After deep venous thrombosis (DVT), many patients have impaired quality of life (QOL). We aimed to assess whether pharmacomechanical catheter-directed thrombolysis (PCDT) improves short-term or long-term QOL in patients with proximal DVT and whether QOL is related to extent of DVT.The Acute Venous Thrombosis: Thrombus Removal with Adjunctive Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis (ATTRACT) trial was an assessor-blinded randomized trial that compared PCDT with no PCDT in patients with DVT of the femoral, common femoral, or iliac veins. QOL was assessed at baseline and 1 month, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months using the Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study on Quality of Life/Symptoms (VEINES-QOL/Sym) disease-specific QOL measure and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary general QOL measures. Change in QOL scores from baseline to assessment time were compared in the PCDT and no PCDT treatment groups overall and in the iliofemoral DVT and femoral-popliteal DVT subgroups.Of 692 ATTRACT patients, 691 were analyzed (mean age, 53 years; 62% male; 57% iliofemoral DVT). VEINES-QOL change scores were greater (ie, better) in PCDT vs no PCDT from baseline to 1 month (difference, 5.7; P = .0006) and from baseline to 6 months (5.1; P = .0029) but not for other intervals. SF-36 PCS change scores were greater in PCDT vs no PCDT from baseline to 1 month (difference, 2.4; P = .01) but not for other intervals. Among iliofemoral DVT patients, VEINES-QOL change scores from baseline to all assessments were greater in the PCDT vs no PCDT group; this was statistically significant in the intention-to-treat analysis at 1 month (difference, 10.0; P .0001) and 6 months (8.8; P .0001) and in the per-protocol analysis at 18 months (difference, 5.8; P = .0086) and 24 months (difference, 6.6; P = .0067). SF-36 PCS change scores were greater in PCDT vs no PCDT from baseline to 1 month (difference, 3.2; P = .0010) but not for other intervals. In contrast, in femoral-popliteal DVT patients, change scores from baseline to all assessments were similar in the PCDT and no PCDT groups.Among patients with proximal DVT, PCDT leads to greater improvement in disease-specific QOL than no PCDT at 1 month and 6 months but not later. In patients with iliofemoral DVT, PCDT led to greater improvement in disease-specific QOL during 24 months.

The primary tumor side is emerging as a prognostic factor for patients with liver metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). In a combined analysis of data from 2 randomized studies, the addition of selective internal radiation therapy to first-line chemotherapy in patients with mCRC was associated with statistically and clinically significant overall survival gains for patients with a right-sided primary tumor. Background: The primary tumor side is emerging as a major prognostic factor for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). We examined the survival data from 2 randomized studies to determine whether the outcomes differ between patients with mCRC with right-sided primary (RSP) tumors and those with left-sided primary (LSP) tumors after selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) plus mFOLFOX6 (folinic acid [leucovorin], 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin) chemotherapy, versus chemotherapy alone. Patients and Methods: Separate and combined analyses were performed on the data from the SIRFLOX and FOXFIRE global trials, which compared chemotherapy plus SIRT with chemotherapy alone for patients with mCRC liver metastases. The primary tumor side data were prospectively collected. The principal outcome measure was overall survival (OS) stratified by treatment and primary tumor side. Results: In the combined analysis of all 739 patients enrolled, SIRT had no effect on OS (median OS, 24.3 vs. 24.6 months; hazard ratio [HR], 1.021; P = .810). For the 179 patients (24.2%) with a RSP tumor, OS was improved with the addition of SIRT (median, 22.0 vs. 17.1 months HR, 0.641; P = .008). The addition of SIRT was not associated with a significant difference in OS among the 540 patients with a LSP tumor (median, 24.6 vs. 26.6 months; HR, 1.120; P = .264). A test of treatment interaction by primary tumor side was statistically significant for RSP and SIRT (P = .002). Conclusion: The addition of SIRT for patients with RSP tumors, but not for those with LSP tumors, was associated with a statistically and clinically significant OS gain. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. Significant amounts of information are rapidly increasing in bulk as a consequence of the rapid development of unconventional tight reservoirs. The geomechanical and petrophysical characteristics of the wellbore rocks influence the sweet and non-sweet areas of tight unconventional reservoirs. Using standard approaches, such as data from cores and commercial software, it is difficult and costly to locate productive zones. Furthermore, it is difficult to apply these techniques to wells that do not have cores. This study presents a less costly way for the systematic and objective detection of productive and non-productive zones via well-log data using clustering unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms. The method of cluster analysis has been used in order to classify the productive and non-productive reservoir rock groups in the tight reservoir. This was accomplished by assessing the variability of the reservoir characteristics data that are forecasted by looking at the dimensions of the well logs. The Support vector machine as a supervised machine learning algorithm is then used to evaluate the classification accuracy of the unsupervised algorithms based on the clustering labels. The application made use of approximately ten different variables of rock characteristics including zonal depth, effective porosity, permeability, shale volume, water saturation, total organic carbon, young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, brittleness index, and pore size. The findings show that both clustering techniques identified the sweet areas with high accuracy and were less time-consuming.

