Introduction: The Remote First Aid Self-Efficacy Scale was originally developed as a 30-item self-report instrument designed as an evaluation tool for training providers and a reflection tool for course participants. Remote first aid training courses and programs are designed for remote communities, worksites, and other wilderness contexts involving activities such as recreation, education, and therapy. Self-efficacy refers to the strength of the beliefs a person has in their capacity to organize and take the necessary actions towards any given attainment. The purpose of our study was to measure the reliability and validity of the 15-Item Remote First Aid Self-Efficacy Scale (RFA SES) in French and English populations. Methods: Alumni from SIRIUSMEDx wilderness first aid courses were invited via email to complete either a French or English online questionnaire at two different time periods (T1 & T2). Data collection involved using online questionnaires containing demographic questions, the 15-Item RFA SES, and the 10-Item Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). Data analysis involved assessing the scale for internal consistency, test re-test reliability, and concurrent validity. Results: There were 58 French and 47 English alumni respondents from SIRIUSMEDx courses for a total of 105 respondents. Internal consistency was high amongst the French group (alpha = .95) and the English group (alpha = .92). Test re-test reliability was high amongst the French group, (r = 0.78, p < .01), and the English group (r = .92, p < .01). The correlations between the RFS SES and GSES were positive and moderate in the French group (r = 0.53, p < .01), as well as in the English group (r = 0.32, p = .03). Conclusions: Results from this study suggest that both the French and English 15-Item RFA SES are reliable and valid. This shorter 15-item version is now available for use, along with the original validated 30-Item version of the RFA SES. Future research should focus on validation of the scale in other contexts and populations, using the scale as a participant reflection tool, and using it for evaluation of training programs and courses.

This article explores the consequences that the conditions of incarceration have on the linguistic make-up of literary texts that result from or reflect on them. Due to the island’s colonial history, Ireland has a rich canon of confinement literature, but – largely as a result of this very same history – these literary works have often been studied through a binary cultural lens, reinforcing what Declan Kiberd has termed the ‘quarantine’ of Ireland’s literatures, with English kept on one side of the language fence, Irish on the other. Drawing on Ian O’Donnell and Eoin O’Sullivan’s concept of ‘coercive confinement’ in order to include carceral institutions outside the formal criminal justice system, this article examines four case studies in which Irish writers cross the borders of language quarantine when writing about coercive confinement, focusing on selected works by Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Brendan Behan, Seamus Heaney and Melatu Uche Okorie. Just as the conditions of confinement that gave rise to these works differ widely, so too do the literary strategies employed to represent or respond to these situations of incarceration. While Ireland’s literary languages have historically existed in quarantine, we hope to show that this linguistic confinement is often breached by Irish writers responding to actual instances of imprisonment. This article focuses on Samuel Beckett’s use of the asylum in his novel Malone Dies to explore the role of non-textual elements in genetic criticism (the study of a writer’s creative process through the analysis of their compositional manuscripts), as well as the function of the author in genetic analysis. Taking as its starting point Iain Bailey’s challenge to genetic critics to account for the biographical author which underpins the discipline’s study of written traces in authorial manuscripts, the article contends that genetic criticism must be used in tandem with other approaches such as historicism when studying spaces like Beckett’s asylums. Though Beckett took a scholarly approach when integrating such material into earlier work, making research notes which can be regarded as part of the genetic dossier, the asylum in Malone Dies – based on Dublin’s Saint John of God Hospital – leaves no such trail of textual breadcrumbs. Therefore, we must pay particular attention to the historical function of Saint John of God’s in order to understand how the asylum works in composition and reception. In doing so, an author existing beyond the written traces they leave behind can retake their place in a necessarily incomplete empirical field over five decades after Roland Barthes prematurely declared their death.

