The precopulatory behaviour of the larviform females of Ripidius quadriceps Abeille de Perrin, 1872 is described. The calling posture of virgin females is documented. The cephalic morphology and microstructures are visualised using scanning electron microscopy, in particular the secretory pores in the cuticle of inflatable maxillary palps. An exhaustive overview of relevant publications revealed that the location of secretory pores on the head of females is unique within the order Coleoptera. Compared to other beetles with sedentary calling females, the calling phase of the short-lived and non-feeding female of Ripidius is exceptionally short. For bioassays, various traps using virgin females of Ripidius were tested. It is likely that the sedentary behaviour of the short-lived female combined with a unique morphology and priority for investing in reproduction is compensated for by the actively flying males with remarkably flabellate antennae. The life cycle of this species, including some of the exceptions recorded at the individual level, is discussed. Perspectives for a biological and morphological survey of this rarely collected western Palaearctic species are outlined. In addition, the calling behaviour, secretory sites and location of pheromone glands in females of Coleoptera producing long range pheromones is reviewed.

The parasitic wedge-shaped beetle Ripidinelia burmiticola gen. nov. et sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae: Ripidiinae) is described and illustrated based on a single male inclusion preserved in a mid-Cretaceous amber of Myanmar. The species shows an unique combination of characters, i.e., three-segmented maxillary palpi known for example in another Cretaceous genus Protoripidius Cai, Yin et Huang, 2017 and some extant Australian genera, 11-segmented antennae with three basal antennomeres simple and remaining antennomeres bearing long rami, known for example in extant genus Ripidius Thunberg, 1806 but unique among Cretaceous Ripidiinae, and each tibia armed by one tibial spur. Additional seven males including one double and one triple syninclusions from the same deposit are ascribed to the same genus. The presence of tibial spurs in Ripidinelia gen. nov. requires redefinition of the subfamily Ripidiinae, because tibial spurs were absent in all so far known species of the subfamily.

The Eocene records of the beetle family Ripiphoridae are evaluated and summarized. A new species of Pelecotominae belonging to the genus Clinops, C. svachaisp. nov. from Baltic amber, is described and figured. The female holotype of C. svachai is the first Palaeogene member of this subfamily to be identified. In addition, a male of a different unidentified genus of Pelecotominae, preserved as an inclusion in Baltic amber, is documented. The first Palaeogene primary larva of Ripiphoridae is described from Sakhalin amber and is compared with all other primary larvae of this family. The larva is attributed to Ripidius (Ripidiinae) and bears some unique characters absent in larvae of this extant genus. A putative record of Ripiphorus (Ripiphorinae) in the Berendt collection is identified as a member of Ripidius. Distribution of Eocene species are compared with those of their closest extant relatives and mapped. Based on the fossil record and the distribution of extant South African species of Clinops, this genus is tentatively thought to be an example of an Eocene relict, while the extant pelecotomine genus Scotoscopus from the East Mediterranean is considered to be an Oligocene–Miocene relict as its distribution corresponds with the geological history of the Aegais landmass.

A diversity of new wedge-shaped beetles (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) are described and figured from Burmese amber, representing three new genera and five new species in two subfamilies – Ripidiinae and Pelecotominae. Amberocula gen. nov., is the third genus of Ripidiini documented from the Upper Cretaceous (lowermost Cenomanian) amber of northern Myanmar. Three species are included in the genus: Amberocula muelleri sp. nov. (type species), A. costata sp. nov., and A. fallax sp. nov. Amberocula is represented by six single male inclusions and one quadruple male syninclusion (for A. muelleri ). The genus is distinguishable by the combination of number and shape of antennomeres and tarsomeres, reduced mouthparts, and shape of the head, compound eyes, and thorax relative to all extant and fossil members of the tribe Ripidiini. In addition, three single male inclusions and one syninclusion of six males indistinguishable from Paleoripiphorus deploegi Perrichot, Nel, and Neraudeau (Ripidiini) are reported. Described syninclusions of both genera support the previous assumption of aggregative-like behavior of male Ripidiini may be a groundplan feature of the tribe and responsible for the presence of such syninclusions. Two monotypic genera, Plesiotoma alissae gen. et sp. nov. and Burmitoma nalae gen. et sp. nov., are representative of the subfamily Pelecotominae and are also described and figured. The inclusions represent the second and third definitive records for the subfamily in Cretaceous amber, and also the discovery of fossil pelecotomine females. They differ from the contemporaneous Flabellotoma Batelka, Prokop and Engel in the presence of more complete tibial spur formulas and the absence of a ventral abdominal microsclerite. The presence of three species of Amberocula , additional material of P. deploegi , and two new genera of Pelecotominae demonstrates a surprising abundance of ripiphorids in Cretaceous amber, and we provide comments on the past diversity of this parasitoid family during the period, as well as observations on the nature of their preservation and paleoethology. The known diversity of Mesozoic Tenebrionoidea is cataloged and a key to the Cretaceous diversity of Ripiphoridae is presented.

