Background: Malaria remains a serious public health concern worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, and the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in children especially among those aged under five in developing countries. Malaria can be fatal if not promptly and accurately diagnosed, especially in children.This study was carried out to determine the level of malaria infection and its associated risk factors among febrile children.Methods: Blood samples were collected and analyzed from two- hundred (200) systematically selected febrile children aged 1-10 years old. assay of samples collected were carried out using standard methods.data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire. Results: Results obtained from study subjects shows that, of the eighty-seven (87) infected subjects, 34 (39.1%) were aged 1-5 years, while 52 (59.8%) were within the range of 6 years and above.severity of infection showed 48 (55.2%) with scanty parasitic infection while 25 (28.7%) showed moderate infection, and 13 (14.9%) showed heavy infection.The association of age and level of parasitemia showed that 34 (58.8% ) subjects below 5 years, recorded scanty malaria compared to 14.7% with severe malaria within the age range.Considering gender, of the 33 infected female subjects, 45.5% had scanty malaria, 36.4% showed moderate malaria, while 18.2% had severe malaria, compared to the males subjects.Conclusion: This study reveals the prevalence of malaria infection with some level of severity among children at our study location.The need for prompt diagnosis and improved access to all malaria interventions becomes relevant,with a special focus on the high risk group.

Background: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a worldwide health issue and a source of major concern around the globe. Infections caused by hepatitis B virus pose a major challenge to public health. This study evaluates the prevalence and transmission rate of Hepatitis B Virus infection among children of primary school age at our study location. Method: Three hundred and three (303) volunteer subjects were screened.Structured questionnaire were administered to consenting participants to determine demographic and other risk factors for HBV infection.Samples obtained were analysed using a Laboratory-based immunoassay-HBsAg rapid diagnostic test (RDTs) in lateral flow assays formats. Sera samples obtained were stored at -20oc prior use. Results: Overall result showed that 46 (15.2%) were sero-positive for HBV infection. Considering age factor, Children aged 10 – 12 years showed a higher prevalence of 16(5.3%) [P-value 0.736; (P >0.05)]. Based on gender of subjects screened, a prevalence of 34(11.2%) was recorded among the males subjects compared to females with 12(4.0%) positivity, [(P < 0.05)]. Risk factors on family history recorded 13(4.3%) positivity, considering place of circumcision as risk factors among male subjects; result showed that subjects circumcised using traditional methods recorded 17 (11.7%) positivity. [P-value 0.856 (P>0.05)].Respondents with history of cuts recorded a prevalence of 29(9.6%) positivity; [P-Value 0.362 (P>0.05)] considering enzyme assay of positive subjects, 13 (4.3%) subjects recorded an elevated Alanine transaminases. Conclusion: The transmission rate of HBV infection among the family members was found to be high in this study. This upsurge calls for an urgent vaccination of the population by relevant healthcare providers.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a global challenge mostly in developing countries. Hepatitis B virus has infected almost one third of the world population. Pregnant women infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) can transmit the infection to their fetuses and newborns. As a result of the developing status of most of our communities screening of antenatal attendees is rarely done as a routine in most health facilities that offers antenatal services, hence the need for this studies at our location of study. Methods: One hundred and ninety (190) serum samples were screened among pregnant women on ante-natal care, using standard ELISA method. A well-structured questionnaire was administered to individuals to determine incidence rates and identify relative risk factors that predispose subjects to the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection. Results: From the total samples screened, Sixty-three, 63 (33.2%) were found to be positive for Hepatitis B virus. The highest prevalence was found among those aged 21-30 with overall number of 37(19.5%) Positivity, X2 =1.508; P=0.471. Considering educational status of subjects screened, high prevalence was recorded among those without formal education with 25(13.2%) Prevalence, x2= 5.381; P = 0.146 considering the various risk factors, subjects with history of tattooing/tribal markings recorded 41(21.6%), while women in their second trimester of pregnancy had a higher prevalence of 42(22.2%). Conclusions: This study recorded a high prevalence of Hepatitis B virus infection amongst pregnant women at our study location, which also reflects high probable risks of HBV perinatal transmission. It is therefore strongly recommended that pregnant women be routinely screened for Hepatitis B virus infection as part of antenatal care services.

