This article addresses the broader question of the special issue by reflecting on the coloniality of knowledge production in a context of global climate governance. Drawing on the rationale of the special issue, we highlight key dynamics in which knowledge shape climate policies and propose a decolonial approach at the nexus of academic knowledge production and policy formation by accounting for diverse ways of knowing climate justice. To this end, the article asks how to develop a decolonial approach to researching climate justice in order to identify the meaning-in-use of climate justice by affected people in what we describe as sensitive regions of the Arctic and the Mediterranean. To this end, the article develops a research design that accounts for diverse ways of knowing. The article proceeds as follows: first, we will discuss how diverse ways of knowing are related to global climate governance and climate justice; second, we outline our practice-based research framework that addresses research ethics, decolonial approaches and norm contestation; and third, we discuss how our approach can inform not only the co-production of research in climate governance, but also current debates on climate justice.

Background: Resection followed by local radiation therapy (RT) is the standard of care for symptomatic brain metastases. However, the optimal technique, fractionation scheme and dose are still being debated. Lately, low-energy X-ray intraoperative RT (lex-IORT) has been of increasing interest. Method: Eighteen consecutive patients undergoing BM resection followed by immediate lex-IORT with 16–30 Gy applied to the spherical applicator were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic, RT-specific, radiographic and clinical data were reviewed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of IORT for BM. Descriptive statistics and Kaplan–Meyer analysis were applied. Results: The mean follow-up time was 10.8 months (range, 0–39 months). The estimated local control (LC), distant brain control (DBC) and overall survival (OS) at 12 months post IORT were 92.9% (95%-CI 79.3–100%), 71.4% (95%-CI 50.2–92.6%) and 58.0% (95%-CI 34.1–81.9%), respectively. Two patients developed radiation necrosis (11.1%) and wound infection (CTCAE grade III); both had additional adjuvant treatment after IORT. For five patients (27.8%), the time to the start or continuation of systemic treatment was ≤15 days and hence shorter than wound healing and adjuvant RT would have required. Conclusion: In accordance with previous series, this study demonstrates the effectiveness and safety of IORT in the management of brain metastases despite the small cohort and the retrospective characteristic of this analysis.

Some of the main genealogies within postcolonial scholarship are discussed, with a focus on key thinkers, such as Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, Gayatri Spivak, Aníbal Quijano, and Walter Mignolo. Key concepts, such as colonial discourse theory, development, and subaltern studies are presented. The discussion of postcolonial thought is embedded in a reflection on its relation to other theoretical paradigms and social theories (e.g., poststructuralism, world-system theory, Marxism). This focus seeks to highlight some of the main contours of the field, while also pointing out the ways postcolonialism has shaped the discipline of international relations (IR).

Die Forderung nach »kritischer« Normenforschung in den IB durch Engelkamp et al. und Deitelhoff/Zimmermann aufgreifend, pladieren wir dafur, mithilfe eines kritisch-konstruktivistischen Forschungsprogramms uber eine poststrukturalistische Perspektive hinauszugehen, die lediglich hegemoniale Strukturen hinterfragt. Normenforschung muss »kritisch« bleiben – hier stimmen wir mit den vorangegangenen Beitragen in der ZIB uberein. Gelingen kann dies jedoch nur, wenn beforschte Akteurinnen und Akteure vor einer normativen Bewertung der Forschenden zunachst fur sich selbst sprechen konnen und ihren Artikulationen weder theoretisch noch methodologisch vorgegriffen wird. In Anlehnung an kritisch-konstruktivistische Forschung schlagen wir daher eine induktive Forschungsstrategie vor, die genau dies ermoglicht und dabei die doppelte Hermeneutik forschungspraktisch umsetzt. Gelingt dies, wird lokalen Akteurinnen und Akteuren agency zugestanden und sie sprechen fur sich selbst. Dann erst ist (Normen-)Forschung kritisch. Empirisch illustriert der Artikel eine solche Forschungsstrategie anhand einer rekonstruktiven Analyse des meaning-in-use der Normen »Freiheit« und »Gleichberechtigung« anhand der Reaktionen auf die Protestaktionen von FEMEN in der WANA-Region.