Taxonomy of bees (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) of the Socotra Archipelago is evaluated based on historical and newly available specimens. Four new species of Halictidae are described from the Socotra Island: Austronomia socotrana Pauly & Straka sp. nov., Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) boswelliae Pauly & Straka sp. nov., Lasioglossum (Sphecodogastra) dioscoridis Pauly & Straka sp. nov., and Lasioglossum (Ctenonomia) dracaenae Pauly & Straka sp. nov. The correct original spelling of Eucera wfkirbyi Kohl, 1906 is restored, Eucera kirbyi Friese, 1909 being its unjustified emendation and junior objective synonym. Identity of both Socotran species of Xylocopa Latreille, 1802 is clarified. Lasioglossum (Evylaeus) kowitense (Cockerell, 1937), Nomioides facilis (Smith, 1853), and Nomioides rotundiceps Handlirsch, 1888 are removed from the list of bees of Socotra. In total, 28 species in 16 genera are reported from the archipelago, of which nearly two thirds are considered endemic at the species level. Biogeographic origin of Socotran bees is analysed and proposed. Host associations with beetle parasites of the families Meloidae and Ripiphoridae (Coleoptera) and cleptoparasitic bees are evaluated for the Socotran bee fauna. Obligate bee parasitoid Ripiphorus arabiafelix arabiafelix Batelka, 2009 (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae) is reported from the archipelago (Socotra Island) for the first time.

Summary Life cycles of parasites, particularly those with complex life histories and developmental pathways, are rarely preserved as fossils in total. 1 The evidence is almost universally biased toward incomplete perspectives derived from a single sex or life stage. 2 , 3 Here, we report a piece of Cretaceous Burmese amber that contains 28 males, a larviform female, and two longipede larvae of the wedge-shaped beetle Paleoripiphorus, and its potential cockroach host. Collectively, this fossil represents the complete series of free-living stages (except of the last larval instar) for a 99-million-year-old parasitoid insect from Myanmar ( Figure 1 and Supplemental Information ). The wedge-shaped beetles (Ripiphoridae) are of special interest among parasitoids because of their obligatory, protelean development in larvae of cockroaches, beetles, bees and wasps. 4

Taxonomic notes are provided on species of the uncommonly encountered ripiphorid subfamily Pelecotominae. Zapotecotomasumichrastigen. et sp. nov., is described from southern Mexico based on a unique male likely collected in the later part of the mid-19th Century. The discovery of additional species of the South African genus Clinops Gerstaecker permit a revised diagnosis and distinction of the group from the eastern Mediterranean genus Scotoscopus Brenske and Reitter, resurrected status. Two new species of Clinops are established: Clinopsinexpectatussp. nov. (northeast of Durban near Swaziland) and C.perpessussp. nov. (region of Durban), and Scotoscopusspectabilis (Schaufuss) is newly recorded for the Peloponnese in Greece.

