Expanding laser plasmas, produced by high energy laser radiation, possess both high thermal and magnetic field energy density. Characterization of such plasma is challenging but needed for understanding of its physical behaviour. Among all standard experimental techniques for plasma diagnostics, classical interferometry is one of the most convenient, informative and accurate. Attempts to extract more information from each single laser shot have led to development of complex interferometry, which under certain processing allows to reconstruct both plasma electron density and magnetic field strength distributions using just one data object. However, the increase in complexity and universality of the diagnostics requires a more detailed analysis of the extracted values and their accuracy.This work focuses on axisymmetric interaction geometry. We present general analysis, starting from the basic principles and trace main error sources, finally ending up with plasma density and magnetic field distributions with the derived error bars. Use of synthetic profiles makes the analysis universal, though we present an example with real experimental data in the Appendix., 24 pages, 28 figures

Measurements had been performed of strong electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) generated as a result of laser–target interaction at the sub-ns kJ-class Prague Asterix Laser System facility. Two conductive Prodyn FD5C D-dot pencil probes were used. Measurements were performed inside the experimental chamber and outside the chamber in a large chamber window 40 cm in diameter in a setup that guaranteed 6 GHz bandwidth. A very good signal-to-noise ratio (17:1) was obtained after some steps were taken to ensure proper EMP shielding of the data collection setup. The EMP signal in the time domain was found to have the form of a sharp initial spike followed by gradually decaying oscillations interspersed with some secondary spikes. The values of the vertical component of the electric field strength were estimated. The highest value recorded in this experiment was 620 − 180 + 260 kV m−1 at a distance of 40 cm from the target. It was observed that plastic targets—particularly the 100s of µm thick plastic foils—tend to generate stronger EMP fields than Cu and Au targets. A time-frequency analysis was performed for a typical shot, clearly showing some spectral features that appear only sometime after the start of the signal and hence indicate EMP generation from secondary sources. Electrons ejected from the target were recorded with the energies exceeding 1.5 MeV, which indicates that highly energetic processes are triggered as a result of the laser–target interaction.

The interaction of supersonic laser-generated plasma jets with a secondary gas target was studied experimentally. The plasma parameters of the jet, and the resulting shock, were characterized using a combination of multi-frame interferometry/shadowgraphy, and x-ray diagnostics, allowing for a detailed study of their structure and evolution. The velocity was obtained with an x-ray streak camera, and filtered x-ray pinhole imaging was used to infer the electron temperature of the jet and shock. The topology of the ambient plasma density was found to have a significant effect on the jet and shock formation, as well as on their radiation characteristics. The experimental results were compared with radiation hydrodynamic simulations, thereby providing further insights into the underlying physical processes of the jet and shock formation and evolution.

Laser plasma created by intense light interaction with matter plays an important role in high-energy density fundamental studies and many prospective applications. Terawatt laser-produced plasma related to the low collisional and relativistic domain may form supersonic flows and is prone to the generation of strong spontaneous magnetic fields. The comprehensive experimental study presented in this work provides a reference point for the theoretical description of laser-plasma interaction, focusing on the hot electron generation. It experimentally quantifies the phenomenon of hot electron retention, which serves as a boundary condition for most plasma expansion models. Hot electrons, being responsible for nonlocal thermal and electric conductivities, are important for a large variety of processes in such plasmas. The multiple-frame complex-interferometric data providing information on time resolved spontaneous magnetic fields and electron density distribution, complemented by particle spectra and x-ray measurements, were obtained under irradiation of the planar massive Cu and plastic-coated targets by the iodine laser pulse with an intensity of above 1016 W cm−2. The data shows that the hot electron emission from the interaction region outside the target is strongly suppressed, while the electron flow inside the target, i.e. in the direction of the incident laser beam, is a dominant process and contains almost the whole hot electron population. The obtained quantitative characterization of this phenomenon is of primary importance for plasma applications spanning from ICF to laser-driven discharge magnetic field generators.

The laser-induced Cavity Pressure Acceleration (CPA) scheme [S. Borodziuk et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 95, 231501 (2009)] allows for effective transformation of the laser energy into the kinetic energy of plasma streams and dense plasma objects. It has been proven that using long-wavelength laser beams, with relatively low energies (up to 500 J for λ1 = 1.315 µm and FWHM = 350 ps), it is possible to accelerate macroparticles to very high velocities (above 107 cm/s). The study of neutron yield showed the benefit of CPA in delivering ion temperatures and density sufficient to reach the thermonuclear region.

