Abstract

Hydrogen bonding interactions between biological chromophores and their surrounding protein and solvent environment significantly affect the photochemical pathways of the chromophore and its biological function. A common first step in the dynamics of these systems is excited state proton transfer between the non-covalently bound molecules, which stabilises the system against dissociation and principally alters relaxation pathways. Despite such fundamental importance, studying excited state proton transfer across a hydrogen bond has proven difficult, leaving uncertainties about the mechanism. Through time-resolved photoelectron imaging measurements we demonstrate how the addition of a single hydrogen bond and the opening of an excited state proton transfer channel dramatically changes the outcome of a photochemical reaction, from rapid dissociation in the isolated chromophore, to efficient stabilisation and ground state recovery in the hydrogen bonded case, and uncover the mechanism of excited state proton transfer at a hydrogen bond, which follows sequential hydrogen and charge transfer processes.

Abstract

Chemical reactivity of the superheavy elements nihonium (Nh, element 113) and moscovium (Mc, element 115) has been studied by the gas-solid chromatography method using a new combined chromatography and detection setup. The Mc isotope 288 Mc, was produced in the nuclear fusion reaction of 48Ca ions with 243Am targets at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt, Germany. After isolating 288Mc ions in the gas-filled separator TASCA, adsorption of 288Mc and its decay product 284Nh on silicon oxide and gold surfaces was investigated. As a result of this work, the values of the adsorption enthalpy of Nh and Mc on the silicon oxide surface were determined for the first time,(Mc) = 54+51 kJ/mol and -AHSdO2 (Nh) = 58+8 kJ/mol (68% c.i.). The obtained ^Hads values are in good agreement with results of advanced relativistic calculations. Both elements, Nh and Mc, were shown to interact more weakly with the silicon oxide surface than their lighter homologues Tl and Bi, respectively. However, Nh and Mc turned out to be more reactive than the neighbouring closed-shell and quasi-closed-shell elements copernicium (Cn, element 112) and flerovium (Fl, element 114), respectively. The established trend is explained by the influence of strong relativistic effects on the valence atomic orbitals of these elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Korteweg-de Vries equation has a central place in a model for waves on shallow water and it is an example of the propagation of weakly dispersive and weakly nonlinear waves. Its history spans a period of about sixty years, starting with experiments of Scott Russell in 1834, followed by theoretical investigations of, among others, Lord Rayleigh and Boussinesq in 1871 and, finally, Korteweg and De Vries in 1895. In this essay we compare the work of Boussinesq and Korteweg-de Vries, stressing essential differences and some interesting connections. Although there exist a number of articles, reviewing the origin and birth of the Korteweg-de Vries equations, connections and differences, not generally known, are reported., Comment: minor corrections; 25 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Ylösmäki et al. develop an oncolytic adenovirus expressing immunostimulatory cytokines OX40L and CD40L. This virus was tested in a peptide-based cancer vaccine platform called PeptiCRAd. Intratumoral administration of PeptiCRAd induced systemic and intratumoral tumor-specific T cell responses, reduced tumor growth, and sensitized tumors to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

Abstract

The electron-capture decay followed by a prompt fission process was searched for in the hitherto unknown most neutron-deficient Md isotope with mass number 244. Alpha decay with α-particle energies of 8.73-8.86 MeV and with a half-life of 0.30-0.09+0.19 s was assigned to Md244. No fission event with a similar half-life potentially originating from spontaneous fissioning of the short-lived electron-capture decay daughter Fm244 was observed, which results in an upper limit of 0.14 for the electron-capture branching of Md244. Two groups of fission events with half-lives of 0.9-0.3+0.6 ms and 5-2+3 ms were observed. The 0.9-0.3+0.6 ms activity was assigned to originate from the decay of Md245. The origin of eight fission events resulting in a half-life of 5-2+3 ms could not be unambiguously identified within the present data while the possible explanation has to invoke previously unseen physics cases.

