The measuring of internal stress has not only a great scientific aspect, but is particularly important for nondestructive description of component or products in industry. It is expected that exceeding of local mechanical limits in the material can have catastrophic consequences. In this paper is mapped the deformation field of amorphous material under the nanoindenter tip using diffraction in Debye-Scherrer geometry. Using the FEM analysis, it was modeled the deformation field in such material. There is a great match in between measured and calculated data. The result is pointing out on large limits of internal stresses measuring by conventional standard methods.

In the given contribution, the production of shape-memory glass-coated microwires based on Ni2FeZ (Z = Ga, Sn, Sb) and Co2Cr(GaSi) alloys is shown, focusing to their repeatable production. Such wires are characterized by monocrystalline structure along entire length. This leads to 1.5% reversible temperature shape memory effect for Ni2FeGa microwire in the as-cast state without necessity of additional thermal treatment. Moreover, well defined anisotropy results in the variation of permeability up to 550% during the phase transition. An efficient way to study the relationship between chemical composition and mechanical properties of thin films is to utilize the combinatorial approach, where spatially resolved mechanical property measurements are conducted along a concentration gradient. However, for thin film glasses many properties including the mechanical response are affected by chemical topology. Here a novel method is introduced which enables spatially resolved short range order analysis along concentration gradients of combinatorially synthesized metallic glass thin films. For this purpose a CoZrTaB metallic glass film of 3 μm thickness is deposited on a polyimide foil, which is investigated by high energy X-ray diffraction in transmission mode. Through the correlative chemistry-topology-stiffness investigation, we observe that an increase in metalloid concentration from 26.4 to 32.7 at% and the associated formation of localized (hybridized) metal – metalloid bonds induce a 10% increase in stiffness. Concomitantly, along the same composition gradient, a metalloid-concentration-induced increase in first order metal - metal bond distances of 1% is observed, which infers itinerant (metallic) bond weakening. Hence, the metalloid concentration induced increase in hybridized bonding dominates the corresponding weakening of metallic bonds.

Nano-palladium catalysts, prepared using the same procedure with the same metal content (3 wt%) and two different supports, activated carbon (Pd/C) and activated carbon—multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Pd/C/CNT), are discussed. The simple technique of deposition reduction was applied in the preparation of these two types of Pd catalysts. TEM, XRD analysis, EXAFS signal analysis, and XANES were used for sample characterization. In both samples, transmission electron microscopy identified nanosized Pd particles with nearly spherical morphology but different sizes. The mean diameters of the particles on Pd/C and Pd/C/CNT were estimated to be 5.4 nm and 7.8 nm, respectively. The EXAFS signal analysis showed that Pd atoms on the particle surfaces were coordinated by 4 oxygens to form a PdO monolayer covering a metallic core. The XANES signal analysis indicated a smaller particle size for Pd/C (∅ 5 nm) than for Pd/C/CNT (∅ 10 nm), in good agreement with the TEM observations.

Physical review / B 93(21), 214424(2016). doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.93.214424, Despite the intensive studies for decades, it is still not well understood how qualitatively different magnetic behaviors can occur in a narrow composition range for the Fe-rich Fe-transition metal (TM) amorphous alloys. In this study of amorphous Fe$_{100−x}$Zr$_x$ (x=7, 9, 12) metallic glasses, normal ferromagnetism (FM) is found at 12 % Zr where only the FM-paramagnetic (PM) transition is observed at the Curie temperature, T$_C$. In contrast, spin-glass (SG)-PM transition at a temperature, T$_g$, called SG temperature, is only observed at 7 % Zr, while in the transient re-entrant composition range (x=8−11), an SG-FM transition at a temperature, T$_f$, called spin-freezing temperature, is also observed at low temperature besides the normal FM-PM transition at T$_C$. In order to understand this unusual behavior, a detailed characterization of pressure (atomic volume), composition, and temperature dependence of the magnetic properties is coupled with high pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction determination of the pressure dependence of the atomic volume. The results on Fe$_{100−x}$Zr$_x$(x=7, 9, 12) are compared to those obtained for the FM Co$_{91}$Zr$_9$ metallic glass not showing any kind of anomalous magnetic properties. It is confirmed that the unusual behavior is caused by a granularlike magnetic structure where weakly coupled magnetic clusters are embedded into a FM bulk matrix. Since the mechanism of the magnetization reversal was found to be of the curling type rather than homogeneous rotation, the energy barrier determining the blocking temperature of the clusters is calculated as AR, where A is the exchange constant and R is the cluster size, in contrast to the usual characterization of the energy barrier by KV where K is the anisotropy energy and V is the cluster volume. The volume fraction of the FM part is a fast changing function of the bulk composition: Almost 100% FM fraction is found at 12 % of Zr while no trace of real FM is observed at 7 at % Zr. The driving force of this surprising magnetic character is the atomic volume: The lower the Zr content, the higher is the fraction of Fe atoms with compressed atomic volume having low magnetic moment. The percolation of their network separates the clusters from the FM bulk. The complex magnetic behavior of the Fe-rich Fe-Zr amorphous system at low temperatures can thus be interpreted with the only assumption of a cluster-size distribution and a weak coupling of the clusters to the FM matrix. The introduction of this coupling is able to explain the opposite pressure dependence of T$_g$ and T$_f$. The threshold atomic volume in the low magnetic moment regions is found to be comparable to the atomic volume characteristic to the low-spin limit of the face-centered-cubic Fe alloys. The extensive literature results on the anomalous magnetism for various Fe-rich Fe-TM amorphous alloys and especially for the Fe-rich Fe-Zr glassy system are also found to be in agreement with this granular magnetic behavior., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Thermal evolution of the structure of glass-coated nanocrystalline FeCoMoB microwire during its devitrification has been studied. It is shown that annealing at the temperature above 411 °C leads to the formation of crystalline α-FeCo grains with diameter ∼12 nm. Annealing at higher temperature increases the crystalline weight fraction up to 40% at 565 °C. However, crystalline grains size increases very weakly to ∼13 nm. The thermal expansion coefficient of nanocrystalline microwire decreases by one half comparing to that of the amorphous precursor.

A pioneer in-situ synchrotron X-ray nanodiffraction approach for characterization and visualization of strain fields induced by nanoindentation in amorphous materials is introduced. In-situ nanoindentation experiments were performed in transmission mode using a monochromatic and highly focused sub-micron X-ray beam on 40 μm thick Zr-based bulk metallic glass under two loading conditions. Spatially resolved X-ray diffraction scans in the deformed volume of Zr-based bulk metallic glass covering an area of 40 × 40 μm2 beneath the pyramidal indenter revealed two-dimensional map of elastic strains.
