This paper discusses the Memoire sur l'interieur de l'Afrique, written by the French scholar Joseph Jerome Lefrancois de Lalande. It analyses Lalande's aims, arguments and claims regarding his subject of study - the "inner parts" of Africa - against the background of scientific, commercial, political and military tensions between France and Britain. It situates Lalande's discourse within the broader context of the competing "science policies" of both states in the second half of the eighteenth century. It is an investigation of the sudden re-emergence of Africa as an object of knowledge in the relationship between power and science. The paper focuses on the continuous interaction between France and Britain in African affairs, and highlights the shift from a mere "Enlightened" exploration from the 1720s to Lalande's revolutionary time, when Africa became the object of a "Banksian" takeover, enhancing British interest in the "unknown" interior of the African continent by setting up large-scale, interrelated research missions with practical goals. This provoked reactions from the French side, reflected in Lalande's dissertation.

Des la fin du xviie siecle et surtout dans le courant du xviiie le corail est au coeur de debats enflammes qui ont comme objet la nature meme de la vie marine. Cette etude a comme objectif d’etudier les acteurs qui animent ces debats, et de suivre une succession de priorites intellectuelles qui renvoient a des changements epistemologiques profonds. C’est une etude d’un monde savant toujours en desaccord sur le fondement de ce qu’on appelle a l’epoque « mineral », « vegetal » ou « animal », et fortement influence par les tensions entre autorite et verite, entre observation et experience. On insistera ici sur la dimension europeenne des debats, reliant les cotes de la Mediterranee et de l’Atlantique, ou on produit des connaissances profondement nouvelles a travers l’observation et l’experience in situ, aux institutions savantes ou les resultats de ces travaux sont analyses, debattus, acceptes ou rejetes.

The Enlightenment naturalist Jean-Andre Peyssonnel had a lifelong connection both to expeditions and corals in three parts of the world: Provence, North Africa and the island of Guadeloupe. The central question of this chapter is how the relationship between travel and experiment functioned in the case of a momentous investigation that ultimately would prove that coral belongs to the animal kingdom. This study relates experiments to three evolving frameworks of exploration: the trip, the expedition and the colonial mandate. It confronts observations at sea with experiments in the laboratory. The case shows that the production of knowledge on the natural history of the sea was a process in which experimentation received growing attention in the course of the eighteenth century, especially when chemistry intervened.

Dit artikel is een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen debatten in België over het klimaat van Congo en de daaraan verbonden vermeende gezondheid of ongezondheid van het gebied, en de politieke agenda’s van de bijdragers aan dit debat voor de periode vanaf het begin van de Leopoldiaanse exploratie van Midden-Afrika in 1876 tot aan de overdracht van de Onafhankelijke Congostaat aan België in 1908. Vanaf het begin van die exploratie was er aandacht voor het klimaat. Zo werden er meteorologische gegevens over de verkende en geannexeerde gebieden verzameld en werd het klimaat vaak afgeschilderd als een onbekend kwaad : het werd als uiterst ongezond beschouwd. Zowel gruwelijke als fortuinlijke verhalen afkomstig van andere imperiale mogendheden over soortgelijke gebieden waren van invloed op het denken over het klimaat. Om Congo te promoten als lucratief en niet ongezond gebied, iets wat de voorstanders van het imperiale project graag deden, was het belangrijk om het kwade beeld over het klimaat te bevechten. De mening over het klimaat, en of de witte man kon acclimatiseren in Congo, werd dus niet enkel beïnvloed door de daadwerkelijke omstandigheden aldaar, maar in grote mate door de vraag of men Congo als een goed exploitatieterrein voor de Belgen zag. In dit artikel wordt behalve het geven van een algemene analyse van de debatten en hoe zij zich verhouden tot internationale ontwikkelingen op het gebied van bijvoorbeeld de koloniale hygiëne, ook ingezoomd op het discours van opponenten in een aantal uitgelichte discussies. Climate, acclimatization and hygiene are three terms that one might not immediately expect together. Yet they are intimately linked in the questions of whether European expansion in the Congo Basin had a chance of survival and to what extent this should be a Belgian affair rather than just an adventure of King Leopold II. Proponents of Belgian involvement in the Congo spoke highly of the area and referred to it with the expression "Les Indes africaines". They saw it as a region where, by analogy with the British and Dutch East Indies, the riches were there for the taking. Opponents spoke of "Le Congo minotaure", a monstrous country with a deadly climate. This notion did not come out of thin air. During the earliest explorations of the Association Internationale Africanine (AIA) in Central Africa and also during the establishment of the first stations in the area there were casualties. Many in Belgium were convinced that the climate was harmful to Congo-based compatriots and other European emigrants.
