Quantum error correction (QEC) is a crucial prerequisite for future large-scale quantum computation. Finding and analyzing new QEC codes, along with efficient decoding and fault-tolerance protocols, is central to this effort. Holographic codes are a recent class of QEC subsystem codes derived from holographic bulk/boundary dualities. In addition to exploring the physics of such dualities, these codes possess useful QEC properties such as tunable encoding rates, distance scaling competitive with topological codes, and excellent recovery thresholds. To allow for a comprehensive analysis of holographic code constructions, we introduce LEGO_HQEC, a software package utilizing the quantum LEGO formalism. This package constructs holographic codes on regular hyperbolic tilings and generates their stabilizer generators and logical operators for a specified number of seed codes and layers. Three decoders are included: an erasure decoder based on Gaussian elimination; an integer-optimization decoder; and a tensor-network decoder. With these tools, LEGO_HQEC thus enables future systematic studies regarding the utility of holographic codes for practical quantum computing.

There are increasing efforts to automate clinical methods for early diagnosis of developmental disorders, among them the General Movement Assessment (GMA), a video-based tool to classify infant motor functioning. Optimal pose estimation is a crucial part of the automated GMA. In this study we compare the performance of available generic- and infant-pose estimators, and the choice of viewing angle for optimal recordings, i.e., conventional diagonal view used in GMA vs. top-down view. For this study, we used 4500 annotated video-frames from 75 recordings of infant spontaneous motor functions from 4 to 26 weeks. To determine which available pose estimation method and camera angle yield the best pose estimation accuracy on infants in a GMA related setting, the distance to human annotations as well as the percentage of correct key-points (PCK) were computed and compared. The results show that the best performing generic model trained on adults, ViTPose, also performs best on infants. We see no improvement from using specialized infant-pose estimators over the generic pose estimators on our own infant dataset. However, when retraining a generic model on our data, there is a significant improvement in pose estimation accuracy. The pose estimation accuracy obtained from the top-down view is significantly better than that obtained from the diagonal view, especially for the detection of the hip key-points. The results also indicate only limited generalization capabilities of infant-pose estimators to other infant datasets, which hints that one should be careful when choosing infant pose estimators and using them on infant datasets which they were not trained on. While the standard GMA method uses a diagonal view for assessment, pose estimation accuracy significantly improves using a top-down view. This suggests that a top-down view should be included in recording setups for automated GMA research.

The fast computation of large kernel sums is a challenging task, which arises as a subproblem in any kernel method. We approach the problem by slicing, which relies on random projections to one-dimensional subspaces and fast Fourier summation. We prove bounds for the slicing error and propose a quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) approach for selecting the projections based on spherical quadrature rules. Numerical examples demonstrate that our QMC-slicing approach significantly outperforms existing methods like (QMC-)random Fourier features, orthogonal Fourier features or non-QMC slicing on standard test datasets.

