ABSTRACT Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important for the world's food production. Recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) has a reduced water requirement and better possibilities for waste handling. Unfortunately, off‐flavours can be formed in RAS and concentrate on fish flesh. Off‐flavour compounds cause earthy, musty or other unwanted flavours to fish flesh that consumers find objectionable. Typically, off‐flavours are removed by depurating the fish in clean water, but it often takes from days to weeks to fully remove these unwanted flavours that causes additional costs to fish producers. Therefore, reliable methods to reduce the need for depuration are needed. In this study, two methods were investigated for the removal of off‐flavours in RAS rearing rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss: an advanced oxidation process (AOP) using a combination of ozone (O3) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and a treatment with H2O2 alone. Two treatments (AOP and H2O2) and a control without oxidants were applied across nine identical experimental RASs for 8 h day−1 over 10 days, and selected off‐flavour compounds in water and fish were analysed. In fish, the concentrations of GSM and MIB were on average 776 and 962 ng kg−1 (AOP) and 688 and 919 ng kg−1 (H2O2) compared to 1071 and 1205 ng kg−1 in the controls. The results showed that intensive oxidant treatments reduced the off‐flavour concentrations in the recirculating water and in fish, which can potentially lead to reduced depuration time and production costs. Further optimization of the treatment is needed to improve off‐flavour removal efficiencies.

Abstract Beneficial and adverse associations with arrhythmias have been reported for omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3 FA) and Vitamin D. The 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG) contains quantitative measures reflecting diverse aspects of electrophysiology that might provide insights into mechanisms underlying these associations. In a pre-specified ancillary study of the VITaminD and omegA-3 (VITAL) trial, we examined the effect of 1 g of marine omega-3 FA per day, comprised of 460 mg eicosapentanoic acid and 380 mg of docosahexaenoic acid, and 2000 IU VitaminD3 per day on ECG characteristics associated with atrial and ventricular arrhythmias among individuals age 50 years or greater. A total of 911 study participants underwent ECGs at baseline and again at 2 years after the randomization. Individuals randomized to active omega-3 FA demonstrated significant net increase in PR-interval duration (p = 0.005) and P-wave duration (p = 0.03) as well significant net decrease in P-wave amplitude (p = 0.037) as compared to placebo. RMSSD increased to a greater extent in the omega-3 FA arm compared to placebo (p = 0.040). For Vitamin D3, the Cornell voltage increased to a lesser extent in the participants assigned to active treatment as compared to placebo (p = 0.044). There were no other significant differences in QRS, QTc, Cornell voltage or heart rate. Thus, randomized treatment with omega-3 FA supplements resulted in changes on the ECG that are potentially reflective of heightened vagal tone and/or slowing of intraatrial and AV conduction. Vitamin D3 supplementation resulted in modest reductions in progressive LV voltage suggestive of a potential antihypertrophic effect. We present a comprehensive checklist of scleractinian (hard) corals for the Mersing Islands, Malaysia based on surveys conducted at 24 reefs across protected and unprotected marine areas. A total of 261 species of corals from 16 families and one incertae sedis (Pachyseris spp.) were recorded, along with ten records that are new for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Compared against the IUCN Red List, 46.7% of coral species found in the Mersing Islands were of Least Concern (LC), 29.5% as Near Threatened (NT) and 16.4% Vulnerable (V). Only one recorded species, Pectinia maxima (Moll & Best, 1984), was listed as Endangered (EN). Baseline species diversity data are essential for the monitoring and management of marine biodiversity, especially within marine protected areas. With both protected and unprotected coral reef areas in the vicinity of the widely scattered Mersing Islands, the diversity and distribution of coral species can be used as the basis for area-based conservation and management strategies. The diversity and abundance of scleractinian corals of each island or area should be surveyed periodically to ensure the appropriate level of protection is afforded to retain scleractinian biodiversity in this region.

Abstract The riverine flux of terrigenous dissolved organic matter (tDOM) to the ocean is a significant contributor to the global carbon cycle. In response to anthropogenic drivers the flux is expected to increase. This may impact the availability of sunlight in coastal ecosystems, and the seawater carbonate system and coastal CO2 fluxes. Despite its significance, there are few long‐term and high‐resolution time series of tDOM parameters. Corals incorporate fluorescent tDOM molecules from the chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) pool in their skeletons. The resulting coral skeletal luminescence variability has traditionally been used to reconstruct hydroclimate variation. Here, we use two replicate coral cores and concurrent in‐situ biogeochemical data from the Sunda Shelf Sea in Southeast Asia, where peatlands supply high tDOM inputs, to show that variability in coral luminescence green‐to‐blue ratios (coral G/B) can be used to quantitatively reconstruct terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (tDOC) concentration. Moreover, coral G/B can be used to reconstruct the CDOM absorption spectrum from 230 to 550 nm, and the specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254) of the DOM pool. Comparison to a core from Borneo shows that there may be site‐specific offsets in the G/B–CDOM absorption relationship, but that the slope of the relationship is very similar, validating the robustness of the proxy. By demonstrating that corals can be used to estimate past changes in coastal tDOC and CDOM, we establish a method to study drivers of land–ocean tDOM fluxes and their ecological consequences in tropical coastal seas over decadal to centennial time scales.

