1. Phase stable net acceleration of electrons from a two-stage optical accelerator

Abstract: In this article we demonstrate the net acceleration of relativistic electrons using a direct, in-vacuum interaction with a laser. In the experiment, an electron beam from a conventional accelerator is first energy modulated at optical frequencies in an inverse-free-electron-laser and bunched in a chicane. This is followed by a second stage optical accelerator to obtain net acceleration. The optical phase between accelerator stages is monitored and controlled in order to scan the accelerating phase and observe net acceleration and deceleration. Phase jitter measurements indicate control of the phase to ∼13° allowing for stable net acceleration of electrons with lasers.

Abstract: We report the production of optically spaced attosecond electron microbunches produced by the inverse free-electron-laser (IFEL) process. The IFEL is driven by a Ti:sapphire laser synchronized with the electron beam. The IFEL is followed by a magnetic chicane that converts the energy modulation into the longitudinal microbunch structure. The microbunch train is characterized by observing coherent optical transition radiation (COTR) at multiple harmonics of the bunching. Experimental results are compared with 1D analytic theory showing good agreement. Estimates of the bunching factors are given and correspond to a microbunch length of 410 attosec FWHM. The formation of stable attosecond electron pulse trains marks an important step towards direct laser acceleration.

3. High-power multimode X-band rf pulse compression system for future linear colliders

Abstract: We present a multimode X-band rf pulse compression system suitable for a TeV-scale electron-positron linear collider such as the Next Linear Collider (NLC). The NLC main linac operating frequency is 11.424 GHz. A single NLC rf unit is required to produce 400 ns pulses with 475 MW of peak power. Each rf unit should power approximately 5 m of accelerator structures. The rf unit design consists of two 75 MW klystrons and a dual-moded resonant-delay-line pulse compression system that produces a flat output pulse. The pulse compression system components are all overmoded, and most components are designed to operate with two modes. This approach allows high-power-handling capability while maintaining a compact, inexpensive system. We detail the design of this system and present experimental cold test results. We describe the design and performance of various components. The high-power testing of the system is verified using four 50 MW solenoid-focused klystrons run off a common 400 kV solid-state modulator. The system has produced 400 ns rf pulses of greater than 500 MW. We present the layout of our system, which includes a dual-moded transmission waveguide system and a dual-moded resonant line (SLED-II) pulse compression system. We also present data on the processing and operation of this system, which has set high-power records in coherent and phase controlled pulsed rf.

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector, we have studied the decays of the ${D}^{0}$ to ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, ${K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}$, ${K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, ${K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$. We present significantly improved results for $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}})=(0.454\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.028\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.035)%$, $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{0}{\overline{K}}^{0})=(0.054\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010)%$, and $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0})=(0.074\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.015)%$, where the first errors are statistical and the second errors are the estimate of our systematic uncertainty. We also present a new upper limit $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}_{S}^{0}{K}_{S}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})l0.059%$ at the 90% confidence level and the first measurement of $B({D}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})=(0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04)%$.

Abstract: We search for the decays ${B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$ in a sample of $2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays using the CLEO detector. We see no evidence for a signal in any channel and set upper limits on the branching fractions of $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l2.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$, $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}})l2.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$, and $B({B}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e})l1.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The CLEO II detector is used to search for the production of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ states in two-photon interactions. We use the signature ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}${\mathit{l}}^{+}$${\mathit{l}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ with l=e,\ensuremath{\mu}. Using 1.49 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of data taken with beam energies near 5.29 GeV, the two-photon width of the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$ is determined to be \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{\mathit{c}2}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma})=1.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.30(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.26(syst) keV, in agreement with predictions from perturbative QCD.

