We studied the occurrence and characteristics (sizes, shapes, and polymer compositions) of microplastics (MPs) in a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at the University of Mississippi both spatially and temporally. Putative MPs were isolated by sieving, matrix digestion, and density separation, and quantified using stereomicroscopy, with a subset of samples analyzed by Focal Plane Array (FPA) μ-FTIR imaging. In the influent, the highest MP concentration (particles/L ± 1 SD, n = 3) occurred after a football game on campus (62.3 ± 7.6) and the lowest (19.7 ± 2.1) during the summer with little activity on campus. Over 90% of the MPs were removed in the primary treatment. Downstream, MPs were most abundant in the closed loop reactor with concentrations as high as 1962 particles/L. Concentrations in secondary clarifier and final treated effluent were both < 4 particles/L during both normal flow (∼2000 m3/d) and high-flow (>2500 m3/d) periods, and between 16 and 39 particles/L during a low-flow (

Fifty four domestically produced cannabis samples obtained from different USA states were quantitatively assayed by GC–FID to detect 22 active components: 15 terpenoids and 7 cannabinoids. The profiles of the selected compounds were used as inputs for samples grouping to their geographical origins and for building a geographical prediction model using Linear Discriminant Analysis. The proposed sample extraction and chromatographic separation was satisfactory to select 22 active ingredients with a wide analytical range between 5.0 and 1,000 µg/mL. Analysis of GC-profiles by Principle Component Analysis retained three significant variables for grouping job (Δ9-THC, CBN, and CBC) and the modest discrimination of samples based on their geographical origin was reported. PCA was able to separate many samples of Oregon and Vermont while a mixed classification was observed for the rest of samples. By using LDA as a supervised classification method, excellent separation of cannabis samples was attained leading to a classification of new samples not being included in the model. Using two principal components and LDA with GC–FID profiles correctly predict the geographical of 100% Washington cannabis, 86% of both Oregon and Vermont samples, and finally, 71% of Ohio samples.

In this research, cannabis varieties represent 23 USA States were assayed by GC-FID to generate their complex chemical profiles informative for plants clustering. Results showed that 45 cannabinoids and terpenoids were quantified in all plant samples, where 8 cannabinoids and 18 terpenoids were identified. Among organics, Δ9-THC, CBN (cannabinoids) and Fenchol (terpenoid) not only showed the highest levels overall contents, but also were the most important compounds for cannabis clustering. Among States, Washington, Oregon, California and Hawaii have the highest cannabis content. GC-FID data were subjected to PCA and HCA to find (1) the variations among cannabis chemical profiles as a result of growing environment, (2) to reveal the compounds that were responsible for grouping cultivars between clusters and (3) finally, to facilitate the future profile prediction and States clustering of unknown cannabis based on the chemical profile. The 23 cannabis USA States were grouped into three clusters based on only Δ9-THC, CBN, C1 and Fenchol content. Cannabis classification based on GC-profile will meet the practical needs of cannabis applications in clinical research, industrial production, patients' self-production, and contribute to the standardization of commercially-available cannabis cultivars in USA.

