6. Revealing How Much Drivers Understand about Vehicle Pollutants : Towards Development of Information Campaigns

Abstract

Thirty-four interviews were carried out with drivers in four countries to elicit their understanding about pollutants, specifically nitrogen dioxide (NOX) and particulate matter (PM). The results showed that most of the participants knew that cars emitted carbon dioxide (CO2), but they were less aware of the emission of NOx and PM. Also, being aware of the negative impacts of pollutants did not necessarily lead to eco-friendly vehicle choices. Most of the drivers were aware of pollutant friendly behaviours such as avoiding harsh acceleration/deceleration and maintaining smooth speed but were unaware of behaviours such as efficient gear use, avoiding engine idling, or anticipation of traffic ahead. Only a few mentioned pre-trip or strategic level behaviours (e.g., vehicle size/weight or the selection of appropriate routes and avoidance of traffic congestion). 17. Does Emotionality and Private self-consciousness influence drivers' cognitive appraisal in anger-provoking situations?—An explorative study in Chinese drivers.

Abstract

In recent decades, most studies have investigated the role of drivers' demographic background, dispositional traits, and cognitive appraisal in driving anger in an independent manner. However, it is possible that driver's dispositions and their cognitive appraisal could impact driving anger concurrently. The present study aims to investigate how the individual's characteristics (e.g., age, gender, and dispositions) influence state driving anger when considering the role of cognitive appraisal undertaken in anger-provoking situations. 17 anger-provoking scenarios using the Measure for Angry Drivers (MAD) were employed to probe the cognitive appraisal of Chinese drivers. The participants completed the Private self-consciousness scale (Prsc), the Brief HEXACO Inventory, and questions related to cognitive appraisal and state driving anger. Several ANCOVAs were performed to evaluate age and gender differences in state driving anger, Emotionality and Prsc. Results indicated that younger drivers reported higher state driving anger and Emotionality. While males and females exhibited similar levels of state driving anger, they significantly differed in Emotionality, instead of the Prsc. Moreover, a Partial Least Squared Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) found that age showed no direct impact on cognitive appraisal, but gender did. Importantly, Emotionality was found to be directly and positively related to state driving anger rather than the cognitive appraisal, while Prsc was indirectly associated with state driving anger if considering the driver's cognitive appraisal. Abstract

This article profiles the travel behavior of sport fans against the transtheoretical model of change (TTM) and its application to sport events. Using the four constructs of the TTM, we distributed a self-reporting survey to sport fans prior to home fixtures. There is some synergy with the theorized stages of change and processes of change in this context. Notwithstanding, the results showed a high level of commitment to others in the early stages of change—a movement away from the prescribed theory. Results from decisional balance and self-efficacy items reaffirmed the congruence with theory and the application of the TTM to sport fans and their travel behavior. This study assessed the application of a stage-based model of change within a sport event context; it provides an exploration of the antecedents of behavior change indicators relevant to sport fans, thus enabling policy makers to make informed decisions about future travel behavior change. 48. Cross-cultural differences in drivers’ behaviour: a driving simulator study

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a cross-cultural study carried out with the intent of finding out which, among culture and road environment, has a greater influence on driver behaviour. To achieve this, the driving style of Nigerians with no experience of driving in the UK was compared to that of Nigerians with some experience of driving in the UK and to British drivers. It was hypothesised that those Nigerian drivers with no experience of driving in a highly regulated UK road system would not be encouraged to adopt a safe driving style. This would have implications for the use of road safety interventions in Nigeria that have been developed outside the Nigerian context. A driving simulator experiment was designed and carried out, comparing the driving style of these three groups of drivers in different conditions. The conditions varied depending on how much regulation was provided (low and high infrastructure). Data were analysed using R version 3.5.1 and SPSS version 24. Generally, results showed that there were distinct differences in behaviour between all the groups in most of the traffic scenarios. Nigerian drivers were more likely to engage in unsafe driving behaviours compared to other drivers. Improvements in the road environment did not bring about any significant changes in the behaviour of Nigerian drivers. There were no significant differences in the behaviour of Nigerian drivers with some experience of driving in the UK and that of British drivers in almost all scenarios. The results indicate that the behaviours of drivers are interpretable in relation to their traffic safety culture, and are partly influenced by their driving environment.

Abstract

International audience; The paper describes some of the major results of the European Project ecoDriver. This five-year project aimed to deliver to drivers the most effective support and feedback on green driving by optimising the driver-powertrain-environment feedback loop. To reach the goal, a set of activities, from the design to development of demonstrable eco-driving systems, was carried out. Twelve European partners were involved, fulfilling one of the ideologies of User-Centred Design (UCD) by having complementary skills (system design, automotive engineering, human factors and behavioural economics). The starting point was a set of overall principles and concepts derived from the Ecological Interface Design (EID) approach. Those top-down principles and concepts were then developed and tested, based on the appreciation that drivers play a crucial role in influencing their vehicle's energy consumption and resulting emissions, and therefore needed to be involved as the detailed design was developed. Following a suite of driving simulator experiments and qualitative research, the project partners designed three types of eco-driving systems. A common Human Machine Interface (HMI) was defined and a range of systems tested on-real roads with naïve users. The results showed positive effects on energy-saving and safety, high acceptability and no demonstrable impact on workload. Additionally, the cost benefit analysis results provided a complete picture for stakeholders. As long as the human driver continues to be in the loop, eco-driving systems are very promising means to provide energy savings and reduce emissions. A combined EID and UCD methodology should be adopted from the outset of the design phase, covering both technical and HMI aspects in order to maximize user and societal benefits.