Abstract Background Gasless laparoscopy, developed in the early 1990s, was a means to minimize the clinical and financial challenges of pneumoperitoneum and general anaesthesia. It has been used in a variety of procedures such as in general surgery and gynecology procedures including diagnostic laparoscopy. There has been increasing evidence of the utility of gasless laparoscopy in resource limited settings where diagnostic imaging is not available. In addition, it may help save costs for hospitals. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the available evidence surrounding the safety and efficiency of gasless laparoscopy compared to conventional laparoscopy and open techniques and to analyze the benefits that gasless laparoscopy has for low resource setting hospitals. Methods This protocol is developed by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis–Protocols (PRISMA-P). The PRISMA statement guidelines and flowchart will be used to conduct the study itself. MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and Global Index Medicus (WHO) will be searched and the National Institutes of Health Clinical Trials database. The articles that will be found will be pooled into Covidence article manager software where all the records will be screened for eligibility and duplicates removed. A data extraction spreadsheet will be developed based on variables of interest set a priori. Reviewers will then screen all included studies based on the eligibility criteria. The GRADE tool will be used to assess the quality of the studies and the risk of bias in all the studies will be assessed using the Cochrane Risk assessment tool. The RoB II tool will assed the risk of bias in randomized control studies and the ROBINS I will be used for the non-randomized studies. Discussion This study will be a comprehensive review on all published articles found using this search strategy on the safety and efficiency of the use of gasless laparoscopy. The systematic review outcomes will include safety and efficiency of gasless laparoscopy compared to the use of conventional laparoscopy or laparotomy. Abstract Background The most appropriate treatment of pathological fractures from metastatic disease depends on several factors, one of the most important being predicted life expectancy. The aim of this study was to identify the variables that influence prognosis and utilise these to develop a novel scoring system to better predict life expectancy post-pathological fracture. Methods The records of all patients that presented with metastatic pathological fractures over a 10-year period from the only tertiary orthopaedic departments in Western Australia were retrospectively examined. Variables assessed were primary cancer type, fracture site, fixation method, cement augmentation, pre-morbid level of physical functioning, complication rate, treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy and appendicular, spinal and visceral metastatic load. Results A total of 233 patients were included. Median survival from fracture to death was 4.1 months. Median time from cancer diagnosis to pathological fracture was 14.2 months. There was a statistically significant association between patient survival and primary cancer type, physical functional score, spinal metastatic burden and use of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Conclusion A novel scoring system has been developed that offers a survival probability based on patient’s individual circumstances. This can guide specialist management and offer patients a more accurate expectation of functional outcome and survival time.

The Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) is a lightweight web-based editing tool that is intended to let users do two things: (1) generate enhanced authority records for creators of archival collections and (2) publish the content of those records as Wikipedia pages. The RAMP editor can extract biographical and historical data from EAD finding aids to create new authority records for persons, corporate bodies, and families associated with archival and special collections (using the EAC-CPF format). It can then let users enhance those records with additional data from sources like VIAF and WorldCat Identities. Finally, it can transform those records into wiki markup so that users can edit them directly, merge them with any existing Wikipedia pages, and publish them to Wikipedia through its API.

Abstract Given the increasing importance of liquefied natural gas in the global energy system, an understanding of natural gas value chain Greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly important. Here, we develop models of the key unit processes in the liquefied natural gas value chain: liquefaction, shipping, and regasification. We utilize detailed process-level data for liquefaction terminals and ships to generate granular estimates. Average gate-to-gate emissions of 0.220 and 0.269 tonnes of CO2e/tonne gas liquefied were estimated for US liquefied gas exported from Sabine Pass and Cove Point liquefaction terminals, respectively. Furthermore, 331 voyages are modeled from four US ports reaching 30 countries, and the average gate-to-gate emissions for the countries to Asia are the highest at 0.200 tonnes CO2e/tonnes of gas delivered. The estimated average gate-to-gate emissions for regasification terminals is 0.021 tonnes CO2e/tonne of gas regasified. The developed models can be expanded to other regions, offering a global analysis provision.

Natural gas is an emerging and reliable energy source in transition to a low-carbon economy. The natural gas transportation pipeline network systems are crucial when transporting natural gas from the production endpoints to processing or consuming endpoints. Optimizing the operational efficiency of compressor stations within pipeline networks is an effective way to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions during transportation. This paper proposes an optimization framework for natural gas transportation pipeline networks based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The mathematical simulation model is derived from mass balance, hydrodynamics principles of gas flow, and compressor characteristics. The optimization control problem in steady state is formulated into a one-step Markov decision process (MDP) and solved by DRL. The decision variables are selected as the discharge ratio of each compressor. By the comprehensive comparison with dynamic programming (DP) and genetic algorithm (GA) in three typical element topologies (a linear topology with gun-barrel structure, a linear topology with branch structure, and a tree topology), the proposed method can obtain 4.60% lower power consumption than GA, and the time consumption is reduced by 97.5% compared with DP. The proposed framework could be further utilized for future large-scale network optimization practices.