Sapropel is an organic-rich sediment formed under conditions that can result in sequestration of trace metals. Here, we determined the concentration of total mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and 16 other metals (Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Sr, Tl, U, V, Zn) in a sapropel core from Mangrove Lake, Bermuda that dated back nearly two millennia. The purpose was to assess historical patterns of metal deposition on this geographically remote island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Two sediment cores were collected from Mangrove Lake using a modified piston corer. Cores were age-dated with a Bayesian statistical age-depth model using a multiproxy approach relying on 210Pb and radiocarbon dates. Total Hg was determined following US EPA Method 7473 using a direct mercury analyzer. Other metals were determined by sector field ICP-MS following a microwave-assisted strong-acid digestion. Stable isotope measurements of Hg and Pb were used to better track sources of these contaminants. Sapropel Hg concentrations were low (~ 50 ng g−1) from about 1000 AD to 1600 AD, followed by a slow rise in concentration until a high point of 209 ng g−1 in the early nineteenth century. Hg levels then returned to ~ 70 ng g−1, still elevated above baseline levels, before a final sharp rise in the mid-1900s to 430 ng g−1. Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Ba had similar patterns, with Pb isotope ratios showing early natural fluctuations followed by the greater influence of pollution sources. Mercury stable isotope data also show the influence of anthropogenic sources during the 1800s and suggest a mix of atmospheric, terrestrial, and possibly marine-derived Hg inputs to the lake. The vertical distribution of elements and isotopes reveals changes in deposition through time associated with pollution from industrialization, and, possibly, volcanic activity, seawater intrusion, intense hurricane events, and local pollution from ship and fortress building. Overall, this study demonstrates that organic-rich sapropel provides a good historical record of metal contamination, and that Bermuda, despite its remote location, had metal deposition profiles much like the records of other sediment cores from around the world.

Mercury is a toxic element that is dispersed globally through the atmosphere. Accurately measuring airborne mercury concentrations aids understanding of the pollutant&rsquo, s sources, distribution, cycling, and trends. We deployed MerPAS&reg, passive air samplers (PAS) for ~4 weeks during each season, from spring 2019 to winter 2020, to determine gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) levels at six locations along the northern Gulf of Mexico, where the pollutant is of particular concern due to high mercury wet deposition rates and high concentrations in local seafood. The objective was to (1) evaluate spatial and seasonal trends along the Mississippi and Alabama coast, and (2) compare active and passive sampling methods for GEM at Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, an Atmospheric Mercury Network site. We observed higher GEM levels (p &lt, 0.05) in the winter (1.53 &plusmn, 0.03 ng m&minus, 3) compared to other seasons at all sites, with the general pattern being: winter &gt, spring &gt, summer &asymp, fall. Average GEM levels (all deployment combined) were highest at Bay St. Louis (1.36 &plusmn, 0.05 ng m&minus, 3), the western-most site nearest the New Orleans metropolitan area, and lowest at Cedar Point (1.07 &plusmn, 0.09 ng m&minus, 3), a coastal marsh with extensive vegetation that can uptake GEM. The MerPAS units compared reasonably well with the established active monitoring system, but gave slightly lower concentrations, except in the winter when the two methods were statistically similar. Both the passive and active sampling methods showed the same seasonal trends and the difference between them for each season was &lt, 15%, acceptable for evaluating larger spatial and temporal trends. Overall, this work demonstrates that PASs can provide insight into GEM levels and the factors affecting them along coastal regions.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the marine environment but characterizing them in marine organisms is challenging. Herein we describe a method to detect, identify, and quantify microplastics in marine mussels (Mytilus edulis) using thermal gravimetric analysis – Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy – gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-FTIR-GC/MS) after extracting and isolating the microplastics using chemical digestion, density separation, and filtration. Combining the three instrumental techniques adds discriminatory power as temperature profiles, chromatograms, and vibrational and mass spectra differ among common plastics. First, we tested several digestion schemes after spiking the mussels with plastics commonly found in the marine environment, including polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). KOH (10%, w/v) was the most suitable reagent, providing good recoveries (>97%) without degrading the microplastics. We show that the technique TGA-FTIR-GC/MS can be optimized to readily determine both the type (polymer) and amount (mass) of microplastics in the sample. Applied to 100 mussels from each of six locations along the coast of China, we found an average of 0.58 mg of plastic per kg of tissue (range 0.16–1.71 mg/kg), with PE being the most abundant type of plastic measured. Among the coastal cities, mussels from Dalian had the highest microplastic content. Overall, we demonstrate that the method is a powerful technique to quantify masses of microplastics in marine mussels, a species commonly used as a bioindicator of pollution, and may be applied to other biota as well.

