2. Inertia drives concentration-wave turbulence in swimmer suspensions

Abstract

We discover an instability mechanism in suspensions of self-propelled particles that does not involve active stress. Instead, it is driven by a subtle interplay of inertia, swimmer motility, and concentration fluctuations, through a crucial time lag between the velocity and the concentration field. The resulting time-persistent state seen in our high-resolution numerical simulations consists of self-sustained waves of concentration and orientation, transiting from regular oscillations to wave turbulence. 10. Photocatalytic evaluation of chitosan and its derivative coated vanadium pentoxide nanoparticles for photodegradation of methylene blue

Abstract

Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is widely utilized as a photocatalyst for the degradation of various pollutants due to its narrow bandgap and convertible oxidation states of vanadium. Here, V2O5 nano-adsorbents coated with functionalized chitosan exhibit a great sensitivity to the absorption of visible light that makes them a suitable candidate to study the photodegradation of methylene blue in the natural atmosphere. Characterization results revealed the synthesis of chitosan-anisaldehyde Schiff base and its presence over the surface of nanoparticles. Fabricated nanoparticles exhibited enhanced optical band gap that increases the photodegradation efficiency by reducing the recombination rate as well as they possess an orthorhombic crystalline phase as confirmed by XRD. Among all fabricated nanoparticles, one of the coated nano-adsorbents, chitosan-anisaldehyde adorned V2O5 (CHA1), having wedge-shaped pores that aided in the photocatalytic destruction of methylene blue illustrates the best degradation efficiency as compared to the bare ones.

Abstract

In the modern era, inorganic nanoparticles have received profound attention as they possess boundless applications in various fields. Among these, vanadium-based nanoparticles (VNPs) are highly remarkable due to their inherent physiological and biological properties with many therapeutic and other applications, such as drug delivery systems for diseases like cancer, environmental remediation, energy storage, energy conversion, and photocatalysis. Moreover, physically, and chemically synthesized VNPs are very versatile, however, these synthesis routes cause concern to health and the environment due to the highly savage reaction conditions, using highly toxic and harsh chemicals, which compel the researchers to develop an eco-friendly, greener, and sustainable route for synthesis. In this outlook, to avoid the innumerable limitations, a bio approach is used over chemical and physical methods. This present review emphasis on the role of various biological components in the synthesis, especially Phyto-molecules that acts as capping and reducing agent, and solvent system for the nanoparticles synthesis. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the biogenic synthesized nanoparticles has also been discussed. Finally, potential applications of as-synthesized VNPs, principally as an antimicrobial agent and their role as a nanomedicine, energy applications as a supercapacitor, and photocatalytic agents, have been discussed. 41. Chitosan-coated pore wall polycaprolactone three-dimensional porous scaffolds fabricated by porogen leaching method for bone tissue engineering: a comparative study on blending technique to fabricate scaffolds

Abstract

One of the significant challenges in the fabrication of scaffolds for tissue engineering lies in the direct interaction of bioactive agents with cells in the scaffolds matrix, which curbs the effectiveness of bioactive agents resulting in diminished cell recognition and attachment ability of the scaffolds. Here, three-dimensional porous scaffolds were fabricated using polycaprolactone (PCL) and chitosan, by two approaches, i.e., blending and surface coating to compare their overall effectiveness. Blended scaffolds (Chi-PCL) were compared with the scaffolds fabricated using surface coating technique, where chitosan was coated on the pore wall of PCL scaffolds (C-PCL). The C-PCL exhibited a collective improvement in bioactivities of the stem cell on the scaffold, because of the cell compatible environment provided by the presence of chitosan over the scaffolds interface. The C-PCL showed the enhanced cell attachment and proliferation behavior of the scaffolds along with two-fold increase in hemolysis compatibility compared to Chi-PCL. Furthermore, the compression strength in C-PCL increased by 24.52% and 8.62% increase in total percentage porosity compared to Chi-PCL was attained. Along with this, all the bone markers showed significant upregulation in C-PCL scaffolds, which supported the surface coating technique over the conventional methods, even though the pore size of C-PCL was compromised by 19.98% compared with Chi-PCL.

50. Bioinspired molecular modeling and antibacterial efficacy of silver/graphene oxide grafted chitosan nanocomposite for food packaging applications

Abstract

Design and development of novel eco-friendly materials with outstanding antimicrobial properties have transpired to impede and regulate the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Bionanocomposites are the propitious aspirant to circumvent the global warming emanates and proliferation in pollution attributed to biocompatibility, degradability, and environmental benign primacy. Undoubtedly, silver nanoparticles are the magic bullet that has efficient antimicrobial properties against various bacterial strains. The synchronous existence of chitosan and Ag nanoparticles are the two crucial protruding antibacterial agents that divulged imperious antibacterial properties against gram-positivestrains in comparison to gram-negativestrains. This indagation will shed light on the experimentation and analysis of chitosan/PVA biohybrid grafted with graphene and silver nanoparticles for screening of antibacterial efficiency. The tensile strength of 15% GO/CS/Ag/PVA was found to be 81.99 MPa as compared to pristine chitosan which was 36 MPa. The active resultant bio-nano hybrid fabricated viaa biomimetic approach evinced magnificently thermostable, mechanically robust, and antibacterial properties which make it a potential candidate for packaging applications. The results revealed that the inhibition is relatively dependent upon concentration. It has been noticed that a better antibacterial effect was shown by gram-positive bacteria contrary to gram-negative strains for GO-reinforced CS films owing to the presence of silver nanoparticles.
