The new Kosciuszko Bridge, also known as the K Bridge, is a twin-span, cable-stayed structure that traverses Newtown Creek, linking the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens via the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway, which runs east to west. Built in two phases, the eastbound bridge was completed in April 2017, and the westbound bridge was completed in August 2019. Both phases represent the first major bridge in New York City since the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge in 1964, and it is the state’s first cable-stayed bridge.

In the dialog between genetics and religion, the genetics of religion has received thoughtful attention from the possibility of free will to the evolution of human religious behavior. In this article, the author focuses on the reverse, the religion of genetics – specifically, two aspects of how religion shapes our understanding and use of genetics. If religion is (as often argued) whatever our ultimate concern or worldview is, it gives context and direction for the study and application of genetics. Some of the implications are traced through two examples of interaction with one religion, the varied Christian tradition.

Abstract: The biology of Homo sapiens is continuous with other hominids and the rest of life. Yet in Homo sapiens we find emergent capabilities that constitute a unique being. It is this being to whom God introduces God's self, making possible the bearing of the imago Dei, the image of God. Much more than just a special capacity, the imago Dei is also a relationship with God and a way of life that follows. That relationship with God and resulting ethic is the highest purpose of human capacity and uniqueness, when by God's continuing provision Homo sapiens can be welcomed as Homo Dei, people of God.

Pain is ubiquitous, and occurs in varying domains including emotional and mental anguish, with intensities that vary from mild to debilitating, and roles such as interpersonal or spiritual distress. The way people and caregivers cope with pain may be adaptive or maladaptive depending on the nature of the pain. We propose a typology of pain that invites reflection on these components in each case in order to discern best alleviation. In our application of the proposed model we consider a range of treatment options practiced by counselors and available to those who are suffering. This multi-perspective approach to treatment informs both our discussion and its usefulness for most practitioners who employ some form of intra-disciplinary integration.

Described are studies directed toward the chemical research and development of an alternative synthesis to 9, the penultimate intermediate of clofencet (1), a novel wheat-hybridizing agent. Retrosynthetic analyses as well as the results obtained from feasibility studies are detailed, leading to the successful development of an alternative process. The key features of the novel route are a method for preparing on-scale ethyl diazoacetate (28) in a safe and effective manner, and the Lewis acid-catalyzed reaction of 28 with hydrazonoacetaldehyde 29, affording β-ketoester 30. The synthesis is completed via propionylation of 30, acid-catalyzed cyclization of 31 to pyridazinecarboxylic acid ester 32, followed by saponification and isolation of carboxylic acid 9. The results and challenges of eight pilot-plant runs are reported. The baseline process developed produced over 45 kg of 9 in 43−45% yield.

Background: There is continued controversy related to flexibility gains from different stretching protocols and within single protocols. Stretching methods include static, ballistic, dynamic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). A combination of stretching methods may be an improved way to increase active knee range of motion (ROM). This study evaluated a single program formulated with static and ballistic components. Objective: To compare active knee ROM following stretching programs which either included combined static and ballistic stretching (CSBS) or static stretching (SS) alone. It was hypothesized that CSBS would show a greater increase in active knee ROM than SS. Setting: The pre- and post- measurements were performed in a laboratory. Subjects were randomly assigned to either treatment group or a non-stretching control group and given written instructions on how to perform their designated protocol at home. Subjects: Forty-three (33M, 10F) healthy collegiate aged participants (24.0 + 3.69 yrs, 176.21 + 10.0 cm, 78.15 + 12.93 kg) with no history of injury to the lower extremity or low back for the previous 6 months were eligible to participate in the study. Interventions: Two treatment groups either performed SS or CSBS for 30 seconds on each leg, twice a day for 2 weeks. All subjects but 3 provided both legs, and each leg was evaluated separately, providing 83 total measurements. Main Outcome Measures: A Johnson Digital Inclinometer was used to measure active knee extension. A mixed ANOVA with a Tukey post hoc test was used for statistical analysis. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in active knee ROM between groups at the pre-test, F(2,80)=1.062, p=.351, partial ƞ2=.026 (SS: 52.56 + 7.50º, CSBS: 49.84 + 8.91⁰, control: 49.39 + 10.09⁰). There was a statistically significant difference in active knee ROM between groups at the post-test, F(2,80)=29.034, p .05). There was homogeneity of covariance’s, as assessed by Box's test of equality of covariance matrices (p = .076). There was homogeneity of variances, as assessed by Levene's test of homogeneity of variance (p>.05). Conclusions: SS and CSBS are equally effective for improving active knee ROM. A trend indicating CSBS showing only slightly greater differences may be due to limited time allowed to master the CSBS method, with no supervision during stretching sessions.

Reported are the reaction calorimetry results obtained from a new ethyl diazoacetate preparative method, the results from its use in a novel, exothermic reaction and the application of this data toward process development, a successful pilot plant campaign and full-scale reactor design. The results indicate that, given the proper engineering design, in situ preparation and use of ethyl diazoacetate solutions can be used at production scale without significant risk.

A comprehensive quality assurance program was applied to the analysis of phthalate esters in sediment. By utilizing the rapid ultrasonic extraction of dried sediment and the detection capabilities of selected ion monitoring mass spectrometry, the analytical scheme has been simplified to reduce systematic errors due to contamination and to improve recoveries. Matrix blank levels were 2.5 ng in 5 g of dry samples, and spiked field sample recoveries were greater than 90%. Identification of different phthalate species was accomplished by multiple ion monitoring of characteristic ion fragments and retention time comparisons. Eleven phthalate species have been measured in representative samples from various sites in the Chesapeake bay and the Chester river, Maryland.

Initial screening of the moderately volatile range of the tire fire oil prior to fractionation was performed using capillary gas chromatography with dual, simultaneous detection. Samples were analyzed with a postcolumn split to a flame ionization capture detector (FID) and an electron capture detector (ECD); no peaks were detected by the ECD. Using another system with the column split to an FID and a thermionic specific detector (TSD) sensitive to nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing compounds, several components were detected that were not evident in the complex FED chromatogram. The TSD-FID response data complemented the mass spectral data for identifications. 2 tables, 4 figures.
