Pit building antlions \textit{Euroleon nostras} have been submitted to artificial cues in order to delineate their faculty to localize a prey. Series of propagating pulses in sand have been created from an extended source located at a large distance from the pit. The envelope of each pulse encompasses six oscillations at a carrier frequency of 1,250 Hz and up to eight oscillations at 1,666 Hz (yielding a wavelength of the order of 7 to 10 cm). In one set of experiments, the first wave front is followed by similar wave fronts and the antlions respond to the cue by throwing sand in the opposite direction of the wave front propagation direction. In another set of experiments, the first wave front is randomly spatially structured while the propagation of the wave fronts inside the envelope of the pulse are not. In that case, the antlions respond less to the cue by throwing sand, and when they do, their sand throwing is more randomly distributed in direction. One concludes that the localization of vibration signal by antlions are based on the equivalent for hearing animals of interaural time difference in which the onset has more significance than the interaural phase difference.

Trap‐building antlion larvae detect their prey according to the substrate vibrations produced during movement of the prey on the sand surface. Although most studies are devoted to surface vibrational waves, in the present study, we determine the role of vibrations travelling through deeper sand layers. A behavioural experiment confirms that vibrational stimuli from prey insects on the surface of the sand stimulate the antlions buried in deeper sand layers to move towards the surface. Sand depth and particle size both have a strong effect on signal transmission. The damping coefficient (α₁₀) varies from 0.49 dB to 3.30 dB cm⁻¹ and depends on frequency (in the range from 100 to 300 Hz), particle size (from finest to coarse sand) and distance from the source of the vibrations. The deeper the sand, the narrower the frequency range of the signal becomes. Sand is a filter for higher frequencies. The smaller the sand particles, the more intense the filtering becomes. Fine sand with a mean sand particle size of 360 μm is a more efficient filter than coarse sand; consequently, high frequencies (> 2.5 kHz) are eliminated at a depth of 3 cm. Mean frequency depends on both depth and particle size. However, low frequency signals still propagate at a certain distance, which is biologically important in prey detection. Although the most efficient signal propagation appears to occur in coarse sand, it contains overly large particles that are inconvenient for relatively small antlion larvae. Predators seek a compromise between fine and coarse sand choosing medium sand.

Parasitoids are known to be an important factor in the population density regulation of bark beetles. In our study of the parasitoid complex of spruce bark beetles in 2011 and 2012, we collected bark samples from trees infested with I. typographus from spruce stands in the altimontane belt of Slovenia. The samples were taken at different altitudes: 450, 700 and 1230 m above sea level. A total of 9 bark beetle species and 12 parasitoid species was found. Ips typographus was most abundant, with 93% of all species of scolytids. The parasitoid species that were found belonged mainly to the Pteromalidae and Braconidae families. By far the most abundant and frequent species was Roptrocerus xylophagorum, which represented 84% of all parasitoids and was present in all study samples. Differences in species composition, parasitoid species diversity, species abundance and parasitism rate were confirmed between locations and also between both years of our study.

Pit-building antlion larvae are predators that construct pitfall traps in fine sand. We used three-dimensional laser scanning and geometric morphometrics to reveal the shape of antlion pits of two antlion species, analysed the particle size composition of sands from the different natural habitats, and measured the slope angles of the pits of the two species. In most antlions, the pits are structured as a simple inverted cone, as in Myrmeleon hyalinus, studied here. The other antlion studied, Cueta lineosa, constructs a unique pit composed of two inverted truncated cones inserted into one another, which feature substantially steeper walls than the pits of any other antlion studied to date. Pit stability depends on the slope inclination, which oscillates between the maximum angle of stability and the angle of repose. The angles in C. linosa-substrates were larger than those in M. hyalinus. One reason for the steeper walls is the greater proportion of fine sand in the natural sand inhabited by C. lineosa. However, video-recording revealed that both the natural sand of C. lineosa and the finest sand tested had a higher maximum angle of stability than any of the other substrates studied here. Furthermore, experiments with pits built in different substrates revealed that the shape of the pit is variable and depends on the structure of the sand. M. hyalinus displayed a more flexible pit construction behaviour than C. lineosa. The present demonstration of such differences in pit characteristics contributes to understanding how these two species co-exist in the same habitat.

Pine processionary moth, Thaumetopea pityocampa, is a model insect indicator of global warming, the northwards and upwards range expansion of this Mediterranean species being directly associated with the recent warming up. The knowledge about the drivers of moth expansion is synthesized. A first standardized mapping of the northern expansion edge, from Western Europe to Turkey, is presented, then detailed for 20 countries of Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa, including future trends. Additional data about the responses of the other Thaumetopoea species are given. Finally, the chapter points out the importance of the man-mediated introductions in the expansion process. © Éditions Quæ, 2015.

The Myrmeleontidae fauna of Albania was studied in July of 2012. The study revealed 14 antlion species, which included new records for the country. Among collected species, Myrmeleon hyalinus Olivier, 1811, Euroleon nostras (Geoffroy in Fourcroy, 1785), Macronemurus appendiculatus (Latreille, 1807), Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868, and Neuroleon arenarius (Navás, 1904) are new records for the Albanian fauna. Sand dune habitat in the national park Divjakë Karavasta represents the northernmost known locality of Myrmeleon hyalinus in the Balkan Peninsula.
