Abstract Interleukin 12 (IL-12) is a potent immunostimulatory cytokine mainly produced by antigen-presenting cells (e.g., dendritic cells, macrophages) and plays an important role in innate and adaptive immunity against cancers. Therapies that can synergistically modulate innate immunity and stimulate adaptive anti-tumor responses are of great interest for cancer immunotherapy. Here we investigated the lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated self-replicating RNA (srRNA) encoding IL-12 (referred to as JCXH-211) for the treatment of cancers. Both local (intratumoral) and systemic (intravenous) administration of JCXH-211 in tumor-bearing mice induced a high-level expression of IL-12 in tumor tissues, leading to modulation of tumor microenvironment and systemic activation of antitumor immunity. Particularly, JCXH-211 can inhibit the tumor-infiltration of polymorphonuclear myeloid-derived suppressor cells (PMN-MDSCs). When combined with anti-PD1 antibody, it was able to enhance the recruitment of T cells and NK cells into tumors. In multiple mouse solid tumor models, intravenous injection of JCXH-211 not only eradicated large preestablished tumors, but also induced protective immune memory that prevented the growth of rechallenged tumors. Finally, intravenous injection of JCXH-211 did not cause noticeable systemic toxicity in tumor-bearing mice and non-human primates. Thus, our study demonstrated the feasibility of intravenous administration of JCXH-211 for the treatment of advanced cancers.

Abstract The tissue‐specific heart decellularized extracellular matrix (hdECM) demonstrates a variety of therapeutic advantages, including fibrosis reduction and angiogenesis. Consequently, recent research for myocardial infarction (MI) therapy has utilized hdECM with various delivery techniques, such as injection or patch implantation. In this study, a novel approach for hdECM delivery using a wet adhesive paintable hydrogel is proposed. The hdECM‐containing paintable hydrogel (pdHA_t) is simply applied, with no theoretical limit to the size or shape, making it highly beneficial for scale‐up. Additionally, pdHA_t exhibits robust adhesion to the epicardium, with a minimal swelling ratio and sufficient adhesion strength for MI treatment when applied to the rat MI model. Moreover, the adhesiveness of pdHA_t can be easily washed off to prevent undesired adhesion with nearby organs, such as the rib cages and lungs, which can result in stenosis. During the 28 days of in vivo analysis, the pdHA_t not only facilitates functional regeneration by reducing ventricular wall thinning but also promotes neo‐vascularization in the MI region. In conclusion, the pdHA_t presents a promising strategy for MI treatment and cardiac tissue regeneration, offering the potential for improved patient outcomes and enhanced cardiac function post‐MI.

Abstract A novel bio adsorbent was fabricated from turmeric, polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose for MB dye removal. The physicochemical, antibacterial and biodegradable nature of the film was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, universal testing machine, water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, agar disc diffusion method and soil degradability. The inclusion of turmeric into PVA/CMC film improves the biodegradability, antibacterial activity and thermomechanical property of the films. PVA/CMC/TUR film displayed good MB adsorption capacity (qe: 6.27 mg/g) and maximum dye adsorption (R%; 83%) and was achieved at initial dye concentration of 10 mg/L with contact time 170 min at room temperature. The adsorption data of MB on PVA/CMC/TUR film was evaluated using four models Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and D-R isotherms. The different kinetic of adsorption (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion model) was also applied for adsorption of MB on the films. The experimental result suggests that PVA/CMC/TUR films are an alternate cheap adsorbent for water treatment.

Abstract Background Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a pathogen that causes chickenpox and shingles in humans. Different types of the varicella vaccines derived from the Oka and MAV/06 strains are commercially available worldwide. Although the MAV/06 vaccine was introduced in 1990s, little was known about immunological characteristics. Results Here, we evaluated B and T cell immune response in animals inoculated with the Oka and MAV/06 vaccines as well as a new formulation of the MAV/06 vaccine. A variety of test methods were applied to evaluate T and B cell immune response. Plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and fluorescent antibody to membrane antigen (FAMA) assay were conducted to measure the MAV/06 vaccine-induced antibody activity against various VZVs. Glycoprotein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (gpELISA) was used to compare the degree of the antibody responses induced by the two available commercial VZV vaccines and the MAV/06 vaccine. Interferon-gamma enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot (IFN-γ ELISpot) assays and cytokine bead array (CBA) assays were conducted to investigate T cell immune responses. Antibodies induced by MAV/06 vaccination showed immunogenicity against a variety of varicella-zoster virus and cross-reactivity among the virus clades. Conclusions It is indicating the similarity of the antibody responses induced by commercial varicella vaccines and the MAV/06 vaccine. Moreover, VZV-specific T cell immune response from MAV/06 vaccination was increased via Th1 cell response. MAV/06 varicella vaccine induced both humoral and cellular immune response via Th1 cell mediated response.

