Abstract

Spinal motor neurons (MNs) are susceptible to glutamatergic excitotoxicity, an effect associated with lumbar MN degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). MN susceptibility to environmental toxicant exposure, one prospective contributor to sporadic ALS, has not been systematically studied. The goal of this study was to test the ability of a well-known environmental neurotoxicant to induce hyperexcitability in mouse lumbar MNs. Methylmercury (MeHg) causes neurotoxicity through mechanisms involving elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), a hallmark of excitotoxicity. We tested whether acute exposure to MeHg induces hyperexcitability in MNs by altering synaptic transmission, using whole cell patch-clamp recordings of lumbar spinal MNs in vitro. Acute MeHg exposure (20 μM) led to an increase in the frequency of both spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) and miniature EPSCs. The frequency of inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) was also increased by MeHg. Action potential firing rates, both spontaneous and evoked, were increased by MeHg, despite increases in both EPSCs and IPSCs, indicating a shift toward hyperexcitability. Also consistent with hyperexcitability, fluo 4-AM microfluorimetry indicated that MeHg exposure induced an increase in [Ca2+]i. Spinal cord hyperexcitability is partially mediated by Ca2+-permeable AMPA receptors, as MeHg-dependent increases in EPSCs were blocked by 1-napthyl spermine. Therefore, spinal MNs appear highly susceptible to MeHg exposure, leading to significant increases in spontaneous network excitability and disruption of normal function. Prolonged hyperexcitability could lead to eventual neurodegeneration and loss of motor function as observed in spinal cord after MeHg exposure in vivo and may contribute to MeHg-induced acceleration of ALS symptoms. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Spinal motor neurons (MN) are susceptible to glutamatergic excitotoxicity, an effect associated with lumbar MN degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This study investigated MN susceptibility to environmental toxicant exposure, one prospective contributor to sporadic ALS. Spinal MNs appear highly susceptible to methylmercury exposure, leading to significant increases in spontaneous network excitability and disruption of normal function. Prolonged hyperexcitability could lead to neurodegeneration and loss of motor function as observed in ALS spinal cord symptoms.

Abstract

The process e(+)e(-) -> D*D-+(s)*(s0) (2317)(-) + c.c. is observed for the first time with the data sample of 567 pb(-1) collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at a center-of-mass energy root s = 4.6 GeV. The statistical significance of the D*(s0) (2317)(+/-) signal is 5.8 sigma and the mass is measured to be (2318.3 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.2) MeV/c(2). The absolute branching fraction B(D*(s0) (2317)(+/-) -> pi D-0(s)+/-) is measured as 1.00(-0.14)(+0.00) (stat)(-0.14)(+0.00) (syst) for the first time. The uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract

Using a sample of 448.1 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, a search for the isospin violating decay eta(c) -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(0) via psi(3686) -> gamma eta(c) is presented. No signal is observed, and the upper limit on B(psi(3686) -> gamma eta(c)) x B(eta(c) -> pi(+) pi(-) pi(0)) is determined to be 1.6 x 10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. In addition, a search for eta(1405) -> f(0) (980) pi(0) in psi(3686) radiative decays is performed. No signal is observed, and the branching fraction B(psi(3686) -> gamma eta(1405)) x B(eta(1405) -> f(0)(980)pi(0)) x B(f(0)(980) -> pi(+)pi(-)) is calculated to be less than 5.0 x 10(-7) at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Using a sample of 448.1 x 10(6) Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector in 2009 and 2012, we study the decays chi(c0,2) -> eta 'eta ' and eta eta '. The decays chi(c2) -> eta 'eta ', chi(c0) -> eta eta ' and chi(c2) -> eta eta ' are observed for the first time with statistical significances of 9.6 sigma, 13.4 sigma and 7.5 sigma, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(chi(c0) -> eta 'eta ') = (2.19 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.14) x 10(-3), B(chi(c2) -> eta 'eta ') = (4.76 +/- 0.56 +/- 0.38) x 10(-5), B(chi(c0) -> eta eta ') = (8.92 +/- 0.84 +/- 0.65) x 10(-5) and B(chi(c2) -> eta eta ') = (2.27 +/- 0.43 +/- 0.25) x 10(-5), where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The precision for the measurement of B(chi(c0) -> eta 'eta ') thorn is significantly improved compared to previous measurements. Based on the measured branching fractions, the role played by the doubly and singly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka disconnected transition amplitudes for chi(c0,2) decays into pseudoscalar meson pairs can be clarified.

Abstract

Using a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/Psi events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we study the decays of J/Psi -> KSKL and KSKS. The branching fraction of J/Psi -> KSKL is determined to be B(J/Psi -> KSKL) = (1.93 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst)) x 10(-4), which significantly improves on previous measurements. No clear signal is observed for the J/Psi -> KSKS process, and the upper limit at the 95% confidence level for its branching fraction is determined to be B(J/Psi -> KSKS) < 1.4 x 10(-8), which improves on the previous searches by 2 orders in magnitude and reaches the order of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen expectation.

