Abstract

Since 2017, applicants with an academic degree in natural sciences or in the field of “life sciences” have the opportunity to participate in the three years international PhD program “Epidemiology & Clinical Research” at the University of Duisburg-Essen.The PhD program consists of an accompanying program comprising 300 teaching units (one teaching unit of 45 minutes each) and the work on own research projects. The accompanying course program focuses on lectures and practical exercises in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistical analysis programs, medicine for non-physicians, and soft skills courses. The dissertation can be submitted as a monograph or as a compilation of three peer-reviewed publications (including at least two first authorships). Finally, the PhD program concludes with the successful defense of the dissertation.

13. Cellulose Nanocrystal Reinforcement of Nylon 6 Films and Fibres

Abstract

Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNC) are abundant, renewable, and highly crystalline by-products from the forestry industry. CNCs are known to have excellent thermal and mechanical properties which have been exploited in a variety of applications across numerous fields, such as drug delivery, photonics, and in films. With the focus of integrating CNC into functional materials, there have been a multitude of methods for the surface modification of CNC and for incorporation in polymer composites. It is known that CNC can increase the mechanical strength of many polymers, however, Polyamides (including Nylon 6) have not yet been thoroughly investigated. This thesis describes the effects of CNC in Nylon 6 composites and the influence of CNC on the mechanical strength and characteristics of the polymer. Nanofibers were produced using solution electrospinning and freestanding thin films were produced using spin coating. Further, a comparison of the reinforcing impact of CNC in randomly distributed and aligned nanofibres, and the effect of each of the electrospinning processing parameters on fibre diameter and alignment is described. Furthermore, the influence of CNC on the crystallization of Nylon 6 in both thin films and electrospun fibres is also studied. Further modification of CNC with diazonium salts and with an alkylamine group via diazonium-mediated surface functionalization was performed. Both the unmodified and modified CNC was incorporated into Nylon 6 solutions and spin coated into freestanding thin films. The modification of CNC with hydrophobic aryl and alkyl groups using diazonium chemistry provides a quick and facile route towards increased interactions with hydrophobic polymers. Due to the wide range of applications that CNC has in functional materials, it is crucial to understand the factors attributed to changes in the mechanical strength of CNC-polymer composites, and to develop methods that effectively yield and control high quality nanocomposites. By detailing the effects of CNC in polymer composites, recommendations can be established for industry to use as guidelines when using CNC in Polyamides. The large reinforcing impact of a bio-renewable resource at low loadings is an exciting route for stronger materials and a stepping-stone towards more sustainable products.

Abstract

Introduction The differential associations of beer, wine, and spirit consumption on cardiovascular risk found in observational studies may be confounded by diet. We described and compared dietary intake and diet quality according to alcoholic beverage preference in European elderly. Methods From the Consortium on Health and Ageing: Network of Cohorts in Europe and the United States (CHANCES), seven European cohorts were included, i.e. four sub-cohorts from EPIC-Elderly, the SENECA Study, the Zutphen Elderly Study, and the Rotterdam Study. armonized data of 29,423 elderly participants from 14 European countries were analyzed. Baseline data on consumption of beer, wine, and spirits, and dietary intake were collected with questionnaires. Diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI). Intakes and scores across categories of alcoholic beverage preference (beer, wine, spirit, no preference, non-consumers) were adjusted for age, sex, socio-economic status, self reported prevalent diseases, and lifestyle factors. Cohort-specific mean intakes and scores were calculated as well as weighted means combining all cohorts. Results In 5 of 7 cohorts, persons with a wine preference formed the largest group. After multivariate adjustment, persons with a wine preference tended to have a higher HDI score and intake of healthy foods in most cohorts, but differences were small. The weighted estimates of all cohorts combined revealed that non-consumers had the highest fruit and vegetable intake, followed by wine consumers. Non-consumers and persons with no specific preference had a higher HDI score, spirit consumers the lowest. However, overall diet quality as measured by HDI did not differ greatly across alcoholic beverage preference categories. Discussion This study using harmonized data from similar to 30,000 elderly from 14 European countries showed that, after multivariate adjustment, dietary habits and diet quality did not differ greatly according to alcoholic beverage preference.

Abstract

ObjectiveSince inadequate food consumption patterns during adolescence are not only linked with the occurrence of obesity in youth but also with the subsequent risk of developing diseases in adulthood, the establishment and maintenance of a healthy diet early in life is of great public health importance. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to describe and evaluate the food consumption of a well-characterized sample of European adolescents against food-based dietary guidelines for the first time.DesignThe HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study is a cross-sectional study, whose main objective was to obtain comparable data on a variety of nutritional and health-related parameters in adolescents aged 12·5–17·5 years.SettingTen cities in Europe.SubjectsThe initial sample consisted of more than 3000 European adolescents. Among these, 1593 adolescents (54 % female) had sufficient and plausible dietary data on energy and food intakes from two 24 h recalls using the HELENA-DIAT software.ResultsFood intake of adolescents in Europe is not optimal compared with the two food-based dietary guidelines, Optimized Mixed Diet and Food Guide Pyramid, examined in this study. Adolescents eat half of the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables and less than two-thirds of the recommended amount of milk (and milk products), but consume much more meat (and meat products), fats and sweets than recommended. However, median total energy intake may be estimated to be nearly in line with the recommendations.ConclusionThe results urge the need to improve the dietary habits of adolescents in order to maintain health in later life.