Multidimensional modeling of phenomena and processes occurring during the expansion of the laser-produced plasma for different irradiation conditions related to both the laser beam parameters and the target constructions is a very complex issue, especially when modeling requires consideration of kinetic processes associated with the development of various types of microscopic instability. Multidimensional PIC codes create such a possibility, but their use is limited to modeling phenomena even in a very narrow timescale due to the limited computational capabilities of current supercomputers. For this reason, the paper attempts to interpret the results of the spontaneous magnetic field (SMF) measurements obtained during the PALS (Prague Asterix Laser System) experiment [Pisarczyk et al., AIP Adv. 10, 115201 (2020); Pisarczyk et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 102706 (2015)] based on the 2D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model [Jach et al., Computer Modeling of Dynamic Interaction of Bodies by Free Point Method (PWN, Warsaw, 2011)]. The MHD equations were used with included arbitrary (i) current of hot electrons treating it as an additional external current and (ii) ion-sound instability responsible for the increase in anomalous resistance in areas with high temperature and low-density plasma. The spatial distribution of magnetic fields and current density obtained from 2D modeling are in acceptable agreement with the experimental results [Pisarczyk et al., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 62, 115020 (2020); Zaraś-Szydlowska et al., AIP Adv. 10, 115201 (2020); Pisarczyk et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 102706 (2015)]. The inclusion of temporal changes in anomalous resistance in modeling allowed us to explain the persistence of high SMF amplitude at the level of several megagauss after the laser pulse ended due to the effect of magnetic field freezing.

International audience; Radiative shocks (RS) are complex phenomena which are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. The study of such hypersonic shocks in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, is of primary interest to understand the physics at play and also to check the ability of numerical simulations to reproduce the experimental results.In this context, we conducted, at the Prague Asterix Laser System facility (PALS), the first experiments dedicated to the study of two counter-propagating radiative shocks propagating at non-equal speeds up to 25–50 km/s in noble gases at pressures ranging between 0.1 and 0.6 bar. These experiments highlighted the interaction between the two radiative precursors. This interaction is qualitatively but not quantitatively described by 1D simulations. Preliminary results obtained with XUV spectroscopy leading to the estimation of shock temperature and ion charge of the plasma are also presented.

The chemical environments of young planets are assumed to be largely influenced by impacts of bodies lingering on unstable trajectories after the dissolution of the protoplanetary disk. We explore the chemical consequences of impacts within the context of reducing planetary atmospheres dominated by carbon monoxide, methane and molecular nitrogen. A terawatt high-power laser was selected in order to simulate the airglow plasma and blast wave surrounding the impactor. The chemical results of these experiments are then applied to a theoretical atmospheric model. The impact simulation results in substantial volume mixing ratios within the reactor of 5% hydrogen cyanide (HCN), 8% acetylene (C$_2$H$_2$), 5% cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) and 1% ammonia (NH$_3$). These yields are combined with estimated impact rates for the Early Earth to predict surface boundary conditions for an atmospheric model. We show that impacts might have served as sources of energy that would have led to steady-state surface quantities of 0.4% C$_2$H$_2$, 400 ppm HCN and 40 ppm NH$_3$. We provide simulated transit spectra for an Earth-like exoplanet with this reducing atmosphere during and shortly after eras of intense impacts. We predict that acetylene is as observable as other molecular features on exoplanets with reducing atmospheres that have recently gone through their own `Heavy Bombardments', with prominent features at 3.05 $\mu$m and 10.5 $\mu$m., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal

The nuclear reaction known as proton-boron fusion has been triggered by a subnanosecond laser system focused onto a thick boron nitride target at modest laser intensity (∼10^{16}W/cm^{2}), resulting in a record yield of generated α particles. The estimated value of α particles emitted per laser pulse is around 10^{11}, thus orders of magnitude higher than any other experimental result previously reported. The accelerated α-particle stream shows unique features in terms of kinetic energy (up to 10 MeV), pulse duration (∼10 ns), and peak current (∼2 A) at 1 m from the source, promising potential applications of such neutronless nuclear fusion reactions. We have used a beam-driven fusion scheme to explain the total number of α particles generated in the nuclear reaction. In this model, protons accelerated inside the plasma, moving forward into the bulk of the target, can interact with ^{11}B atoms, thus efficiently triggering fusion reactions. An overview of literature results obtained with different laser parameters, experimental setups, and target compositions is reported and discussed.

A resistive target probes were employed to obtain unique characteristics of the dynamic of the laser-matter interaction through the observation of a return current neutralizing the positive target charge caused by electrons definitely leaving the plasma. Experimental observations show that three phases of the laser-produced plasma are well recognized, i.e. the plasma ignition phase, active plasma phase, and afterglow phase already for the lowest laser intensity at the focal point of 108 Wcm-2 . Then, at higher intensities the first two phases strongly dominate and the target current reaches a value of 10 kA. A throughput of plasma barrier for the fastest electrons leaving the plasma is defined, and its value is experimentally estimated. We also present key experiments proving that the duration of the electrical charge on the target is much longer than the duration of the laser-plasma interaction for the entire intensity range.