Abstract Background In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of health problems among college students in China, the lack of adequate physical exercise is the major reason. This study aimed to investigate methods to promote exercise behavior and cardiovascular fitness among college students based on the motivation theory. Methods Cardiovascular fitness levels of 641 college students (20.72 ± 1.41 years old) were measured. Exercise motivation was assessed using the physical exercise motivation scale and physical exercise rating scale. Correlation analysis, regression analysis, and structural equation models were used to assess exercise motivation, exercise behavior, and cardiovascular fitness. Energy relationships were determined to develop a path model that promotes exercise behavior and aerobic fitness among college students. Results The exercise motivation of college students was directly related to cardiovascular fitness (effect value: 0.577) or indirectly related through the mediating effect of exercise behavior (effect value: 0.215). Quasiparticle (QP) effects play a significant role in the coherence and fidelity of superconducting quantum circuits. The Andreev bound states of high-transparency Josephson junctions can act as low-energy traps for QPs, providing a mechanism for studying the dynamics and properties of both the QPs and the junction. Using locally injected and thermal QPs, we study QP loss and QP poisoning in epitaxial Al-InAs Josephson junctions incorporated in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) galvanically shorting a superconducting resonator to ground. We observe changes in the resonance line shape and frequency shifts consistent with QP trapping into and clearing out of the ABSs of the junctions when the junctions are phase biased. By monitoring the QP trapping and clearing mechanisms in time, we find a time scale of O(1μs) for these QP dynamics, consistent with the presence of phonon-mediated QP-QP interactions. Our measurements suggest that electron-phonon interactions play a significant role in the relaxation mechanisms of our system, while electron-photon interactions and electron-phonon interactions govern the clearing mechanisms. Our results highlight the QP-induced dissipation and complex QP dynamics in superconducting quantum circuits fabricated on superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures.

The Contention-Free (CF) policy has been extensively researched in the realm of real-time multi-processor scheduling due to its wide applicability and the performance enhancement benefits it provides to existing scheduling algorithms. The CF policy improves the feasibility of executing other real-time tasks by assigning the lowest priority to a task at a moment when it is guaranteed not to miss its deadline during the remaining execution time. Despite its effectiveness, existing studies on the CF policy are largely confined to preemptive scheduling, leaving the efficiency and applicability of limited preemption scheduling unexplored. Limited preemption scheduling permits a job to execute to completion with a limited number of preemptions, setting it apart from preemptive scheduling. This type of scheduling is crucial when preemption or migration overheads are either excessively large or unpredictable. In this paper, we introduce SP-CF, a single preemption scheduling approach that incorporates the CF policy. SP-CF allows a preemption only once during each job’s execution, following a priority demotion under the CF policy. We also propose a new schedulability analysis method for SP-CF to determine whether each task is executed in a timely manner and without missing its deadline. Through simulation experiments, we demonstrate that SP-CF can significantly enhance the schedulability of the traditional rate-monotonic algorithm and the earliest deadline first algorithm.

Two emerging trends for designing a complex, cyber-physical systems are the component-based and mixed-criticality (MC) approaches. A component-based approach independently develops individual components and subsequently integrates them to reduce system complexity. This approach provides strong isolation among components but incurs resource inefficiency. Alternatively, an MC approach integrates components of different criticality with different levels of guarantee for resource efficiency, while components are not isolated. To leverage MC and component-based approaches, we investigate how to balance component isolation and resource efficiency under component-based MC systems. We introduce the concept of component-MC schedulability, where isolated tasks are protected from external events outside the component, and shared tasks may be suspended for the critical events of other components. Under component-MC schedulability, we propose a component-based mixed-criticality scheduling framework with dynamic resource allocation (CMC-DRA), which suspends low-criticality tasks differently depending on internal or external component behavior. We also develop scheduling semantics and analyze the schedulability for CMC-DRA. Through simulation on synthetic workloads, we demonstrate that CMC-DRA has up to 88.3% higher schedulability than existing approaches and reduces the deadline miss ratio by up to 47.7%.

