The analysis of core-collapse supernova (CCSN) environments can provide important information on the life cycle of massive stars and constrain the progenitor properties of these powerful explosions. The MUSE instrument at the VLT enables detailed local environment constraints of the progenitors of large samples of CCSNe. Using a homogeneous SN sample from the ASAS-SN survey has enabled us to perform a minimally biased statistical analysis of CCSN environments. We analyze 111 galaxies observed by MUSE that hosted 112 CCSNe detected or discovered by the ASAS-SN survey between 2014 and 2018. The majority of the galaxies were observed by the the AMUSING survey. Here we analyze the immediate environment around the SN locations and compare the properties between the different CCSN types and their light curves. We used stellar population synthesis and spectral fitting techniques to derive physical parameters for all HII regions detected within each galaxy, including the star formation rate (SFR), H$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW), oxygen abundance, and extinction. We found that stripped-envelope (SE) SNe occur in environments with a higher median SFR, H$\alpha$ EW, and oxygen abundances than SNe II and SNe IIn/Ibn. The distributions of SNe II and IIn are very similar, indicating that these events explode in similar environments. For the SESNe, SNe Ic have higher median SFRs, H$\alpha$ EWs, and oxygen abundances than SNe Ib. SNe IIb have environments with similar SFRs and H$\alpha$ EWs to SNe Ib, and similar oxygen abundances to SNe Ic. We also show that the postmaximum decline rate, $s$, of SNe II correlates with the H$\alpha$ EW, and that the luminosity and the $\Delta m_{15}$ parameter of SESNe correlate with the oxygen abundance, H$\alpha$ EW, and SFR at their environments. The level of star formation in elliptical galaxies is poorly constrained, due to difficulties in quantifying the contamination of flux-based estimates of star formation from unrelated phenomena, such as AGN and old stellar populations. We here utilise core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) as unambiguous tracers of recent star formation in ellipticals within a cosmic volume. We firstly isolate a sample of 421 z < 0.2, r < 21.8 mag CCSNe from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey. We then introduce a Bayesian method of identifying ellipticals via their colours and morphologies in a manner unbiased by redshift and yet consistent with manual classification from Galaxy Zoo 1. We find ~ 25 % of z < 0.2 r < 20 mag galaxies in the Stripe 82 region are ellipticals (~ 28000 galaxies). In total, 36 CCSNe are found to reside in ellipticals. We demonstrate that such early-types contribute a non-negligible fraction of star formation to the present-day cosmic budget, at 11.2 $\pm$ 3.1 (stat) $^{+3.0}_{-4.2}$ (sys) %. Coupling this result with the galaxy stellar mass function of ellipticals, the mean specific star formation rate (SSFR; $\overline{S}$) of these systems is derived. The best-fit slope is given by log ($\overline{S}(M)$/yr) = - (0.80 $\pm$ 0.59) log ($M/10^{10.5}\rm{M}_{\odot}$) - 10.83 $\pm$ 0.18. The mean SSFR for all log ($M/\rm{M}_{\odot}$) > 10.0 ellipticals is found to be $\overline{S} = 9.2 \pm 2.4$ (stat) $^{+2.7}_{-2.3}$ (sys) $\times 10^{-12}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with recent estimates via SED-fitting, and is 11.8 $\pm$ 3.7 (stat) $^{+3.5}_{-2.9}$ (sys) % of the mean SSFR level on the main sequence as also derived from CCSNe. We find the median optical spectrum of elliptical CCSN hosts is statistically consistent with that of a control sample of ellipticals that do not host CCSNe, implying that these SN-derived results are well-representative of the total low-z elliptical population., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Using simulated galaxies in their cosmological context, we analyse how the flaring of mono-age populations (MAPs) influences the flaring and the age structure of geometrically-defined thick discs. We also explore under which circumstances the geometric thin and thick discs are meaningfully distinct components, or are part of a single continuous structure as in the Milky Way. We find that flat thick discs are created when MAPs barely flare or have low surface density at the radius where they start flaring. When looking at the vertical distribution of MAPs, these galaxies show a continuous thin/thick structure. They also have radial age gradients and tend to have quiescent merger histories. Those characteristics are consistent with what is observed in the Milky Way. Flared thick discs, on the other hand, are created when the MAPs that flare have a high surface density at the radius where they start flaring. The thick discs' scale-heights can either be dominated by multiple MAPs or just a few, depending on the mass and scale-height distribution of the MAPs. In a large fraction of these galaxies, thin and thick discs are clearly distinct structures. Finally, flared thick discs have diverse radial age gradients and