Debris discs are our best means to probe the outer regions of planetary systems. Many studies assume that planets lie at the inner edges of debris discs, akin to Neptune and the Kuiper Belt, and use the disc morphologies to constrain those otherwise-undetectable planets. However, this produces a degeneracy in planet mass and semimajor axis. We investigate the effect of a sculpting planet on the radial surface-density profile at the disc inner edge, and show that this degeneracy can be broken by considering the steepness of the edge profile. Like previous studies, we show that a planet on a circular orbit ejects unstable debris and excites surviving material through mean-motion resonances. For a non-migrating, circular-orbit planet, in the case where collisions are negligible, the steepness of the disc inner edge depends on the planet-to-star mass ratio and the initial-disc excitation level. We provide a simple analytic model to infer planet properties from the steepness of ALMA-resolved disc edges. We also perform a collisional analysis, showing that a purely planet-sculpted disc would be distinguishable from a purely collisional disc and that, whilst collisions flatten planet-sculpted edges, they are unlikely to fully erase a planet's signature. Finally, we apply our results to ALMA-resolved debris discs and show that, whilst many inner edges are too steep to be explained by collisions alone, they are too flat to arise through completed sculpting by non-migrating, circular-orbit planets. Catastrophically evaporating rocky planets provide a unique opportunity to study the composition of small planets. The surface composition of these planets can be constrained via modelling their comet-like tails of dust. In this work, we present a new self-consistent model of the dusty tails: we physically model the trajectory of the dust grains after they have left the gaseous outflow, including an on-the-fly calculation of the dust cloud's optical depth. We model two catastrophically evaporating planets: KIC 1255b and K2-22b. For both planets, we find the dust is likely composed of magnesium-iron silicates (olivine and pyroxene), consistent with an Earth-like composition. We constrain the initial dust grain sizes to be $\sim$ 1.25-1.75 $\mu$m and the average (dusty) planetary mass-loss rate to be $\sim$ 3$M_\oplus \mathrm{Gyr^{-1}}$. Our model shows the origin of the leading tail of dust of K2-22b is likely a combination of the geometry of the outflow and a low radiation pressure force to stellar gravitational force ratio. We find the optical depth of the dust cloud to be a factor of a few in the vicinity of the planet. Our composition constraint supports the recently suggested idea that the dusty outflows of these planets go through a greenhouse effect-nuclear winter cycle, which gives origin to the observed transit depth time variability. Close-in super-Earths are the most abundant exoplanets known. It has been hypothesized that they form in the inner regions of protoplanetary discs, out of the dust that may accumulate at the boundary between the inner region susceptible to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) and an MRI-dead zone further out. In Paper I we presented a model for the viscous inner disc which includes heating due to both irradiation and MRI-driven accretion; thermal and non-thermal ionization; dust opacities; and dust effects on ionization. Here we examine how the inner disc structure varies with stellar, disc and dust parameters. For high accretion rates and small dust grains, we find that: (1) the main sources of ionization are thermal ionization and thermionic and ion emission; (2) the disc features a hot, high-viscosity inner region, and a local gas pressure maximum at the outer edge of this region (in line with previous studies); and (3) an increase in the dust-to-gas ratio pushes the pressure maximum outwards. Consequently, dust can accumulate in such inner discs without suppressing the MRI, with the amount of accumulation depending on the viscosity in the MRI-dead regions. Conversely, for low accretion rates and large dust grains, there appears to be an additional steady-state solution in which: (1) stellar X-rays become the main source of ionization; (2) MRI-viscosity is high throughout the disc; and (3) the pressure maximum ceases to exist. Short-period super-Earth-sized planets are common. Explaining how they form near their present orbits requires understanding the structure of the inner regions of protoplanetary discs. Previous studies have argued that the hot inner protoplanetary disc is unstable to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) due to thermal ionization of potassium, and that a local gas pressure maximum forms at the outer edge of this MRI-active zone. Here we present a steady-state model for inner discs accreting viscously, primarily due to the MRI. The structure and MRI-viscosity of the inner disc are fully coupled in our model; moreover, we account for many processes omitted in previous such models, including disc heating by both accretion and stellar irradiation, vertical energy transport, realistic dust opacities, dust effects on disc ionization and non-thermal sources of ionization. For a disc around a solar-mass star with a standard gas accretion rate ($\dot{M}$$\sim$$10^{-8}$M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$) and small dust grains, we find that the inner disc is optically thick, and the accretion heat is primarily released near the midplane. As a result, both the disc midplane temperature and the location of the pressure maximum are only marginally affected by stellar irradiation, and the inner disc is also convectively unstable. As previously suggested, the inner disc is primarily ionized through thermionic and potassium ion emission from dust grains, which, at high temperatures, counteract adsorption of free charges onto grains. The latest advances in the design of vehicles with the adaptive level of automation pose new challenges in the vehicle-driver interaction. Safety requirements underline the need to explore optimal cockpit architectures with regard to driver cognitive and perceptual workload, eyes-off-the-road time and situation awareness. We propose to integrate existing task analysis approaches into system architecture evaluation for the early-stage design optimization. We built the discrete-event simulation tool and applied it within the multi-sensory (sight, sound, touch) cockpit design industrial project.

