V tem pismu poročamo o prvi sistematični študiji tipa populacije supertermičnih elektronov v sončevem vetru, imenovane ojačitve pri 90° PA (ang. pitch angle). Ta populacija je bila najdena v bližini medplanetarnih udarnih valov, pri čemer smo analizirali dvourne časovne intervale centrirane na udarnih valovih. Ojačitve pri 90° PA smo našli pri 114 od 232 (49 %) dogodkov, kar pomeni, da je ta tip populacije dokaj pogost v sončevem vetru. Statistična analiza lastnosti medplanetarnih udarnih valov je pokazala, da ni bistvenih razlik v lastnostih med udarnimi valovi ob katerih so bile ojačitve prosotne in tistimi kjer jih ni bilo. Preliminarna analiza fluktuacij električnega polja pa je pokazala, da je njihova aktivnost intenzivnejša v bližini udarnih valov, ob katerih smo našli ojačitve pri 90° PA.

The Martian magnetotail exhibits a highly twisted configuration, shifting in response to changes in polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field's (IMF) dawn-dusk (BY) component. Here, we analyze ∼6000 MAVEN orbits to quantify the degree of magnetotail twisting (θTwist) and assess variations as a function of (a) strong planetary crustal field location, (b) Mars season, and (c) downtail distance. The results demonstrate that θTwist is larger for a duskward (+BY) IMF orientation a majority of the time. This preference is likely due to the local orientation of crustal magnetic fields across the surface of Mars, where a +BY IMF orientation presents ideal conditions for magnetic reconnection to occur. Additionally, we observe an increase in θTwist with downtail distance, similar to Earth's magnetotail. These findings suggest that coupling between the IMF and moderate-to-weak crustal field regions may play a major role in determining the magnetospheric structure at Mars.

The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) – Hope Probe – was developed to understand Mars atmospheric circulation, dynamics, and processes through characterization of the Mars atmosphere layers and its interconnections enabled by a unique high-altitude (19,970 km periapse and 42,650 km apoapse) low inclination orbit that will offer an unprecedented local and seasonal time coverage over most of the planet. EMM has three scientific objectives to (A) characterize the state of the Martian lower atmosphere on global scales and its geographic, diurnal and seasonal variability, (B) correlate rates of thermal and photochemical atmospheric escape with conditions in the collisional Martian atmosphere, and (C) characterize the spatial structure and variability of key constituents in the Martian exosphere. The EMM data products include a variety of spectral and imaging data from three scientific instruments measuring Mars at visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths and contemporaneously and globally sampled on both diurnal and seasonal timescale. Here, we describe our strategies for addressing each objective with these data in addition to the complementary science data, tools, and physical models that will facilitate our understanding. The results will also fill a unique role by providing diagnostics of the physical processes driving atmospheric structure and dynamics, the connections between the lower and upper atmospheres, and the influences of these on atmospheric escape.

Venus lacks significant intrinsic magnetic fields and thus its atmosphere and ionosphere interact directly with the solar wind flow and magnetic fields. Interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) can penetrate into the ionosphere when the upstream solar wind dynamic is stronger than the ionospheric plasma pressure. Magnetic topology can be inferred at Venus if it is defined as the magnetic connectivity to the collisional atmosphere/ionosphere, rather than connectivity to the planet’s surface. Utilizing electron and magnetic field measurements from the Venus Express mission, this study provides the first characterization of magnetic topology at Venus by examining the pitch angle and energy distribution of superthermal (> ~1 eV) electrons. More specifically, the presence of loss cones in electron pitch angle distributions infers the connectivity to the nightside collisional atmosphere and the presence of ionospheric photoelectrons (identified from electron energy distributions) indicates the connectivity to the dayside collisional ionosphere. We show case examples of various magnetic topology types at Venus, including the most expected draped IMF, open field lines connected to the nightside atmosphere, open field lines connected to the dayside ionosphere, and, most surprisingly, cross-terminator closed field lines. More interestingly, during one of the ionospheric hole events identified by Collinson et al. [2014, JGRA], we discover not only the expected open magnetic topology but also a field-aligned potential drop, which has implications for its formation mechanism. The characterization of magnetic connectivity could provide new insights into many important topics on Venus, such as planetary ion outflow, energetic electron precipitation (possible auroral emission), and the formation mechanism of Venusian ionospheric holes.