Laser–plasma interaction (LPI) at intensities $10^{15}{-}10^{16}~\text{W}\cdot \text{cm}^{-2}$ is dominated by parametric instabilities which can be responsible for a significant amount of non-collisional absorption and generate large fluxes of high-energy nonthermal electrons. Such a regime is of paramount importance for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and in particular for the shock ignition scheme. In this paper we report on an experiment carried out at the Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) facility to investigate the extent and time history of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two-plasmon decay (TPD) instabilities, driven by the interaction of an infrared laser pulse at an intensity ${\sim}1.2\times 10^{16}~\text{W}\cdot \text{cm}^{-2}$ with a ${\sim}100~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ scalelength plasma produced from irradiation of a flat plastic target. The laser pulse duration (300 ps) and the high value of plasma temperature ( ${\sim}4~\text{keV}$ ) expected from hydrodynamic simulations make these results interesting for a deeper understanding of LPI in shock ignition conditions. Experimental results show that absolute TPD/SRS, driven at a quarter of the critical density, and convective SRS, driven at lower plasma densities, are well separated in time, with absolute instabilities driven at early times of interaction and convective backward SRS emerging at the laser peak and persisting all over the tail of the pulse. Side-scattering SRS, driven at low plasma densities, is also clearly observed. Experimental results are compared to fully kinetic large-scale, two-dimensional simulations. Particle-in-cell results, beyond reproducing the framework delineated by the experimental measurements, reveal the importance of filamentation instability in ruling the onset of SRS and stimulated Brillouin scattering instabilities and confirm the crucial role of collisionless absorption in the LPI energy balance.

Laser-target interaction experiments demonstrated that the return target current, jTC(t), which neutralizes the target charge appearing when the fastest electrons escape the plasma, is one of principal characteristics of the laser-matter interaction. jTC(t) flowing between the target and the ground is emerging just when the laser intensity exceeds the threshold intensity of the plasma formation. The experimental determination of the number of escaped electrons is primarily based on precise target current observations. We present the experimental observation of jTC(t) neutralizing metallic and plastic targets irradiated with low intensity ranging from 108 to 1013 W/cm2 delivered by KrF and iodine lasers operated at 248-nm and 1315-nm wavelengths, respectively. Our experiments show that the charge appears on targets continuously not only during the laser-plasma interaction but also during the plasma expansion into the vacuum. The analysis of jTC(t) allows us to determine the level of influence of the target surface pollution by chemisorbed hydrocarbons on the plasma production, which is also needed for elucidation of specific processes leading to the target charge and ion emission. Very specific feature of jTC(t) was found for plastic targets. Our experiments also demonstrate that the accompanying phenomenon of low-intensity lasertarget interaction is the generation of electromagnetic pulses that

Intense electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) accompany the production of plasma when a high-intensity laser irradiates a solid target. The EMP occurs both during and long after the end of the laser pulse (up to hundreds of nanoseconds) within and outside the interaction chamber, and interferes with nearby electronics, which may lead to the disruption or malfunction of plasma diagnostic devices. This contribution reports a correlation between the frequency spectrum of the EMP and the distortion of Thomson parabola tracks of protons observed at the kJ-class PALS laser facility in Prague. EMP emission was recorded using a simple flat antenna. Ions accelerated from the front side of the target were simultaneously detected by a Thomson parabola ion spectrometer. The comparison of the two signals suggests that the EMP may be considered to be the source of parabolic track distortion.

Strong magnetic fields of upto 20 T, corresponding to a current of tens of kA were produced in a coil connected to a single-plate of cm2 area irradiated by a kJ-ns laser pulse. The use of such macroscopic plates protects the coil from plasma debris, while maintaining a strong magnetic field for a time-scale much longer than the laser pulse duration. By correlating the measured magnetic field in the coil to the number of electrons emitted from the interaction zone, we deduce that the target capacitance is enhanced by two orders of magnitude because of the plasma sheath in the proximity of the focal spot. The particle-in-cell simulation illustrates the dynamics of sheath potential and current flow through the coil to ground, thus closing the circuit due to the escape of laser-produced hot electrons from the target.

Generation of spontaneous magnetic fields (SMFs) is one of the most interesting phenomena accompanying an intense laser–matter interaction. One method of credible SMFs measurements is based on the magneto-optical Faraday effect, which requires simultaneous measurements of an angle of polarization plane rotation of a probe wave and plasma electron density. In classical polaro-interferometry, these values are provided independently by polarimetric and interferometric images. Complex interferometry is an innovative approach in SMF measurement, obtaining information on SMF directly from a phase–amplitude analysis of an image called a complex interferogram. Although the theoretical basis of complex interferometry has been well known for many years, this approach has not been effectively employed in laser plasma research until recently; this approach has been successfully implemented in SMF measurement at the Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS). In this paper, proprietary construction solutions of polaro-interferometers are presented; they allow us to register high-quality complex interferograms in practical experiments, which undergo quantitative analysis (with an original software) to obtain information on the electron density and SMFs distributions in an examined plasma. The theoretical foundations of polaro-interferometric measurement, in particular, complex-interferometry, are presented. The main part of the paper details the methodology of the amplitude–phase analysis of complex interferograms. This includes software testing and examples of the electron density and SMF distribution of a laser ablative plasma generated by irradiating Cu thick planar targets with an iodine PALS laser at an intensity above about 1016 W/cm2.