Unraveling the 3D physical structure, the temperature and density distribution, of protoplanetary discs is an essential step if we are to confront simulations of embedded planets or dynamical instabilities. In this paper we focus on Submillimeter Array observations of the edge-on source, Gomez's Hamburger, believed to host an over-density hypothesised to be a product of gravitational instability in the disc, GoHam b. We demonstrate that, by leveraging the well characterised rotation of a Keplerian disc to deproject observations of molecular lines in position-position-velocity space into disc-centric coordinates, we are able to map out the emission distribution in the (r, z) plane and (x, y, z) space. We show that 12CO traces an elevated layer of $z\,/\,r \sim 0.3$, while 13CO traces deeper in the disc at $z\,/\,r \lesssim 0.2$. We localize emission associated with GoHam b, finding it at deprojected radius of approximately 500 au and at polar angle of +\- 30 degrees from the disc major axis. At the spatial resolution of $\sim 1.5^{\prime\prime}$, GoHam b is spatially unresolved, with an upper limit to its radius of $<190$~au., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Today, driverless cars, as a new technology that allows a more accessible, dynamic and intelligent form of Shared Mobility, are expected to revolutionize urban transportation. One of the conceivable mobility services based on driverless cars is shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs). This service could merge cabs, carsharing, and ridesharing systems into a singular transportation mode. However, the success and competitiveness of future SAV services depend on their operational models, which are linked intrinsically to the service configuration and fleet specification. In addition, any change in operational models will result in a different demand. Using a comprehensive framework of SAV simulation in a multi-modal dynamic demand system with integrated SAV user taste variation, this study evaluates the performance of various SAV fleets and vehicle capacities serving travelers across the Rouen Normandie metropolitan area in France. Also, the impact of ridesharing and rebalancing strategies on service performance is investigated.Research results suggest that the performance of SAV is strongly correlated with the fleet size and the strategy of individual or shared rides. Further analysis indicates that for the pricing scheme proposed in this study (i.e., 20% lower for ridesharing scenario), the standard 4-seats car with shared ride remains the best option among all scenarios. The results also underline that enabling vehicle-rebalancing strategies may have an important effect on both user and service-related metrics. The estimated SAV average and maximum driven distance prove the importance of vehicle range and charging station deployment.

The first commercial fleets of Robo-Taxis will be on the road soon. Today important efforts are made to anticipate future Robo-Taxi services. Fleet size is one of the key parameters considered in the planning phase of service design and configuration. Based on multi-agent approaches, the fleet size can be explored using dynamic demand response simulations. Time and cost are the most common variables considered in such simulation approaches. However, personal taste variation can affect the demand and consequently the required fleet size. In this paper, we explore the impact of user trust and willingness-to-use on the Robo-Taxi fleet size. This research is based upon simulating the transportation system of the Rouen-Normandie metropolitan area in France using MATSim, a multi-agent activity-based simulator. A local survey is made in order to explore the variation of user trust and their willingness-to-use future Robo-Taxis according to the sociodemographic attributes. Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) are the next major evolution in urban mobility. This technology has attracted much interest of car manufacturers aiming at playing a role as transportation network companies (TNCs) in order to gain benefits per kilometer and per ride. The majority of future SAVs will most probably be electric. It is therefore important to understand how limited vehicle range and the configuration of charging infrastructure will affect the performance of shared autonomous electric vehicle (SAEV) services. We aim to explore the impacts of charging station placement, charging type (rapid charging, battery swapping) as well as vehicle range onto service efficiency and customer experience in terms of service availability and response time. We perform an agent-based simulation of SAEVs across the Rouen Normandie metropolitan area in France. The simulation process features impact assessment by considering dynamic demand responsive to the network and traffic. Research results suggest that the performance of SAEVs is strongly correlated to the charging infrastructure. Importantly, faster charging infrastructure and optimized placement of charging locations in order to minimize distances between demand hubs and charging stations result in a higher performance. Further analysis indicates the importance of dispersing charging stations across the service area and how this affects service effectiveness. The results also underline that SAEV battery capacity has to be carefully selected to avoid the overlaps between demand and charging peak times. Finally, the simulation results show that by providing battery swapping infrastructure the performance indicators of SAEV service are significantly improved.