Hepatitis B (HBV) infection is an important public health concern all over the globe. As a result of its asymptomatic nature, its prevalence among apparently healthy individuals becomes relevant for studies. Hence the prevalence survey of hepatitis B virus was conducted among apparently healthy young individuals. A total of two hundred samples were screened from volunteer subjects for Hepatitis B surface Antigen (HBsAg), using the one step immune-chromatographic test strip manufactured by Dia Spot® Diagnostics. Questionnaires were administered to obtain relevant information and demographic data. Overall result showed that 11 (5.5%) of the subjects tested were found to be positive. The highest prevalence was found among subjects aged 22-26 years with 7.8% prevalence compared to those aged 12-21 years with 4.4% prevalence (P=0.1012); (p˃0.05). Based on demographic factors, female workers tend to demonstrate high positivity of 12.5% compared to male with 10.0% prevalence, (P=0.4929); (p˃0.05). Subjects involved with risky behavioral pattern by the use of unsterilized objects recorded a high prevalence of 5.3%, (P=0.5748); (p˃0.05) among female subjects. Serum Alanine amino-tranferases result showed no significant difference among the positive subjects. The results showed some measure of prevalence among the study population. It therefore becomes pertinent that the community be enlightened on the possible risk of infection by the virus. Efforts should be made to ensure vaccination against this infectious agent is intensified.

Despite the intervention of WHO on vaccination for reducing the spread of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), there are records of the high prevalence of HBV in some regions. In this paper, a mathematical model was formulated to analyze the acquisition and transmission process of the virus with the view of identifying the possible way of reducing the menace and mitigating the risk of the virus. The models' positivity and boundedness were demonstrated using well-known theorems. Equating the differential equations to zero demonstrates the equilibria of the solutions i.e., the disease-free and endemic equilibrium. The next Generation Matrix method was used to compute the basic reproduction number for the models. Local and global stabilities of the models were shown via linearization and Lyapunov function methods respectively. The importance of testing and treatment on the dynamics of HBV were fully discussed in this paper. It was discovered that testing at the acute stage of the virus and chronic unaware state helps in better management of the virus.

The nutrients requirement for Cucurbita pepo L. (summer squash) for optimal yield and quality fruits production can be achieved through adequate nutrient supply. A field experiment was carried out during the cropping season of 2015 and 2016 at Landmark University Teaching and Research Farm, Omu-Aran, Nigeria to investigate the impact of Tithonia diversifolia, poultry manure and NPK fertilizer on the growth, yield, mineral and vitamin C content in the fruit of C. pepo. The experiment consisted of T. diversifolia at 30 tons ha−1, poultry manure at 10 tons ha−1, T. diversifolia at 30 tons ha−1 + Poultry manure 10 tons ha−1, T. diversifolia at 30 tons ha−1 + NPK (20:10:10), NPK (20:10:10) and control (no amendment of any kind) arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The growth and fruit yield of C. pepo using the mean of the two years was increased by 68% and 2% respectively by T. diversifolia + poultry manure as compared to control due to an increase in nutrient availability in the soil with the amendment used. Also, Vitamin C content and Mg value of the fruit was increased by application of T. diversifolia as soil amendments as compared to the control. While the application of NPK fertilizer alone significantly increased the Ca, Mn and Fe contents of fruits. Fruit content of K was increased by 39 % by the application of T. diversifolia + NPK. Therefore, for the purpose of growing squash for the quality of fruits (vitamin C), the use of T. diversifolia at 30 tons ha−1 as organic fertilizer is sufficient for the cultivation, while for growing the crop with interest in quantity, application of T. diversifolia at 30 tons ha−1 + poultry manure at 10 tons ha−1 is recommended.

