Abstract

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have transformed our understanding of the nanoscale, driving breakthroughs in materials science, computational chemistry, and several other fields, including biophysics and drug design. Even on exascale supercomputers, however, runtimes are excessive for systems and timescales of scientific interest. Here, we demonstrate strong scaling of MD simulations on the Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine. By dedicating a processor core for each simulated atom, we demonstrate a 179-fold improvement in timesteps per second versus the Frontier GPU-based Exascale platform, along with a large improvement in timesteps per unit energy. Reducing every year of runtime to two days unlocks currently inaccessible timescales of slow microstructure transformation processes that are critical for understanding material behavior and function. Our dataflow algorithm runs Embedded Atom Method (EAM) simulations at rates over 270,000 timesteps per second for problems with up to 800k atoms. Ontologies are widely used for achieving interoperable Digital Twins (DTws), yet competing DTw definitions compound interoperability issues. Semantically linking these differing twins is feasible through ontologies and Cognitive Digital Twins (CDTws). However, it is often unclear how ontology use bolsters broader DTw advancements. This article presents a systematic survey following the PRISMA method, to explore the potential of ontologies to support DTws to meet the Centre for Digital Built Britain's Gemini Principles and aims to link progress in ontologies to this framework. The Gemini Principles focus on common DTw requirements, considering: Purpose for 1) Public Good, 2) Value Creation, and 3) Insight; Trustworthiness with sufficient 4) Security, 5) Openness, and 6) Quality; and appropriate Functionality of 7) Federation, 8) Curation, and 9) Evolution. This systematic literature review examines the role of ontologies in facilitating each principle. Existing research uses ontologies to solve DTw challenges within these principles, particularly by connecting DTws, optimising decisionmaking, and reasoning governance policies. Furthermore, analysing the sectoral distribution of literature found that research encompassing the crossover of ontologies, DTws and the Gemini Principles is emerging, and that most innovation is predominantly within manufacturing and built environment sectors. 7. Scaled quadratic variation for controlled rough paths and parameter estimation of fractional diffusions

Abstract

We introduce the concept of finite $\gamma$-scaled quadratic variation along a sequence of partitions for paths on a given interval. This concept, with historical roots in the study of Gaussian processes by Gladyshev (1961) and Klein \& Gin\'e (1975), includes the fractional Brownian motion (fBM) with Hurst index $H$, which has finite $1-2H$-scaled quadratic variation. We show that a path that is controlled by a path with finite $\gamma$-scaled quadratic variation in the sense of M. Gubinelli inherits this property, and the corresponding scaled quadratic variation satisfies an It\^o-isometry type formula. Moreover, we prove quantitative error bounds that establish a relationship between the convergence rates of the scaled quadratic variation of the controlled path and that of the controlling path. Additionally, we introduce a consistent estimator for the parameter $\gamma$ based on a single sample path, complete with quantitative error bounds. We apply these results to the parameter estimation for fractional diffusions. Our findings specify convergence rates for the estimation of both the Hurst index and the parameters in the noise vector fields. The paper concludes with numerical experiments that substantiate our theoretical findings.

Abstract

We study the global convergence of a Fisher-Rao policy gradient flow for infinite-horizon entropy-regularised Markov decision processes with Polish state and action space. The flow is a continuous-time analogue of a policy mirror descent method. We establish the global well-posedness of the gradient flow and demonstrate its exponential convergence to the optimal policy. Moreover, we prove the flow is stable with respect to gradient evaluation, offering insights into the performance of a natural policy gradient flow with log-linear policy parameterisation. To overcome challenges stemming from the lack of the convexity of the objective function and the discontinuity arising from the entropy regulariser, we leverage the performance difference lemma and the duality relationship between the gradient and mirror descent flows.