Abstract: A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. Abstract: The branching fractions for the five-charged-particle decays of the [tau] lepton have been measured in [ital e][sup +][ital e][sup [minus]] annihilations using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. Assuming all charged particles to be pions, the results are [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][ge]0 neutrals [nu][sub [tau]])=(0.097[plus minus]0.005[plus minus]0.011)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.077[plus minus]0.005 [plus minus]0.009)%, [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=(0.019[plus minus]0.004[plus minus]0.004)%, and [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup +]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])[lt]0.011% at the 90% C.L. [ital B](3[pi][sup [minus]]2[pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) is measured for the first time by exclusive [pi][sup 0] reconstruction. The results are compared with the predictions from the partially conserved-axial-current and conserved-vector-current hypotheses assuming isospin invariance.

Abstract: We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(D s * + )-M(D s + )=144.22±0.47±0.37 MeV significantly more precisely than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ) using the radiative decay D* 0 →D 0 γ, obtaining [M(D s * + )-M(D s + )]-[M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 )] =2.09±0.47±0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D* 0 )-M(D 0 ), which used the decay D* 0 →D 0 π 0 . We also measure the mass difference M(D s + )-M(D + )=99.5±0.6±0.3 MeV, using the φπ + decay modes of the D s + and D + mesons.

Abstract: Using data from the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we measure [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]) where [ital h][sup [minus]] refers to either [pi][sup [minus]] or [ital K][sup [minus]]. We use three different methods to measure this branching fraction. The combined result is [ital scrB]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital h][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]])=0.2587[plus minus]0.0012[plus minus]0.0042, in good agreement with standard model predictions.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we have measured the ratio of branching fractions, B([ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +])/([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +])=2.35[plus minus]0.16[plus minus]0.16. Our recent measurement of [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +]) then gives [ital scrB]([ital D][sup +][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +][pi][sup +])=(9.3[plus minus]0.6[plus minus]0.8)%.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II data sample, with an integrated luminosity of 1.8 fb[sup [minus]1] at and near the [Upsilon](4[ital S]) resonance, we have observed a signal for [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], which could be due to either [ital D][sup 0][ital [bar D]][sup 0] mixing or doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay, or a combination of the two. We find [ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup +][pi][sup [minus]])/[ital scrB]([ital D][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup [minus]][pi][sup +])=0.0077[plus minus]0 .0025(stat) [plus minus]0.0025(syst).

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector and a sample of 955 000 [Upsilon](4S) decays we have confirmed charmless semileptonic decays of [ital B] mesons. In the momentum interval 2.3--2.6 GeV/[ital c] we observe an excess of 107[plus minus]15[plus minus]11 leptons, which we attribute to [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu]. This result yields a model-dependent range of values for [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] that is lower than has been obtained in previous studies. For the inclusive spectator model of Altarelli [ital et] [ital al]. we find [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.076[plus minus]0.008. Models that describe [ital b][r arrow][ital ul][nu] with a limited set of exclusive final states give [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]]/[ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]=0.06[minus]0.10.

Abstract: We report results from a search for the decays ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, and ${\mathit{B}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$. We find 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$2.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$, and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathit{K}}$0.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}5}$. While there is no statistically significant signal in the individual modes, the sum of ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ and ${\mathit{B}}_{\mathit{K}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}$ exceeds zero with a significance of more than 4 standard deviations, indicating that we have observed charmless hadronic B decays.

Abstract: We observe the [Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +] baryon decaying to [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][pi][sup 0] and measure the mass difference [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) to be 168.5[plus minus]0.2 MeV/[ital c][sup 2]. We also measure the mass differences [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0])[minus][ital M]([Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +]) with improved precision and determine the isospin mass splittings [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup ++])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) and [ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup +])[minus][ital M]([Sigma][sub [ital c]][sup 0]) to be 1.1[plus minus]0.4[plus minus]0.1 MeV/[ital c][sup 2] and 1.4[plus minus]0.5[plus minus]0.3 MeV/[ital c][sup 2], respectively. Our results indicate that the light quark mass difference does not dominate the isospin mass splitting in [Sigma][sub [ital c]].