Item does not contain fulltext, Anticancer drug delivery strategies are designed to take advantage of the differential chemical environment in solid tumors independently, or to high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or to low pH, compared to healthy tissue. Here, the design and thorough characterization of two functionalizable "AND gate" multiresponsive (MR) block amphiphilic copolymers are reported, aimed to take full advantage of the coexistence of two chemical cues-ROS and low pH-present in the tumor microenvironment. The hydrophobic blocks contain masked pH-responsive side chains, which are exposed exclusively in response to ROS. Hence, the hydrophobic polymer side chains will undergo a charge shift in a very relevant pH window present in the extracellular milieu in most solid tumors (pH 5.6-7.2) after demasking by ROS. Doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded nanosized "AND gate" MR polymersomes (MRPs) are fabricated via microfluidic self-assembly. Chemical characterization reveals ROS-dependent pH sensitivity and accelerated DOX release under influence of both ROS and low pH. Treatment of tumor-bearing mice with DOX-loaded nonresponsive and "AND gate" MRPs dramatically decreases cardiac toxicity. The most optimal "AND gate" MRPs outperform free DOX in terms of tumor growth inhibition and survival, shedding light on chemical requirements for successful cancer nanomedicine.

Abstract

The heaviest currently known nuclei, which have up to 118 protons, have been produced in Ca48 induced reactions with actinide targets. Among them, the element tennessine (Ts), which has 117 protons, has been synthesized by fusing Ca48 with the radioactive target Bk249, which has a half-life of 327 d. The experiment was performed at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Two long and two short α decay chains were observed. The long chains were attributed to the decay of Ts294. The possible origin of the short-decay chains is discussed in comparison with the known experimental data. They are found to fit with the decay chain patterns attributed to Ts293. The present experimental results confirm the previous findings at the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator on the decay chains originating from the nuclei assigned to Ts.

Abstract

Research was conducted to examine the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of a pentacoordinated intermediate-spin (S = 3/2) iron(III) complex with a macrocyclic (N4)2- ligand. X-ray crystallography, EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopy, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and molecular orbital measurements were used. Results illustrate a complete picture of bonding modes, intramolecular interactions and the electronic structure around the iron center.

Abstract

International audience; Our knowledge of human brain evolution primarily relies on the interpretation of palaeoneurological evidence. Endocasts (i.e., replica of the internal table of the bony brain case) constitute a proxy for reconstructing a timeline and mode of cerebral changes in the fossil record. The identification of cerebral imprints is critical for assessing the topographic extension and structural organisation of cortical areas. Describing these crucial landmarks in fossil endocasts is challenging due to the fragmentary nature of fossil specimens. Recent introduction of high-resolution imaging techniques in (palaeo)neurology offers new opportunities for tracking detailed endocranial neural characteristics. In this context, this study aims to provide an atlas that documents variation in the extant human endocranial sulcal patterns for subsequent use as a comparative platform for the study of the fossil record. Dry human crania from the Pretoria Bone Collection were scanned using micro-CT at Necsa, Pelindaba (South Africa). Endocasts were virtually extracted using Endex software. Sulci were automatically detected and manually labelled using a programme created with MATLAB. Finally, a probability map was created by projecting all the labelled sulci on an average endocast and calculating the average displacement of each identified sulcus. In providing an innovative, non-invasive, observer-independent method to investigate human endocranial structural organisation, our analytical protocol introduces a promising perspective for discussing long-standing questions in palaeoneurology.

Abstract

The occurrence of a late-Triassic intrusive event caused the granites of Penang Island, Malaysia, to feature varying of Rb-Sr, K-Ar and fission track isotopic readings. The distortion was due to the mixing of older isochrons with younger ones containing high levels of (87/86)Sr. Chronological assessment of the granites required the use of other radiometric methods to determine the accuracy of the dating method. In addition, rock formations around the island exhibited similar isotopic concentrations.

Abstract

The superheavy element with atomic number Z=117 was produced as an evaporation residue in the (48)Ca+(249)Bk fusion reaction at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt, Germany. The radioactive decay of evaporation residues and their α-decay products was studied using a detection setup that allowed measuring decays of single atomic nuclei with half-lives between sub-μs and a few days. Two decay chains comprising seven α decays and a spontaneous fission each were identified and are assigned to the isotope (294)117 and its decay products. A hitherto unknown α-decay branch in (270)Db (Z = 105) was observed, which populated the new isotope (266)Lr (Z = 103). The identification of the long-lived (T(1/2) = 1.0(-0.4)(+1.9) h) α-emitter (270)Db marks an important step towards the observation of even more long-lived nuclei of superheavy elements located on an "island of stability."
