A surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an excitation resulting from the coupling of light to a surface charge oscillation at a metal-dielectric interface. The excitation and detection of SPPs is foundational to the operating mechanism of a number of important technologies, most of which require SPP excitation via direct reflectance, commonly achieved via Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) using the Kretschmann configuration. As a result, the accessible modes are fundamentally high-loss "leaky modes," presenting a critical performance barrier. Recently, our group provided the first demonstration of "forbidden," or guided-wave plasmon polariton modes (GW-PPMs), collective modes of a MIM structure with oscillatory electric field amplitude in the central insulator layer with up to an order of magnitude larger propagation lengths than those of traditional SPPs. However, in that work, GW-PPMs were accessed by indirect reflectance using Otto configuration ATR, making them of limited applied relevance. In this paper, we demonstrate a technique for direct reflectance excitation and detection of GW-PPMs. Specifically, we replace the air gap used in traditional Otto ATR with a low refractive index polymer coupling layer, mirroring a technique previously demonstrated to access Long-Range Surface Plasmon Polariton modes. We fit experimental ATR data using a robust theoretical model to confirm the character of the modes, as well as to explore the potential of this approach to enable advantageous propagation lengths. The ability to excite GW-PPMs using a device configuration that does not require an air gap could potentially enable transformative performance enhancements in a number of critical technologies.

The chemistry of electron deficient π-acceptors offers unique challenges in the rational design and synthesis of organic dyes for use in solar cells. We have synthesized 2-cyano-2-(3-cyano-4-((E)-4-(dibutylamino)styryl)-5,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)ethanoic acid (2), a dye containing an carboxylated version of the strongly electron withdrawing TCFgroup by way of stepwise synthesis and isolation of 2,5-dihydro-2-imino-4,5,5-trimethylfuran-3-carbonitrile (5), previously only available as an intermediate available viamicrowave chemistry. We use this dye to sensitize nanocrystalline TiO2in order to examine its efficacy in dye-sensitized solar cells. Crystal structures of an intermediate and the final dye are presented and the isomerization about the terminal alkene is discussed in addition to preliminary solar cell data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biocompatible materials capable of controlled actuation are in high demand for use in biomedical applications such as dynamic tissue scaffolding, valves, and steerable surgical tools. Conducting polymer actuators are of interest because they operate in aqueous electrolytes at low voltages and can generate stresses similar to natural muscle. Recently, our group has demonstrated a composite material of silk and poly(pyrrole) (PPy) that is mechanically robust, made from biocompatible materials, and bends under an applied voltage when incorporated into a simple bilayer device architecture and actuated using a biologically relevant electrolyte. Here we present trilayer devices composed of two silk-PPy composite layers separated by an insulating silk layer. The trilayer architecture allows one side to expand while the other contracts, resulting in improved performance over bilayer devices. Specifically, this configuration shows a larger angle of deflection per volt applied than the analogous bilayer system, while maintaining a consistent current response throughout cycling. In addition, the overall motion of the trilayer devices is more symmetric than that of the bilayer analogs, allowing for fully reversible operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
