Although many workers have speculated about the nature of parental drinking models upon the development of attitudes towards, and knowledge of, alcoholic drink amongst children, there has until recently been no systematic study of these precise issues. In the present study, parents' own selfreported alcohol consumption was compared with children's knowledge of specific drinks and normative usage patterns. Whilst developmental trends were discerned in the results, most of the children made correct discriminations overall, very few scoring zero or negative (reversed) discrimination scores. Exhaustive examination of the data failed to reveal any consistent pattern of relationships between children's knowledge and the drinking model provided by their own parents. Precisely the same result was obtained from a similar study carried out by Penrose [5] in the U.S.A.. Two indexes to a collection of 3,204 documents in the field of chemistry were test-searched. The indexes are a keyword from title index without added keywords and a single access point per document alphabetic subject index. The indexes were searched by 13 graduate chemistry students using 55 questions. Search results are characterized in terms of recall, precision, and search time. There is no statistically significant difference in recall and precision search results between the multiple access points per document keyword from title index and the single access point per document alphabetic subject index. Twenty-six science and technology and chemistry libraries kept a record of unanswered science and technology reference questions received during a 1-month period. The 47 questions collected are listed and reasons why they were not answered are given. Unanswered questions and types of questions that are difficult or impossible to answer were collected to determine what improvements in the science and technology bibliographic apparatus appear desirable. In view of the small number of unanswered questions collected in this study, other techniques for determining desirable improvements in the bibliographic apparatus are suggested. Interviews with 75 graduate school faculty members in the science and engineering departments at Florida State University have revealed that 46 of the interviewed faculty members maintain personal indexes. Three basic types of subject indexes, the alphabetic subject index, the hierarchically classified index and the coordinate index, were examined for similarities and differences. Differences dependent upon type of index were determined to be: (1) number of steps required to get at identifications of potentially pertinent documents, and (2) specificity of access point and number of concepts in a search heading. These differences were used to formulate types of searches best answered by a particular type of index. Index requirements of an internal reports collection were then determined by translating 142 subject searches of this collection into types of searches best answered by each of the three types of indexes. A shape-preference test was designed by McElroy on basis of 'a possible corollary of psychoanalytic theory' and administered to Scottish schoolchildren. In accordance with predictions there was a significant tendency, increasing with age, for boys to prefer round shapes (disguised female symbols) and for girls to prefer rectilinear ones (disguised male symbols). McElroy suggested alternative hypotheses that might, in his view, account equally well for effects obtained. In present study McElroy's main alternative hypotheses were examined and it appeared that, as formulated by him, they could not be used to predict results in Accra. It was shown, however, that psychoanalytic hypothesis did permit a definite prediction: in a cultural situation where there is less repression, one would expect sex differences to be smaller. test was given in a modified form, which made more detailed analysis possible. A greatly reduced, but still significant, sex difference was in fact obtained. Age changes, contrasting with those found in Scotland, were also shown to be consistent with psychoanalytic hypothesis. This article presents information about the book "Migration and Belonging, A Study of Mental Health and Personal Adjustment in Israel," by Abraham A. Weinberg. This book is about the problems of migration. The major part of the material was obtained by interviewing about one hundred students attending an Ulpan. The interview can only be called a mammoth depth interview, covering over 1,000 questions, and one has to admire the fortitude of those subjected to it, as well as that of the interviewers. The topics dealt with by the questions ranged all the way from conception and birth via childhood, adolescence, and maturity before immigration, to the most minute details of present life in Israel. The answers were coded and punched on to cards, some of them being used to construct four indices, including mental health and general adjustment: incidentally, it is by no means clear how the crucial index of mental health was actually arrived at. In particular. the author wrestles with the notoriously slippery concept of mental health and tries to relate it to personal adjustment, of which he distinguishes various forms.