We present an experimental study of emission of relativistic electrons, fast ions and DD-fusion neutrons produced by interaction of sub-nanosecond laser radiation with solid targets performed at the PALS facility. Measurements of electron density close to the target surface using the femtosecond interferometry, energy distribution functions of hot electrons far from the target, and time-of-flight spectra of ions are performed. A multi population of electrons is formed as the laser interaction with plasma proceeds. Ions accelerated by hot electrons to MeV energy are emitted in bursts. The neutron yield from the deuterated target is compared to yields obtained from other experiments. Constraint of non-linear processes on the ion acceleration and resulting neutron yields is shown.

Low density foams are widely used for laser plasma interaction studies. Here, we present the results of first direct measurements of a residual level of inhomogeneity of a foam plasma by using a pump-probe technique. It is demonstrated that large scale density modulations in such a plasma can survive a time larger than 1 ns, much longer than the plasma formation time.

Optical generation of compact magnetized plasma structures is studied in the moderate intensity domain. A sub-ns laser beam irradiated snail-shaped targets with the intensity of about 1016 W/cm2. With a neat optical diagnostics, a sub-megagauss magnetized plasmoid is traced inside the target. On the observed hydrodynamic time scale, the hot plasma formation achieves a theta-pinch-like density and magnetic field distribution, which implodes into the target interior. This simple and elegant plasma magnetization scheme in the moderate-intensity domain is of particular interest for fundamental astrophysical-related studies and for development of future technologies.

Parametric instabilities at laser intensities in the range (2-6) x 10(15) W/cm(2) (438 nm, 250 ps, 100-300 J) have been investigated in planar geometry at the Prague Asterix Laser System facility via calorimetry and spectroscopy. The density scalelength of the plasma was varied by using an auxiliary pulse to form a preplasma before the arrival of the main laser beam and by changing the delay between the two pulses. Experimental data show that Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is more effective than Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in degrading laser-plasma coupling, therefore reducing the energy available for the generation of the shock wave. The level of the SBS backscatter and laser reflection is found to be in the range between 3% and 15% of the incident laser energy, while Backward SRS (BRS) reflectivity ranges between 0.02% and 0.2%, depending on the delay between the pulses. Half-integer harmonic emission is observed and provides a signature of Two Plasmon Decay (TPD) occurring around the quarter of the critical density. Data analysis suggests that SRS is driven in beam speckles with high local intensity and occurs in bursts, particularly at higher laser intensities, due to the presence of kinetic mechanisms saturating the SRS growth in the speckles. Time-resolved measurements also show that BRS occurs in the trailing part of the laser pulse, when the plasma has a longer density scalelength. Our measurements also indicate that hot electrons are predominantly produced by SRS rather than TPD. Published by AIP Publishing.

This paper provides a summary of recent research connected with the shock ignition (SI) concept of the inertial confinement fusion which was carried out at PALS. In the experiments, Cu planar targets coated with a thin CH layer were used. Two-beam irradiation experiment was applied to investigate the effect of preliminary produced plasma to shock-wave generation. The 1ω or 3ω main beam with a high intensity >1015W/cm2generates shock wave, while the other 1ω beam with the intensity below 1014W/cm2creates CH pre-plasma simulating the pre-compressed plasma related to SI. Influence of laser wavelength on absorbed energy transfer to shock wave was studied by means of femtosecond interferometry and measuring the crater volume. To characterize the hot electron and ion emission, two-dimensional (2D) Kα-imaging of Cu plasma and grid collector measurements were used. In single 1ω beam experiments energy transport by fast electrons produced by resonant absorption made a significant contribution to shock-wave pressure. However, two-beam experiments with 1ω main beam show that the pre-plasma is strongly degrading the scalelength which leads to decreasing the fast electron energy contribution to shock pressure. In both the single 3ω beam experiments and the two-beam experiments with the 3ω main beam, do not show any clear influence of fast electron transport on shock-wave pressure. The non-monotonic behavior of the scalelength at changing the laser beam focal radius in both presence and absence of pre-plasma reflects the competition of plasma motion and electron heat conduction under the conditions of one-dimensional and 2D plasma expansion at large and small focal radii, respectively.

