5. Development of an electrochemical reactor with rotating anode for fast and ultra-deep catalytic desulfurization of diesel: experimental and modeling.

Abstract

A novel electrochemical reactor with a rotating anode attached to its end with four baskets as catalysts holders is proposed for deep desulfurization of diesel fuel. In this reactor two experimentally prepared catalysts of (5% manganese oxide (MnO2)/modified activated carbon (MAC) and 5% iron oxide (Fe2O3)/MAC) were used for an efficient desulfurization process. This design is characterized by conducting two functions at the same time, which are to agitate the reaction mixture and to move the catalyst over all areas of the reaction vessel. Several experiments were conducted at different operating conditions such as voltage, reaction time, and agitating speed. Results showed that the proposed basket reactor is excellent and highly effective in removing dibenzothiophene (DBT) in diesel. The removal efficiency of sulfur compounds is significantly improved by enhancing reaction times, stirring speed, and cell voltage up to 3 volts and drops at higher than 3 volts. At all operating conditions, the 5% Fe2O3/MAC catalyst showed higher performance than the 5% MnO2/MAC catalyst. This result can be attributed to the high reactivity of Fe2O3/MAC toward DBT removal and its magnetic activity which could enhance the oxidation reaction. Under the best operating conditions, the removal efficiencies reached 98.8%, and 93.1% for 5% Fe2O3/MAC and 5% MnO2/MAC, respectively. A model for the proposed reactor was also developed using an artificial neural network (ANN) software. The modeling data displayed an excellent agreement between the experimental and predicted data. Abstract

Now days essential & very significant concept under process technology & chemical engineering has been 'process Intensification' that is being used to deliberately integrate different phenomenon or operations. The chemicals has been utilized under system are assumes such that each molecule is provided with the same processing experience thus yielding increased productivity due to high selectivity. Micro-reactor technology (MRT) has been part regards process intensification for minimizing equipment size, energy reduction & waste production. MRT under association with cavitations opens up a whole range of possibilities. The current investigation also deals with the study of the preparation of per acetic acid (PAA) & Performed acid (PFA). The formation of PAA & PFA was studied in a batch reactor undercurrent of ultrasonic irradiations using Amberlite IR-120H catalyst. Reaction mechanism of synthesis & hydrolysis of both compounds was also studied. The rate of intrinsic reaction constants & equilibrium constant were estimated through validated data. 13. A study of zinc separation from an alkaline leach liquor using fixed and moving bed ion exchange systems

Abstract

As far as it is known from the survey of literature this is the first study of the problem of Zn separation from NaOH solution through ion exchange. It was therefore essential to carry out a selection procedure for finding a suitable resin for the separation. Ten resins were tested from which Amberlite IRC-718 was selected. The resin was found to tolerate the high pH involving the process and give a favourable equilibrium relationship for 0.1 and 0.2M NaOH solutions. Work concerning fixed and moving bed processes was done to determine various design parameters such as mass transfer coefficients, zone height, number and height of transfer units. The kinetics of ion exchange was studied through fixed bed operation by obtaining breakthrough data. These data were analysed through a new method and also by the methods of Michaels,and Moisan and O'Hern. For some data the methods of Michaels, and Maison and O'Hern were found to be inadequate while the new method was applicable to all the data. The kinetics of ion exchange was found to be controlled by diffusion of ions in the solution. This was also confirmed by the determination of activation energy which gave a value of 1.6 kcal/mole. Correlations for saturation time, zone height and zone velocity were established. The extraction efficiency of 99.6% was achieved using a moving bed system with bed height of 24cm and solution flow rate of 7 ml/min. The height of transfer units was found to increase with Zn and OH ions concentration, solution flow rate, and cycle time. However, HTU was unaffected by bed height increase. Correlation of HTU with Zn concentration was established.