Ripiphoridae phylogeny inferred from rRNA and mtDNA markers and 23 taxa from four subfamilies is presented. Despite much denser sampling than previous studies and completeness of the assembled dataset, the phylogenetic signal from molecular markers remains ambiguous. The dataset does not support monophyly of Ripiphoridae and suggests the Ripiphoridae + Mordellidae clade with ripiphorid lineages forming gradual splits basally to Mordellidae. Previous hypotheses on relationships of Meloidae and Ripiphoridae and a single origin of developmental modifications are refuted. The ripiphorid subfamilies are regularly recovered and we found Pelecotominae and Ptilophorinae among deep splits. Ripidiinae, despite morphological divergence, are regularly found within the ripiphorid+mordellid clade in a sister relationships to Ripiphorinae + Mordellidae. The genus Aphanommata in the Old World is reviewed. Aphanommata kuscheli sp. nov. from São Nicolau and A. strakai sp. nov. from Fogo (both Cape Verde islands) are described. Aphanommata euphorbiarum (Wollaston, 1867) from Santo Antão in the Cape Verde islands is redescribed and its lectotype is designated. All three Aphanommata species from the Cape Verde islands as well as A. filum (Mulsant & Rey, 1859) from Old World are diagnosed, illustrated, and keyed. Mature larva of A. kuscheli sp. nov. is described, larval morphology is discussed and the current state of knowledge about immature stages of Cossoninae is summarized. Vertical and inter-insular distributional pattern of Cape Verde Aphanommata and Pselactus is reviewed and discussed.

Taxonomy of the genus Denierella Kaszab, 1952 (Coleoptera: Meloidae: Epicautini) is evaluated. The following new synonyms and combinations (all from the genus Epicauta Dejean, 1834) are established: Denierella thailandica (Dvořak, 1996) comb. nov. = D. striolata Yang & Ren, 2007 syn. nov.; Denierella emmerichi (Pic, 1934) comb. nov. = D. serrata Kaszab, 1952 syn. nov.; Denierella promerotricha (Dvořak, 1996) comb. nov. A lectotype is designated for Epicauta emmerichi. Epicauta emmerichi yunnanensis Kaszab, 1960 is provisionally raised to E. yunnanensis stat. nov., until its status can be confirmed by the study of the holotype specimen. Five new country records, one new Chinese province record and two new Indian state records of six Denierella species are provided, and the distribution of all species included in this study is outlined. A checklist of the genus Denierella is provided and general problems in the taxonomy of Asiatic Epicautini are discussed.

Stylopised (= parasitised by Strepsiptera Stylopidae) imagoes of Andrena (Hymenoptera Andrenidae) bees are known to exhibit intersexual morphology. Until now, their abnormal morphology has been thought to result from undernourishment of parasitised larvae during development. This hypothesis, however, dos not fit to mass provisioning Hymenoptera. We hypothesised that induced changes in the suite of morphological characters might be a consequence of manipulation of sex-specific behavioural traits by a strepsipteran parasite. Thus, the masculinised morphology of stylopised females might be connected with shifts in their sexual behaviour. Two new species of the cossonine genus Aphanommata Wollaston, 1873 from Cape Verde are described, Aphanommata kuscheli sp. n. and Aphanommata strakai sp. n, with bibliographic reference to fuller descriptions and illustrations in the recent paper by Skuhrovec et al. (2018) published in the journal Diversity 10 (2), 28, in which the names were not made available under the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature dealing with electronic publication. Macrosiagon deuvei n. sp., the second fossil representative of this extant genus of Ripiphoridae: Ripiphorinae: Macrosiagonini is described from the lowermost Eocene amber of Oise (France). The new species is compared with the extant species of the genus. Taxonomic position of other two fossil representatives of the family described from France by Perrichot et al. (2004) is discussed. The genus Paleoripiphorus Perrichot et al. 2004 is tentatively transferred from Ripiphorinae to Ripidiinae.

The genus Pselactus in the Cape Verde Islands is reviewed. Pselactus obesulus (Wollaston, 1867) from São Vicente is redescribed and P. strakai sp. nov. from São Nicolau is described. Both species are diagnosed and illustrated; their larvae are described, larval morphology is discussed and the current state of knowledge about immature stages of Cossoninae is summarized. The systematic position of the genus within Onycholipini is reviewed, and the placement of genus in Cossoninae is discussed. A short note on biogeography of Pselactus is provided.