Abstract: We have measured branching ratios for three [Lambda][sub [ital c]] decay modes that have a [Sigma][sup +] in the final state. Two of the observed decay modes, [Lambda][sub [ital c]][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][pi][sup 0] and [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][omega], have no external [ital W]-emission amplitudes. Their branching ratios relative to the [ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] mode are 0.20[plus minus]0.03[plus minus]0.03 and 0.54[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.06, respectively. We have also significantly improved the measurement of the branching ratio for the previously observed decay mode [Lambda][sub [ital c]][sup +][r arrow][Sigma][sup +][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]]. We find its branching ratio relative to [ital pK][sup [minus]][pi][sup +] to be 0.74[plus minus]0.07[plus minus]0.09.

Abstract: Using 1.79 ${\mathrm{fb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ of data recorded by the CLEO II detector we have measured the absolute branching fraction for ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$. The angular correlation between the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ emitted in the decay ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, and the jet direction in ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}cc\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} events, is used to determine the total number of inclusive ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ mesons produced from this source. The subsequent reconstruction of the decay chain ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$,${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ allows a measurement of the absolute ${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ branching fraction. Correcting for decay radiation in the final state, we find scrB(${\mathit{D}}^{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$)=[3.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.17(syst)]%.

Abstract: We report the measurement of new modes of the charmed baryon ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ using data recorded by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find branching ratios, relative to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{pK}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$, of 0.070\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathit{K}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$, 0.069\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\Sigma}\ensuremath{\varphi}, 0.078\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.013 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{0}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$, and 0.053\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.016\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010 for ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{\mathrm{*}0}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$. These measurements indicate that W-exchange diagrams contribute to ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$ decay. We have also made a new measurement of the previously found mode ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}_{\mathit{c}}^{+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Xi}}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{K}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$.

Abstract: Using data from CLEO II at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we provide a new measurement of the branching fraction for [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]], and we present the first measurements of [ital D][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup 0][pi][sup 0] and of [ital D][sup +][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup 0], which is due to an isospin changing [Delta][ital I]=3/2 transition. From these data we extract the ratio of isospin amplitudes [vert bar][ital A][sub 2]/[ital A][sub 0][vert bar], and the cosine of the relative phase [delta]=[delta][sub 2][minus][delta][sub 0] between these amplitudes, for [ital D][r arrow][pi][pi] decays. Unlike the situation in kaon decay where [ital A][sub 2] is strongly suppressed, we find [vert bar][ital A][sub 2]/[ital A][sub 0][vert bar]=0.72[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.11 and cos[delta]=0.14[plus minus]0.13[plus minus]0.09.

Abstract: We have measured the [ital B][sup 0][ital [bar B]0] mixing probability, [chi][sub [ital d]], using a sample of 965 000 [ital B[bar B]] pairs from [Upsilon](4[ital S]) decays. Counting dilepton events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.157[plus minus]0.016[plus minus]0.018[sub [minus]0.021][sup +0.028]. Using tagged [ital B][sup 0] events, we find [chi][sub [ital d]]=0.149[plus minus]0.023[plus minus]0.019[plus minus]0.010. The first (second) error is statistical (systematic). The third error reflects a [plus minus]15% uncertainty in the assumption, made in both cases, that charged and neutral [ital B] pairs contribute equally to dilepton events. We also obtain a limit on the [ital CP] impurity in the [ital B][sub [ital d]][sup 0] system, [vert bar]Re([epsilon][sub [ital B]][sup 0])[vert bar][lt]0.045 at 90% C.L.

Abstract: We have observed the decays [ital B][sup 0][r arrow][ital K][sup *](892)[sup 0][gamma] and [ital B][sup [minus]][r arrow][ital K][sup *](892)[sup [minus]][gamma], which are evidence for the quark-level process [ital b][r arrow][ital s][gamma]. The average branching fraction is (4.5[plus minus]1.5[plus minus]0.9)[times]10[sup [minus]5]. This value is consistent with standard model predictions from electromagnetic penguin diagrams.