BackgroundCardiac death is one of the leading causes of death and sudden cardiac death (SCD) is estimated to cause approximately 50% of cardiac deaths. Men have a higher cardiac mortality than women. Consequently, the mechanisms and risk markers of cardiac mortality are not as well defined in women as they are in men.AimThe aim of the study was to assess the prognostic value and possible gender differences of SCD risk markers of standard 12-lead electrocardiogram in three large general population samples.MethodsThe standard 12-lead electrocardiographic (ECG) markers were analyzed from three different Finnish general population samples including total of 20,310 subjects (49.9% women, mean age 44.8 ± 8.7 years). The primary endpoint was cardiac death, and SCD and all-cause mortality were secondary endpoints. The interaction effect between women and men was assessed for each ECG variable.ResultsDuring the follow-up (7.7 ± 1.2 years), a total of 883 deaths occurred (24.5% women, p < 0.001). There were 296 cardiac deaths (13.9% women, p < 0.001) and 149 SCDs (14.8% women, p < 0.001). Among those who had died due to cardiac cause, women had more often a normal electrocardiogram compared to men (39.0 vs. 27.5%, p = 0.132). After adjustments with common cardiovascular risk factors and the population sample, the following ECG variables predicted the primary endpoint in men: left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) with strain pattern (p < 0.001), QRS duration > 110 ms (p < 0.001), inferior or lateral T-wave inversion (p < 0.001) and inferolateral early repolarization (p = 0.033). In women none of the variables remained significant predictors of cardiac death in multivariable analysis, but LVH, QTc ≥ 490 ms and T-wave inversions predicted SCD (p < 0.047 and 0.033, respectively). In the interaction analysis, LVH (HR: 2.4; 95% CI: 1.2–4.9; p = 0.014) was stronger predictor of primary endpoint in women than in men.ConclusionSeveral standard ECG variables provide independent information on the risk of cardiac mortality in men but not in women. LVH and T-wave inversions predict SCD also in women.

Background: Abnormal 12‑lead electrocardiogram (ECG) findings and proposing its ability for enhanced risk prediction, majority of the studies have been carried out with elderly populations with prior cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to denote the association of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and various abnormal ECG morphologies using middle-aged population without a known cardiac disease. Methods: In total, 9511 middle-aged subjects (mean age 42 ± 8.2 years, 52% males) without a known cardiac disease were included in this study. Risk for SCD was assessed after 10 and 30-years of follow-up. Results: Abnormal ECG was present in 16.3% (N = 1548) of subjects. The incidence of SCD was distinctly higher among those with any ECG abnormality in 10 and 30-year follow-ups (1.7/1000 years vs. 0.6/1000 years, P 100°, left ventricular hypertrophy, and T-wave inversions were the most significant independent ECG risk markers for 10-year SCD prediction with up to 3-fold risk for SCD. Those with ECG abnormalities had a 1.3-fold risk (95% CI 1.07–1.57, P = 0.007) for SCD in 30-year follow-up, whereas QRST-angle > 100°, LVH, ER ≥ 0.1 mV and ≥0.2 mV were the strongest individual predictors. This article deals with differences in users’ perception towards COVID-19 vaccination and towards individual COVID-19 vaccine brands. Since COVID-19 is much more dangerous to the elderly population, this article deals with differences between those under the age of 60 and those over the age of 60. The results show that there are some differences between those two groups. For the group of people under the age of 60, the duration of protection is more important (39%), while the brand of vaccine is less important (25%). In contrast, the vaccine brand is of much greater importance (34%) and the duration of protection less important (25%) for the group of people over the age of 60. The study also showed differences in relation to individual brands of COVID-19 vaccines, with both groups preferring Pfizer to other brands, which is not surprising, since there was the least amount of negative media coverage about Pfizer, especially compared to AstraZeneca. The vaccine brand is surprisingly more important to those over the age of 60 than to those under the age of 60, while the effectiveness of the vaccine is equally important for both groups and both groups are equally sensitive to duration and side effects of the vaccine.