Abstract

Introduction: The differential associations of beer, wine, and spirit consumption on cardiovascular risk. Alcoholic beverage preference and dietary habits in elderly across Europe: Analyses within the Consortium on Health and Ageing: Network of Cohorts in Europe and the United States (CHANCES) project found in observational studies may be confounded by diet. We described and compared dietary intake and diet quality according to alcoholic beverage preference in European elderly. Methods: From the Consortium on Health and Ageing: Network of Cohorts in Europe and the United States (CHANCES), seven European cohorts were included, i.e. four sub-cohorts from EPIC-Elderly, the SENECA Study, the Zutphen Elderly Study, and the Rotterdam Study. Harmonized data of 29,423 elderly participants from 14 European countries were analyzed. Baseline data on consumption of beer, wine, and spirits, and dietary intake were collected with questionnaires. Diet quality was assessed using the Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI). Intakes and scores across categories of alcoholic beverage preference (beer, wine, spirit, no preference, non-consumers) were adjusted for age, sex, socio-economic status, self-reported prevalent diseases, and lifestyle factors. Cohort-specific mean intakes and scores were calculated as well as weighted means combining all cohorts. Results: In 5 of 7 cohorts, persons with a wine preference formed the largest group. After multivariate adjustment, persons with a wine preference tended to have a higher HDI score and intake of healthy foods in most cohorts, but differences were small. The weighted estimates of all cohorts combined revealed that non-consumers had the highest fruit and vegetable intake, followed by wine consumers. Non-consumers and persons with no specific preference had a higher HDI score, spirit consumers the lowest. However, overall diet quality as measured by HDI did not differ greatly across alcoholic beverage preference categories. Discussion: This study using harmonized data from ~30,000 elderly from 14 European countries showed that, after multivariate adjustment, dietary habits and diet quality did not differ greatly according to alcoholic beverage preference. © 2016 Sluik et al. Abstract

Background/objectives: Unhealthy diet has been proposed as one of the main reasons for the high mortality in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (FSU) but individual-level effects of dietary habits on health in the region are sparse. We examined the associations between the healthy diet indicator (HDI) and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in three CEE/FSU populations., Subjects/methods: Dietary intakes of foods and nutrients, assessed by food frequency questionnaire in the Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial Factors in Eastern Europe (HAPIEE) cohort study, were used to construct the HDI, which follows the WHO 2003 dietary recommendations. Among 18 559 eligible adult participants (age range: 45-69 years) without a history of major chronic diseases at baseline, 1209 deaths occurred over a mean follow-up of 7 years. The association between HDI and mortality was estimated by Cox regression., Results: After adjusting for covariates, HDI was inversely and statistically significantly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality, but not with other cause-specific and all-cause mortality in the pooled sample. Hazard ratios per one standard deviation (s.d.) increase in HDI score were 0.95 (95% confidence interval=0.89-1.00, P=0.068), 0.90 (0.81-0.99, P=0.030) and 0.85 (0.74-0.97, P=0.018) for all-cause, CVD and CHD mortality, respectively. Population attributable risk fractions for low HDI were 2.9% for all-cause, 14.2% for CVD and 10.7% for CHD mortality., Conclusions: These findings support the hypothesis that unhealthy diet has had a role in the high CVD mortality in Eastern Europe.

Abstract

Objective: Since inadequate food consumption patterns during adolescence are not only linked with the occurrence of obesity in youth but also with the subsequent risk of developing diseases in adulthood, the establishment and maintenance of a healthy diet early in life is of great public health importance. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to describe and evaluate the food consumption of a well-characterized sample of European adolescents against food-based dietary guidelines for the first time., Design: The HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study is a cross-sectional study, whose main objective was to obtain comparable data on a variety of nutritional and health-related parameters in adolescents aged 12·5-17·5 years., Setting: Ten cities in Europe., Subjects: The initial sample consisted of more than 3000 European adolescents. Among these, 1593 adolescents (54 % female) had sufficient and plausible dietary data on energy and food intakes from two 24 h recalls using the HELENA-DIAT software., Results: Food intake of adolescents in Europe is not optimal compared with the two food-based dietary guidelines, Optimized Mixed Diet and Food Guide Pyramid, examined in this study. Adolescents eat half of the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables and less than two-thirds of the recommended amount of milk (and milk products), but consume much more meat (and meat products), fats and sweets than recommended. However, median total energy intake may be estimated to be nearly in line with the recommendations., Conclusion: The results urge the need to improve the dietary habits of adolescents in order to maintain health in later life.