Abstract

Previous observations of dark vortices in Neptune's atmosphere, such as Voyager-2's Great Dark Spot, have been made in only a few, broad-wavelength channels, which has hampered efforts to pinpoint their pressure level and what makes them dark. Here, we present Very Large Telescope (Chile) MUSE spectrometer observations of Hubble Space Telescope's NDS-2018 dark spot, made in 2019. These medium-resolution 475 - 933 nm reflection spectra allow us to show that dark spots are caused by a darkening at short wavelengths (< 700 nm) of a deep ~5-bar aerosol layer, which we suggest is the H$_2$S condensation layer. A deep bright spot, named DBS-2019, is also visible on the edge of NDS-2018, whose spectral signature is consistent with a brightening of the same 5-bar layer at longer wavelengths (> 700 nm). This bright feature is much deeper than previously studied dark spot companion clouds and may be connected with the circulation that generates and sustains such spots., Comment: 1 table. 3 figures. Abstract

We prove a general result implying the $L^2$ stability of Haar decompositions of $L^2({\bf R}^d)$ functions when the Haar functions are distorted by arbitrary, independent, affine changes of variable that are close to the identity. We apply our method to get fully $d$-dimensional generalizations of results of Aimar, Bernardis, Gorosito, Govil, and Zalik, on constructing frames of smooth functions which are, in many natural senses, arbitrarily close to the Haar functions. We also obtain a best-possible estimate on the $L^2$ sensitivity of dyadic averages of functions to small distortions caused by local affine changes of variable.

If $f:{\bf R}^d\to{\bf C}$ is bounded and $f$'s H\"older $\alpha$-modulus of continuity grows no faster than $(1+\vert x\vert)^M$ ($M\geq0$) then, for every $\epsilon>0$, there is a $\beta>0$ such that $f$'s H\"older $\beta$-modulus grows no faster than $(1+\vert x\vert)^{\epsilon}$. We use this easy fact to show that, if $\vert f\vert$ decays as fast as $(1+\vert x\vert)^{-R}$ (for $R>0$) and $f$'s $\alpha$-H\"older modulus grows no faster than $(1+\vert x\vert)^M$, then, for every $0\leq R'< R$, there is a $\beta>0$ such that $f$'s $\beta$-H\"older modulus decays as fast as $(1+\vert x\vert)^{-R'}$. We apply this to strengthen a result of Coifman and Meyer on almost-orthogonality of vaguelet families and to derive other useful facts about vaguelets and vaguelet-like functions.

Abstract

AI-powered programming assistants are increasingly gaining popularity, with GitHub Copilot alone used by over a million developers worldwide. These tools are far from perfect, however, producing code suggestions that may be incorrect in subtle ways. As a result, developers face a new challenge: validating AI's suggestions. This paper explores whether Live Programming (LP), a continuous display of a program's runtime values, can help address this challenge. To answer this question, we built a Python editor that combines an AI-powered programming assistant with an existing LP environment. Using this environment in a between-subjects study (N=17), we found that by lowering the cost of validation by execution, LP can mitigate over- and under-reliance on AI-generated programs and reduce the cognitive load of validation for certain types of tasks., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

18. The Most Underserved Populations: How Rich and Poor Orphans Rise Together

Abstract

Our world has become starkly inequitable with 0.01% of the population owning 11% of all wealth, 1% owning 38% of all wealth, 10% owning 76% of all wealth, and the lower 50% owning almost nothing. Amongst all of these, there is a group of the most vulnerable, the most underserved, and ironically the most silent because, for the most part, they cannot speak for themselves: orphans, most of whom are in the lower 61%. The world population of orphans today is approximately 153 million. Selfishness and indifference have brought us to an appalling point in human history, but a radical change could be made, starting with the orphan population, if the world's middle class and above would adopt them in some way. The purpose of this paper is to explore the feasibility of such a social action and demonstrate the viability and potentially rapid effectiveness of this positive social engineering. The subject area is social and emotional learning, social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, and global citizenship. One of the groups in question is underserved and one is overserved yet underserved in that it lacks real happiness, in effect, both orphans. Through the lens of social constructivism, we examine the feasibility of projects through which the overserved help the underserved and both find fulfillment. Quantitative facts highlight the possibilities for radically ameliorating the orphan problem and qualitative investigation can measure the ensuing fulfillment of these groups.