Background Hepatitis B infection is a public health concern globally. HBV can be associated with type II diabetes mellitus, as HBV outbreaks have been observed among diabetics in healthcare facilities. This study evaluates the prevalence of HBV infection among patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Method A total of one hundred and eighty (180) diabetic patients and one‐hundred non‐diabetics (Controls) were recruited for this study. Structured questionnaires were administered to the consented participants to obtain relevant data. Sera samples obtained were screened using the HBsAg ELISA kit; CTK Biotech, Inc, while the 5 panel kit—rapid diagnostic test, was used to assay for serological markers. Questionnaires were used to obtain relevant information and demographic data. Result Overall prevalence of HBV infection among diabetes patients was 13.3%. Breakdown showed 9 (5.0%) seropositivity was obtained among male subjects compared to 15(8.3%) recorded among the females, P = .834; P .05. Educational status of participants showed 22 (12.2%) positivity among subjects with tertiary level of education P = .032; P .05). Result among non‐diabetics (Control) subjects showed (4%) seropositivity among the male subjects compared to (5.0%) seropositivity recorded among the female subjects (P = .739; P > .05). Conclusion There is an indication of higher risk of HBV infection among type 2 diabetic patients when compared to non‐diabetics. There is the need for more research on this area of study, to further validate the association between HBV infection and Diabetes Mellitus., Overall prevalence of HBV infection among diabetes patients was 13.3%. Breakdown showed 9 (5.0%) seropositivity was obtained among male subjects compared to 15 (8.3%) recorded among the females. Subjects aged 41‐50 years recorded a higher positivity of 7 (3.9%). Risk factors considered showed that 5(2.8%) of the seropositive subjects were alcoholic consumers. There is an indication of higher risk of HBV infection among type 2 diabetic patients when compared to non‐diabetics. General surveillance through routine screening of diabetics in endemic regions with HBV infection is highly advocated to identify those with the hepatitis B infection. Establishing appropriate measures to manage the infection such as vaccination and public health enlightenment to the populace on the scourge of this infectious agent is strongly advocated. Improved diagnosis for early detection of HBV infection among diabetic patients to reduce further complications is strongly recommended. There is the need for more research to further validate the association between HBV infection and diabetes mellitus.

Enteric fever is an invasive bacterial infection mostly caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, which is a common agent of enteric fever. This illness has been a major public health issue, as it affects a large number of individuals globally. The box-plot analytic method is involved in exploratory data analysis using statistical techniques to identify patterns that may be hidden in a group of numbers used to visually summarize and compare groups of data. We evaluted the effect of enteric fever on various haematologic parameters using the box-plot distribution model. Samples were obtained from 400 volunteer patients as well as healthy subjects (controls). Assay for typhoid fever was carried out using obtained serum samples to detect specific O and H antigens. Antibody titres of 1:80 and higher for anti-TO and 1:160 and higher for anti-TH antibodies were taken as cutoff values to indicate recent infection of typhoid fever. The haematologic parameters were evaluated using an automated haematology analyser. A statistically significant decrease was observed in packed cell volume, white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and haemoglobin concentration, while a statistically insignificant difference was observed in the neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes seen in the box-plot distribution analysis. Typhoid fever causes significant haematologic changes which could be helpful in diagnosis. The box-and-whisker plots compared the distributions of the haematologic parameters, spread and overall ranges. Awareness of these parameters could be useful in providing accurate diagnosis and therapy, particularly in underresourced endemic regions in developing countries.

Electrolyte imbalance and mineral disturbances are majorly identified clinical symptoms in various infectious diseases including malaria. Malaria infection has also been shown to be associated with abnormalities in fluids, electrolytes and acid base balances which are capable of enhancing disease severity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of malaria infection on electrolytes parameters. Methods: Finger prick blood samples were collected from Two-Hundred (200) malaria-suspected subjects representing all age groups and gender. The Giemsa-stained blood smears were carefully examined according to standard procedure. Demographic information was obtained using structured questionnaires. Results: Pearson's Correlation Coefficient technique was used to investigate the relationship, and the strength of association between the variables. The mean bound of patients’ sodium level was observed to fall within the specified normal limits of 125mmol/L – 145mmol/L; except for positive malaria patients belonging to the MP-(++) which will fall below the 125mmol/L (i.e. 126.25mmol/L – 1.77mmol/L = 124.48mmol/L). Conclusion: In our study we found that Plasmodium falciparum showed more alteration in electrolytes parameters than Plasmodium vivax. This study discovered a significant linear relationship based on the Pearson product-moment correlation between creatinine and urea, potassium and chloride, potassium and creatinine, potassium and urea. The mean sodium and chloride level of positive malaria [MP-(++)] patients were observed to fall outside the normal limit.