merger histories, with galaxies that are more massive or that have undergone massive mergers showing flatter age radial gradients in their thick disc., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. The upgrade of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) of ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) will extend measurements of heavy-flavour hadrons and low-mass dileptons to a lower transverse momentum than currently achieved and increase the readout capabilities to incorporate the full interaction. Furthermore, the tracking efficiency will be improved at low transverse momentum. To achieve this, the new ALICE ITS is comprised of seven layers of a custom Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor design known as ALPIDE, with a spatial resolution of $5\,\mathrm{\mu m}$. The use of the ALPIDE-based detector design will reduce the material budget to $0.35\%\,\mathrm{X_0}$ per layer for the innermost three layers, and to $1.0\%\,\mathrm{X_0}$ per layer for the outermost four layers, compared to $1.14\%\,\mathrm{X_0}$ per layer in the previous ITS. The construction effort in numerous sites around the world has resulted in a fully assembled and connected detector, which is currently undergoing on surface commissioning before its installation in the ALICE cavern. Star formation is one of the key factors that shapes galaxies. This process is relatively well understood from both simulations and observations on a small "local" scale of individual giant molecular clouds and also on a "global" galaxy-wide scale (e.g. the Kennicutt-Schmidt law). However, there is still no understanding on how to connect global to local star formation scales and whether this connection is at all possible. Here we analyze spatially resolved kinematics and the star formation rate density $\Sigma_{SFR}$ for a combined sample of 17 nearby spiral galaxies obtained using our own optical observations in H$\alpha$ for 9 galaxies and neutral hydrogen radio observations combined with a multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution analysis for 8 galaxies from the THINGS project. We show that the azimuthally averaged normalized star formation rate density in spiral galaxies on a scale of a few hundred parsecs is proportional to the kinetic energy of giant molecular cloud collisions due to differential rotation of the galactic disc. This energy is calculated from the rotation curve using the two Oort parameters A and B as $\log (\Sigma_{SFR} / SFR_{tot}) \propto \log[2 A^2+ 5 B^2]$. The total kinetic energy of collision is defined by the shear velocity that is proportional to A and the rotational energy of a cloud proportional to the vorticity B. Hence, shear does not act as a stabilizing factor for the cloud collapse thus reducing star formation but rather increases it by boosting the kinetic energy of collisions. The discrepancy between estimates of the Hubble Constant ($H_0$) measured from local ($z \lesssim 0.1$) scales and from scales of the sound horizon is a crucial problem in modern cosmology. Peculiar velocities ($v_{pec}$) of standard candle distance indicators can systematically affect local $H_0$ measurements. We here use 2MRS galaxies to measure the local galaxy density field, finding a notable $z$ < 0.05 under-density in the SGC-6dFGS region of 27 $\pm$ 2 %. However, no strong evidence for a 'Local Void' pertaining to the full 2MRS sky coverage is found. Galaxy densities are used to measure a density parameter, $\Delta \phi_{+-}$, which we introduce as a proxy for $v_{pec}$ which quantifies density gradients along a SN line-of-sight. $\Delta \phi_{+-}$ is found to correlate with local $H_0$ estimates from 88 Pantheon SNeIa (0.02 < $z$ < 0.05). Density structures on scales of $\sim$ 50 Mpc are found to correlate strongest with $H_0$ estimates in both the observational data and in mock data from the MDPL2-Galacticus simulation. Using trends of $H_0$ with $\Delta \phi_{+-}$, we can correct for the effects of density structure on local $H_0$ estimates, even in the presence of biased $v_{pec}$. However, the difference in the inferred $H_0$ estimate with and without the peculiar velocity correction is limited to < 0.1 %. We conclude that accounting for environmentally-induced peculiar velocities of SNIa host galaxies does not resolve the tension between local and CMB-derived $H_0$ estimates., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. This paper proposes a novel simulator IoTSim-Edge, which captures the behavior of heterogeneous IoT and edge computing infrastructure and allows users to test their infrastructure and framework in an easy and configurable manner. IoTSim-Edge extends the capability of CloudSim to incorporate the different features of edge and IoT devices. The effectiveness of IoTSim-Edge is described using three test cases. The results show the varying capability of IoTSim-Edge in terms of application composition, battery-oriented modeling, heterogeneous protocols modeling and mobility modeling along with the resources provisioning for IoT applications.