Introduction: The tumor growth delay assay is a well-accepted technique in experimental animal tumor models for the measurement of the response to treatments. Tumor growth delay assays were mostly performed with subcutaneous xenograft tumors in the hind leg of small animals. However, some radiation qualities with low energy and/or very small irradiation fields cannot use this method. This study was performed to test a new irradiation setup at the Small Animal Radiation Research Platform (SARRP, Xtrahl Ltd.) which can be especially used to irradiate very small tumors with low energy X-rays. Methods: This study was performed with a human head and neck cancer cell line (FaDu). 100 000 FaDu cells were suspended in Matrigel® and subcutaneously injected at the right ear of immunocompromised NMRI nu/nu mice. Tumors with a size of 2x2 mm2 were irradiated with 3 Gy and 6 Gy operating the SARRP at 70 kVp X-rays. Tumor growth was determined over a follow-up of 20 days with a caliper. The tumor growth delay was compared between homogeneously and non-irradiated mice. 20 days after irradiation tumor cells were transferred in cell culture. Results: In this pilot study using 70 kVp X-rays, six tumor-bearing mice were irradiated with either 3 or 6 Gy. Three tumor-bearing mice served as a control. The tumor volume doubling time of unirradiated tumors was 2.75 ± 0.4 days. Out of three, one mouse showed an obvious tumor growth delay at 3 Gy. However, all tumors irradiated with 6 Gy were controlled. The tumor cells which were transferred into cell culture medium showed normal growth characteristics. Conclusion and Outlook: We successfully implemented a xenograft tumor system in mouse ears and irradiations of 2x2 mm2 tumors at the SARRP. The mouse ear tumor model allows an accurate and simple method to determine the tumor volume. In future, this tumor-bearing mouse ear model will enable irradiations which are limited due to small irradiation fields and/or low X-ray energies. Moreover, it is possible to isolate tumor cells out of the mouse ear for future in-vitro analysis. This new method could be used at the first brilliant and compact synchrotron X-ray source (Munich Compact Light Source) where the dose can be deposited by spatially fractionated X-ray beamlets like microbeam radiation therapy (MRT). This chapter introduces a reflexive research strategy outlining a critical approach that seeks to examine the impact of the uprisings in West Asia and North Africa (WANA)1 on international politics. Although the protests and contentious politics are rather local in character, I argue that they are not merely occurrences of claims making, but processes in which perceptions and imaginations as well as normative assumptions central to dominant notions of international relations are substantially reshaped. Therefore, research on international relations has to engage with these processes and practices as they uncover normative shifts that are crucial for the legitimacy of politics, but are difficult to illuminate through dominant IR theories as they are often infused with a “Westphalian narrative.”

“Islam” in particular as well as “the MENA region” more generally continue to be research objects that are often reflected upon in the light of specific grand narratives. “Orientalism”, “Clash of Civilisations”, and the “Arab Spring” are not only indicative of the ambiguous position of “Islam” in varying discourses but also shows its particular relevance within IR due to its meaning in the global realm. Does the requirement to develop an Islamic or Middle Eastern IR theory logically follow? This paper argues that such an endeavour would rather reinforce meta-theoretical narratives and eventually perpetuate Middle Eastern exceptionalism. Instead, this paper seeks to contribute to critical IR theory which accounts for the ‘situatedness’ of meaning that shapes social practices in a particular context. This, however, poses new challenges on the complex issue of in an increasingly globalised world that harbours more and more constitutionalised structures on a global scale, in which the question of legitimacy has to be substantially addressed. Thus, the paper proceeds in three steps: First, it critically assesses predominant IR theories (tacitly) working with normative assumptions, e.g the Westphalian system, and thus producing positivistic scholarship based upon “Western principles”. Second, it will be shown that a turn to reflexive scholarship and interpretive methods in IR not only allow to better assess the diverse practices that are related to “Islam” in different contexts but also constitute the basis to critically approach the question of legitimacy. Third, the discourses during the Syrian uprising will empirically highlight the theoretical claim.