Background Typhoid or enteric fever is caused by Salmonella typhi. It is largely a disease of developing nations due to poor standard of hygiene and unavailability of potable water. The most prominent feature of the infection is fever which gradually rises to a high plateau. The prevalence of typhoid fever has been on the increase which is associated with several hematological parameters. Objectives This study was carried out to determine the changes in various hematological parameters in our study subjects. Method Four Hundred- (400) samples were obtained from volunteer subjects visiting the outpatient department of the Landmark University Medical Center. 200 typhoid positive samples were collected from subjects while 200 typhoid negative blood samples served as controls (From both male and female subjects each). Widal test was carried out as a confirmatory test for typhoid fever and evaluation of the hematological parameters were performed. The hematological parameters considered includes Packed Cell Volume (PCV), White Blood Cell count (WBC), Platelet count (PLT), Lymphocyte (LYMP) their implications on both male and female typhoid fever patients were also determined. Results The result showed a significant reduction in the values for PCV, WBC, ESR and HAE concentration in typhoid positive males in comparison to typhoid negative males. In females, a significant decrease was observed in values for PCV, ESR, HAE concentration and PLT in typhoid positive females when compared to typhoid negative females. These parameters when compared showed a significant decrease recorded in PCV, ESR and HAE concentration of the typhoid positive male patients in comparison to typhoid positive female patients. Conclusion This study implies that anemia, bone marrow suppression and hemaphagocytosis are likely resulting factors of typhoid fever due to the changes in the hematological parameters. This paper considers the impact of an acute individual's spontaneous clearance, recovery of a chronic individual with full immunity, and risk factor reduction on a hepatitis B virus (HBV) model. The existence and the positivity solution of the model are established. The model threshold quantity is defined and sensitivity analysis is analyzed to demonstrate the effect of various parameters on the spread of the virus. The global stability analysis of the equilibrium is shown using Lyapunov and comparison theorem methods. Finally, computational simulation is presented to validate the analytical solution. The results show that treatment, spontaneous clearance and reduction of the risk factor are highly successful in transmitting and regulating HBV transmission. The effective measure of these parameters as substantiated by our simulations, providing an excellent control method of the transmissible infection of HBV.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a serious global public health problem and responsible for most common liver infection worldwide. The infection if contracted early in life, may lead to chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The aim of this study was to determine Hepatitis B Surface Antigenemia (HBsAg) and risk factors of transmission among apparently healthy asymptomatic individual volunteers in Jos metropolis. In order to estimate and further evaluate prevalence rate of HBsAg in our population of study, a well-structured questionnaire was used to obtain the social and demographic information of consenting participants, while ethical approval was sought and obtained. Two hundred (200) volunteer subjects were enrolled for the study, three milliliter (3ml) of venous blood samples were collected aseptically by venipuncture.Sera obtained were assayed for the HBsAg using the HBsAg test strip (Acon Laboratory incorporated USA).Confirmatory tests were performed for Serum HBsAg by using a third generation enzyme linked Immunosorbent assay (HBsAg ELISA)-(Bio-Rad Laboratories, Incorporated California, USA). Overall results showed a prevalence of 45(22.5%) positivity among subjects screened. considering gender 25 (12.5%) were males while 20 (10.0%) were females,(p = 0.020),Age distribution showed that subjects aged 25-29 years recorded a prevalence of 10(12.5%);(p = 0.001), this is relatively high in view of the fact that the study subjects were a apparently healthy population. Clinical risk factors showed that 2.5% of sero-positive subject had a history of blood transfusion(p = 0.480),while4.5% had a record of previous STD infection (p = 0.423).Serological markers among the apparently healthy individuals screened showed; 40 (20.0%), 29 (14.5%), 8 (4.0%), 20 (10.0%) and 38 (19.0%) for HBsAg, Anti HBs, HBeAg, Anti HBe and Anti HBc respectively (P< 0.005).Changes in liver enzymes among subjects that tested positive for the HBV showed that. the apparently healthy individuals recorded an abnormality of 13(28.9%) respectively, [P= 0.0144;( P

Epidemiologic studies have established a relationship between pediatric patients and typhoid fever infection. This study was carried out to ascertain if specific hematological measurements of the pediatric patients discriminate between their positive and negative status to typhoid infection and to produce a rule for classifying other pediatric patients. Discriminant analysis was applied to predict the probability of a specific categorical outcome based on several explanatory variables (predictors). This study analyzed the differentiation between two hundred pediatric patients attending Landmark University Medical Centre based on their typhoid fever status. The hematological parameters considered were Packed Cell Volume, White Blood Cell count; Neutrophil, Erythrocyte level, Hemoglobin and Platelet count, Assay of samples were performed using standard procedures. Fisher's Linear Discriminant Method was used for classification of variables in this study. With the use of the Fisher's Linear Discrimination method for classification of the obtained data, a minimum value of -0.0067 was obtained implying that any new pediatric patient with a discriminant score above -0.0067 would be diagnosed to be typhoid negative; otherwise, they would be classified as typhoid positive pediatric patients. The efficiency of this method of classification was tested using two approaches; Retribution estimate approach and leaving-one out approach which showed a prevalence rate of typhoid positive patients at 75.8% and 74.7% respectively. This data analysis hypotheses that typhoid fever is highly endemic amongst our study subjects. A point-of-care diagnosis with a strong positive predictive value, which improves pediatric enteric fever diagnosis, is strongly advocated.

