Abstract This letter presents a wirelessly powered LED driving circuit for a smart contact lens system. Since photobiomodulation has been investigated for ocular disease treatment by irradiating light with a specific wavelength, a smart contact lens equipped with a µLED and its controller IC can be utilized as a phototherapy system. The proposed circuit design facilitates constant‐current generation to drive the LED and incorporates a wirelessly powered system. The system can be turned on and off in synchronization with an external wireless power source, providing controllability for the LED's irradiation period and intensity. The IC is fabricated in the 180‐nm CMOS process with a die area of 1.0 mm2 and integrated into the smart contact lens with an external loop antenna and a far red/NIR LED. The measurement demonstrates the irradiation period of the LED is successfully controlled by the external source, with current levels from 0.53 mA to 1.4 mA, thereby confirming the feasibility of the phototherapy system.

Abstract 4Hb-TaS2 is a superconductor that exhibits unique characteristics such as time-reversal symmetry breaking, hidden magnetic memory, and topological edge modes. It is a naturally occurring heterostructure comprising of alternating layers of 1H-TaS2 and 1T-TaS2. The former is a well-known superconductor, while the latter is a correlated insulator with a possible non- trivial magnetic ground state. In this study, we use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the normal state electronic structure of this unconventional superconductor. Our findings reveal that the band structure of 4Hb-TaS2 fundamentally differs from that of its constituent materials. Specifically, we observe a significant charge transfer from the 1T layers to the 1H layers that drives the 1T layers away from half-filling. In addition, we find a substantial reduction in inter-layer coupling in 4Hb-TaS2 compared to the coupling in 2H-TaS2 that results in a pronounced spin-valley locking within 4Hb-TaS2.

Berry curvature sits at the heart of both the anomalous hall effect and topological hall effect, with the former arising from a momentum space berry curvature, while the latter arises from a real space berry curvature. Here, Li et al present an intriguing example of a combined real and reciprocal space berry curvature in the kagome material Mn3Sn, resulting in a large field linear anomalous Hall effect.

Abstract Individuals who are unable to walk independently spend most of the day in a wheelchair. This population is at high risk for developing pressure injuries caused by sitting. However, early diagnosis and prevention of these injuries still remain challenging. Herein, we introduce battery-free, wireless, multimodal sensors and a movable system for continuous measurement of pressure, temperature, and hydration at skin interfaces. The device design includes a crack-activated pressure sensor with nanoscale encapsulations for enhanced sensitivity, a temperature sensor for measuring skin temperature, and a galvanic skin response sensor for measuring skin hydration levels. The movable system enables power harvesting, and data communication to multiple wireless devices mounted at skin-cushion interfaces of wheelchair users over full body coverage. Experimental evaluations and numerical simulations of the devices, together with clinical trials for wheelchair patients, demonstrate the feasibility and stability of the sensor system for preventing pressure injuries caused by sitting.

Van der Waals heterostructures allow for the integration of several materials with different properties in the one heterostructure. Here, Li et al combine a quantum spin hall insulator, WTe2, with an insulating ferromagnet, Cr2Ge2Te6, in a van der Waals heterostructure, with resulting proximity-induced magnetism in the WTe2 layer leading to an anomalous Hall and Nernst effect.

In severe or complex cases of peripheral nerve injuries, autologous nerve grafts are the gold standard yielding promising results, but limited availability and donor site morbidity are some of its disadvantages. Although biological or synthetic substitutes are commonly used, clinical outcomes are inconsistent. Biomimetic alternatives derived from allogenic or xenogenic sources offer an attractive off-the-shelf supply, and the key to successful peripheral nerve regeneration focuses on an effective decellularization process. In addition to chemical and enzymatic decellularization protocols, physical processes might offer identical efficiency. In this comprehensive minireview, we summarize recent advances in the physical methods for decellularized nerve xenograft, focusing on the effects of cellular debris clearance and stability of the native architecture of a xenograft. Furthermore, we compare and summarize the advantages and disadvantages, indicating the future challenges and opportunities in developing multidisciplinary processes for decellularized nerve xenograft.

Bioresorbable implantable medical devices can be employed in versatile clinical scenarios that burden patients with complications and surgical removal of conventional devices. However, a shortage of suitable electricalinterconnection materials limits the development of bioresorbable electronic systems. Therefore, this study highlights a highly conductive, naturally resorbable paste exhibiting enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical stability that can solve the existing problems of bioresorbable interconnections. Multifaceted experiments on electrical and physical properties were used to optimize the composition of pastes containing beeswax, submicron tungstenparticles, and glycofurol. These pastes embody isotropic conductive paths for three-dimensional interconnects and function as antennas, sensors, and contact pads for bioresorbable electronic devices. The degradation behavior in aqueous solutions was used to assess its stability and ability to retain electrical conductance (∼7 ​kS/m) and structural form over the requisite dissolution period. In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility tests clarified the safety of the paste as an implantable material.

