year risk to look at lifetime risk with adequate risk estimators; wider availability of affordable cholesterol-lowering therapies which should include statins as essential medications globally; use of adequate doses of potent statin regimens; and combination therapies with ezetimibe or other therapies in order to attain and maintain robust reductions in LDL-C in those at highest risk. Continuing efforts are needed on health literacy for both the public and healthcare providers, utilising multi-disciplinary teams in healthcare and applications that quantify both ASCVD risk and benefits of treatment as well as increased adherence to therapies.ConclusionsThe adverse effects of LDL-cholesterol and apo B containing lipoprotein exposure are cumulative and result in ASCVD. These are preventable by implementation of different strategies, aimed at efficiently tackling atherosclerosis at different stages throughout the human life-course. Preventive strategies should therefore be updated to implement health policy, lifestyle changes and when needed pharmacotherapies earlier with investment in, and a shift in focus towards, early preventive strategies that preserve cardiovascular health rather than treat the consequences of ASCVD.

Background and Aims INTERASPIRE is an international study of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, designed to measure if guideline standards for secondary prevention and cardiac rehabilitation are being achieved in a timely manner. Methods Between 2020 and 2023, adults hospitalized in the preceding 6–24 months with incident or recurrent CHD were sampled in 14 countries from all 6 World Health Organization regions and invited for a standardized interview and examination. Direct age and sex standardization was used for country-level prevalence estimation. Results Overall, 4548 (21.1% female) CHD patients were interviewed a median of 1.05 (interquartile range.76–1.45) years after index hospitalization. Among all participants, 24.6% were obese (40.7% centrally). Only 38.6% achieved a blood pressure (BP) < 130/80 mmHg and 16.6% a LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) of <1.4 mmol/L. Of those smoking at hospitalization, 48% persisted at interview. Of those with known diabetes, 55.2% achieved glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) of <7.0%. A further 9.8% had undetected diabetes and 26.9% impaired glucose tolerance. Females were less likely to achieve the targets: BP (females 36.8%, males 38.9%), LDL-C (females 12.0%, males 17.9%), and HbA1c in diabetes (females 47.7%, males 57.5%). Overall, just 9.0% (inter-country range 3.8%–20.0%) reported attending cardiac rehabilitation and 1.0% (inter-country range.0%–2.4%) achieved the study definition of optimal guideline adherence. Conclusions INTERASPIRE demonstrates inadequate and heterogeneous international implementation of guideline standards for secondary prevention in the first year after CHD hospitalization, with geographic and sex disparity. Investment aimed at reducing between-country and between-individual variability in secondary prevention will promote equity in global efforts to reduce the burden of CHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the geriatric population, the risk of cardiometabolic diseases is strongly influenced by comorbidities. The aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of depression among hospitalized patients with heart failure (HF) and to assess the relation between physical performance and depression in this population. Methods: We included consecutive hospitalized patients with HF aged >65 years. The depression symptoms were evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), the physical performance was assessed using the grip strength measurements, the Back Scratch Test, the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), the Five Times Sit to Stand Test (5 × SST), and the 6 min walk test. Results: We included 206 patients (134 females and 72 males, median age 82 years (77–86) years). Altogether, 33% of participants had signs of depression. The association was found between depression severity and economic status (p = 0.001), stressful events (p = 0.005), self-reported general health status (p = 0.001), and heart failure severity assessed by the New York Heart Association class (NYHA), p = 0.003. The Back Scratch Test, the TUGT, and the 5xSST were associated with depression severity in a univariable regression analysis (β coefficient 0.04 [95% CI 0.00–0.08], 0.20 [95% CI 0.12–0.27], 0.18 [95% CI 0.07–0.27], respectively); however, when adjusted for co-factors, the TUGT and the 5xSST (0.17 [95% CI 0.08–0.26] and 0.14 [95% CI 0.02–0.26], respectively) were significantly related to the GDS score. Grip strength and the 6 min walk test were not related to the GDS score in the univariable nor multivariable analysis. These findings were confirmed in the logistic analyses. Conclusions: Our study indicated a high incidence of depression among elderly hospitalized patients with heart failure. Depression severity in older patients with HF is related to physical performance decline as assessed by the Timed Up and Go Test and the Five Times Sit to Stand Test. Background: Elevated lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] concentrations are linked mainly to genetic factors. The relationship between Lp(a) and other lipid disorders or cardiovascular (CV) risk factors has been less investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of lipid disorders and other CV risk factors according to Lp(a) concentrations. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 200 primary-care patients who had not been diagnosed with CV disease was conducted. The following risk factors were assessed: older age, history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia, smoking, lack of physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. The following lipid parameters were measured: total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and small, dense LDL (sdLDL-C). Patients were divided into two groups based on their Lp(a) concentrations: <30 mg/dL and ≥30 mg/dL. Results: In 70% of patients, the Lp(a) concentration was <30 mg/dL. The concentrations of lipid parameters did not differ between the groups. The rate of patients with sdLDL-C >1.0 mmol/L was higher in the low-Lp(a) group (10.0 vs. 1.7%, p = 0.04), with no significant differences regarding the other analyzed lipid disorders (p > 0.05). Both in the low- and high-Lp(a) group, most patients had two other abnormal lipid factors (45.0% and 60.0%, respectively). The distribution of impaired lipid parameters (p = 0.41) and other CV risk factors (p = 0.16) was similar in both groups. There was a lower rate of patients >60 years old (15.0% vs. 32.9%, p = 0.01) and with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (46.7% vs. 63.6%, p = 0.026) in the high-Lp(a) group, and previously diagnosed hyperlipidemia was more prevalent in this group (65.0% vs. 47.1%, p = 0.02). The occurrence of other cardiovascular risk factors did not differ significantly between the