Co-infection with human immunodeficiency Virus HIV and (HCV) is becoming a major global problem, leading to increased morbidity and mortality in both developed and developing countries. This research hence examines the risk factors and transmission of HIV and HCV co-infection. Two hundred and ninety (290) subjects were screened, with HCV global immunochromatographic test kit. Possible risk factors to co-infectious status of subject were determined using a well-structured questionnaire. Out of the 290 sera tested, 25 (8.6%) were positive for HCV antibodies. Considering Age of subjects screened, females aged 11-20 years recorded a high positivity of 3.1 %,( X 2 = 2.755, P-value = 0.839; P>0.05).Marital status of subjects showed that single subjects recorded 13(4.5%), (X 2 = 0.679,P-value = 0.712 ; P > 0.05)positivity compared to married subjects with 4.1%. There were no significant correlations between HCV infection with Age and Marital Status; P - values = 0.839 and 0.712 respectively (i.e P > 0.05). Significant correlation was found between HCV antibodies and educational status, (Value x 2 = 7.957,P-value = 0.047; P < 0.05).However, Volunteers with secondary school level of education recorded 10(3.4%) positivity. The result obtained showed that Seroprevalence to HCV antibodies in this study was high, hence the need for its early diagnosis among HIV patients is strongly advocated to reduce the risk of further complications among these subjects.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) continues to cause serious health problems in developing countries. Neonatal infection with HBV, which is often acquired during delivery, carries a high risk resulting in persistent infection. This research aims to detect the prevalence of Hepatitis B surface Antigen (HBsAg) among pregnant women in our location of study. One hundred and eighty (180) sera samples were screened among pregnant women aged 13-49, using standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Structured questionnaire were administered to the subjects to obtain demographic and other relevant data. Overall result showed that 31 (17.2%) were found to be positive for HBsAg among the total subjects screened. The highest prevalence was found among those aged 20-29 with 11 (6.1%) seropositivity (x2=7.902; P=0.048). Considering occupational distribution of volunteer subjects, a high prevalence of 12 (6.7%); P0.05). Globally, Hepatitis B Virus has been identified as one of the most common infectious diseases and a major public health problem.This study was therefore carried out to assess the prevalence of Hepatitis B virus infection among primary school children attending LGE primary school, Sabon Pegi, Kuru, Nigeria. Three hundred and sixty (360) blood samples were collected from the pupils and sera separated and analyzed for HBsAg using one step Hepatitis B surface antigen test strip. Of the 360 samples screened, 35 (9.7%) were sero-positive. Pupils within the age 7-9 years had the highest prevalence of 3.9%. Male subjects recorded a prevalence of 6.1% compared to 3.6% for females. Risk factors such as blood transfusion recorded 1.6%. Furthermore, family history of HBV infection accounted for 3.6%, while male subjects that had traditional method of circumcision recorded a high prevalence of 3.3%. Unfortunately, the prevalence of this ravaging infectious agent appears to be high amongst the subjects studied. It is strongly suggested that public awareness be accorded urgent attention while socioeconomic development in these areas be given priority as a measure to preventing further spread of this virus amongst children, particularly the school age group. Poultry diseases are one of the main factors constraining poultry practice in most developing countries. Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious and commonly fatal viral poultry disease caused by Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Detection of antibodies to Newcastle disease virus in 300 blood samples from local chickens slaughtered at Muda Lawal Market Bauchi was carried out using the haemagglutination inhibition test (HI). This was to determine the immune status of local birds to NDV in Bauchi Metropolis. 