Kagome metal TbMn6Sn6 was recently discovered to be a ferrimagnetic topological Dirac material. Here, the authors observe anomalous Nernst effect and anomalous thermal Hall effect which exhibit asymmetry with respect to the magnetic field.

Uninterrupted monitoring of pressure and temperature at skin interfaces can help to minimize the potential for pressure injuries in hospitalized or bedridden patients. Here, the authors introduce a soft, skin-mountable sensor that can continuously provide readings via antennas mounted under bedding, and demonstrate the functionality and robustness of the devices on patients.

Certain materials without inversion symmetry may allow for a nonlinear anomalous Hall effect with conserved time reversal symmetry. Here, the authors report an extremely large c-axis nonlinear anomalous Hall effect in the non-centrosymmetric Td phase of MoTe2 and WTe2 without intrinsic magnetic order that is dominated by extrinsic scattering.

Dirac semimetals feature Dirac cones with topologically nontrivial states in the bulk that are protected by crystalline symmetries. They attract considerable attention due to rich quantum states and properties of interest, such as high Fermi velocities, mobility, and small effective masses. Here, we show that a ternary intermetallic BaAuSb crystal hosts both trivial and nontrivial topological Dirac states in the bulk. The nontrivial Fermi-surface pocket at the Brillouin zone center is characterized with only a few hundredths of a bare electron mass and with very high mobility. All parts of the Fermi surface detected by quantum oscillations, topologically trivial or nontrivial, have carriers with unusually high Fermi velocities and small masses. These conducting states may be coupled with magnetic moments in materials where Ba is replaced by magnetic rare-earth atoms.

Bioresorbable electronic stimulators can deliver electrical stimulation in rodents to enhance functional muscle recovery after nerve injury. Here, the authors present a bioresorbable dynamic covalent polymer that enables reliable, long-lived operation of soft, stretchable devices of this type.

Band topology of Weyl semimetals is usually predetermined by material parameters and can hardly be manipulated, and their transport properties appear at low temperature. Here, the authors modify the topology via a weak magnetic field and observe a giant anomalous Hall effect at room temperature.

Two novel synthetic approaches for synthesizing (E)-3-(1,3-diarylallylidene)oxindoles from oxindole were developed. All previously reported methods for synthesizing 3-(1,3-diarylallylidene)oxindoles utilized palladium-catalyzed reactions as a key step to form this unique skeleton. Despite high efficiency, palladium-catalyzed reactions have limitations in terms of substrate scope. Especially, an iodoaryl moiety cannot be introduced by the previous methods due to its high reactivity toward the palladium catalyst. Our Knoevenagel/allylic oxidation/Wittig and Knoevenagel/aldol/dehydration strategies complement each other and show broad substrate scope, including substrates with iodoaryl groups. The current methods utilized acetophenones, benzylidene phosphonium ylides, and benzaldehydes that are commercially available or easily accessible. Thus, the current synthetic approaches to (E)-3-(1,3-diarylallyldiene)oxindoles are readily amendable for variety of oxindole derivatives.

Abstract Background Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common clinical syndrome with significant negative outcomes. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a delirium screening tool and multidisciplinary delirium prevention project. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single teaching center in Korea. A cohort of patients who underwent a delirium prevention program using a simple delirium screening tool from December 2018 to February 2019 (intervention group, N = 275) was compared with the cohort from the year before implementation of the delirium prevention program (December 2017 to February 2018) (control group, N = 274). Patients aged ≥65 years who were admitted to orthopedic wards and underwent surgery were included. The incidence rates of delirium before and after implementation of the delirium prevention program, effectiveness of the delirium screening tool, change in the knowledge score of nurses, and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results The sensitivity and specificity of the screening tool for the incidence of POD were 94.1 and 72.7%, respectively. The incidence rates of POD were 10.2% (control group) and 6.2% (intervention group). The odds ratio for the risk reduction effect of the project related to the incidence of POD was 0.316 (95% confidence interval: 0.125–0.800, p = 0.015) after adjustment for possible confounders. Abstract The atomic or molecular assembly on 2D materials through the relatively weak van der Waals interaction is quite different from the conventional heteroepitaxy and may result in unique growth behaviors. Here, it is shown that straight 1D cyanide chains display universal epitaxy on hexagonal 2D materials. A universal oriented assembly of cyanide crystals (AgCN, AuCN, and Cu0.5Au0.5CN) is observed, where the chains are aligned along the three zigzag lattice directions of various 2D hexagonal crystals (graphene, h‐BN, WS2, MoS2, WSe2, MoSe2, and MoTe2). The potential energy landscape of the hexagonal lattice induces this preferred alignment of 1D chains along the zigzag lattice directions, regardless of the lattice parameter and surface elements as demonstrated by first‐principles calculations and parameterized surface potential calculations. Furthermore, the oriented microwires can serve as crystal orientation markers, and stacking‐angle‐controlled vertical 2D heterostructures are successfully fabricated by using them as markers. The oriented van der Waals epitaxy can be generalized to any hexagonal 2D crystals and will serve as a unique growth process to form crystals with orientations along the zigzag directions by epitaxy.

