Peripheral glaciers (PGs, i.e., glaciers that are dynamically decoupled from the ice sheet) play a significant role in the mass balance and freshwater runoff of Greenland's land ice. Their evolution has implications for the sea level, global climate and ocean circulation, as well as for coastal communities and ecosystems. In order to accurately model the contribution of PGs to Greenland's overall mass balance and freshwater supply, it is necessary to consider their characteristics that set them apart from the main ice sheet. In this study, we used the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) to conduct large-scale regional modeling of approximately 19,000 PGs and project future mass losses, freshwater runoff, and sea level contributions under different climate scenarios. Our results show that PGs are likely to experience 29 % to 52 % of mass loss compared to their 2020 levels by the end of the 21st century, resulting in 10 mm to 19 mm of sea level rise under SSP126 and SSP585, respectively. Under the high emission scenario, PGs are expected to contribute 184 Gt yr-1 of liquid freshwater and 3 Gt yr-1 of calved solid ice to the ocean during 2020-2100, affecting ocean density, circulation, and mixing. Peakwater is projected for the 2080s under SSP585, after which annual freshwater contributions are expected to decline due to reduced glacier area. Regional mass and freshwater balance differences were found to be influenced by local climate, ocean-ice interaction, proportion of marine-terminating glaciers, and initial glacier volume. The central-west, southeast, and central-east subregions will experience the largest mass losses (79 %, 69 %, and 63 % of mass in 2020), with peakwater occurring earlier than for all PGs considered together under SSP585. The northeast subregion is expected to contribute 35 % of total liquid freshwater, 73 % of solid ice calving, and 37 % of sea level rise, despite lower mass loss (wrt 2020) due to regional conditions (i.e., climate, glacier geometries, and surrounding ocean). Submarine melting is likely to impact the mass balance of marine-terminating PGs, but further research is needed to explore this effect at a regional scale. This study highlights the importance of considering the distinct behavior of PGs in modeling Greenland's freshwater balance and understanding the factors that influence their mass changes.

Marine-terminating glaciers cover roughly one-third of the Northern Hemisphere's glacierized area (outside the Greenland ice sheet) and their direct freshwater export to the oceans has the potential to change not only global mean sea level (GMSL), but also local and regional ocean circulation patterns. Due to the interrelation of surface and frontal mass budgets, the dynamics of marine-terminating glaciers are distinct from those of land-terminating glaciers forced only by the atmosphere. Here, were present recent advances in large-scale modeling of marine-terminating glaciers in the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM). These include an enhanced representation of frontal processes and an independent calibration of surface and frontal mass balance. Further, we do a first investigation of coupling effects with an ocean general circulation model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean; NEMO). Including an explicit treatment of frontal processes (but so far ignoring future changes in ocean climate), we find that the spread between different emission scenarios at the end of the 21st century is reduced. Cumulative GMSL rise contribution projected for Northern Hemisphere glaciers is reduced by ca. 8 % in 2100, while the reduction for marine-terminating glaciers is ca. 23 %. Utilizing temperature and salinity output of NEMO, configured for the Arctic and Northern Hemisphere Atlantic (NEMO-ANHA4), to force a newly implemented submarine melt parameterization in OGGM, we estimate that 12 (6 - 22) % of the total frontal ablation was caused by submarine melt between 2010 and 2020. Finally, we explore differences in the ocean model’s output between runs that include the freshwater forcing from northern hemisphere glaciers and those that do not. The two main findings considering NEMO runs that include the freshwater forcing derived from OGGM output compared to those that do not are: i) an increased heat transport into Baffin Bay, and ii) changes in the pathways of Atlantic water to the Arctic Ocean, with less transport into the Barents Sea and more through Fram Strait.