To provide a systematic analysis of genes that regulate epithelial cell migration, we performed a high throughput wound healing screen with MCF-10A breast epithelial cells, using siRNAs targeting 1,081 human genes encoding phosphatases, kinases and proteins predicted to influence cell migration and adhesion. The primary screen identified three categories of hits: those that accelerate, those that inhibit and those that impair migration with associated effects on cell proliferation or metabolism. Extensive validation of all the hits yielded 66 high confidence genes that, when downregulated, either accelerated or impaired migration; 42 of these high confidence genes have not been previously associated with motility or adhesion. Time-lapse video microscopy revealed a broad spectrum of phenotypic changes involving alterations in the extent and nature of disruption of cell-cell adhesion, directionality of motility, cell polarity and shape, and protrusion dynamics. Informatics analysis highlighted three major signalling nodes, beta-catenin, beta1-integrin and actin, and a large proportion of the genes that accelerated migration impaired cell-cell adhesion.

6. The Local/Global Politics of Boston’s Viet-Vote

- Abstract
This article recalls the incident in 1992 where City Councilor Albert ‘Dapper’ O’Neil of Boston made a racist remark towards the Vietnamese community. The incident points out the lack of political clout and education Vietnamese people have due to their poverty and refugee status. If we want to make a difference in the political processes we need to exercise our right to vote. Community-based organizations, Viet-Aid, have also helped Vietnamese population to overcome barriers in their ability to participate in political actions. The 2003 Viet-Vote Campaign goals are to empower the Vietnamese community through civic engagement. The Viet-Vote influence extends that of local politics as it also attempts to represent Vietnamese voice, power, and spotlight on different issues from jobs to bilingual education. The Viet-Vote campaign help increase voter participation in the fall of 2003. The impact of Boston’s Viet-Vote campaign is far-ranging and multifaceted as it help launch the Vietnamese American Community Center and the establishment of community development projects.

Unconventional reservoirs are the productive zones in other words the rock quality and the mechanical properties of the rocks this process is devastating if humans or people try to search for the best reservoirs. So we can use machine learning (ML) algorithms to help us find and search easily and fast for the best reservoirs with less human interaction as possible. The objectives of this paper is to use machine learning (ML) techniques to predict and classify the reservoirs based on the properties of each reservoirs and choose the best reservoir. In this paper we have made a comparison between the different types of machine learning algorithm and described how we get the best and worst result for each one, the comparison we made gave us that the AdaBoost algorithm gave the worst performance measured in the accuracy while the random forest (RF) algorithm gave the best performance, this paper aim to make improvement of the process of searching for productive zones using ML algorithms.

As of October 1, 2007, 25 North American medical institutions and one European islet transplant center reported detailed information to the Registry on 315 allograft recipients, of which 285 were islet alone (IA) and 30 were islet after kidney (IAK). Of the 114 IA recipients expected at 4 years after their last infusion, 12% were insulin independent, 16% were insulin dependent with detectable C-peptide, 40% had no detectable C-peptide, and 32% had missing C-peptide data or were lost to follow-up. Of the IA recipients, 72% achieved insulin independence at least once over 3 years and multiple infusions. Factors associated with achievement of insulin independence included islet size >1.0 expressed as IEQs per islet number [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.5, p = 0.06], additional infusions given (HR = 1.5, p = 0.01), lower pretransplant HbA1c (HR = 1.2 each %-age unit, p = 0.02), donor given insulin (HR = 2, p = 0.003), daclizumab given at any infusion (HR = 1.9, p = 0.06), and shorter cold storage time (HR = 1.04, p = 0.03), mutually adjusted in a multivariate model. Severe hypoglycemia prevalence was reduced from 78–83% preinfusion to less than 5% throughout the first year post-last infusion, and to 18% adjusted for missing data at 3 years post-last infusion. In Year 1 post-first infusion for IA recipients, 53% experienced a Grade 3–5 or serious adverse event (AE) and 35% experienced a severe AE related to either an infusion procedure or immunosuppression. In Year 1 post-first infusion, 33% of IA subjects and 35% of IAK subjects had an AE related to the infusion procedure, while 35% of IA subjects and only 27% of IAK subjects had an AE related to the immunosuppression therapy. Five deaths were reported, of which two were classified as probably related to the infusion procedure or immunosuppression, and 10 cases of neoplasm, of which two were classified as probably related to the procedure or immunosuppression. Islet transplantation continues to show short-term benefits of insulin independence, normal or near normal HbA1c levels, and sustained marked decrease in hypoglycemic episodes.

Since the development bloom in unconventional reservoirs in North America, total organic carbon (TOC) has become a more essential parameter, as the indicator of the efficiency of these reservoirs. In this paper, by using conventional well logs and NMR log data, the TOC content of an unconventional reservoir in West Africa is estimated. Passy’s, Issler’s, and Schmoker’s methods were used as indirect wireline methods to estimate TOC content, along the well paths. Afterward, NMR log data, as a direct method, was used to provide more precise calculations of TOC. Both methods showed almost similar trends, with the NMR method indicating lower values for the TOC. Then, an adjusted Schmoker equation was proposed, which showed the best fit between NMR and conventional well logs results. By using the equation, the TOC content was calculated in three other wells, where NMR data were unavailable. The results were then used to prepare a 3D model of the TOC distribution, within the reservoir.

This paper analyzes historical software development costs and schedules from military and NASA satellite systems. Cost-and time-estimating relationships were developed for ground segment and embedded flight software. In addition to the traditional size variable, other cost drivers were found: software residence (ground or flight), and software type (application and support). Schedule driving variables included size, staffing level, and residence. The equations developed from the study can be used to estimate future space system software development costs or to cross-check estimates generated by other methods.