A replacement name is established to remove homonymy between a genus of ripidiine beetles (Ripiphoridae) in mid-Eocene Baltic amber and a group of extant longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) from Southeast Asia. Olemehlia Holzschuh (type species: Olemehlia mystica Holzschuh) was established for a species of Disteniinae from Vietnam, while Olemehlia Batelka (type species: Olemehlia krali Batelka) was described for a species of Ripidiinae, with both names appearing within a few weeks of each other. Olemehliella Batelka, new name, is established for the ripidiine name which is junior, resulting in the new combination: Olemehliella krali (Batelka).

A new Strepsiptera genus from South America is described, Rozenia gen. n., with three new species: Rozenia calliopsidis sp. n. (type species), Rozenia peruana sp. n. and Rozenia platicephala sp. n. These three new species are parasites of bees belonging to the tribe Calliopsini (Andrenidae, Panurginae). Rozenia calliopsidis sp. n. is a parasite of the bee genus Calliopsis Smith, 1853 and Rozenia peruana sp. n. and Rozenia platicephala sp. n. are parasites of the bee genus Acamptopoeum Cockerell, 1905. Diagnoses and descriptions of female puparia are presented for all three species. Diagnoses and descriptions of first instars (triungulinids) are presented for Rozenia calliopsidis sp. n. and Rozenia platicephala sp. n. The first case of increased number of setae on the body of the first instars and augmentation of chaetotaxy of Strepsiptera are discussed.

Taxonomy and distribution of the genus Pterydrias Reitter, 1895 (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae: Ripidiinae) are revised. Based on examination of the type material, the genus Pterydrias is confirmed as a senior synonym of the genus Eorhipidius Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1986. Pterydrias debilis Reitter, 1895 is redescribed and illustrated, and its type locality is corrected to Haifa, Israel. The following new combinations are established: Pterydrias januschevi (IablokoffKhnzorian, 1986) comb. nov., P. jelineki (Batelka & Hajek, 2009) comb. nov., P. loebli (Batelka & Hajek, 2009) comb. nov., and P. ruzickai (Batelka & Hajek, 2009) comb. nov. (all from Eorhipidius). An identification key to all species is provided and their distributions are mapped.

Diaphorocera carinicollis Chobaut, 1921, from Sahara, is redescribed and lectotype is designated. It is compared with D. johnsoni Kaszab, 1983, from Saudi Arabia and D. obscuritarsis Fairmaire, 1885, from North Africa. Ripiphorus caboverdianus sp. nov. (Ripiphoridae, Ripiphorinae) from Boavista Island (Cape Verde archipelago) represents the first record of the family Ripiphoridae from the volcanic islands west of Africa and the first record of the genus Ripiphorus on an isolated volcanic archipelago worldwide. Its significance for our understanding of oceanic dispersal abilities of the subfamily Ripiphorinae is discussed. The new species is characterized by milky white elytra, hyaline hind wings and translucent membranous suture between dorsal and ventral surface of the first abdominal segments in both sexes. Female has a slightly curved hind tibia, 2× wider at the apex than at its base, and a slender, parallel-sided first metatarsomere, 5× as long as wide. Morphology of the free-living first instar larva is described; it is very similar to R. smithi Linsley & MacSwain, 1950. Behavioral observations of the adults and the first instar larvae in the type locality are given. Known hosts of the genus Ripiphorus are reviewed; possible host-association and conservation implications for the new species are discussed.

A new genus and species, Olemehlia krali n. g. & n. sp. (Coleoptera: Ripiphoridae: Ripidiinae), is described from Baltic amber. The newly described genus is compared with all known fossil and extant closely related genera of the subfamily Ripidiinae. It is characterised by the following combination of characters: antennae consisting of 10 antennomeres, with scape, pedicel, and antennomere 3 simple and antennomeres 4–10 uniflabellate, mouthparts reduced to a small single unpaired tubercle, postocular ommatidia absent, pronotum trapezoid without grooves or impressions, elytra without white apical spots, tarsal formula 5–5–4, hind tarsomere I shorter than three remaining combined. Diversity of Ripiphoridae in Baltic amber is discussed; key to Ripidiinae genera from Baltic amber is provided.