Much of the seafood that humans consume comes from estuaries and coastal areas where microplastics (MPs) accumulate, due in part to continual input and degradation of plastic litter from rivers and runoff. As filter feeders, oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are especially vulnerable to MP pollution. In this study, we assessed MP pollution in water at oyster reefs along the Mississippi Gulf Coast when: (1) historic flooding of the Mississippi River caused the Bonnet Carr&eacute, Spillway to remain open for a record period of time causing major freshwater intrusion to the area and deleterious impacts on the species and (2) the spillway was closed, and normal salinity conditions resumed. Microplastics (~25 &micro, m&ndash, 5 mm) were isolated using a single-pot method, preparing samples in the same vessel (Mason jars) used for their collection right up until the MPs were transferred onto filters for analyses. The MPs were quantified using Nile Red fluorescence detection and identified using laser direct infrared (LDIR) analysis. Concentrations ranged from ~12 to 381 particles/L and tended to decrease at sites impacted by major freshwater intrusion. With the spillway open, average MP concentrations were positively correlated with salinity (r = 0.87, p = 0.05) for sites with three or more samples examined. However, the dilution effect on MP abundances was temporary, and oyster yields suffered from the extended periods of lower salinity. There were no significant changes in the relative distribution of MPs during freshwater intrusions, most of the MPs (&gt, 50%) were in the lower size fraction (~25&ndash, 90 &micro, m) and consisted mostly of fragments (~84%), followed by fibers (~11%) and beads (~5%). The most prevalent plastic was polyester, followed by acrylates/polyurethanes, polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyacetal. Overall, this work provides much-needed empirical data on the abundances, morphologies, and types of MPs that oysters are exposed to in the Mississippi Sound, although how much of these MPs are ingested and their impacts on the organisms deserves further scrutiny. This paper is believed to be the first major application of LDIR to the analysis of MPs in natural waters.

We describe a new approach for the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at precise locations in the air using active sampling on sorbent tubes outfitted to an inexpensive multicopter and analysis by thermal desorption (TD) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The aerial sampling method permits for the simultaneous collection of multiple air samples on separate TD tubes concurrently, increasing sample throughput compared to single canister sampling. Furthermore, the method is relatively inexpensive when compared to similar approaches, with overall costs below about $2000 (U.S. dollars). To demonstrate applicability, we measured VOCs at several heights near anthropogenic sources in the mid-south USA, including a municipal landfill, petroleum refinery, and a coal-fired power plant (CFPP), and within the canopy of a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forest. Wastewater treatment systems collect and treat sewage that includes microplastics (MPs). However, we are not aware of any studies on the occurrence and distribution of MPs in wastewater stabilization ponds (WSPs), which serve small communities worldwide. Here, we characterized MPs (~45 µm–5 mm) in an aerated WSP serving ~500 houses and an adjacent lake. Putative MPs were most abundant in duckweed (Lemna minor) and sludge (75 ± 22 and 12.8 ± 3.1 particles/g, respectively: ±1 standard deviation (SD), n = 6, dry weight). In the water, average concentrations (particles/L ± 1 SD, n = 6) were highest in the pond (4.1 ± 0.6), followed by effluent (3.9 ± 0.5) and the lake (2.6 ± 0.6). Over 20 types of MPs were identified in each different compartment, with the distribution varying somewhat between the water, sludge, and duckweed. Polyester and polyethylene were the predominant types, followed by polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and others. Morphologies consisted of fibers (62–71%), fragments (28–37%), and beads (1–6%). High-density polymers were more frequently found in sludge. Potential sources of the MPs include synthetic textiles from laundry and other plastics washed down household drains. Overall, with ~786,000 MPs/day released in the pond effluent and with duckweed a source of food for waterfowl, we demonstrate that WSPs can be point sources of MPs to both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and thus deserve further scrutiny.

