Abstract

Stabilizers play a crucial role in preventing undesirable decomposition and degradation reactions of propellants, thus ensuring their long-term performance and safe storage. This review highlights recent advancements in stabilizer selection and formulation techniques, aiming to enhance the stability of single base nitrocellulose (SBNC) propellants. It examines several types of stabilizers for SB-NC propellants, including their reaction mechanisms and effectiveness in preventing degradation reactions of the propellants, as well as the effects of their concentrations, particle sizes, and distributions on the propellants’ stability. Furthermore, it explores innovative approaches such as nano and green stabilizers with improved stability and compatibility. This review also provides insights into methods for evaluating the efficiency and propellant stability of the stabilizers, such as thermal analysis and accelerated aging tests. The findings of this review will assist in developing advanced propellant formulations that meet the growing demand for the applications of NC-based propellants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The development of environmentally friendly materials and composites keeps growing interest from various industries and one of that is in polymer composites processing. The production of polymer composites with nanocellulose as a reinforcement material is currently a hot research area, owing to the superior properties of nanocellulose itself. Research on nanocellulose composites have made significant contributions to the development of functional and sustainable materials for various applications such as packaging, building and construction material, automotive, aerospace, and biomedical. The presence of nanocellulose in composites is usually affected the mechanical properties like tensile strength, flexural strength and impact strength. Besides that, there are several factors that can affect the mechanical properties of nanocellulose composites such as fiber loading, distribution, orientation and the use of compatibilizers. Thus, this article provides an extensive overview on the effect of nanocellulose on the mechanical performance of polymer composites. Abstract

In this work, the adsorption effect of volatile organic compounds (chloroacetophenone, acetonitrile and hexane) towards the change of resistance of CNTs pellet as sensor signal was investigated. CNTs used in this research were synthesized using Floating Catalyst – Chemical Vapor Deposition (FC-CVD) method in optimum condition. The synthesized CNTs were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Raman Spectroscopy. The variation of resistance changes towards the tested gases were recorded using a multimeter. CNTs sensor pellet showed good responses towards the tested gases, however, the sensitivity, response time and recovery time of sensor pellet need to be optimized.

Abstract

Modification of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) plays an important role to produce MWCNT crossbreeds that may be useful for exploration of new materials. In this report, characterization of dimethyl dioctadecylammonium bromide (DDOAB) modified multi-walled carbon nanotube (Mo-MWCNT) using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) is described. FTIR shows the presence of both aliphatic (CH stretching and CH bending) and ammonium (CN stretching) groups from DDOAB and the existence of C=C aromatic functional group from the structure of MWCNT in Mo-MWCNT spectra. This result was supported by TGA result which suggests that there are weight losses due to the degradation of DDOAB (between 250 °C to 500 °C) in the product. In addition, XRD pattern remain after modification suggesting attachment of MWCNT and DDOAB occurs at the surface of MWCNT.

Abstract

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has attracted much attention of many industrialists as well as academicians as these materials can be used as catalysts, adsorbents, anion exchangers, stabilizers and fillers for polymers. The materials which consist of divalent and trivalent cations, and anions are nontoxic and easy to prepare. In addition, the exchangeability of their anions makes them easy to be modified to increase their hydrophobicity property through anion exchange process using long chain surfactant anions. In this study, sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES) modified LDHs was prepared by coprecipitation of LDHs and followed SLES ions modification via ion exchange process. Intercalations of the anions into the LDHs layers were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The presence of functional groups before and after modification was studied by FTIR spectrometry. Thermalgravitmeric analysis also was carried out to determine the amount of surfactant intercalated into LDHs.

Abstract

This review paper explores the potential of oil palm biomass as a valuable cellulose source for the production of nitrocellulose-based propellants, contributing to the green revolution and sustainable energy solutions. It highlights the availability of the corresponding biomass in Malaysia and in line with global studies, the chemical compositions, as well as a brief description of current technologies for converting biomass of oil palm into value added products specifically cellulose. Steps to achieve maximum utilization of biomass from oil palm industry for cellulose production and prospective source for nitrocellulose-based propellant are also proposed. The methodology section outlines the pre-treatment of lignocellulosic fibres, cellulose extraction, and nitrocellulose production processes. Overall, the review underscores the prospective of palm oil biomass as a sustainable cellulose source for propellant manufacturing, while acknowledging the need for further research and advancements in the field.
