Abstract

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a syndrome characterized by shortness of breath, fluid retention, and a progressive reduction in cardiac function. More than 60% of the cases are ischemic in origin (i.e., due to myo-cardial infarction) and about 30% are caused by non-ischemic myocardial damage (i.e., due to genetic or non-genetic causes like myocardial inflammation). Because of alterations in both cellular and humoral immunity patients with non-ischemic CHF often develop abnormal or misled immune responses, including cross-reacting antibodies and/or autoantibodies to various cardiac anti-gens. Non-ischemic myo-cardial damage was found to progress to CHF particularly, when associated (a) with the generation of autoantibodies directed against distinct myocyte membrane proteins critically involved in cardiac function - like G-protein coup-led membrane receptors (GPCRs), or (b) with virus persistence in the myocardium. This article will review current knowledge on the pathophysiological relevance of GPCR-autoreactivity in CHF by giving an overview on the so far available evidence from pre-clinical, clinical and epidemiological studies on the CHF-inducing potential of GPCR-autoantibodies and thereon based novel therapeutic approaches in GPCR autoantibody-associated CHF.

Abstract

Parathyroid cysts are a very rare disease entity. Hormone activity is uncommon and they usually present without any clinical symptoms. The differential diagnosis of cystic neck masses should nevertheless include parathyroid cysts as surgical therapy can be very effective. We report the case of a 57-year-old patient presenting to our department with a hormone inactive parathyroid cyst. Final diagnosis was achieved eventually after histological examination of the resected specimen, which is the reason for evaluating the current data for preoperative management of this disease entity in this case report.

Abstract

We present a fully integrated microelectromechanical magnetic field sensor based on the DE effect. The vacuum encapsulated sensor extends our previous approach [B. Gojdka et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 99, 223502 (2011); Nature 480, 155 (2011)] and now involves an intermediate piezoelectric AlN layer between a SiO2 cantilever and a magnetostrictive FeCoBSi top layer. The AlN layer serves two functions: It drives the resonator, and it is used for electrical read out. The limit of detection was strongly enhanced to 12 nT/SRHz at 10 Hz.

Abstract

In this position statement of the ESC Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases an expert consensus group reviews the current knowledge on clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of myocarditis, and proposes new diagnostic criteria for clinically suspected myocarditis and its distinct biopsy-proven pathogenetic forms.