Mountain glaciers across the world are contributing around one-third to the recent barystatic global mean sea-level rise, and relevant for regional hydrological changes. Although the majority of Earth’s glaciers is land-terminating, roughly one-third of the glaciated area drains into an ocean or a lake. Due to the interrelation of surface and frontal mass budget, marine-terminating glaciers are subject to different dynamics than land-terminating ones, which are only forced by the atmosphere. This means that mass changes of marine-terminating glaciers cannot only be explained by changes in the atmospheric forcing. Thus, if ice-ocean interaction is not explicitly treated in a mass-balance model, calibration using, e.g., geodetic mass balances will lead to an overestimation of these glaciers’ sensitivity to changes in atmospheric temperatures. However, most large-scale glacier models are not yet able to account for this process and frontal ablation remains an elusive feature of glacier dynamics, because direct observations are sparse. We explore this issue by implementing a simple frontal ablation parameterization in the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM). One of the major changes this entails is the lowering of marine-terminating glaciers’ sensitivities to atmospheric temperatures in the model’s surface mass-balance calibration. We then use this model, forced with an ensemble of atmospheric temperature and precipitation projections from climate models taking part in the Climate Model Intercomparison Project’s sixth phase (CMIP6), to project global glacier mass change until 2100. The main aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the frontal ablation parameterization on those projections. We find that introducing the parameterization of frontal ablation, but ignoring changes in ocean climate, reduces the spread between different emission scenarios in 2100.

Negative glacier mass balances in most of Earth's glacierized regions contribute roughly one quarter to currently observed rates of sea-level rise, and have likely contributed an even larger fraction during the 20th century. The distant past and future of glaciers' mass balances, and hence their contribution to sea-level rise, can only be calculated using numerical models. Since independent of complexity, models always rely on some form of parameterizations and a choice of boundary conditions, a need for optimization arises. In this work, a model for computing monthly mass balances of glaciers on the global scale was forced with nine different data sets of near-surface air temperature and precipitation anomalies, as well as with their mean and median, leading to a total of eleven different forcing data sets. Five global parameters of the model’s mass balance equations were varied systematically, within physically plausible ranges, for each forcing data set. We then identified optimal parameter combinations by cross-validating the model results against in-situ mass balance observations, using three criteria: model bias, temporal correlation, and the ratio between the observed and modeled temporal standard deviation of specific mass balances. The goal is to better constrain the glaciers' 20th century sea-level budget contribution and its uncertainty. We find that the disagreement between the different ensemble members is often larger than the uncertainties obtained via cross-validation, particularly in times and places where few or no validation data are available, such as the first half of the 20th century. We show that the reason for this is that the availability of mass balance observations often coincides with less uncertainty in the forcing data, such that the cross-validation procedure does not capture the true out-of-sample uncertainty of the glacier model. Therefore, ensemble spread is introduced as an additional estimate of reconstruction uncertainty, increasing the total uncertainty compared to the model uncertainty obtained in the cross validation. Our ensemble mean estimate indicates a sea-level contribution by global glaciers (excluding Antarctic periphery) for 1901–2018 of 76.2 ± 5.9 mm sea-level equivalent (SLE), or 0.65 ± 0.05 mm SLE yr−1.

Glacier mass loss is recognized as a significant contributor to current sea-level rise. However, large uncertainties remain in projections of glacier mass loss on global and regional scales. We present an ensemble of 279 global-scale glacier mass and area change projections for the 21st century based on eleven glacier models using up to ten General Circulation Models (GCMs) and four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) as boundary conditions. We partition the total uncertainty into the individual contributions caused by glacier models, GCMs, RCPs, and natural variability. We find that emission scenario uncertainty is growing throughout the 21st century, and is the largest source of uncertainty by 2100. The relative importance of glacier model uncertainty decreases over time, but it is the greatest source of uncertainty until the middle of this century. The projection uncertainty associated with natural variability is small on the global scale but has strong effects on small regional scales. The projected global mass loss by 2100 relative to 2015 (75±64 mm sea-level equivalent (SLE) for RCP2.6, 165±98 mm SLE for RCP8.5) is lower than, but within the uncertainty range of previous projections.