Transient electronics entails the capability of electronic components to dissolve or reabsorb in a controlled manner when used in biomedical implants. Here, the authors perform a systematic study of the processes of hydrolysis, bioabsorption, cytotoxicity and immunological biocompatibility of monolayer MoS2.

We report the discovery of a new three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) material KZnBi, coexisting with a naturally formed superconducting state on the surface under ambient pressure. Using photoemission spectroscopy together with first-principles calculations, a 3D Dirac state with linear band dispersion is identified. The characteristic features of massless Dirac fermions are also confirmed by magnetotransport measurements, exhibiting an extremely small cyclotron mass of m^{*}=0.012 m_{0} and a high Fermi velocity of v_{F}=1.04×10^{6} m/s. Interestingly, superconductivity occurs below 0.85 K on the (001) surface, while the bulk remains nonsuperconducting. The captured linear temperature dependence of the upper critical field suggests the possible non-s-wave character of this surface superconductivity. Our discovery serves a distinctive platform to study the interplay between 3D TDS and the superconductivity.

In large-scale computations of physical problems, one often encounters the situation of having to determine a multidimensional function, which can be numerically costly when computing each point in this multidimensional space is already time-demanding. In the work, we propose that the active learning algorithm can speed up such calculations. The basic idea is to fit a multidimensional function by neural networks, and the key point is to make the query of labeled data more economical by using a strategy called “query by committee.” We present the general protocol of this fitting scheme, as well as the procedure of how to further compute physical observables with the fitted functions. We show that this method can work well with two examples, which are the quantum three-body problem in atomic physics and the anomalous Hall conductivity in condensed matter physics, respectively. In these examples, we show that one reaches an accuracy of a few percent error in computing physical observables, all the while using fewer than 10% of total data points compared with uniform sampling. With these two examples, we also visualize that by using the active learning algorithm, the required amount of data points are added mostly in the regime where the function varies most rapidly, which explains the mechanism for the efficiency of the algorithm. We expect broad applications of our method to various kinds of computational physical problems.

Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect, like its Hall counterpart, is generated by Berry curvature of electrons in solids. Little is known about its response to disorder. In contrast, the link between the amplitude of the ordinary Nernst coefficient and the mean-free path is extensively documented. Here, by studying Co_{3}Sn_{2}S_{2}, a topological half-metallic semimetal hosting sizable and recognizable ordinary and anomalous Nernst responses, we demonstrate an anticorrelation between the amplitudes of carrier mobility and the anomalous S_{xy}^{A} (the ratio of transverse electric field to the longitudinal temperature gradient in the absence of magnetic field). We argue that the observation, paradoxically, establishes the intrinsic origin of the anomalous Nernst effect in this system. We conclude that various intrinsic off-diagonal coefficients are set by the way the Berry curvature is averaged on a grid involving the mean-free path, the Fermi wavelength, and the de Broglie thermal length.

Coupling together distinct correlated and topologically nontrivial electronic phases of matter can potentially induce novel electronic orders and phase transitions among them. Transition metal dichalcogenide compounds serve as a bedrock for exploration of such hybrid systems. They host a variety of exotic electronic phases, and their Van der Waals nature enables to admix them, either by exfoliation and stacking or by stoichiometric growth, and thereby induce novel correlated complexes. Here, we investigate the compound 4Hb-TaS2 that interleaves the Mott-insulating state of 1T-TaS2 and the putative spin liquid it hosts together with the metallic state of 2H-TaS2 and the lowtemperature superconducting phase it harbors using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We reveal a thermodynamic phase diagram that hosts a first-order quantum phase transition between a correlated Kondo-like cluster state and a depleted flat band state. We demonstrate that this intrinsic transition can be induced by an electric field and temperature as well as by manipulation of the interlayer coupling with the probe tip, hence allowing to reversibly toggle between the Kondo-like cluster and the depleted flat band states. The phase transition is manifested by a discontinuous change of the complete electronic spectrum accompanied by hysteresis and low-frequency noise. We find that the shape of the transition line in the phase diagram is determined by the local compressibility and the entropy of the two electronic states. Our findings set such heterogeneous structures as an exciting platform for systematic investigation and manipulation of Mott–metal transitions and strongly correlated phases and quantum phase transitions therein.