Rapid advances in 3D-printing technology have created an emerging class of firearms. As the movement to self-manufacture firearms with 3D-printing grows, it is reasonable to assume that they will be increasingly used in crimes. Here, we test-fired gun barrels made with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene terephthalate (PETG), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), and nylon. The resulting cartridge cases, bullets, and gunshot residue (GSR) were examined by direct analysis in real time – mass spectrometry (DART-MS). High-resolution mass spectra detected polymer from the gun barrel on bullets and cartridge casings for a 0.38 special caliber gun and, to a lesser extent, for a 0.22 caliber 3D-printed gun. Particles of plastic were identified in some GSR samples collected from clothing used as a backstop for test-fires. DART-MS also readily detected signature organic GSR compounds, including methyl centralite, ethyl centralite, diphenylamine, and nitrocellulose, on recovered bullets, cartridge cases, and in extracts of SEM stubs used to collect GSR from the clothing. Overall, this study demonstrates that analysis of firearm trace evidence using DART-MS deserves more attention, and that the technique may be particularly useful for investigating crimes involving 3D-printed guns.

BACKGROUND There has been controversy as to whether the glyphosate resistance gene and/or glyphosate applied to glyphosate-resistant (GR) soybean affect the content of cationic minerals (especially Mg, Mn, and Fe), yield and amino acid content of GR soybean. A two-year field study (2013 and 2014) examined these questions at sites in Mississippi, USA. RESULTS There were no effects of glyphosate, the GR transgene, or field crop history (for a field with both no history of glyphosate use versus one with a long history of glyphosate use) on grain yield. Furthermore, these factors had no consistent effects on measured mineral (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Ca, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, U, V, Zn) content of leaves or harvested seed. Effects on minerals were small and inconsistent between years, treatments, and mineral and appeared to be random false positives. No notable effects on free or protein amino acids of the seed were measured, although glyphosate and its degradation product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), were found in the seed in concentrations consistent with previous studies. CONCLUSIONS Neither glyphosate nor the GR transgene affect the content of the minerals measured in leaves and seed, harvested seed amino acid composition, or yield of GR soybean. Furthermore, soils with a legacy of GR crops have no effects on these parameters in soybean.

Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant with human health and ecological impacts. Gas exchange between terrestrial surfaces and the atmosphere is an important route for Hg to enter and exit ecosystems. Here, we used a dynamic flux chamber to measure gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) exchange over different landscapes in Mississippi, including in situ measurements for a wetland (soil and water), forest floor, pond, mowed field and grass-covered lawn, as well as mesocosm experiments for three different agricultural soils. Fluxes were measured during both the summer and winter. Mean ambient levels of GEM ranged between 0.93&ndash, 1.57 ng m&minus, 3. GEM emission fluxes varied diurnally with higher daytime fluxes, driven primarily by solar radiation, and lower and more stable nighttime fluxes, dependent mostly on temperature. GEM fluxes (ng m&minus, 2 h&minus, 1) were seasonally dependent with net emission during the summer (mean 2.15, range 0.32 to 4.92) and net deposition during the winter (&minus, 0.12, range &minus, 0.32 to 0.12). Total Hg concentrations in the soil ranged from 17.1 ng g&minus, 1 to 127 ng g&minus, 1 but were not a good predictor of GEM emissions. GEM flux and soil temperature were correlated over the forest floor, and the corresponding activation energy for Hg emission was ~31 kcal mol&minus, 1 using the Arrhenius equation. There were significant differences in GEM fluxes between the habitats with emissions for grass &gt, wetland soil &gt, mowed field &gt, pond &gt, wetland water &asymp, forest &asymp, agriculture soils. Overall, we demonstrate that these diverse landscapes serve as both sources and sinks for airborne Hg depending on the season and meteorological factors.

As a global pollutant, microplastics have attracted attention from the public and researchers. However, the lack of standard and time-saving methods for analysis has become one of the bottlenecks in microplastics research. Here, we demonstrate TGA coupled to FTIR to identify and quantify certain microplastics in environment. Samples were pyrolyzed in TGA and the pyrolysis gases were analyzed by FTIR. Combining TGA and FTIR data adds discriminatory power as temperature profiles and absorption spectra differ among several common plastics. To quantify on a mass basis, we calibrated on characteristic IR peaks at temperatures of maximum weight loss for individual polymers. The method can distinguish PVC, PS and was validated by spiking samples with known quantities of microplastics. The result of field sample experiments showed that TGA-FTIR can be used to identify and quantify PVC and PS in bivalves, seawater and soil. And the method may be applicable to environmental samples.