Abstract The development of lithium (Li)-metal anode is high priority research to initiate next-generation Li batteries. Applying Li-metal in practical applications as anode still has many hurdles to clear away, such as low Coulombic efficiency and capacity degradation by the continuous formation of dead Li. We demonstrate that cobalt (Co) nanoparticle incorporation in a porous carbon host anode can play a critical role in the formation of a thick lithium fluoride dominated solid-electrolyte interphase in ether-based electrolyte. As a result, the host anode containing Co nanoparticles shows excellent electrochemical performance with high Li-metal reversible capacity and even stable long-term cyclability with no dead Li formation.

Reprogramming scar fibroblasts into new heart muscle cells has the potential to restore function to the injured heart. However, the effectiveness of reprogramming is notably low. We have recently demonstrated that the effectiveness of reprogramming fibroblasts into heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) is increased by the addition of RNA-sensing receptor ligands. Clinical use of these ligands is problematic due to their ability to induce adverse inflammatory events. To overcome this issue, we sought to determine whether synthetic analogs of natural RNA-sensing receptor ligands, which avoid generating inflammatory insults and are nuclease resistant, would similarly enhance fibroblast reprogramming into cardiomyocytes. Indeed, one such stabilized RNA, ICR2, increased the expression of cardiomyocyte-specific mRNAs in reprogrammed fibroblasts. Moreover, ICR2 enhanced the ability of reprogramming factors to produce cardiomyocytes with mature sarcomeres. Knockdown assays indicated that the effects of ICR2 were mediated by the RNA-sensing receptors Rig-I and TLR3. In addition, ICR2 reduced the effective dose and number of reprogramming factors needed for efficient reprogramming. In summary, the synthetic RNA oligonucleotide ICR2 is a potential therapeutic agent to enhance cardiac reprogramming efficiency.

This paper presents a practical low-power, low-frequency magnetic induction (MI) transceiver based on symmetrical gaped two-loop antennas with an empirical circuit model for wireless underground communication. Because of the quasi-two-dimensional loop antennas for the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx), the tailored hardware platform is not only simple, but can be readily extended to a mutually orthogonal 3-D scheme. Through a mixed model of actual measurement data and theoretical parameters, we developed the two-loop antenna with the space of the antenna radius optimized for energy efficiency. The Tx power almost doubles that of the single Tx one, which provides channel expansion as well as system stability in terms of the Tx current level. Accordingly, the Rx signal is considerably increased by 9.5 dB in contrast with a typical single-Tx single-Rx configuration. Moreover, we used empirical-based modeling for a reliable electrical model. The empirical mutual inductance, which was modeled in a 25 m corridor, resulted in a channel correction factor of 0.86, showing that the signal intensity was reduced by 14% in the underground corridor compared to the free space. A maximum range of 68 m under a SNR of 9.5 dB and a path loss of 100.7 dB on a load of $50~\Omega $ at 34.5 dBm were predicted from the model. In addition, this study confirmed the system feasibility by a SNR of 8.7 dB in a practical lossy environment between two floors, where its value was converted into a MI channel at a distance of 70 m in the underground corridor.

Radio reception relies on the medium which determines the propagation characteristics of the electromagnetic fields carrying the information. The permittivity varies greatly depending on the medium, but it remains nearly constant, except when magnetic materials are used. For this reason, magnetic fields, typically affected by permeability, can be utilized in microwave challenging environments. In this paper, a new approach based on the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect is presented. The proposed GMI-based receiver has an effective double-superheterodyne topology, where “effective” means that the receiver actually has a single mixer but appears to have added a virtual mixer due to the GMI effect. The magnetic field-to-voltage conversion ratio (MVCR), the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) and the receiver sensitivity are characterized, and from these results the optimal operating conditions of the fabricated receiver are obtained. Additionally, wireless digital communication using on-off keying (OOK) is demonstrated and transmitted and received waveforms are compared, with the final demodulation result of the receiver showing that the transmitted digital data are precisely extracted.