169 (56.3%) birds tested positive with antibody titre ranging from 2 to 512. The geometric mean titre was 19.7. This low antibody titre reveals the epizootic nature of the virus in the study area and is suggestive of an inter-epidemic phase or early phase of infection pointing a finger to possible economic losses in the event of an outbreak, alongside the role of local chickens in the transmission cycle of NDV to other avian species. Aqueous (cold and hot) and methanolic extracts of the leaves of Guiera senegalensis were made and their efficacy studied in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes . The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bacteriocidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts was determined using standard methods. Results obtained showed that all extracts inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli at all concentrations, while Streptococcus pyogenes was only inhibited at 250 and 200 mg/ml concentration on some of the extracts. The MICs of the different extracts ranges from 40 to 200 mg/ml, while the MBC gave a range of 20 to 200 mg/ml but varies from one isolate to the other. Phytochemical screening of the powdered form of the leaves of Guiera Senegalensis showed it to contain resins, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, glycosides and terpenes. The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may have a much greater effect on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes than previously reported, indicating that routine HCV screening in pregnant women may need to be reconsidered. Two hundred (200) serum samples from pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri north-eastern Nigeria were screened for HCV antibodies using the HCV rapid immunoassay test strip which detects antibodies to HCV in the serum or plasma. A structured questionnaire was administered to obtain the risk factors in the population that were associated with the virus infection. Of the total samples analysed, 12(6%) were positive for Hepatitis C virus antibodies. The highest prevalence was found among the age groups 20-29 with an overall number of 6(3.0%) being positive for the HCV. Considering occupational exposure, higher seroprevalence was recorded among the civil servants, with 9(4.5%) being positive. Seroprevalence of maternal Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were determined among pregnant women attending the ante-natal clinic at Aboh General Hospital, Aboh, Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. Samples were assayed for HBsAg using one step Hepatitis B Surface Antigen test strip. Information on gestational age of the expectant mothers, gravidity, demographic and other possible risk factors, were obtained using a standard questionnaire. A total of three hundred and fifty one (351) serum samples were screened. Three hundred and two samples (302) were from pregnant women who served as test subjects, while forty nine (49) samples were from non pregnant women, which were obtained as control. Overall result showed that 62(20.53%) of the pregnant women screened were positive, while 9(18.37%) of control subjects also showed positivity for the viral surface antigen. Highest numbers of positive samples were observed among women that are multigravidae, (50(16.6%) prevalence was recorded), while 34(11.2%) was amongst the primigravidae. Similarly, the highest prevalent rate was obtained from women in their second trimester of pregnancy out of which 38(12.6%) were seropositive, while the least came from women at their first trimester of pregnancy (3.6%). Comparing the various demographic data obtained, 51(16.9%) housewives recorded the highest prevalent rate, while students subject screened, recorded the lowest prevalence of (1.3%). From the above result, neonatal transmission is a possibility to be considered especially from chronic carrier mothers and others with acute Hepatitis B. As a consequence, it is advocated that pregnant women be tested for HBsAg during an early prenatal visit. This suggests also that they should be tested when admitted for delivery. Protection of village chickens against Newcastle disease (ND) is considered feasible through food-delivered vaccines. Vaccine virus strain V4-UPM coated on cassava granules with or without additive (2% gelatin) was tested for stability at room temperature (RT) for 8 weeks and 40oC for 12 hours at weekly and two hourly intervals respectively. Stability was assessed by estimation of residual infectivity and infective virus excretion using standard methods. Results showed that at RT, the titre (EID50/gm) of the food vaccine with additive did not drop below the minimum effective immunogenic titre (MEIT) of 106.0 until after 4 weeks, whereas the one without additive dropped below MEIT value at the 3rd week of exposure. Following exposure at 40oC, the one with additive lost MEIT value after the 10th hour, while the infectivity of food vaccine without additive dropped below MEIT value after the 6th hour of exposure. Only four chickens produced HI antibody at first, whereas all 10 sero-converted on booster dose of vaccine, all 5 vaccinated and challenged birds resisted challenge, while all the unvaccinated control birds died. The vaccine virus was efficiently excreted by all birds that ate the food vaccine. It is hereby concluded that cassava granules sustained virus infectivity fairly enough for effective village chicken vaccination in any part of Nigeria.

