Recently, a new kind of collinear magnetism, dubbed altermagnetism, has attracted considerable interests. A key characteristic of altermagnet is the momentum-dependent band and spin splitting without net magnetization. However, finding altermagnetic materials with large splitting near the Fermi level, which necessarily requires three-dimensional k-space mapping and is crucial for spintronic applications and emergent phenomena, remains challenging. Here by employing synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), spin-resolved ARPES and model calculations, we uncover a large altermagnetic splitting, up to ~1.0 eV, near the Fermi level in CrSb. We verify its bulk-type g-wave altermagnetism through systematic three-dimensional k-space mapping, which unambiguously reveals the altermagnetic symmetry and associated nodal planes. The ARPES results are well captured by density functional theory calculations. Spin-resolved ARPES measurements further verify the spin polarizations of the split bands near Fermi level. In addition, tight-binding model analysis indicates that the large altermagnetic splitting arises from strong third-nearest-neighbor hopping mediated by Sb ions, which breaks both the space-time reversal symmetry and the translational spin-rotation symmetry. The large band/spin splitting near Fermi level in metallic CrSb, together with its high TN (up to 705 K) and simple spin configuration, paves the way for exploring emergent phenomena and spintronic applications based on altermagnets., Comment: The manuscript contains 19 pages, 5 figures and 1 table. Metallic ferromagnetic transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as important building blocks for scalable magnonics and memory applications. Downscaling such systems to the ultra-thin limit is critical to integrate them into technology. Here, we achieved layer-by-layer control over the transition metal dichalcogenide Cr$_{1.6}$Te$_{2}$ by using pulsed laser deposition, and we uncovered the minimum critical thickness above which room temperature magnetic order is maintained. The electronic and magnetic structure is explored experimentally and theoretically and it is shown that the films exhibit strong in-plane magnetic anisotropy as a consequence of large spin-orbit effects. Our study elucidates both magnetic and electronic properties of Cr$_{1.6}$Te$_{2}$, and corroborates the importance of intercalation to tune the magnetic properties of nanoscale materials architectures., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

The relation between crystal symmetries, electron correlations, and electronic structure steers the formation of a large array of unconventional phases of matter, including magneto-electric loop currents and chiral magnetism. Detection of such hidden orders is a major goal in condensed matter physics. However, to date, nonstandard forms of magnetism with chiral electronic ordering have been experimentally elusive. Here, we develop a theory for symmetry-broken chiral ground states and propose a methodology based on circularly polarized spin-selective angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to probe them. We exploit the archetypal quantum material Sr2RuO4 and reveal spectroscopic signatures which, even though subtle, may be reconciled with the formation of spin-orbital chiral currents at the material surface. As we shed light on these chiral regimes, our findings pave the way for a deeper understanding of ordering phenomena and unconventional magnetism.

Magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling in the artificial multiferroic heterostructures facilitate valuable features for device applications such as magnetic field sensors and electric write magnetic-read memory devices. In a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructures, the strain mediated coupling exploits piezoelectricity/electrostriction in ferroelectric phase and magnetostriction/piezomagnetism in ferromagnetic phase. Such verity of these combined effect can be manipulated by an external perturbation, such as electric field, temperature or magnetic field. Here, we demonstrate the remote-controlled tunability of these effects under the visible, coherent and polarized light. The combined surface and bulk magnetic study of domain-correlated Ni/BaTiO3 heterostructure reveals that the system is strong sensitive about the light illumination via the combined effect of converse piezoelectric, magnetoelastic coupling and converse magnetostriction. Well-defined ferroelastic domain structure is fully transferred from a tetragonal ferroelectric to magnetostrictive layer via interface strain transfer during the film growth. The visible light illumination is used to manipulate the original ferromagnetic microstructure by the light-induced domain wall motion in ferroelectric, consequently the domain wall motion in the ferromagnetic layer. Our findings mimic the attractive remote-controlled ferroelectric random-access memory write and magnetic random-access memory read application scenarios, hence, can be proven as a novel perspective for room temperature device applications., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures

The room temperature (300 K) electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited LaNi_{x}V_{1-x}O_{3} thin films have been demonstrated. The substitution of early-transition metal (TM) V in LaVO_{3} thin films with late-TM Ni leads to the decreasing in out-of-plane lattice parameter. Doping of Ni does not alter the formal valence state of Ni and V in LaNi_{x}V_{1-x}O_{3} thin films, divulging the absence of carrier doping into the system. The valence band spectrum is observed to comprise of incoherent structure owing to the localized V 3d band along with the coherent structure at Fermi level. With increase in Ni concentration, the weight of the coherent feature increases, which divulges its origin to the Ni 3d-O 2p hybridized band. The shift of Ni 3d-O 2p hybridized band towards higher energy in Ni doped LaVO_{3} films compared to the LaNiO_{3} film endorses the modification in ligand to metal charge transfer (CT) energy. The Ni doping in Mott-Hubbard insulator LaVO_{3} leads to the closure of Mott-Hubbard gap by building of spectral weight that provides the delocalized electrons for conduction. A transition from bandwidth control Mott-Hubbard insulator LaVO_{3} to negative CT metallicity character in LaNiO_{3} film is observed. The study reveals that unlike in Mott-Hubbard insulators where the strong Coulomb interaction between the 3d electrons decides the electronic structure of the system, CT energy can deliver an additional degree of freedom to optimize material properties in Ni doped LaVO_{3} films., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures

Electronic structure of pulsed laser deposited epitaxial LaVO3 (LVO) thin film grown on LaAlO3 (001) (LAO) substrate, has been studied at room temperature and at 130 K, which is below the structural (141 K) and magnetic transition temperatures (143 K) of single crystal LVO. Significant modification in spectral intensity, largely around the V 3d - O 2p hybridized region, is observed in valence band spectrum (VBS) of LVO film at 130 K. Resonant photoemission study at 130 K confirms the presence of charge transfer screened 3dnL (L: hole in the O 2p) final state along with the dominant 3dn-1 final state at 1.5 eV binding energy in the valence band. On the contrary, in the room temperature VBS dominant V 3d sates with only 3dn-1 kind final state is accentuated. To understand this difference, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed. The changes in crystal structure from room temperature orthorhombic (O-LVO) to low temperature monoclinic (M-LVO) symmetry leads to remarkable change in the electronic structure around the Fermi level, including transition from direct to indirect nature of band gap. Our calculations also confirm an enhanced O 2p character in the valence band edge of M-LVO that is hybridized with V 3d. SrCoO2.5 (SCO) is a charge transfer insulator with 3d6 ground state configuration leading to antiferromagnetic nature. It is observed that substrate induced strain engineering modifies the ground state of SCO thin film with 3d7L (L:O-2p hole) configuration causing negative charge transfer energy.The consequent strong hybridization between O-2p and Co-3d bands causes a hole in O-2p band leading to hole mediated unconventional ferromagnetic ordering in SrCoO2.5 thin film. We have grown Au/Ag modulated nanostructured thin films by pulsed laser deposition using metallic targets. The growths performed at room temperature involved deposition of alternate layers of the two metals with larger thickness of Au and much lower thickness of Ag (two cases) on crystalline silicon (100) and quartz substrates. However, the characterization revealed that nanostructured configuration is realized in the film. We characterized the films by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with energy dispersive analysis of x-rays (EDAX), magnetization (M-T) and resistivity (Rho-T) measurements. The magnetization and resistivity measurements confirm that there is no signature of superconducting transition within the temperature range of 5K to 300K studied in these films., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