In Sedgwick et al. (2019) we introduced and utilised a method to combat surface brightness and mass biases in galaxy sample selection, using core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) as pointers towards their host galaxies, in order to: (i) search for low-surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs); (ii) assess the contributions of galaxies at a given mass to the star-formation-rate density (SFRD); and (iii) infer from this, using estimates of specific star-formation (SF) rate, the form of the SF-galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF). A CCSN-selection of SF-galaxies allows a probe of the form of the SFRD and GSMF deep into the dwarf galaxy mass regime. In the present work, we give improved constraints on our estimates of the SFRD and star-forming GSMF, in light of improved photometric redshift estimates required for estimates of galaxy stellar mass. The results are consistent with a power-law increase to SF-galaxy number density down to our low stellar mass limit of $\sim 10^{6.2}$ M$_{\odot}$. No deviation from the high-mass version of the surface brightness - mass relation is found in the dwarf mass regime. These findings imply no truncation to galaxy formation processes at least down to $\sim 10^{6.2}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. Background: Photo-realistic terapixel visualization is computationally intensive and to date there have been no such visualizations of urban digital twins, the few terapixel visualizations that exist have looked towards space rather than earth. Objective: our aims are: creating a scalable cloud supercomputer software architecture for visualization; a photo-realistic terapixel 3D visualization of urban IoT data supporting daily updates; a rigorous evaluation of cloud supercomputing for our application. Method: we migrated the Blender Cycles path tracer to the public cloud within a new software framework designed to scale to petaFLOP performance. Results: we demonstrate we can compute a terapixel visualization in under one hour, the system scaling at 98% efficiency to use 1024 public cloud GPU nodes delivering 14 petaFLOPS. The resulting terapixel image supports interactive browsing of the city and its data at a wide range of sensing scales. Conclusion: The GPU compute resource available in the cloud is greater than anything available on our national supercomputers providing access to globally competitive resources. The direct financial cost of access, compared to procuring and running these systems, was low. The indirect cost, in overcoming teething issues with cloud software development, should reduce significantly over time., Comment: 12 pages

We introduce a method for producing a galaxy sample unbiased by surface brightness and stellar mass, by selecting star-forming galaxies via the positions of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Whilst matching $\sim$2400 supernovae from the SDSS-II Supernova Survey to their host galaxies using IAC Stripe 82 legacy coadded imaging, we find $\sim$150 previously unidentified low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). Using a sub-sample of $\sim$900 CCSNe, we infer CCSN-rate and star-formation rate densities as a function of galaxy stellar mass, and the star-forming galaxy stellar mass function. Resultant star-forming galaxy number densities are found to increase following a power-law down to our low mass limit of $\sim10^{6.4}$ M$_{\odot}$ by a single Schechter function with a faint-end slope of $\alpha = -1.41$. Number densities are consistent with those found by the EAGLE simulations invoking a $\Lambda$-CDM cosmology. Overcoming surface brightness and stellar mass biases is important for assessment of the sub-structure problem. The edge of the network has the potential to host services for supporting a variety of user applications, ranging in complexity from data preprocessing, image and video rendering, and interactive gaming, to embedded systems in autonomous cars and built environments. However, the computational and data resources over which such services are hosted, and the actors that interact with these services, have an intermittent availability and access profile, introducing significant risk for user applications that must rely on them. This article investigates the development of an edge marketplace, which is able to support multiple providers for offering services at the network edge, and to enable demand supply for influencing the operation of such a marketplace. Resilience, cost, and quality of service and experience will subsequently enable such a marketplace to adapt its services over time. This article also describes how distributed-ledger technologies (such as blockchains) provide a promising approach to support the operation of such a marketplace and regulate its behavior (such as the GDPR in Europe) and operation. We investigate the connection between the morphology and internal kinematics of the stellar component of central galaxies with mass $M_\star > {10}^{9.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulations. We compare several kinematic diagnostics commonly used to describe simulated galaxies, and find good consistency between them. We model the structure of galaxies as ellipsoids and quantify their morphology via the ratios of their principal axes. We show that the differentiation of blue star-forming and red quiescent galaxies using morphological diagnostics can be achieved with similar efficacy to the use of kinematical diagnostics, but only if one is able to measure both the flattening and the triaxiality of the galaxy. Flattened oblate galaxies exhibit greater rotational support than their spheroidal counterparts, but there is significant scatter in the relationship between morphological and kinematical diagnostics, such that kinematically-similar galaxies can exhibit a broad range of morphologies. The scatter in the relationship between the flattening and the ratio of the rotation and dispersion velocities ($v/\sigma$) correlates strongly with the anisotropy of the stellar velocity dispersion: at fixed $v/\sigma$, flatter galaxies exhibit greater dispersion in the plane defined by the intermediate and major axes than along the minor axis, indicating that the morphology of simulated galaxies is influenced significantly by the structure of their velocity dispersion. The simulations reveal that this anisotropy correlates with the intrinsic morphology of the galaxy's inner dark matter halo, i.e. the halo's morphology that emerges in the absence of dissipative baryonic physics. Using a sample of 472 local Universe (z<0.06) galaxies in the stellar mass range 10.25 < log M*/M_sun < 10.75, we explore the variation in galaxy structure as a function of morphology and galaxy colour. Our sample of galaxies is sub-divided into red, green and blue colour groups and into elliptical and non-elliptical (disk-type) morphologies. Using KiDS and VIKING derived postage stamp images, a group of eight volunteers visually classified bars, rings, morphological lenses, tidal streams, shells and signs of merger activity for all systems. We find a significant surplus of rings ($2.3\sigma$) and lenses ($2.9\sigma$) in disk-type galaxies as they transition across the green valley. Combined, this implies a joint ring/lens green valley surplus significance of $3.3\sigma$ relative to equivalent disk-types within either the blue cloud or the red sequence. We recover a bar fraction of ~44% which remains flat with colour, however, we find that the presence of a bar acts to modulate the incidence of rings and (to a lesser extent) lenses, with rings in barred disk-type galaxies more common by ~20-30 percentage points relative to their unbarred counterparts, regardless of colour. Additionally, green valley disk-type galaxies with a bar exhibit a significant $3.0\sigma$ surplus of lenses relative to their blue/red analogues. The existence of such structures rules out violent transformative events as the primary end-of-life evolutionary mechanism, with a more passive scenario the favoured candidate for the majority of galaxies rapidly transitioning across the green valley., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