Discrete models of holographic dualities, typically modeled by tensor networks on hyperbolic tilings, produce quantum states with a characteristic quasiperiodic disorder not present in continuum holography. In this work, we study the behavior of XXZ spin chains with such symmetries, showing that lessons learned from previous non-interacting (matchgate) tensor networks generalize to more generic Hamiltonians under holographic disorder: While the disorder breaks translation invariance, site-averaged correlations and entanglement of the disorder-free critical phase are preserved at a plateau of nonzero disorder even at large system sizes. In particular, we show numerically that the entanglement entropy curves in this disordered phase follow the expected scaling of a conformal field theory (CFT) in the continuum limit. This property is shown to be non-generic for other types of quasiperiodic disorder, only appearing when our boundary disorder ansatz is described by a "dual" bulk hyperbolic tiling. Our results therefore suggest the existence of a whole class of critical phases whose symmetries are derived from models of discrete holography., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We propose an extension of the reinforcement learning architecture that enables moral decision-making of reinforcement learning agents based on normative reasons. Central to this approach is a reason-based shield generator yielding a moral shield that binds the agent to actions that conform with recognized normative reasons so that our overall architecture restricts the agent to actions that are (internally) morally justified. This paper examines the impact of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on the capacity of distribution feeders and transformers within the electric grid at California State University Northridge (CSUN). With the increasing adoption of both residential and commercial EVs and the rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure, it is critical to evaluate the potential overloading effects of intensive EV charging on power distribution systems. This research assesses the impact of EV charging on the operation of CSUN's electric grid, identifying potential overload risks under projected EV adoption scenarios. Detailed simulations and analyses are conducted to quantify the extent of these impacts, focusing on various levels of EV penetration and charging patterns. The study also explores the impact of distributed generation on reducing the stress incurred by EV loads. The findings provide essential insights for utility companies, highlighting the need for strategic upgrades to distribution systems. These insights will help in developing robust strategies for both current operations and future planning to accommodate growing EV charging demands, ensuring grid stability and reliability in the face of increasing electrification of the transportation sector. Several recent techniques for modifying topological codes with single-qubit Clifford operators have shown high resilience against pure Pauli noise. Paramount to these findings has been the demonstration that several variants exhibit error thresholds often attaining or exceeding the zero-rate hashing bound, a known benchmark for code-capacity noise channels, for biased noise. Additionally, direct comparison with the hashing bound has shown that several topological codes outperform the hashing bound at points of finite Pauli noise biases. Motivated by these observations, we study zero-rate holographic quantum error correction codes, discovering very high threshold values under diverse and finitely-biased noise channels using a tensor-network decoding approach. Our results establish that all codes tested achieve or surpass the hashing bound at various points, ranging from pure 2-Pauli noise ($\eta = 0$) to pure 1-Pauli noise ($\eta = +\infty$), thereby demonstrating that holographic codes exhibit excellent error tolerance in the code-capacity picture. Such findings imply the existence of a structured and systematic method for constructing high-threshold codes suitable for realistically motivated noise channels. We introduce a new class of qubit codes that we call Evenbly codes, building on a previous proposal of hyperinvariant tensor networks. Its tensor network description consists of local, non-perfect tensors describing CSS codes interspersed with Hadamard gates, placed on a hyperbolic $\{p,q\}$ geometry with even $q\geq 4$, yielding an infinitely large class of subsystem codes. We construct an example for a $\{5,4\}$ manifold and describe strategies of logical gauge fixing that lead to different rates $k/n$ and distances $d$, which we calculate analytically, finding distances which range from $d=2$ to $d \sim n^{2/3}$ in the ungauged case. Investigating threshold performance under erasure, depolarizing, and pure Pauli noise channels, we find that the code exhibits a depolarizing noise threshold of about $19.1\%$ in the code-capacity model and $50\%$ for pure Pauli and erasure channels under suitable gauges. We also test a constant-rate version with $k/n = 0.125$, finding excellent error resilience (about $40\%$) under the erasure channel. Recovery rates for these and other settings are studied both under an optimal decoder as well as a more efficient but non-optimal greedy decoder. We also consider generalizations beyond the CSS tensor construction, compute error rates and thresholds for other hyperbolic geometries, and discuss the relationship to holographic bulk/boundary dualities. This study compares and analyses publication and document types in the following bibliographic databases: OpenAlex, Scopus, Web of Science, Semantic Scholar and PubMed. The results demonstrate that typologies can differ considerably between individual database providers. Moreover, the distinction between research and non-research texts, which is required to identify relevant documents for bibliometric analysis, can vary depending on the data source because publications are classified differently in the respective databases. The focus of this study, in addition to the cross-database comparison, is primarily on the coverage and analysis of the publication and document types contained in OpenAlex, as OpenAlex is becoming increasingly important as a free alternative to established proprietary providers for bibliometric analyses at libraries and universities.