The paper is a continuation of research carried out at Prague Asterix Laser System (PALS) related to the shock ignition (SI) approach in inertial fusion, which was carried out with use of 1ω main laser beam as the main beam generating a shock wave. Two-layer targets were used, consisting of Cu massive planar target coated with a thin polyethylene layer, which, in the case of two-beam irradiation geometry, simulate conditions related to the SI scenario. The investigations presented in this paper are related to the use of 3ω to create ablation pressure for high-power shock wave generation. The interferometric studies of the ablative plasma expansion, complemented by measurements of crater volumes andKαemission, clearly demonstrate the effect of changing the incident laser intensity due to changing the focal radius on efficiency of laser energy transfer to a shock wave and fast electron emission. The efficiency of the energy transfer increases with the radius of the focused laser beam. The pre-plasma does not significantly change the character of this effect. However, it unambiguously results in the increasing temperature of fast electrons, the total energy of which remains very small (

The application of time-of-flight Faraday cups and SiC detectors for the measurement of currents of fast ions emitted by laser-produced plasmas is reported. Presented analysis of signals of ion detectors reflects the design and construction of the detector used. A similarity relation between output signals of ion collectors and semiconductor detectors is established. Optimization of the diagnostic system is discussed with respect to the emission time of electromagnetic pulses interfering with signals induced by the fastest ions accelerated up to velocities of 107 m/s. The experimental campaign on laser-driven ion acceleration was performed at the PALS facility in Prague.

A system of precise pulse synchronization between a single-shot large-scale laser exploiting an acousto-optical modulator and a femtosecond high repetition rate laser is reported in this article. This opto-electronical system has been developed for synchronization of the sub-nanosecond kJ-class iodine photodissociation laser system (Prague Asterix Laser System-PALS) with the femtosecond 25-TW Ti:sapphire (Ti:Sa) laser operating at a repetition rate 1 kHz or 10 Hz depending on the required energy level of output pulses. At 1 kHz synchronization regime, a single femtosecond pulse of duration about 45 fs and a small energy less than 1 mJ are exploited as a probe beam for irradiation of a three-frame interferometer, while at 10 Hz repetition rate a single femtosecond pulse with higher energy about 7-10 mJ is exploited as a probe beam for irradiation of a two-channel polaro-interferometer. The synchronization accuracy ±100 ps between the PALS and the Ti:Sa laser pulses has been achieved in both regimes of synchronization. The femtosecond interferograms of laser-produced plasmas obtained by the three-frame interferometer and the femtosecond polarimetric images obtained by the two-frame polaro-interferometer confirm the full usefulness and correct functionality of the proposed method of synchronization.

Laser-accelerated ion beams could represent the future of particle acceleration in several multidisciplinary applications, as for instance medical physics, hadrontherapy and imaging field, being a concrete alternative to old paradigm of acceleration, characterized by huge and complex machines. In this framework, following on from the ELIMED collaboration, launched in 2012 between INFN-LNS and ELI-Beamlines, in 2014 a three-years contract has been signed between the two institutions for the design and the development of a complete transport beam-line for high-energy ion beams (up to 60 MeV) coupled with innovative diagnostics and in-air dosimetry devices. The beam-line will be installed at the ELI-Beamlines facility and will be available for users. The measurement of the beam characteristics, such as energy spectra, angular distributions and dose-rate is mandatory to optimize the transport as well as the beam delivery at the irradiation point. In order to achieve this purpose, the development of appropriate on-line diagnostics devices capable to detect high-pulsed beams with high accuracy, represents a crucial point in the ELIMED beamline development. The diagnostics solution, based on the use of silicon carbide (SiC) and diamond detectors using TOF technique, will be presented together with the preliminary results obtained with laser-accelerated proton beams.

The problem of spontaneous magnetic field generation with nanosecond laser pulses raises a series of fundamental questions, including the intrinsic magnetization mechanisms in laser-driven plasmas and the understanding of charge-discharge processes in the irradiated target. These two issues are tightly bound as the charge-discharge processes are defined by the currents, which have in turn a feedback by magnetic fields in the plasma. Using direct polaro-interferometric measurements and theoretical analysis, we show that at parameters related to the PALS laser system (1.315 μ1.315 μm, 350 350 ps, and 1016 1016 W/cm2), fast electrons play a decisive role in the generation of magnetic fields in the laser-driven plasma. Spatial distributions of electric currents were calculated from the measured magnetic field and plasma density distributions. The obtained results revealed the characteristics of strong currents observed in capacitor-coil magnetic generation schemes and open a new approach to fundamental studies related to magnetized plasmas.