Background : Cervical cancer is a preventable and the most common female genital tract cancer despite the availability of screening services for precancerous lesions of the cervix. This study aims to determine the prevalence of cervical dysplasia in women of reproductive age in Zaria. Methodology: A prospective study of 131 women of child bearing age attending the family planning and Gynaecology clinics in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria - Nigeria were recruited for the study after obtaining their consent. Cervical samples were collected and subjected to pap staining and cytological examination by a pathologist and classified using the Bethesda System. The data were processed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Bivariate analysis was done and the level of significance was set at a P Results: Cervical dysplasia prevalence of 7.0% was found out of which High Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (HSIL) was 2.3% (n = 3), Low Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL) was 3.1% (n = 4) and Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US) was 1.6% (n = 2). There were 13% (n = 17) inflammatory features. Normal cytological features for Pap smear testing was present in 77.1% (n = 101). Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of routine screening and early treatment of cervical dysplasia in order to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with cervical cancer.

Following the widespread use of Poliovirus Vaccine in the mid-1950s, the incidence of poliomyelitis declined rapidly in many industrialized countries. While now rare in the western world, Polio is still endemic to South Asia and Nigeria. This is no doubt a burden to the Federal Government of Nigeria. This work studied the serological response of OPV trivalent formulation in order to observe the Seroconversion rate among the OPV recipients in Bida, Niger State North Central Nigeria using Neutrali- zation Method. Samples were collected from 200 children and young adults that have been immunized with Oral Poliovirus Vaccine in Bida community. Participants are within the 1 st day to 15 years of age. There was no significant statistical difference between poliovirus serotypes and sex (P > 0.05). It was observed that 60% of the 5 neonates (age less than 4 weeks) that parti- cipated in the study with zero dose or first dose has antibody titer level> 1:8 for more than two poliovirus serotypes, while 57.14 % of the 7 infants less than 10 weeks ( 1:8 for more than two poliovirus serotypes. The responsiveness against poliovirus vaccine varied much between children at different ages. It was observed that there were low mean titer values for the three serotypes in age group 5.1 -10years and 10.1 - 15years compared to age groups below5years. It was also discovered that some of the studied cases have no protective level of antibodies which represent a high risk factor if they are exposed to clinical doses of wild poliovirus with seronegativity rates for PV1=43.68%, PV2=45.37%, PV3=44.07%. Therefore, it is recommended that indigenous vaccine production, repeat vaccination among children below5 years and measurement of protective antibodies against poliovirus at different intervals to ascertain both the immune status of the vaccine recipients and the validity of the vaccine, be encouraged.

The suitability of V4 vaccine coated on cracked local grain (maize) and its husks and used for oral vaccination of chickens was assessed. Seventy-two (72) birds aged three (3) weeks and above were divided into six groups of twelve (12) birds per group. The birds were bled to determine their prevaccination HI antibody status while five different samples of cracked maize were coated with the V4 vaccine and fed to the chickens orally in each of the groups. All birds in the group including the controls were bled at 7, 14 and 21 days post vaccination to determine the presence and level of antibody response in each of the groups. Results obtained showed that prevaccination haemagglutination inhibition (HI) titre was less than two (log2) in 18% of the birds used in this experiment, however 14% of the birds had an HI titre of ≤ 4. The post vaccination antibody titre showed that birds vaccinated with vaccine coated maize gave a post vaccination HI antibody titre of between Log2(6-8). when the coated maize samples were soaked in water at room temperature and assessed after 24 hours, the treated maize parts gave >6.3 log10 EID50 and above while the untreated parts gave < 3.0 log10 EID50. The experiment showed that whole maize and husks, which were not treated, may contain agents which are virus inhibitory. Form this research the treated maize which was soaked and washed gave a higher geometric mean titre, hence tends to be good carriers of the virus (vaccine). It is therefore concluded from this work that processed cracked maize could be a good carrier of NDV4 vaccine. It is hereby recommended that only treated maize could be used as carrier for the V4 vaccine.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is an important public health problem worldwide. Its association with, and predisposing nature for diabetes mellitus (DM) has been long established. This research was carried out to determine the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) amongst people with possible genetic predisposition to diabetes mellitus living in and around Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria. 188 subjects were screened after they filled a structured questionnaire to determine some of their demographic data, social habits and possible risk factors. 5 ml of blood was collected from each subject and sera separated out. Biotech's third generation ELISA Kit for HCV antibodies was used for the screening. Liver enzyme analysis was carried out on positive samples to determine their disease status. A prevalence of 14.36% was recorded with the highest seropositive group being those in the age bracket of 18 – 37 years. 13(13.40%) of males and 14(15.38%) of females were sero-positive. Liver enzyme analysis of sero-positive subjects showed increased levels which may imply early onset of liver damage. These result showed that these individuals could later suffer diabetes which may be triggered by their HCV infection if not treated. This is not over-looking the economic significance of their ill health, assuming they progress to cirrhotic HCV or develop hepatocelluar carcinoma due to HCV chronicity.

