PurposeThis research seeks to evaluate the repercussions of socioeconomic status (SES) on physical activity (PA) among the older population, both pre and intra-COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to scrutinize whether alteration in PA behaviors based on SES impacts cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is well established that PA has a significant association with CVDs and the pandemic has restricted PA in the older population. We endeavor to discern whether SES modulates PA levels and whether these levels of PA behavior subsequently influence the incidence of CVDs among older adults.MethodsThe analytical framework of this study relies on the data procured from the Fact-Finding on the Status of Senior Citizens (FSSSC) survey conducted in 2017 and 2020, involving 10,299 (75 ± 6 years) and 10,097 (74 ± 6 years) participants, respectively. We employ Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to elucidate the ramification of the COVID-19 pandemic on CVDs while accommodating potential mediating and confounding variables, including socioeconomic status, PA levels, body mass index (BMI), and gender, in the context of the pandemic and CVDs.ResultsOur empirical models indicated a tendency for older adults of lower socioeconomic status (SES) to exhibit diminished levels of physical activity (PA) compared to their counterparts of higher SES, particularly considering the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The optimal frequency and duration of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) that augments microvascular function is unknown. A single bout of RIPC increases cutaneous endothelial function for ∼48 h, whereas 1 week of daily RIPC bouts improves more sustained endothelium-independent function. We hypothesized that 3 days of RIPC separated by rest days (3QOD RIPC) would result in sustained increases in both endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent functions. Cutaneous microvascular function was assessed in 13 healthy young participants (aged 20.5 ± 3.9 years; 5 males, 8 females) before 3QOD and then 24, 48, and 72 h and a week after 3QOD. RIPC consisted of four repetitions of 5 min of blood flow occlusion separated by 5 min of reperfusion. Skin blood flow responses to local heating (Tloc = 42°C), acetylcholine (Ach), and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were measured using laser speckle contrast imaging and expressed as cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC = PU⋅mmHg–1). Local heating-mediated vasodilation was increased 72 h after 3QOD and the increased responsivity persisted a week later (1.08 ± 0.24 vs. 1.34 ± 0.46, 1.21 ± 0.36 PU⋅mmHg–1; ΔCVC, pre-RIPC vs. 72 h, a week after 3QOD; P = 0.054). Ach-induced cutaneous vasodilation increased a week after 3QOD (0.73 ± 0.41 vs. 0.95 ± 0.49 PU⋅mmHg–1; ΔCVC, pre-RIPC vs. a week after 3QOD; P < 0.05). SNP-induced cutaneous vasodilation increased 24 h after 3QOD (0.47 ± 0.28 vs. 0.63 ± 0.35 PU⋅mmHg–1; ΔCVC, pre-RIPC vs. 24 h; P < 0.05), but this change did not persist thereafter. Thus, 3QOD induced sustained improvement in endothelium-dependent vasodilation but was not sufficient to sustain increases in endothelium-independent vasodilation.

Many recent studies show that during the early Joseon dynasty, even kings who externally appeared strongly anti-Buddhist defended or condoned royal relatives who sponsored Buddhist works. Extant sutras produced under court sponsorship attest to this fact. An analysis of the production of court Buddhist prints, focusing on the King Sejo era when a particularly large number of Buddhist projects were completed, yields diverse information such as changes in the style of Buddhist prints and their causes, as well as the intentions of the sponsors. This article examines the creation of new iconography and other aspects of Buddhist prints sponsored by the royal family during the early Joseon period, focusing on the print in the Record of the Manifestation of Avalokitesvara, published during the reign of King Sejo. This new iconography was created at a time that, according to the intentions of the sponsor, clearly attests that the independent creation of iconography did occur in Joseon Buddhist prints, which were mostly considered to be reproductions made by copying the woodblocks of existing prints. Moreover, the projection of the ruler onto Buddhist images as a way to strengthen power shows that Joseon shared perceptions with other countries that sought to use Buddhism as a means of rule.

This paper focuses on the iconography of “the Listener” in Buddhist prints that was adopted in Joseon dynasty Sakyamuni Preaching paintings. Regarding change in the Listener iconography from bodhisattva form to monk form, diverse research has been conducted on the Listener’s identity and origin. However, existing studies are limited as they fail to consider the circumstances of the time this iconography was first adopted and trends in Joseon Buddhism. As the first Joseon print where the Listener in bodhisattva form appeared was based on a print from the Chinese Ming dynasty, and considering trends in publication of Buddhist prints in China where pictures of the Buddha preaching were used repeatedly in sutras regardless of the contents, this paper argues that the Listener should not be identified with any particular figure and examines the current state and characteristics of Joseon Buddhist paintings where the Listener appears. It also explores the possibility that the Listener’s change from bodhisattva form to monk form was driven by monk artists such as Myeongok, who were exposed to diverse iconography as they participated in creating both Buddhist paintings and prints in a situation where monks who had received systematic education gained a new awareness of iconography.

This paper examines the characteristics and production background of major examples of single-sheet Buddhist woodblock illustrated prints. In the form a single sheet of paper, the original first prints were not easily handed down, and in most cases the date and place of production are not clearly known. These factors made systematic research difficult, but the release of various related materials has recently enabled comprehensive study of the subject. As materials substantiating Buddhism’s religious role in society and the propagation activities of temples, single-sheet Buddhist prints hold great value. Research showed that two major types of single-sheet Buddhist prints were made: dharani-type prints used as talismans and prints used for worship or spiritual practice. The former type was likely made for self-protection or Buddhist enshrinement in statues for their protection and to seek blessings for this meritorious deed or to protect the dharma. The latter type was used as a visual aid in worship and chanting. They can be divided into prints featuring universally loved icons and prints featuring icons reflecting the trends of certain periods. They were analyzed in relation to popular beliefs and methods of spiritual practice in the Buddhist circle as well as trends in faith among the ordinary people.