The purpose of this work is to indicate the actinides input to the total radiation dose caused by the irradiated graphite of the RBMK-1500 reactor in comparison to the dose delivered by other nuclides. We used computer codes (SCALE 6.1 and MCNPX 2.7) to estimate the dose rate delivered by actinides giving special attention to the 244Cm isotope as a critical contributor to the total activity of actinides in the spent graphite for approximately up to 200 years. The concentrations of Pu, Am and Cm isotopes in the graphite sample from the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Unit 1 have been measured with the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and specific isotope ratios have been compared with alpha spectrometric results as well as with the values simulated by the computer codes. Good agreement of the experimental results and the simulated ratios serves as an additional confirmation of validity of the calculation models. The effective doses rates of inhalation and ingestion for personnel, gamma radiation power, and nuclides, which constitute the neutron source in the irradiated RBMK-1500 graphite constructions, have also been identified. The obtained results are important for decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP and other NPPs with graphite-moderated reactors.

Much of the toxic methylmercury (MeHg) that biomagnifies in the aquatic food chain and accumulates in fish and seafood is believed to originate from microbial methylation of inorganic Hg(+2) in anoxic sediments. Elemental profiles in cores of tree trunks (bole wood) have been used for environmental monitoring and reconstruction of metal pollution history. Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that can be accurately measured in tree rings in a simple and pragmatic fashion using a direct mercury analyzer (DMA) that is based on thermal decomposition, amalgamation, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In this feasibility study, we demonstrate that the ash remaining after the DMA analyses can be used to quantify a wide range of other non-volatile elements (Ba, Be, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Th, and U) in that same sample of wood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted acid digestion. Other elements (Ag, Cd, Cs, Rb, Tl, and V) exhibited poor recoveries, possibly due to losses during sample preparation. We assessed the accuracy with reference materials, spikes, and by comparison with EPA Method 3052 (Microwave Assisted Acid Digestion of Siliceous and Organically Based Matrices). For the first group of elements (deemed suitable for the method), recoveries ranged between 80% and 120% and the relative standard deviation was generally < 15%, indicating acceptable precision. We applied the method to five species of trees: eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana), loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata), white oak (Quercus alba), and tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) from Holly Springs National Forest in north Mississippi, USA. Mercury concentrations (ng/g ± SE) were highest in the cedar (1.8 ± 0.3; n = 5), followed by loblolly pine (1.6 ± 0.3, n = 3), shortleaf pine (1.2 ± 0.2; n = 3), oak (1.1 ± 0.2; n = 5), and poplar (0.5 ± 0.1; n = 5). Concentrations of other elements were generally Fe > Mg > Ba ≈ Sr ≈ Mn > Cr ≈ Cu > Ni ≈ Rb > Co > Ga ≈ Ag, with the other elements generally below the method detection limit (MDL). Overall, we showed that the DMA can be used to not only determine total Hg in segments of tree core, but can serve as the ashing step in the preparation of wood for ICP-MS analysis, thus allowing the determination of non-volatile elements along with Hg in the very same sample.

Municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs) serve an essential role in reducing mercury (Hg) pollution. However, few studies quantified the transport and transformation of Hg through MWTPs, particularly plants based on the anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A2/O) process. Here, we present a mass balance for total mercury (THg) and total methylmercury (TMeHg) at the plant, and investigate the influence of pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen on the occurrence and fate of methylmercury (MeHg) in the system. The concentrations of the THg and TMeHg in the raw sewage were 40.3 ± 26.6 ng/L (4.3 ± 2.7 g/day) and 1.9 ± 0.6 ng/L (193 ± 58 mg/day), respectively. Their concentrations in the plant's effluent water were 7.4 ± 1.5 ng/L (0.74 ± 0.2 g/day) and 0.04 ± 0.01 ng/L (3.9 ± 1.0 mg/day), corresponding to decreases of ~82% for THg and ~98% for TMeHg. Within the plant, only ~10% of the THg was removed with primary sedimentation, as Hg in the raw sewage was predominately in dissolved form. In contrast, a significant portion of TMeHg (~43%) was associated with incoming particulate matter. Much of the remaining Hg was removed in subsequent A2/O process and secondary clarifiers, with a ~78% of the THg entering the plant transferring to the dewatered sludge (concentration 1.05 ± 0.28 μg/g; 3.2 ± 0.8 g/day). These same steps decreased TMeHg in the water by ~95%, with 90% TMeHg degradation. In addition, the most important factor that impacted the variation of TMeHg concentrations was pH, then was temperature. Dissolved oxygen showed no relationship with TMeHg and DMeHg. Overall, this study demonstrates that A2/O MWTPs effectively remove MeHg from wastewater, however, sludge remains an important potential source of Hg to the environment.

Humans throughout the world are exposed regularly to mixtures of environmental toxicants. Four of the most common heavy metal toxicants in the environment are mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cdd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As). Numerous previous studies assessed the effects and disposition of individual metals in organ systems; however, humans are usually exposed to mixtures of toxicants or metals rather than to a single toxicant. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to test the hypothesis that exposure to a mixture of toxic heavy metals alters the disposition of single metals in target organs. Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were exposed to Hg, Cd, Pb, or As as a single metal or as a mixture of metals. Rats were injected intravenously for three days, following which kidneys, liver, brain, and blood were harvested. Samples were analyzed for content of Hg, Cd, Pb, and As via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. In general, exposure to a mixture of metals reduced accumulation of single metals in target organs. Interestingly, exposure to mixtures of metals with Pb and/or As increased the concentration of these metals specifically in the liver. The findings from this study indicate that exposure to mixtures of toxic heavy metals may alter significantly the distribution and accumulation of these metals in target organs and tissues.

Fish gill is the site for many crucial physiological functions. It is among the first sites of xenobiotic exposure, and gill histopathological alterations may be detected soon after toxicant exposure. Silver (Ag) is one of the most toxic metals to aquatic organisms mainly due to its ability to disrupt ionic regulation. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of ionic and nanoscale Ag on fathead minnow gills by examining gill histology and Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase immunoreactivity. Fathead minnows were exposed to two measured concentrations of silver nitrate (AgNO3: 1.3 or 3.7 μg/L as Ag(+)), citrate silver nanoparticles (citrate-AgNP: 15 or 39 μg/L), and polyvinylpyrrolidone-AgNP (PVP-AgNP) (AgNP: 11 or 50 μg/L). Circulatory disturbances were the most prevalent gill alterations detected and were significantly increased in all Ag treatment groups compared to control. AgNO3 (1.3 μg/L) was the only treatment that significantly elevated the number of total mucous goblet cells present. In all other Ag treatments, the percent of degenerated goblet cells was significantly increased compared to control. When the sum of all histopathological abnormalities (weighted index) was calculated, all Ag groups displayed a significantly higher index, with citrate-AgNP having the highest toxicity (index of 10 ± 0.32 versus 2.4 ± 0.6 in controls). Gill Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase immunoreactivity was decreased by Ag. These results indicated that both AgNO3 and AgNP created similar disruptions in gill structure and ionic regulation, possibly due to the ionic Ag portion of each treatment.