Abstract Enhancing the performance of noisy quantum processors requires improving our understanding of error mechanisms and the ways to overcome them. A judicious selection of qubit design parameters plays a pivotal role in improving the performance of quantum processors. In this study, we identify optimal ranges for qubit design parameters, grounded in comprehensive noise modeling. To this end, we also analyze the effect of a charge-parity switch caused by quasiparticles on a two-qubit gate. Due to the utilization of the second excited state of a transmon, where the charge dispersion is significantly larger, a charge-parity switch will affect the conditional phase of the two-qubit gate. We derive an analytical expression for the infidelity of a diabatic controlled-Z gate and see effects of similar magnitude in adiabatic controlled-phase gates in the tunable coupler architecture. Moreover, we show that the effect of a charge-parity switch can be the dominant quasiparticle-related error source of a two-qubit gate. We also demonstrate that charge-parity switches induce a residual longitudinal interaction between qubits in a tunable-coupler circuit. Furthermore, we introduce a performance metric for quantum circuit execution, encompassing the fidelity and number of single- and two-qubit gates in an algorithm, as well as the state preparation fidelity. This comprehensive metric, coupled with a detailed noise model, enables us to determine an optimal range for the qubit design parameters, as confirmed by numerical simulation. Our systematic analysis offers insights and serves as a guiding framework for the development of the next generation of transmon-based quantum processors.

Abstract This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current evidence regarding neck sensorimotor testing in individuals with neck pain, assess the differences between neck pain groups and healthy controls, and recognize factors that might affect test results. We performed the data search using PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Scopus databases. We used a two-step screening process to identify studies. Furthermore, we screened the reference lists for additional studies. Hedges g was used to present the difference between neck pain groups and asymptomatic individuals. We assessed the quality of the studies using the QUADAS tool. The final review included 34 studies, of which 25 were related to the joint position error test, four to the smooth pursuit neck torsion test and six to the balance test. Our meta-analysis showed poorer joint-position sense, oculomotor function, and wider postural sway in individuals with neck pain than healthy controls. The size of the difference between the groups seemed to be influenced by the intensity of the pain and the presence of dizziness. Therefore, it might be helpful in future studies to differentiate patients with neck pain into subgroups based on their symptom and demographic profiles to assess other factors that significantly affect cervical sensorimotor control.

The Kanta Patient Data Repository (PDR) contains healthcare data from the population of Finland for more than a decade. The repository is a continuously expanding real world dataset produced by many information systems and healthcare service providers. Kanta data has been available for secondary uses such as scientific research since 2019. The data can be requested from the Finnish authority Findata. However, before a request has been accepted, it is difficult to assess if the accumulated data allows answering a specific research question. Publicly available descriptions of data structures in the Kanta PDR do not tell how much they are used in practice. This publication enables future data use cases by providing a view on the overall availability of types of structured health data in the Kanta PDR based on a sample of 96 200 medical histories of over 18-year-old patients. We conclude that the Kanta PDR is a promising source of real world data for development and evaluation of medical risk calculators within the Finnish population. The wide coverage of the Finnish population and timeliness of the data are its strengths as a source of research data also outside of Finnish context. However, the limitations on data availability in variable level need to be considered on a case-by-case basis. Main challenges in the use of data in the Kanta PDR are multiple code systems for laboratory results, short durations of recorded data for specific data types, and missing or very rarely used structured format e.g., in cases of tobacco and alcohol use.

Background The congenital heart disease (CHD) population is growing and aging. We aim to examine the impact by describing the temporal trend and causes of lifetime hospitalization burden among the CHD population. Methods and Results From the Danish National Patient Registry, 23 141 patients with CHD and their hospitalizations from 1977 to 2018 were identified, excluding patients with extracardiac malformation. Patients with CHD were categorized into major CHD and minor CHD, and each patient was matched with 10 controls by sex and year of birth. The rate of all‐cause hospitalization increased over time from 28.3 to 36.4 hospitalizations per 100 person‐years (PY) with rate difference (RD) per decade of 2.5 (95% CI, 2.0–3.1) hospitalizations per 100 PY for the patients with CHD, compared with the increase from 10.8 to 17.0 per 100 PY (RD per decade, 2.0 [95% CI, 1.8–2.2] per 100 PY) for the control group (RD for CHD versus control, P=0.08). The all‐cause hospitalization rate remained constant for the major CHDs (RD per decade, −0.2 [95% CI, −1.2 to 0.9] per 100 PY) but increased for the minor CHDs (RD per decade, 5.2 [95% CI, 4.3–6.0] per 100 PY). For all patients with CHD, the cardiovascular hospitalization rate remained constant over time (RD per decade, 0.2 [95% CI, −0.3 to 0.6] per 100 PY) whereas the noncardiovascular hospitalization rate increased (RD per decade, 2.1 [95% CI, 1.6–2.7] per 100 PY). The length of all‐cause hospital stays for all patients with CHD decreased from 2.7 (95% CI, 2.6–2.8) days per PY in 1977 to 1987 to 1.6 (95% CI, 1.6–1.7) days per PY in 2008 to 2018. Conclusions Compared with previous decades, patients with CHD have an increasing hospitalization rate, similar to the general population, but a decreasing length of hospital stay. The increase in hospitalization rate was driven by noncardiovascular hospitalizations, with the patients with minor CHD being the key contributor to the increasing rate.