Lp(a) groups (p > 0.05). In the high-Lp(a) group, the highest proportion (25.0%) had two CV risk factors, and in the low-Lp(a) group, 31.4% had four CV risk factors. Conclusions: An elevated Lp(a) concentration is not related to the number of conventional CV risk factors or other impairment major lipid parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper proposes a joint use of two global sensitivity analysis methods to evaluate the influence of model inputs on spatially explicit outputs. The analysis is conducted on spatial outputs of geodiversity assessment. First, the screening method is used to identify inputs with low importance and interactions, which can be discarded in later analysis. A simplified model is compared with a complete model using the mean and variance calculated on spatial outputs to evaluate outcome uncertainty. Finally, the variance decomposition method computes two sensitivity index maps per input. The results are mapped using bivariate classification, allowing for the simultaneous identification of regions with higher geodiversity scores and their corresponding variability. The research reveals that the streamlined approach preserves the overall patterns of outcome uncertainty and sensitivity observed in an original model while simultaneously reducing the number of outcome maps to interpret. Additionally, bivariate mapping proves efficient in concurrently depicting spatial sensitivity and interaction effects. The analytic efficiencies afforded by the presented approach and bivariate mapping enhance the operational knowledge of spatially explicit uncertainty and sensitivity analysis by simplifying the computational procedure and offering an alternative way of visualizing and interpreting input factors driving the sensitivity of model output. KEY POLICY HIGHLIGHTS: Spatially explicit uncertainty and sensitivity analysis extends the geodiversity assessment methods and comprises the next step in improving the accuracy of geodiversity assessments for land management decisions. An integrated uncertainty and sensitivity analysis helps focus on high-priority areas (high sensitivity and low uncertainty) to improve assessment reliability. The uncertainty and sensitivity analysis in models with spatially explicit output results depicted on maps can help reduce field research expenses by identifying a particular area or a specific natural component that warrants better-quality data. Bivariate maps employed to visualize the results of spatially explicit uncertainty and sensitivity analysis can potentially reduce the cognitive effort of visually switching between multiple single-variable (theme) maps. The core promise of land use and zoning reforms is to metamorphose the car-dominated urban spatial structure—which is the legacy of use-based, modernist land use and transportation planning of the past century—into human-centered forms of urbanism characterized by walkable, accessible, transit-friendly, ecologically sustainable, equitable and resilient urban fabrics. This empirical study aims to measure the effectiveness of a reformed city planning framework, known as the form-based code (FBC), in terms of optimizing journey-to-work trips. To this end, the study integrates geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis techniques with linear programming, including a variant of the transportation problem, to evaluate aggregated and disaggregated commuting efficiency metrics. Utilizing the zonal data (ZDATA) for the Orlando metropolitan region, the proposed models account for the commuting terrains associated with three major workforce cohorts, segmented along key industry sectors, within the context of three urban growth scenarios. The findings suggest that the FBC system holds the potential to enhance commuting patterns through various place-based strategies, including juxtaposing, densifying, and diversifying employment and residential activities at the local level. At the regional level, however, the resultant urban form falls short of an ideal jobs–housing arrangement across major industry sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The quality of life of patients with coronary heart disease is extremely important for their treatment. The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life of patients with coronary artery disease, considering education and compliance with medical recommendations regarding lifestyle changes, as well as the presence of selected cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: The study involved 763 patients from 11 Polish cardiology centers. The presented material is part of the multicenter POLASPIRE II study. Patients completed a standardized questionnaire EuroQol 5D-5Lm. A medical interview was conducted with each patient. All patients had their body weight and height measured and BMI determined. Results: The quality of life of patients was better in men, younger people, those with lower body weight and those who followed preventive recommendations and intensified their physical activity. Most of the examined patients complied with the medical recommendations regarding lifestyle changes after a cardiac incident, but they mainly concerned dietary modifications. There was still a large group of patients who did not comply with the recommendations, e.g., regarding increasing physical activity. Conclusions: The assessment of quality of life depended on many factors, such as gender, body weight and compliance with medical recommendations. The health education of patients in the presented study group was not sufficient. Therefore, there is a need for better education regarding the benefits of following medical recommendations in terms of leading a healthy lifestyle, which consequently improves its quality and duration. This study compares adjacent and bivariate maps in communicating variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) results for a geodiversity assessment spatial multi-criteria model and examines the influence of prior exposure to geodiversity and map reading skills on interpretation. It analyzes the quality of map interpretation, confidence levels, and map communication effectiveness. The findings indicate that there is no significant difference in the quality of map interpretation or confidence levels between the two map types. However, there are nuanced differences in interpretive patterns, suggesting the need for further investigation into factors affecting map interpretation. Adjacent maps are more effective in identifying factors linked to uncertainty in high geodiversity values, while bivariate maps excel in understanding spatial variability. Prior exposure to geodiversity and map reading skills do not significantly impact interpretation quality or confidence levels. Future research could explore other factors influencing map effectiveness and explore the cognitive processes underlying map interpretation. Understanding these processes could lead to more effective strategies for communicating the results of a GSA for spatial models through maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