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain V4-UPM was investigated for its viability when coated on different grains offal following exposure to room temperature (RT) (21-27°C) for 8 weeks and using residualinfectivity titration at weekly intervals in chick embryos as a measure of viability. The grains (maize, sorghum and millet) used for the study were processed to produce the offal which was dried in the sunbefore and at RT under a gentle air current after coating with virus. The time duration taken for the infectivity of the virus to drop below the minimum immunizing dose (MID) (log10 EID50/g≥ 6.0) wascompared for virus suspensions containing additive (2% gelatin) and without additive. Results showed that the virus coated onto the carrier foods offal without additive remained stable at MID value for 3weeks (millet), 3.5 weeks (sorghum) and 5 weeks (maize) and with additive for 5.2 weeks (sorghum), 5 weeks (millet) and 6 weeks (maize) at RT. Thus, V4-UPM was found in this study to be stable evenwithout additive for a minimum of 3 weeks on one of the grains offal, a reasonable time for the food vaccine to reach remote areas of most villages. It is concluded that the waste byproducts of any ofthese foods could be suitable as carriers for food-based vaccination of rural chickens in Nigeria.

Studies have shown that hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected alcoholics have more severe biochemical and histological evidence of liver disease than anti-HCV-negative patients. One possible mechanism for the increased liver damage is that alcohol may have a stimulatory effect on HCV replication. This study was therefore carried out to investigate the seroprevalence of HCV virus among alcoholics. Two-hundred and seventy (270) alcoholics and fifty (50) control subjects at selected locations in Jos South local government area (LGA), of Plateau State were screened for HCV antibodies using grand rapid diagnostic test strip. Structured questionnaire was employed to obtain demographic data of studysubjects. Overall, the prevalence of HCV infection was found to be 45(16.7%) in response to alcoholics while the non-alcoholic (control) subjects recorded 3 (6.0%) positivity, [(x2 = 3.765); P > 0.05]. Genderconsideration showed that females subjects had a higher prevalence of 25 (9.3%) compared to males with 20 (7.4%) among the alcoholic subjects. The 19 – 30 years age group recorded the highestseroprevalence of 14 (5.2%) to the HCV, [(x2 = 4.757); P > 0.05], while no significant difference was observed among positive subjects screened for serum aminotranferase levels in relation to age and gender. Available evidence from this study indicates that alcoholic consumption is a strong determinant of HCV infection. Drastic measures at creating awareness and the need for routine screening among alcoholics should be given due consideration. However, future HCV studies need toquantify concurrent alcoholic consumption to further our understanding of the total burden of illness from alcohol associated HCV in the community.Keywords: Alcoholics, hepatitis c virus, occurrence

Background Glucose intolerance is observed more in patients with HCV infection compared with control subjects with liver disease, Initial studies suggested that Hepatitis C virus infection may be an additional risk factor for the development of diabetes mellitus. This study was therefore carried out to determine the correlation of HCV infection and diabetes. Methods Three hundred (300) confirmed type 2 diabetic patients were screened for hepatitis C virus antibodies at the Plateau state specialist hospital, Jos, using Grand diagnostic test strip. Questionnaire comprising of age, sex, family history on diabetes, duration of disease and marital status were issued to subjects. Results Overall result showed that the prevalence rate of HCV infection was 33(11%). In response to diabetic status, females subjects had a higher prevalence of 178(59.3%) compared to males 122(40.7%). Those aged 47–57 recorded the highest seroprevalence 10(30.3%) to the Hepatitis C Virus, while Patients without family history of diabetes showed a higher seroprevalence of 13(39.4%). Subjects who never had any blood transfusion recorded a prevalence rate of 6(18.2%). Marital status showed no significant difference [(P = 0.275; P.0.05)]. Considering duration of developing diabetes, patients within the range of 1–10 years diabetic status recorded the highest prevalence rate 25(75.8%) compared to other ranges considered. Conclusion This study hence, suggests a relatively strong association between HCV infection and diabetes, this therefore call for an urgent approach strategy in the control and management of this disease of the endocrine system.