Abstract: A limit on the tau neutrino mass [ital M][sub [nu][tau]] is obtained from a study of tau decays in the reaction [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]][r arrow][tau][sup +][tau][sup [minus]] at center-of-mass energies [similar to]10.6 GeV. The result is based on an end-point analysis of the invariant mass spectrum of the decay products in the decay modes [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow]3[ital h][sup [minus]]2[ital h][sup +][nu][sub [tau]] and [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow]2[ital h][sup [minus]][ital h+]2[pi][sup 0][nu][sub [tau]]. The data sample used in this analysis contains 1.77[times]10[sup 6] tau pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.92 fb[sup [minus]1], and is substantially larger than previous data samples used to place a limit on [ital M][sub [nu][tau]]. The limit obtained for both five-hadron modes together is 32.6 MeV at 95% C.L.

Abstract: With the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured branching fractions for tau lepton decay into one-prong final states with multiple [pi][sup 0]'s [ital B][sub [ital h][ital n][pi]][sup 0], normalized to the branching fraction for tau decay into one charged particle and a single [pi][sup 0]. We find [ital B][sub [ital h]2[pi]][sup 0]/[ital B][sub [ital h][pi]][sup 0]=0.345[plus minus]0.006[plus minus]0.016, [ital B][sub [ital h]3[pi]][sup 0]/[ital B][sub [ital h][pi]][sup 0]=0.041 [plus minus]0.003[plus minus]0.005, and [ital B][sub [ital h]4[pi]][sup 0]/[ital B][sub [ital h][pi]][sup 0]=0.006[plus minus]0.002[plus minus]0.002.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the lepton decay asymmetry ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathrm{fb}}$ in the reaction B\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}}$${\mathit{l}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$\ensuremath{\nu}${\mathrm{\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}}_{\mathit{l}}$ using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). The value of ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathrm{fb}}$ confirms that the chirality of the weak interaction is predominantly left-handed in b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}c transitions as expected in the standard model, if it is assumed that the lepton current is also left-handed. Using ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathrm{fb}}$ and the previously determined branching ratio, ${\mathit{q}}^{2}$ distribution, and ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}}$ polarization, we obtain the first measurement of the form-factor ratios that are used to describe this semileptonic decay.

Abstract: A search for the lepton mumber violating decay of the [tau] lepton to the [gamma][mu] final state has been performed with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]] storage ring CESR. In a data sample that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.55 fb[sup [minus]1], we observe no candidates in the signal region. We thus determine an upper limit of [ital B]([tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][gamma][mu][sup [minus]])[lt]4.2[times]10[sup [minus]6] at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: The tau lepton electron branching fraction has been measured with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring as [ital B][sub [ital e]]=0.1749[plus minus]0.0014[plus minus]0.0022, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. The measurement involves counting electron-positron annihilation events in which both taus decay to electrons, and normalizing to the number of tau-pair decays expected from the measured luminosity. Detected photons in these events constitute a definitive observation of tau decay radiation.

Abstract: The decay [tau][sup [minus]][r arrow][nu][sub [tau]][pi][sup [minus]][pi][sup 0][eta] has been observed for the first time using the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The measured branching ratio (0.17[plus minus]0.02[plus minus]0.02)%, agrees with the CVC (conserved vector current) prediction based on [ital e][sup +][ital e[minus]][r arrow][pi][sup +][pi][sup [minus]][eta] data. Upper limits on the branching ratios for other [tau] decays to final states including [eta] mesons are improved by an order of magnitude compared to previous measurements.

Abstract: Using the decay modes, ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$ and ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${\mathit{D}}^{0}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{0}$, we have measured the ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{+}$ and ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}0\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ mass differences to be 140\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 and 142.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 MeV, respectively. Combining these measurements with the Particle Data Group average for the ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ mass difference, we obtain isospin mass splittings for ${\mathit{D}}^{\mathrm{*}+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$Dusp*0 and ${\mathit{D}}^{+\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$${\mathit{D}}^{0}$ of 3.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 and 4.80\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 MeV. We discuss the implications of these measurements for models of isospin mass differences and model-dependent estimates of ${\mathit{f}}_{\mathit{D}}$.