A commercially available direct mercury analyzer (DMA) based on sample combustion, pre-concentration by amalgamation with gold, and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was coupled to a sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The combined system (DMA-ICP-MS) was optimized and evaluated for the determination of mercury in environmental samples using both external calibration and isotope dilution for quantitation. The method was validated using certified reference materials, including sediment, leaves, and fish-muscle tissue. The Mississippi River drainage basin includes the Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Arkansas rivers. These rivers drain areas with different physiography, population centers, and land use, with each contributing a different suites of metals and wastewater contaminants that can affect water quality. In July 2012, we determined 18 elements (Be, Rb, Sr, Cd, Cs, Ba, Tl, Pb, Mg, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in the five major tributaries and in the Upper Mississippi River. The following summer, we determined both trace elements and 25 trace organic compounds at 10 sites in a longitudinal study of the main stem of the Mississippi River from Grafton, Illinois to Natchez, Mississippi. We detected wastewater contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds, throughout the river system, with the highest concentrations occurring near urban centers (St. Louis and Memphis). Concentrations were highest for atrazine (673 ng L−1), DEET (540 ng L−1), TCPP (231 ng L−1), and caffeine (202 ng L−1). The Illinois, Missouri, and Yazoo rivers, which drain areas with intense agriculture, had relatively high concentrations of Chl-a and atrazine. However, the Ohio River delivered higher loads of contaminants to the Mississippi River, including an estimated 177 kg day−1 of atrazine, due to higher flow volumes. Concentrations of heavy metals (Ni, V, Co, Cu, Cd, and Zn) were relatively high in the Illinois River and low in the Ohio River, although dissolved metal concentrations were below US EPA maximum contaminant levels for surface water. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the rivers can be distinguished based on elemental and contaminant profiles.

There has been controversy as to whether the glyphosate resistance gene and/or glyphosate applied to glyphosate-resistant (GR) soybean affect the content of cationic minerals (especially Mg, Mn and Fe), yield and amino acid content of GR soybean. A two-year field study (2013 and 2014) examined these questions at sites in Mississippi, USA.There were no effects of glyphosate, the GR transgene or field crop history (for a field with both no history of glyphosate use versus one with a long history of glyphosate use) on grain yield. Furthermore, these factors had no consistent effects on measured mineral (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Ca, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Fe, Ga, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, U, V, Zn) content of leaves or harvested seed. Effects on minerals were small and inconsistent between years, treatments and mineral, and appeared to be random false positives. No notable effects on free or protein amino acids of the seed were measured, although glyphosate and its degradation product, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), were found in the seed in concentrations consistent with previous studies.Neither glyphosate nor the GR transgene affect the content of the minerals measured in leaves and seed, harvested seed amino acid composition, or yield of GR soybean. As a continuation of our recent work that studied temporal patterns of atmospheric mercury (Hg) species in northern Mississippi during 2011–2012, we applied an air quality modeling system, the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ), to evaluate model ability in capturing ambient concentration of atmospheric Hg in both summer and winter. The model captured well in the surface ozone and nitrogen dioxide concentrations for both summer and winter months. But it lacked skill in reproducing sulfur dioxide concentration, with significant overestimates in both summer and winter. The model underestimated weekly wet deposition of total Hg partly because of errors in precipitation from the meteorological model. The air quality model overestimated atmospheric ambient elemental Hg (GEM) concentration in summer and slightly underestimated it in winter. The model exhibited good skill in capturing seasonal variability of reactive gaseous mercury (GOM), while it produced a significant overestimate for particulate mercury (PBM) in both summer and winter. Sensitivity tests revealed that anthropogenic emissions had great influences on local/regional ambient concentrations of GEM, GOM, and PBM, with anthropogenic emissions, making a contribution of 10–20 % for ambient GEM, 20–40 % for GOM, and 40–60 % for PBM. The evident influence of anthropogenic sources on Hg concentration suggests that discrepancies between modeled and observed are partly attributable to the uncertainties associated with the anthropogenic emission inventory used in the air quality modeling system. In the future, model performance is expected to be improved by use of 2011 emission data.

The environmental toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is of increasing concern due to their intensified production, use and subsequent environmental release. To further understand nanoparticle toxicity, more knowledge is needed about the particle fate upon uptake. AgNPs were identified in both the GI tract and gill of fathead minnows using field-flow-fractionation interfaced to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (FFF-ICP-MS).