Context. It is well known that hydrogen cyanide and formamide can universally be considered as key molecules in prebiotic synthesis. Despite the fact that formamide has been detected in interplanetary and interstellar environments, other prebiotic species are far more abundant, including, for example, formaldehyde. However, several results indicate that formamide can play the role of important intermediate as well as that of a feedstock molecule in chemical abiogenesis. Diverse recently proposed scenarios of the origins of the first biopolymers show that liquid formamide environments could have been crucial for the formation of nucleobases, nucleosides, and for phosphorylation reactions, which lead to nucleotides. Aims. Here we report on a wide exploration of the formaldehyde reaction network under plasma conditions mimicking an asteroid descent in an Earth-like atmosphere and its impact. Methods. Dielectric breakdown using a high-power kJ-class laser system (PALS – Prague Asterix Laser System) along with quantum mechanical, ab initio molecular dynamics, and enhanced sampling simulations have been employed in order to mimic an asteroid impact plasma. Results. Being more abundant than formamide both in interstellar and interplanetary environments, during the era of early and late heavy bombardment of Earth and other planets, formaldehyde might have been delivered on asteroids to young planets. In the presence of nitrogen-bearing species, this molecule has been reprocessed under plasma conditions mimicking the local environment of an impacting body. We show that plasma reprocessing of formaldehyde leads to the formation of several radical and molecular species along with formamide. Conclusion. All the canonical nucleobases, the simplest amino acid (i.e., glycine), and the sugar ribose, have been detected after treatment of formaldehyde and nitrogen gas with dielectric breakdown. Our results, supported by quantum mechanical and enhanced sampling simulations, show that formaldehyde – by producing inter alia formamide – may have had the role of starting substance in prebiotic synthesis.

Interferometry is a widely used active diagnostic method for measurements of physical properties of plasmas. In case of axial symmetry of probed objects an Abel inversion can be used to retrieve plasma density profiles from phase shifts reconstructed from interferograms. This approach is based on the assumption of the diagnostic beam propagating along a straight line. However, it is well known that in case of inhomogeneous media the refraction process affects the diagnostic beam trajectory resulting in an inaccuracy of the retrieved density structure. In order to deal with this unfavourable effect a more sophisticated approach needs to be employed. In this paper a special iterative algorithm is proposed to deal with this issue. This algorithm turns the inversion procedure into series of iterations, where the appropriate distribution of plasma density is found by following the diagnostic beam actual trajectory during its propagation through the inhomogeneous medium. The assumption of axially symmetric plasma distribution still applies. The respective trajectories are calculated using the ray tracing method. This method also allows to use the paraxial wave equation. This iterative algorithm was tested on simulated data with different configurations of plasma density proving its functionality. Results from the simulated data analysis show that using this approach the effect of refraction can be fully compensated and plasma density is thus recovered accurately. Comparison with the results obtained only by the Abel inversion as such is provided for illustration.

The hybrid iodine photodissociation laser SOFIA has been constructed. The pulse feeding the amplifier chain is the idler wave of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) tuned to the atomic iodine transition at 1315 nm. This solid-state oscillator enables ps-synchronization to other laser systems. A homemade automatic stabilization of the OPO idler wave as to wavelength and pointing ensures long-term stable operation of the whole system. The active medium of the SOFIA amplifiers is a mixture of C3F7I and He. The SOFIA pulses are frequency-tripled in two KD*P crystals and then serve as the driver in a two-stage optical parametric amplification scheme in which chirped broadband Ti:sapphire laser pulses are amplified (OPCPA).

In this work photoionized plasmas were created by irradiation of atomic and molecular gases by soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet intense radiation pulses. Two different laser-produced plasma sources, employing a low energy Nd:YAG laser system (NL 129) and a high energy iodine laser system (PALS), were used for creation of photoionized plasmas. In both cases the SXR/EUV beam irradiated the gas stream, injected into a vacuum chamber synchronously with the radiation pulse. Radiation spectra, measured for photoionized plasmas produced in Ne and Ar gases, are dominated by L-shell emission lines except the Ne plasma produced using the high energy system where K-shell emission dominates. Additionally electron density measurements were performed by laser interferometry employing a femtosecond laser system synchronized with the irradiating system. Maximum electron density for Ne plasma, induced using the high energy system, reached 2·1018cm-3. In case of employing the low energy system a detection limit was too high for interferometric measurements, thus only an upper estimation for electron density could be made.