We explore in situ formation and subsequent evolution of close-in super-Earths and mini-Neptunes. We adopt a steady-state inner protoplanetary gas disc structure that arises from viscous accretion due to the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). We consider the evolution of dust in the inner disc, including growth, radial drift and fragmentation, and find that dust particles that radially drift into the inner disc fragment severely due to the MRI-induced turbulence. This result has two consequences: (1) radial drift of grains within the inner disc is quenched, leading to an enhancement of dust in the inner regions which scales as dust-to-gas-mass-flux-ratio at ~1 AU; (2) however, despite this enhancement, planetesimal formation is impeded by the small grain size. Nevertheless, assuming that planetary cores are present in the inner disc, we then investigate the accretion of atmospheres onto cores and their subsequent photoevaporation. We then compare our results to the observed exoplanet mass-radius relationship. We find that: (1) the low gas surface densities and high temperatures in the inner disc reduce gas accretion onto cores compared to the minimum mass solar nebula, preventing the cores from growing into hot Jupiters, in agreement with the data; (2) however, our predicted envelope masses are still typically larger than observed ones. Finally, we sketch a qualitative picture of how grains may grow and planetesimals form in the inner disc if grain effects on the ionization levels and the MRI and the back-reaction of the dust on the gas (both neglected in our calculations) are accounted for., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Simulations of massive star formation predict the formation of discs with significant substructure, such as spiral arms and clumps due to fragmentation. Here we present a semi-analytic framework for producing synthetic observations of discs with substructure, in order to determine their observability in interferometric observations. Unlike post-processing of hydrodynamical models, the speed inherent to our approach permits us to explore a large parameter space of star and disc parameters, and thus constrain properties for real observations. We compute synthetic dust continuum and molecular line observations probing different disc masses, distances, inclinations, thermal structures, dust distributions, and number and orientation of spirals and fragments. With appropriate spatial and kinematic filtering applied, our models predict that ALMA observations of massive YSOs at <5 kpc distances should detect spirals in both gas and dust in strongly self-gravitating discs (i.e. discs with up to two spiral arms and strong kinematic perturbations). Detecting spirals will be possible in discs of arbitrary inclination, either by directly spatially resolving them for more face-on discs (inclinations up to ~50 degrees), or through a kinematic signature otherwise. The large population of Earth to super-Earth sized planets found very close to their host stars has motivated consideration of $in$ $situ$ formation models. In particular, Inside-Out Planet Formation is a scenario in which planets coalesce sequentially in the disk, at the local gas pressure maximum near the inner boundary of the dead zone. The pressure maximum arises from a decline in viscosity, going from the active innermost disk (where thermal ionization of alkalis yields high viscosities via the magneto-rotational instability (MRI)) to the adjacent dead zone (where the MRI is quenched). Previous studies of the pressure maximum, based on $\alpha$-disk models, have assumed ad hoc values for the viscosity parameter $\alpha$ in the active zone, ignoring the detailed physics of the MRI. Here we explicitly couple the MRI criteria to the $\alpha$-disk equations, to find steady-state (constant accretion rate) solutions for the disk structure. We consider the effects of both Ohmic and ambipolar resistivities, and find solutions for a range of disk accretion rates ($\dot{M}$ = $10^{-10}$ - $10^{-8}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$/yr), stellar masses ($M_{\ast}$ = 0.1 - 1 ${\rm M}_{\odot}$), and fiducial values of the $non$-MRI $\alpha$-viscosity in the dead zone ($\alpha_{\rm {DZ}} = 10^{-5}$ - $10^{-3}$). We find that: (1) A midplane pressure maximum forms radially $outside$ the inner boundary of the dead zone; (2) Hall resistivity dominates near the midplane in the inner disk, which may explain why close-in planets do $not$ form in $\sim$50% of systems; (3) X-ray ionization can be competitive with thermal ionization in the inner disk, because of the low surface density there in steady-state; and (4) our inner disk solutions are viscously unstable to surface density perturbations., Comment: 34 pages, 28 figures, 3 appendices. We use 57 recently found topological satellites of Broucke-Hadjidemetriou-Henon's periodic orbits with values of the topological exponent $k$ ranging from $k$ = 3 to $k$ = 58 to plot the angular momentum $L$ as a function of the period $T$, with both $L$ and $T$ rescaled to energy $E=-\frac12$. Upon plotting $L(T/k)$ we find that all our solutions fall on a curve that is virtually indiscernible by naked eye from the $L(T)$ curve for non-satellite solutions. The standard deviation of the satellite data from the sixth-order polynomial fit to the progenitor data is $\sigma = 0.13$. This regularity supports Henon's 1976 conjecture that the linearly stable Broucke-Hadjidemetriou-Henon orbits are also perpetually, or Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser stable.

We present a numerical solution of the quantum Lenard-Balescu equation using a spectral method, namely an expansion in Laguerre polynomials. This method exactly conserves both particles and energy and facilitates the integration over the dielectric function. To demonstrate the method, we solve the equilibration problem for a spatially homogeneous one-component plasma with various initial conditions. Unlike the more usual Landau/Fokker-Planck system, this method requires no input Coulomb logarithm; the logarithmic terms in the collision integral arise naturally from the equation along with the non-logarithmic order-unity terms. The spectral method can also be used to solve the Landau equation and a quantum version of the Landau equation in which the integration over the wavenumber requires only a lower cutoff. We solve these problems as well and compare them with the full Lenard-Balescu solution in the weak-coupling limit. Finally, we discuss the possible generalization of this method to include spatial inhomogeneity and velocity anisotropy.