Abstract: Sudden deafness with or without vertigo presents a difficult diagnostic problem. This article describes 12 patients with enhancement of the cochlea and/or vestibule on gadolinium–diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid–enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), correlating the enhancement with the auditory and vestibular function. All patients were studied with T2-weighted axial images taken through the whole brain, enhanced 3-mm axial T1-weighted images taken through the temporal bone, and enhanced T1-weighted sagittal images taken through the whole brain. Cochlear enhancement on the side of hearing loss was found in all the patients. The vestibular enhancement correlated with both subjective vestibular symptoms and objective measures of vestibular function on electronystagmography. In 2 patients, the resolution of symptoms 4 to 6 months later correlated with resolution of the enhancement on MRI. No labyrinthine enhancement was seen in a series of 30 control patients studied with the same MRI protocol. Labyrinthine enhancement in patients with auditory and vestibular symptoms is a new finding and is indicative of labyrinthine disease. While abnormalities on electronystagmograms and audiograms are nonspecific and only indicate a sensorineural problem, enhanced MRI may separate patients with retrocochlear lesions, such as acoustic neuromas, from those in whom the abnormal process is in the labyrinth or the brain.

Abstract: We have observed the previously unseen \ensuremath{\eta}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{+}$ and \ensuremath{\eta}'${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{+}$ decay model of the ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}^{+}$, and measured branching ratios relative to the \ensuremath{\varphi}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\pi}}}^{+}$ mode of 2.86\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.${38}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.38}^{+0.36}$ and 3.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.${62}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.46}^{+0.44}$, respectively. In addition, the relative branching ratio for the decay into \ensuremath{\varphi}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}^{+}$ is measured as 1.86\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.${26}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.40}^{+0.29}$. Combining these new measurements with previous results and those in the preceding Letter, we account for \ensuremath{\approxeq}(79\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}26)% of ${\mathit{D}}_{\mathit{s}}$ decays.

Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the inclusive {ital B}{sup *} cross section above the {Upsilon}(4{ital S}) resonance in the energy range from 10.61 to 10.70 GeV. We also report a new measurement of the energy of the {ital B}{sup *}{r arrow}{ital B}{gamma} transition photon of 46.2{plus minus}0.3{plus minus}0.8 MeV.

Abstract: Using the CsI calorimeter of the CLEO II detector, the spin triplet {chi}{sub {ital b}}(2{ital P}) states are observed in {Upsilon}(3{ital S}) radiative decays with much higher statistics than seen in previous experiments. The observed mass splittings are not described well by theoretical models, while the relative branching ratios agree with predictions that include relativistic corrections to the radiative transition rates.

Abstract: We report results on inclusive production of the charmed baryon ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ from ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations at $\sqrt{s}=10.5$ GeV. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into $p{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ is measured to be 10.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5 pb summed over all ${x}_{p}$. The branching fractions of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ into $p{\overline{K}}^{0}$, $p{\overline{K}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, $\ensuremath{\Lambda}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$, and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{K}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ relative to that into $p{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ are measured to be 0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05, 0.43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04, 0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03, 0.65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12, and 0.15\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.03, respectively. The ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ mass is measured to be 2284.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7 MeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$. The measured momentum distributions for continuum production of ${{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}}^{+}$ are compared to analytical fragmentation functions and to other measurements.

Abstract: In this article we demonstrate the net acceleration of relativistic electrons using a direct, in-vacuum interaction with a laser. In the experiment, an electron beam from a conventional accelerator is first energy modulated at optical frequencies in an inverse-free-electron-laser and bunched in a chicane. This is followed by a second stage optical accelerator to obtain net acceleration. The optical phase between accelerator stages is monitored and controlled in order to scan the accelerating phase and observe net acceleration and deceleration. Phase jitter measurements indicate control of the phase to {approx}13{sup o} allowing for stable net acceleration of electrons with lasers.