This paper reports on properties of a plasma formed by sequential action of two laser beams on a flat target, simulating the conditions of shock-ignited inertial confinement fusion target exposure. The experiments were performed using planar targets consisting of a massive copper (Cu) plate coated with a thin plastic (CH) layer, which was irradiated by the 1ω PALS laser beam (λ = 1.315 μm) at the energy of 250 J. The intensity of the fixed-energy laser beam was scaled by varying the focal spot radius. To imitate shock ignition conditions, the lower-intensity auxiliary 1ω beam created CH-pre-plasma which was irradiated by the main beam with a delay of 1.2 ns, thus generating a shock wave in the massive part of the target. To study the parameters of the plasma treated by the two-beam irradiation of the targets, a set of various diagnostics was applied, namely: (i) Two-channel polaro-interferometric system irradiated by the femtosecond laser (~40 fs), (ii) spectroscopic measurements in the X-ray range, (iii) two-dimensional (2D)-resolved imaging of the Kαline emission from Cu, (iv) measurements of the ion emission by means of ion collectors, and (v) measurements of the volume of craters produced in a massive target providing information on the efficiency of the laser energy transfer to the shock wave. The 2D numerical simulations have been used to support the interpretation of experimental data. The general conclusion is that the fraction of the main laser beam energy deposited into the massive copper at two-beam irradiation decreases in comparison with the case of pre-plasma. The reason is that the pre-formed and expanding plasma deteriorates the efficiency of the energy transfer from the main laser pulse to a solid part of the targets by means of the fast electrons and the wave of an electron thermal conductivity.

The electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) generated during the interaction of a focused 1.315-μm sub-nanosecond laser pulse with a solid hydrogen ribbon were measured. The strength and temporal characteristics of EMPs were found to be dependent on the target density. If a low density target is ionized during the interaction with the laser, and the plasma does not physically touch the target holder, the EMP is weaker in strength and shorter in time duration. It is shown that during the H2 target experiment, the EMP does not strongly affect the response of fast electronic devices. The measurements of the EMP were carried out by Rohde&Schwarz B-Probes, particularly sensitive in the frequency range from 30 MHz and 1 GHz. Numerical simulations of resonant frequencies of the target chamber used in the experiment at the Prague Asterix Laser System kJ-class laser facility elucidate the peaked structure of EMP frequency spectra in the GHz domain.

A solid hydrogen thin ribbon, produced by the cryogenic system ELISE (Experiments on Laser Interaction with Solid hydrogEn) target delivery system, was experimentally used at the PALS kJ-laser facility to generate intense proton beams with energies in the MeV range. This sophisticated target system operating at cryogenic temperature (~ 10 K) continuously producing a 62 μm thick target was combined with a 600 J sub-nanosecond laser pulse to generate a collimated proton stream. The accelerated proton beams were fully characterized by a number of diagnostics. High conversion efficiency of laser to energetic protons is of great interest for future potential applications in non-conventional proton therapy and fast ignition for inertial confinement fusion.

The current balancing the target charging and the emission of transient electromagnetic pulses (EMP) driven by the interaction of a focused 1.315 μm iodine 300 ps PALS laser with metallic and plastic targets were measured with the use of inductive probes. It is experimentally proven that the duration of return target currents and EMPs is much longer than the duration of laser-target interaction. The laser-produced plasma is active after the laser-target interaction. During this phase, the target acts as a virtual cathode and the plasma-target interface expands. A double exponential function is used in order to obtain the temporal characteristics of EMP. The rise time of EMPs fluctuates in the range up to a few tens of nanoseconds. Frequency spectra of EMP and target currents are modified by resonant frequencies of the interaction chamber.

International audience; Imaging the structure of a radiative shock is a challenging task as the high plasma densities produced need a short wavelength to penetrate the plasma, requiring highly sophisticated imaging techniques. In a recent paper (Stehlé et al., Opt. Commun. 285 (2012) 64–69 [1]) the feasibility of a novel imaging technique using an X-ray laser (XRL) at 21 nm with a pulse duration 0.15 ns was proved. The recorded image was attributed to a shock propagating with a velocity of ~60 km/s. This velocity is in agreement with measurements of the plasma self-emission using time and space resolved diode diagnostics, and also in qualitative agreement with 1D numerical simulations. However, due to the inhomogeneous reflectivity of the XUV imaging mirror and to the low number of XRL photons, the quality of the recorded image was insufficient to unambiguously identify the different shock regions. Thus, arguing an ad hoc spatial resolution of ~0.5 mm and a stepwise representation of the shock–piston system, the potential of the technique to observe a radiative precursor was contested (Busquet's comment (in press) [2]). In this reply we aim at clarifying different aspects of the experimental setup, spatial resolution and other questions raised in this comment in order to back up our findings together with their respective analysis and interpretations.

International audience; Radiative shocks can be produced in gases using high-energy lasers. As the electron density may be higher than the critical density for visible light, radiography with soft x-ray radiation becomes very promising technique to probe these shocks. Feasibility of this method has been proven employing zinc soft x-ray laser at 21.2 nm as backlighter. The experiment has shown high requirements on quality of the imaging optics and windows of the gas filled cell.