International audience; We study the influence of the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux intensity on the precipitating ion fluxes as seen by the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer, an energy and angular ion spectrometer aboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. We defined three periods with significantly different EUV flux intensity (1.6 and 3.2 times the lowest EUV intensity) and compare the precipitating ion flux measured by MAVEN/Solar Wind Ion Analyzer during each period. At low energy [30–650] eV, we find that the median (average) precipitating ion flux during the medium and low EUV periods are, respectively, 1.7 (2.1) and 3 (3.5) times more intense than the flux during the high EUV period. At high energy [650–25,000] eV, a similar trend in the intensity of the precipitating ion flux is observed but with an increase by 50% (46%) and 70% (79%), respectively. A larger EUV flux does therefore not seem to favor heavy ion precipitation into Mars's atmosphere, contrary to modeling prediction and overall expectations.

International audience; Open and draped magnetic field topologies are important at Mars because they can provide ionospheric particles a path to escape to space. Four years of Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN data are analyzed in this study, demonstrating that the altitude at which the ionospheric density drops below 102 cm-3 is essentially coincident with the altitude down to which open and draped magnetic field lines are observed in the ionosphere. During times of enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure, a greater fraction of the magnetic topology was observed as open or draped (as opposed to closed) above densities of 102 cm-3. The altitudes at which the ionospheric density fell below 102 cm-3, and the magnetic field topology transitioned from closed to open or draped, also decreased during higher dynamic pressure conditions. Times of enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure thus appear to drive greater penetration of draped magnetic field into the ionosphere, enhancing the rate of reconnection between draped and crustal magnetic fields and producing more open field. Such observations may have implications for the long-term evolution of the Martian ionosphere; the historic solar wind is thought to have been denser and faster than present-day conditions, and "quiet time" conditions may have been equivalent to extreme dynamic pressure events today. Depending on past atmospheric conditions at Mars, draped topology may have routinely penetrated deep into the ionosphere, and quiet time rates of ionospheric escape to space may thus have been much greater for early Mars than today.

International audience; In this work, we study the influence of the September 2017 solar event on the precipitating heavy ion fluxes towards Mars' atmosphere as seen by MAVEN/SWIA, an energy and angular ion spectrometer and by MAVEN/STATIC, an energy, mass and angular ion spectrometer. After a careful reconstruction of the background induced by the Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event in the MAVEN/SWIA spectrometer, we investigate the precipitating ion flux responses to the space weather events that took place in September 2017. This period is a unique opportunity to analyze the respective role of various possible drivers of heavy ion precipitation into Mars’ atmosphere with a wide range of different space weather events occurring during the same month. This study shows an increase in the precipitation flux by more than one order of magnitude during the arrival of the September Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection (ICME) compared to the average flux during quiet solar conditions. We also showed that among the possible solar drivers, the solar wind dynamic pressure is the most significant during September 2017.

A complex boundary layer with a variety of charged particle and electromagnetic field signatures, including a transition between plasma predominantly of solar wind origin and plasma of planetary origin, lies between the Martian bow shock and the ionosphere. In this paper, we develop and utilize algorithms to autonomously identify and characterize this ion composition boundary (ICB), using data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission. We find an asymmetric ICB with a larger average thickness, lower altitude, and lower velocity shear in the hemisphere where the solar wind motional electric field points outward, as a result of the asymmetry of the mass loading process. The ICB thickness scales with the magnetosheath proton gyroradius at the top of the boundary layer but does not clearly vary with external drivers. The ICB location varies with solar wind ram pressure and crustal magnetic field strength, but does not clearly respond to solar wind Mach number or extreme ultraviolet irradiance. The ICB represents a distinct boundary for ion density and flow speed, but the magnetic field strength and direction typically do not vary significantly across the ICB. The plasma density and flow speed at the ICB vary seasonally, likely in response to variations in the neutral exosphere and/or atmosphere. However, the ICB on average remains at or below the altitude where pressure balance is achieved between the piled up magnetic field (MPB) and the solar wind ram pressure, regardless of season or crustal magnetic field strength.