Abstract: We report the production of optically spaced attosecond electron microbunches produced by the inverse free-electron-laser (IFEL) process. The IFEL is driven by a Ti:sapphire laser synchronized with the electron beam. The IFEL is followed by a magnetic chicane that converts the energy modulation into the longitudinal microbunch structure. The microbunch train is characterized by observing coherent optical transition radiation (COTR) at multiple harmonics of the bunching. Experimental results are compared with 1D analytic theory showing good agreement. Estimates of the bunching factors are given and correspond to a microbunch length of 410 attosec FWHM. The formation of stable attosecond electron pulse trains marks an important step towards direct laser acceleration.

Abstract: We report a measurement of {Lambda} polarization in the two-body decay {Lambda}{sub {ital c}}{sup +}{r arrow}{Lambda}{pi}{sup +}, in nonresonant {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} interactions from data taken with the CLEO detector. Using these data we have determined the parity-violating asymmetry decay parameter {alpha}{sub {Lambda}{ital c}} to be {minus}1.0{sub {minus}0.0}{sup +0.4}. We see no evidence for significant {Lambda}{sub {ital c}}{sup +} polarization.

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector we have observed the Cabibbo-suppressed decays {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup 0}{ital {bar K}0}, {ital K}{sup +}{ital K}{sup {minus}}, and {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}. We determine {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup 0}{ital {bar K}0})= (0.13{sup +0.07}{sub {minus}0.05}{sup +0.02}{sub {minus}0.02})%. Our measurement {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{ital K}{sup +}{ital K}{sup {minus}})/{ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}})=2.35{plus minus}0.37{plus minus}0.28 represents asubstantial improvement over previous results. We find no evidence for the decay {ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}, and place a 90%-confidence-level upper limit of {ital B}({ital D}{sup 0}{r arrow}{pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}){lt}0.46%.

Abstract: We report on the observation of ψ mesons from Υ(4S) decays which are too energetic to come from B mesons. These events provide the first evidence for non-BB¯ decays of the Υ(4S). The measured rate is B[Υ(4s)→ψX]=(0.22±0.06±0.04)% for ψ momentum above 2 GeV/c.

Abstract: We report the first evidence of charmless semileptonic decays of {ital B} mesons. In the momentum interval 2.4--2.6 GeV/{ital c} where the background from {ital b}{r arrow}{ital cl}{nu} is negligible, the average of the measured {ital b}{r arrow}{ital ue}{nu} and {ital b}{r arrow}{ital u}{mu}{nu} partial branching ratios is {Delta}{ital B}{sub {ital ub}}(2.4,2.6) =(1.8{plus minus}0.4{plus minus}0.3){times}10{sup {minus}4}. Inclusion of data from the interval 2.2--2.4 GeV/{ital c}, where the lepton yield is dominated by {ital b}{r arrow}{ital cl}{nu}, gives {Delta}{ital B}{sub {ital ub}}(2.2,2.6) =(3.3{plus minus}0.8{plus minus}0.8){times}10{sup {minus}4}. {vert bar}{ital V}{sub {ital ub}}/V{sub cb}{vert bar} depends on the theoretical model of {ital b}{r arrow}{ital ul}{nu} decay and is approximately 0.1.

Abstract: We present a multimode $X$-band rf pulse compression system suitable for a TeV-scale electron-positron linear collider such as the Next Linear Collider (NLC). The NLC main linac operating frequency is 11.424 GHz. A single NLC rf unit is required to produce 400 ns pulses with 475 MW of peak power. Each rf unit should power approximately 5 m of accelerator structures. The rf unit design consists of two 75 MW klystrons and a dual-moded resonant-delay-line pulse compression system that produces a flat output pulse. The pulse compression system components are all overmoded, and most components are designed to operate with two modes. This approach allows high-power-handling capability while maintaining a compact, inexpensive system. We detail the design of this system and present experimental cold test results. We describe the design and performance of various components. The high-power testing of the system is verified using four 50 MW solenoid-focused klystrons run off a common 400 kV solid-state modulator. The system has produced 400 ns rf pulses of greater than 500 MW. We present the layout of our system, which includes a dual-moded transmission waveguide system and a dual-moded resonant line (SLED-II) pulse compression system. We also present data on the processing and operation of this system, which has set high-power records in coherent and phase controlled pulsed rf.