There is a recent boom in the development of AI solutions to facilitate and enhance diagnostic procedures for established clinical tools. To assess the integrity of the developing nervous system, the Prechtl general movement assessment (GMA) is recognized for its clinical value in diagnosing neurological impairments in early infancy. GMA has been increasingly augmented through machine learning approaches intending to scale-up its application, circumvent costs in the training of human assessors and further standardize classification of spontaneous motor patterns. Available deep learning tools, all of which are based on single sensor modalities, are however still considerably inferior to that of well-trained human assessors. These approaches are hardly comparable as all models are designed, trained and evaluated on proprietary/silo-data sets. With this study we propose a sensor fusion approach for assessing fidgety movements (FMs) comparing three different sensor modalities (pressure, inertial, and visual sensors). Various combinations and two sensor fusion approaches (late and early fusion) for infant movement classification were tested to evaluate whether a multi-sensor system outperforms single modality assessments. The performance of the three-sensor fusion (classification accuracy of 94.5\%) was significantly higher than that of any single modality evaluated, suggesting the sensor fusion approach is a promising avenue for automated classification of infant motor patterns. The development of a robust sensor fusion system may significantly enhance AI-based early recognition of neurofunctions, ultimately facilitating automated early detection of neurodevelopmental conditions.

Cardiac valve event timing plays a crucial role when conducting clinical measurements using echocardiography. However, established automated approaches are limited by the need of external electrocardiogram sensors, and manual measurements often rely on timing from different cardiac cycles. Recent methods have applied deep learning to cardiac timing, but they have mainly been restricted to only detecting two key time points, namely end-diastole (ED) and end-systole (ES). In this work, we propose a deep learning approach that leverages triplane recordings to enhance detection of valve events in echocardiography. Our method demonstrates improved performance detecting six different events, including valve events conventionally associated with ED and ES. Of all events, we achieve an average absolute frame difference (aFD) of maximum 1.4 frames (29 ms) for start of diastasis, down to 0.6 frames (12 ms) for mitral valve opening when performing a ten-fold cross-validation with test splits on triplane data from 240 patients. On an external independent test consisting of apical long-axis data from 180 other patients, the worst performing event detection had an aFD of 1.8 (30 ms). The ongoing controversy surrounding transformative agreements, which aim to transition subscription-based journal publishing to full open access, highlights the need for large-scale studies assessing the impact of these agreements on hybrid open access. By combining multiple open data sources, including cOAlition S Journal Checker, Crossref, and OpenAlex, this study presents a novel approach that analyses over 700 agreements. Results suggest a strong growth in open access, from 4.3% in 2018 to 15% in 2022. Over five years, 11,189 hybrid journals provided open access to 742,369 out of 8,146,958 articles (9.1%). Authors who could make use of transformative agreements contributed 328,957 open access articles (44%) during this period, reaching a peak in 2022 with 143,615 out of 249,511 open access articles (58%). While this trend was predominantly driven by the three commercial publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley, open access uptake varied substantially across journals, publishers, disciplines, and countries. Particularly, the OECD and BRICS areas revealed different publication trends. Multifidelity models integrate data from multiple sources to produce a single approximator for the underlying process. Dense low-fidelity samples are used to reduce interpolation error, while sparse high-fidelity samples are used to compensate for bias or noise in the low-fidelity samples. Deep Gaussian processes (GPs) are attractive for multifidelity modelling as they are non-parametric, robust to overfitting, perform well for small datasets, and, critically, can capture nonlinear and input-dependent relationships between data of different fidelities. Many datasets naturally contain gradient data, especially when they are generated by computational models that are compatible with automatic differentiation or have adjoint solutions. Principally, this work extends deep GPs to incorporate gradient data. We demonstrate this method on an analytical test problem and a realistic partial differential equation problem, where we predict the aerodynamic coefficients of a hypersonic flight vehicle over a range of flight conditions and geometries. In both examples, the gradient-enhanced deep GP outperforms a gradient-enhanced linear GP model and their non-gradient-enhanced counterparts.