Multi-spacecraft missions after 2000 (Cluster II, THEMIS, Van Allen Probes, and MMS) have revolutionized our understanding of the causes, patterns and variability of a wide array of plasma phenomena in the terrestrial magnetospheric environment. ESCAPADE is a twin-spacecraft Mars mission concept that will similarly revolutionize our understanding of how solar wind momentum and energy flows throughout Mars’ magnetosphere to drive ion and sputtering escape, two processes which have helped shape Mars’ climate evolution over solar system history. ESCAPADE will measure magnetic field strength and topology, ion plasma distributions (separated into light and heavy masses), as well as suprathermal electron flows and thermal electron and ion densities, from coordinated elliptical, 200 km x ~7000 km orbits. ESCAPADE are small spacecraft ( ESCAPADE is due to complete its preliminary design review in August 2020, thereafter moving toward build, test, integration and launch two years later. We will report on science goals and objectives, mission design challenges, and provide a status update.

At Mars, recent studies based on a combination of MAVEN data and modeling have determined the Martian magnetotail exhibits a ~45° twist, either clockwise or counterclockwise from the ecliptic plane, away from the nominal interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) draping morphology. An initial study by DiBraccio et al. [2018] employed MAVEN magnetic field measurements, coupled with MHD simulations, to indicate that the twist is likely a result of the sun-planetary interaction. Now with several more years of MAVEN data available, we augment this work using a statistical analysis of MAVEN magnetic field data from November 2014 through November 2019. We utilized ~6000 orbits, requiring that MAVEN observed both the magnetotail and the upstream IMF over a given orbit. For periods when the upstream IMF measurements were not available due to MAVEN’s orbit precession, we utilize an IMF proxy to determine characteristics of the upstream orientation. The location of the magnetotail lobes, identified in the data as the regions of magnetic field behind the planet directed towards and away from Mars, are analyzed as a function of the upstream IMF dawn-dusk component. In the previous DiBraccio et al. [2018] study, this dawn-dusk component was found to be the separating factor in the direction of magnetotail twisting. To quantify the degree of tail twisting for a given scenario, we determine the vector between the center of the towards/away tail lobes and calculate the angle between this vector and the expected direction for nominal IMF draping. This calculated tail twist angle is then assessed as a function of a variety of factors including strong crustal field location, Mars season, and downtail distance. In all cases, we determine that the degree of tail twisting is larger when the IMF is oriented in the duskward direction, suggesting enhanced coupling between the IMF and planetary crustal fields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the degree of tail twisting exhibits different trends for crustal field orientation under dawnward versus duskward IMF configurations. Seasonal variations indicate that tail twisting may vary over the course of the Martian year, but additional data are needed during the northern fall and winter periods for confirmation. Finally, when assessing the tail twist with downtail distance we find that the degree of twisting increases with distance from the planet. This result is similar to Earth where observations of the magnetotail twist increases away from the planet as the torque exerted by the IMF on the planetary field increases. From these findings we confirm that the tail twist at Mars is likely a result of the direct interaction between the IMF and the planetary crustal fields; however, we find evidence suggesting that the degree of twisting is larger for duskward IMF orientations. This implies that magnetic reconnection on the dayside of Mars, between the IMF and crustal fields, may be favorable under specific IMF configurations.

On Earth, electric discharges in thunderstorms produce ELF waves in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide that circles the globe. These waves give rise to Schumann resonances in the waveguide resonant cavity. These waves are also expected to occur at Venus, produced by strong lightning in the Venus atmosphere and at Mars produced by active dust devils or dust storms, during southern hemisphere summer, when the planet is near periapsis. Within dust storms, dust particles undergo triboelectric charging. The charge transfer leads to charge separation. A lightning discharge is expected to occur when the charge exceeds the breakdown strength of the media present. The transient electric discharge emits electromagnetic waves in the VLF/ELF range of frequency, leading to Schumann Resonance in the surface-ionospheric cavity. In a heterogeneous cavity, Schumann resonance modes are observable using an in-situ instrument. Recently has it been possible to search for these electromagnetic waves from the Mars surface using the UCLA-provided InSight fluxgate magnetometer. The weakness of the vertical component of ULF waves at Mars suggests that the subsurface is electrically conducting, allowing trapping of electromagnetic energy between the sub-surface and the ionosphere. The fundamental mode of Schumann resonance carries higher energy compared to there are more chances of observing the fundamental mode. Various values of the first mode are predicted in the literature for Mars like 13-14 Hz or between 9-14 Hz and 17.5 Hz. Even if the fundamental mode is above 10 Hz, the 20 Hz sampling rate will allow detection of an aliased signal. We examine the data obtained during Martian sandstorms for the possible existence of such waves. A large dust storm was detected on Mars beginning on InSight sols 40 to 50, and ending during sols 50 to 90. Examining the 20 Hz InSight magnetometer data during this period reveals no clearly identifiable Schumann Resonance signals within the bandwidth of the magnetometer.

