Abstract

Blue economy is seen as monetization of resources from the ocean in a sustainable manner. However, intangible resources like energy and freshwater from the sea are as important and can play a dual role in not only mitigating climate change, but also helping the economy through better health of the people, job creation, wealth generation, capacity building of the offshore industry and developing indigenous technologies. The energy-water nexus can be addressed efficiently with novel ocean technologies for harnessing both power and freshwater from the oceans. 42. Impact of thermosiphon on nocturnal yield of conventional solar still

Abstract

A mathematical model to predict the thermosiphon flow rate of a single slope solar still coupled with evacuated tube collector and its validation with experiments is presented in this paper. The objective of this experimental investigation is to determine the significance of thermosiphon flow rate and its impact on the fresh water yield during nocturnal conditions. The coupled system operates under thermosiphon through a heat exchanger placed within the basin water. The work was extended to study the influence of ambient temperature on thermosiphon head generated in the system. It was interesting to observe that higher temperature of water in Evacuated Tubular Collector (ETC) tank did not contribute to better flow rate at the inlet of the siphon circuit for varying exit temperatures. Numerical analysis was performed to determine the thermosiphon flow rate and it has good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract

Byline: Marco Rognoni, S. Kathiroli, Purnima Jalihal Water is a scarce resource, and new collection and production facilities are predicted as necessary in the coming years. Sea water desalination shall be a key technology for the production of fresh water in many areas of the world, and great efforts are now in progress to increase the reliability of the desalination processes and to reduce the relevant investment and operation costs. In this effort, new conceptual desalination process and schemes have been implemented with remarkable innovative content by desalination engineers worldwide. This paper is focused on a quite innovative and inexpensive new process. This process was originally tested by the former SOWIT in Italy and is now redesigned on independent parameters by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in India, for the same specific installations on islands of the Indian Ocean.