Abstract: We have produced 400 ns rf pulses of greater than 500 MW at 11.424 GHz with an rf system designed to demonstrate technology capable of powering a TeV scale electron-positron linear collider (NLC). Power is produced by four 50 MW X-band klystrons run off a common 400 kV solid-state modulator. We present the layout of our system, which includes a dual-moded transmission waveguide system and a dual-moded resonant-line (SLED-II) pulse compression system. Dual-moding of the transmission lines allows power to be directed through a pulse compression path or a bypass path; dual-moding in the pulse compressor allows the delay lines to be about half as long as they otherwise would need to be. We describe the design and performance of various components, including hybrids, directional couplers, power dividers, tapers, mode converters, and loads. These components are mostly overmoded to allow for greater power handling. We also present data on the processing and operation of this system, which is setting high-power records in pulsed rf.

47. Beam Based Alignment at the KEK-ATF Damping Ring

Abstract: The damping rings of a future linear collider will have demanding alignment and stability requirements in order to achieve the low vertical emittance necessary for high luminosity. The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK has successfully demonstrated the vertical emittance below 5 pm that is specified for the GLC/NLC Main Damping Rings. One contribution to this accomplishment has been the use of Beam Based Alignment (BBA) techniques. The mode of operation of the ATF presents particular challenges for BBA, and we describe here how we have deduced the offsets of the BPMs with respect to the quadrupoles. We also discuss a technique that allows for direct measurements of the beam-to-quad offsets.

Abstract: Designs for a future TeV scale electron-positron Xband linear collider (NLC/GLC) require main linac units which produce and deliver 450 MW of rf power at 11.424 GHz to eight 60 cm accelerator structures. The design of this rf unit includes a SLED-II pulse compression system with a gain of approximately three at a compression ratio of four, followed by an over-moded transmission and distribution system. We have designed, constructed, and operated such a system as part of the 8-Pack project at SLAC. Four 50 MW X-band klystrons, running off a common 400 kV solid-state modulator, drive a dualmoded SLED-II pulse compression system. The compressed power is delivered to structures in the NLCTA beamline. Four 60 cm accelerator structures are currently installed and powered, with four additional structures and associated high power components available for installation late in 2004. We describe the layout of our system and the various high-power components which comprise it. We also present preliminary data on the processing and initial high-power operation of this system.

49. Analysis of KEK-ATF Optics and Coupling Using LOCO

Abstract: LOCO is a computer code for analysis of the linear optics in a storage ring based on the closed orbit response to steering magnets. The analysis provides information on focusing errors, BPM gain and rotation errors, and local coupling. Here, we discuss the details of the LOCO implementation at the KEK-ATF Damping Ring, and report the initial results. Some of the information obtained, for example on the BPM gain and coupling errors, has not previously been determined. We discuss the possibility of using the data provided by the LOCO analysis to reduce the vertical emittance of the ATF beam.

Abstract: The KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) damping ring is a prototype low emittance source for the NLC/JLC linear collider. To achieve the goal normalized vertical emittance {gamma}{var_epsilon}{sub y} = 20 nm-rad, magnet placement accuracy better than 30 mm must be achieved. Accurate beam-based alignment (BBA) is required. The ATF arc optics uses a FOBO cell with two horizontally focusing quadrupoles, two sextupoles and a horizontally defocusing gradient dipole, all of which must be aligned with BBA. BBA at ATF uses the quadrupole and sextupole trim windings to find the trajectory through the center of each magnet. The results can be interpreted to assess the accuracy of the mechanical alignment and the beam position monitor offsets.