International audience; This report presents the results from experiments at PALS Centre using a Zn X-ray laser with the pulse length of 0.15 ns and the wavelength of 21.2 nm, working in single or double pass regime with the output energy of 0.4 mJ or 4 mJ per pulse, respectively. The current X-ray laser was experimentally examined to obtain its temporal coherence and spectral width using a path-difference interferometer. The double pass regime shows that QSS plasma based source-amplifier is promising for "short" fs soft X-ray pulses. The X-ray laser is commonly used for user's experiments. Its advantages can be shown in applications such as probing of dense plasmas (up to 2.5 x 10(24) cm(-3)) or single shot experiments (4 x 10(14) photons/pulse). The simple technique based on Talbot effect was used to obtain the gradients of electron densities of line plasmas produced under conditions corresponding to XRL's amplifiers operating in TCE and QSS regime. To investigate radiative shock wave in laboratory is challenging in aspects of the optimization of experimental parameters. Due to the high electron density (10(22) cm(-3)) produced in the gas medium propagated by the shock wave, the velocity of the shock wave, and the absorption losses on optical elements, it is necessary to use the energetic single shot probe.

International audience; Radiative shock waves propagating in xenon at a low pressure have been produced using 60 joules of iodine laser (λ = 1.315 μm) at PALS center. The shocks have been probed by XUV imaging using a Zn X-raylaser (λ = 21 nm) generated with a 20-ns delay after the shock creating pulse. Auxiliary high-speed silicon diodes allowed performing space- and time-resolved measurement of plasma self-emission in the visible and XUV. The results show the generation of a shock wave propagating at 60 km/s preceded by a radiative precursor. This demonstrates the feasibility of radiative shock generation using high power infrared lasers and the use of XRL backlighting as a suitable diagnostic for shock imaging.

International audience; Strongly radiative shocks are characterized by an ionization front induced by the shock wave. The role played together by opacity and geometry is critical for the physics of these shock waves. Moreover, radiation is an obvious way of probing these shock waves, either by self-emission or by probe absorption. These aspects will be illustrated by recent experimental results obtained at the iodine PALS (Prague Asterix Laser System) facility.

In this work, photoionized plasmas were created by irradiation of gaseous argon with soft x-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intense radiation pulses. Two different laser-produced plasma sources, employing a low energy Nd:YAG laser and a high energy iodine laser system (PALS), were used for creation of photoionized plasmas. In both cases the EUV or SXR beam irradiated the Ar stream, injected into a vacuum chamber synchronously with the radiation pulse. Emission spectra, measured for the Ar photoionized plasmas indicated strong differences in ionization degree for plasmas produced using low and high energy systems. In case of the the EUV driving pulses, emission lines corresponding to neutral atoms and singly charged ions were observed. In case of the SXR pulses utilized for the photoionized plasma creation, only Ar V–VIII emission lines were recorded. Additionally, electron density measurements were performed by laser interferometry employing a femtosecond laser system synchronized with the irradiating system. Maximum electron density for the Ar photoionized plasma, induced using the high energy system, reached 1.9 1018 cm−3. Interferometric measurements performed for the moment of maximum intensity of the main laser pulse (t = 0) revealed no fringe shift. Detection limit for the interferometric measurements was estimated. It allowed to estimate the upper limit for electron density at t = 0 as 5 1016 cm−3.

The first space-time resolved spontaneous magnetic field (SMF) measurements realized on Prague Asterix Laser System are presented. The SMF was generated as a result of single laser beam (1.315 μm) interaction with massive planar targets made of materials with various atomic numbers (plastic and Cu). Measured SMF confirmed azimuthal geometry and their maximum amplitude reached the value of 10 MG at the laser energy of 250 J for both target materials. It was demonstrated that spatial distributions of these fields are associated with the character of the ablative plasma expansion which clearly depends on the target material. To measure the SMF, the Faraday effect was employed causing rotation of the vector of polarization of the linearly polarized diagnostic beam. The rotation angle was determined together with the phase shift using a novel design of a two-channel polaro-interferometer. To obtain sufficiently high temporal resolution, the polaro-interferometer was irradiated by Ti:Sa laser pulse with the wavelength of 808 nm and the pulse duration of 40 fs. The results of measurements were compared with theoretical analysis.

A comparative study of photoionized plasmas created by two soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (SXR/EUV) laser plasma sources with different parameters is presented. The two sources are based on double-stream Xe/He gas-puff targets irradiated with high (500 J/0.3 ns) and low energy (10 J/1 ns) laser pulses. In both cases, the SXR/EUV beam irradiated the gas stream, injected into a vacuum chamber synchronously with the radiation pulse. Irradiation of gases resulted in formation of photoionized plasmas emitting radiation in the SXR/EUV range. The measured Ne plasma radiation spectra are dominated by emission lines corresponding to radiative transitions in singly charged ions. A significant difference concerns origin of the lines: K-shell or L-shell emissions occur in case of the high and low energy irradiating system, respectively.