ICMEs (interplanetary coronal mass ejections), the heliospheric counterparts of what is observed with coronagraphs at the Sun as CMEs, have been the subject of intense interest since their close association with geomagnetic storms was established in the 1980s. These major interplanetary plasma and magnetic field transients, often preceded and accompanied by solar energetic particles (SEPs), interact with planetary magnetospheres, ionospheres, and upper atmospheres in now fairly well-understood ways, although their details and context affect their overall impacts. The term ICME as it is used here refers to the complete solar-wind plasma and field disturbance, including the leading shock (if present), the compressed, deflected solar-wind plasma and the field behind the shock (“sheath”), and the coronal ejecta (the “driver”) – often called a magnetic cloud. Many uncertainties remain in understanding both the relationship to what is observed at the Sun and the variety of local outcomes suggested by in-situ observations. This impacts our abilities to interpret events and to forecast effects based on solar observations. Here, we briefly consider what is known about ICMEs and their evolution en route from the Sun from the combination of available observations and interpretive models that have been developed up to now. The included references are only representative of the large body of work that has been published on this subject. Our aim is to provide the reader with an updated synthesis of research results in this still active area of heliophysics at the dawn of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and Solar Orbiter (SO) mission era.

The National Academy Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science (CAPS) made a recommendation to study a large/medium-class dedicated space telescope for planetary science, going beyond the Discovery-class dedicated planetary space telescope endorsed in Visions and Voyages. Such a telescope would observe targets across the entire solar system, engaging a broad spectrum of the science community. It would ensure that the high-resolution, high-sensitivity observations of the solar system in visible and UV wavelengths revolutionized by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) could be extended. A dedicated telescope for solar system science would: (a) transform our understanding of time-dependent phenomena in our solar system that cannot be studied currently under programs to observe and visit new targets and (b) enable a comprehensive survey and spectral characterization of minor bodies across the solar system, which requires a large time allocation not supported by existing facilities. The time-domain phenomena to be explored are critically reliant on high spatial resolution UV-visible observations. This paper presents science themes and key questions that require a long-lasting space telescope dedicated to planetary science that can capture high-quality, consistent data at the required cadences that are free from effects of the terrestrial atmosphere and differences across observing facilities. Such a telescope would have excellent synergy with astrophysical facilities by placing planetary discoveries made by astrophysics assets in temporal context, as well as triggering detailed follow-up observations using larger telescopes. The telescope would support future missions to the Ice Giants, Ocean Worlds, and minor bodies across the solar system by placing the results of such targeted missions in the context of longer records of temporal activities and larger sample populations., Comment: A whitepaper submitted to the Planetary Science Decadal Survey

International audience; We discuss the influence of the solar wind dynamic pressure on the ion precipitation using observations performed by MAVEN from the 04 June 2014 to the 20 July 2017. The increase of the dynamic pressure from 0.63 to 1.44nPa is clearly associated with an increase of the same order of magnitude of the precipitating oxygen ion energy flux measured by MAVEN/STATIC from 9.9 to 20.6 × 106eV. cm−2. sr−1. s−1at low energy (from 30 to 650 eV). In the same way, from 650 eV to 25000 eV, MAVEN/SWIA (all species) observed an increase from 22.4 to 42.8 × 107eV. cm−2. sr−1. s−1 of the precipitating ion energy flux.Performing two simulations using the average solar wind conditions for both solar dynamic pressure regimes observed by MAVEN as input of the LatHyS model (LATMOS Hybrid Simulation), we reproduce some of the key characteristics of the observed oxygen ion precipitation. We characterize the oxygen ions simulated by LatHyS by their energy and time of impact, their time of injection in the simulation and initial position and the mechanism by which these ions were created. The model suggests that the main cause of the increase of the heavy ion precipitation during an increase of the solar dynamic pressure is the increase of the ion production by charge exchange, proportional to the increase of the solar wind flux, which becomes the main contribution to the ion precipitation at high energy.