In recent years, new regularization methods based on (deep) neural networks have shown very promising empirical performance for the numerical solution of ill-posed problems, e.g., in medical imaging and imaging science. Due to the nonlinearity of neural networks, these methods often lack satisfactory theoretical justification. In this work, we rigorously discuss the convergence of a successful unsupervised approach that utilizes untrained convolutional neural networks to represent solutions to linear ill-posed problems. Untrained neural networks are particularly appealing for many applications because they do not require paired training data. The regularization property of the approach relies solely on the architecture of the neural network instead. Due to the vast over-parameterization of the employed neural network, suitable early stopping is essential for the success of the method. We establish that the classical discrepancy principle is an adequate method for early stopping of two-layer untrained convolutional neural networks learned by gradient descent, and furthermore, it yields an approximation with minimax optimal convergence rates. Numerical results are also presented to illustrate the theoretical findings.

The realization of semiconductor structures with stable excitons at room temperature is crucial for the development of excitonics and polaritonics. Quantum confinement has commonly been employed for enhancing excitonic effects in semiconductor heterostructures. Dielectric confinement, which is potentially much stronger, has proven to be more difficult to achieve because of the rapid nonradiative surface/interface recombination in hybrid dielectric-semiconductor structures. Here, we demonstrate intense excitonic emission from bare GaN nanowires with diameters down to 6 nm. The large dielectric mismatch between the nanowires and vacuum greatly enhances the Coulomb interaction, with the thinnest nanowires showing the strongest dielectric confinement and the highest radiative efficiency at room temperature. In situ monitoring of the fabrication of these structures allows one to accurately control the degree of dielectric enhancement. OpenAlex is a promising open source of scholarly metadata, and competitor to established proprietary sources, such as the Web of Science and Scopus. As OpenAlex provides its data freely and openly, it permits researchers to perform bibliometric studies that can be reproduced in the community without licensing barriers. However, as OpenAlex is a rapidly evolving source and the data contained within is expanding and also quickly changing, the question naturally arises as to the trustworthiness of its data. In this report, we will study the reference coverage and selected metadata within each database and compare them with each other to help address this open question in bibliometrics. In our large-scale study, we demonstrate that, when restricted to a cleaned dataset of 16.8 million recent publications shared by all three databases, OpenAlex has average source reference numbers and internal coverage rates comparable to both Web of Science and Scopus. We further analyse the metadata in OpenAlex, the Web of Science and Scopus by journal, finding a similarity in the distribution of source reference counts in the Web of Science and Scopus as compared to OpenAlex. We also demonstrate that the comparison of other core metadata covered by OpenAlex shows mixed results when broken down by journal, capturing more ORCID identifiers, fewer abstracts and a similar number of Open Access status indicators per article when compared to both the Web of Science and Scopus., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

This paper discusses the error and cost aspects of ill-posed integral equations when given discrete noisy point evaluations on a fine grid. Standard solution methods usually employ discretization schemes that are directly induced by the measurement points. Thus, they may scale unfavorably with the number of evaluation points, which can result in computational inefficiency. To address this issue, we propose an algorithm that achieves the same level of accuracy while significantly reducing computational costs. Our approach involves an initial averaging procedure to sparsify the underlying grid. To keep the exposition simple, we focus only on one-dimensional ill-posed integral equations that have sufficient smoothness. The rise of micro/nanooptics and lab-on-chip devices demands the fabrication of three-dimensional structures with decent resolution. Here, we demonstrate the combination of grayscale electron beam lithography and direct forming methodology to fabricate antimony sulfide structures with free form for the first time. The refractive index of the electron beam patterned structure was calculated based on an optimization algorithm that is combined with genetic algorithm and transfer matrix method. By adopting electron irradiation with variable doses, 4-level Fresnel Zone Plates and metalens were produced and characterized.