Abstract

For the past two years, the Foundations in Physics and Mathematics (FPM) summer program has been held at Indiana University in order to fulfill two goals: provide additional physics and mathematics instruction at the high school level, and provide physics graduate students with experience and autonomy in designing curricula and teaching courses. In this paper we will detail changes made to the program for its second year and the motivation for these changes, as well as implications for future iterations of the program. We gauge the impact of the changes on student performance using pre-/post-test scores, student evaluations, and anecdotal evidence. These data show that the program has a positive impact on student knowledge and this impact was greater in magnitude in the second year of the program. We attribute this improvement primarily to the inclusion of more inquiry-driven activities. All activities, worksheets, and lesson plans used in the program are available online.1

Abstract

Based on data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies root s > 4.4 GeV, the processes e(+)e(-) -> omega chi(c1,2) are observed for the first time. With an integrated luminosity of 1074 pb(-1) near root s = 4.42 GeV, a significant omega chi(c2) signal is found, and the cross section is measured to be (20.9 +/- 3.2 +/- 2.5) pb. With 567 pb(-1) near root s = 4.6 GeV, a clear omega chi(c2) signal is seen, and the cross section is measured to be (9.5 +/- 2.1 +/- 1.3) pb, while evidence is found for an omega chi(c2) signal. The first errors are statistical, and the second are systematic. Due to low luminosity or low cross section at other energies, no significant signals are observed. In the omega chi(c2) cross section, an enhancement is seen around root s = 4.42 GeV. Fitting the cross section with a coherent sum of the psi(4415) Breit-Wigner function and a phase-space term, the branching fraction B(psi(4415) -> omega chi(c2)) is obtained to be of the order of 10(-3).

Abstract

We present a study of the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-) (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) using data samples of 1092 pb(-1) at root s = 4.23 GeV and 826 pb(-1) at root s = 4.26 GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. With full reconstruction of the D meson pair and the bachelor pi(+) in the final state, we confirm the existence of the charged structure Z(c) (3885)(-/+) in the (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) system in the two isospin processes e(+)e(-) -> pi(+DD)-D-0*(-) and e(+)e(-) -> pi+D-D*(0). By performing a simultaneous fit, the statistical significance of Zc(3885)(-/+) signal is determined to be greater than 10 sigma, and its pole mass and width are measured to be M-pole = (3881.7 +/- 1.6(stat) +/- 1.6(syst)) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(pole) = (26.6 +/- 2.0(stat) +/- 2.1(syst)) MeV, respectively. The Born cross section times the (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) branching fraction (sigma(e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-)Z(c)(3885)(-/+)) x Br(Z(c)(3885)(-/+) -> (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) )) is measured to be (141.6 +/- 7.9(stat) +/- 12.3(syst)) pb at root s = 4.23 GeV and (108.4 +/- 6.9(stat) +/- 8.8(syst)) pb at root s = 4.26 GeV. The polar angular distribution of the pi(+) - Z(c)(3885)(-/+) system is consistent with the expectation of a quantum number assignment of J(P) = 1(+) for Z(c)(3885)(-/+).

Abstract

An amplitude analysis of the pi(0)pi(0) system produced in radiative J/psi decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the pi(0)pi(0) system is determined as a function of M pi(0)pi(0) from an analysis of the (1.311 +/- 0.011) x 10(9) J/psi decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the pi(0)pi(0) system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of J/psi -> pi(0)pi(0) is determined to be (1.15 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3), where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

Abstract

We present the first upper-limit measurement of the branching fractions of the isospin-violating transitions chi(c0,2) -> pi(0)eta(c). The measurements are performed using 106 x 10(6) psi(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the psi(3686) mass. We obtained upper limits on the branching fractions at a 90% confidence level of B(chi(c0) -> pi(0)eta(c)) pi(0)eta(c)) < 3.2 x 10(-3).

Abstract

A 2:25 x 10(8) J/psi event sample accumulated with the BESIII detector is used to study the doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-suppressed decay modes J/psi -> gamma omega phi, omega -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), phi -> K+K-. A strong deviation (> 30 sigma) from three-body J/psi -> gamma omega phi phase space is observed near the omega phi mass threshold that is consistent with a previous observation reported by the BESII experiment. A partial wave analysis with a tensor covariant amplitude that assumes that the enhancement is due to the presence of a resonance, the X(1810), is performed and confirms that the spin-parity of the X(1810) is 0(++). The mass and width of the X(1810) are determined to be M = 1795 +/- 7(stat)(-5)(+13) (syst) +/- 19(mod) MeV/c(2) and Gamma = 95 +/- 10(stat)(-34)(+21)(syst) +/- 75(mod) MeV/c(2), respectively, and the product branching fraction is measured to be B(J/psi -> gamma X(1810)) x B(X(1810) -> omega phi) = (2.00 +/- 0.08(stat)(-1.00)(+0.45)(syst) +/- 1.30(mod)) x 10(-4). Abstract

The second generation B-factory at the SuperKEKB facility in Tsukuba, Japan is beginning to take shape. The highly anticipated Belle II experiment will have a rich physics program at the intensity frontier, in complement to existing experiments in the energy frontier. Accelerator commissioning has been making good progress, as has the construction and installation of the Belle II detector. An overview of the physics prospects at Belle II, as well as the status and schedule of the experiment, is presented.