Component-based design has received considerable attention owing to its advantages in terms of security and safety when developing modern embedded systems. To effectively allocate computing resources to components in these systems, real-time component-based scheduling theory has been studied from various perspectives. The main advantage of component-based scheduling theory is that it guarantees the schedulability of an independent component and composability of multiple components. However, the existing component scheduling theory cannot be directly applied to real hardware platform due to an impractical assumption that resource allocation must be conducted across the continuum of real numbers, whereas actual operating systems (or virtualization systems) allocate resources in units of scheduling time quantum. In this study, we proposed a new efficient resource allocation and supply mechanism for quantumized hardware platforms while using real-number-based component interface. In simulation results with randomly-generated workloads, our approach reduced the overhead of existing approaches by up to 97.1% in an individual component. In composition of multiple components, our approach has up to 0.41 better acceptance ratio than existing approaches.

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials such as graphene, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), tungsten disulfide (WSe2), and black phosphorus (BP) provide unique opportunities to identify the origin of current fluctuation, mainly arising from their large surface areas compared with those of their bulk counterparts. Among numerous material characterization techniques, nondestructive low-frequency (LF) noise measurement has received significant attention as an ideal tool to identify a dominant scattering origin such as imperfect crystallinity, phonon vibration, interlayer resistance, the Schottky barrier inhomogeneity, and traps and/or defects inside the materials and dielectrics. Despite the benefits of LF noise analysis, however, the large amount of time-resolved current data and the subsequent data fitting process required generally cause difficulty in interpreting LF noise data, thereby limiting its availability and feasibility, particularly for 2D layered van der Waals hetero-structures. Here, we present several model algorithms, which enables the classification of important device information such as the type of channel materials, gate dielectrics, contact metals, and the presence of chemical and electron beam doping using more than 100 LF noise data sets under 32 conditions. Furthermore, we provide insights about the device performance by quantifying the interface trap density and Coulomb scattering parameters. Consequently, the pre-processed 2D array of Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, converted from the LF noise data of devices undergoing the test, leads to superior efficiency and accuracy compared with that of previous approaches.

This article presents a new application field of a giant magneto-impedance (GMI) sensor. It shows valuable findings for the GMI sensor on the possibility of a new receiving element in magnetic field communication. The proposed GMI sensors serve as antennas and mixers in receiver systems. They have the advantage of being easily implemented and in terms of mass production and manufacturing processes due to the manufacture base on a printed circuit board (PCB). Their smaller size, lower cost, and higher sensitivity have more advantages than conventional magnetic sensors, such as the magneto-inductive, anisotropic magneto-resistive, and giant magneto-resistive sensors. Two types of PCB-based GMI sensors are proposed. The first type of GMI sensor is directly wound around the solenoid-shaped pickup coil onto an alumina insulation tube inserted with an amorphous microwire. The second type of GMI sensor has a patterned pickup coil that does not require the winding of the coil, similar to the patterned pickup coil of a micro electro-mechanical system-based GMI sensor. This GMI sensor provides a new geometry that can be easily manufactured with two PCB substrates. The proposed GMI sensors achieve the equivalent magnetic noise spectral density to the high-sensitivity characteristics of the pT/√Hz level. The equivalent magnetic noise spectral density of 1.5 pT/√Hz at 20.03 MHz is obtained for the first type of GMI sensor, and 3 pT/√Hz at 3.03 MHz is achieved the second type. The analyzed results of the bandwidth and the channel capacity for the two types of GMI sensors are acceptable. This first analysis confirms the possibility of the implementation of GMI sensors in magnetic field communication. The results of this experiment confirm the high performance of the proposed GMI sensors and their applicability in magnetic field communication. The detailed experimental results of the proposed GMI sensors are presented and discussed.

Every wind turbine is subject to fluctuations in power generation, depending on climatic conditions. When electricity supply exceeds demand, wind turbines are forced to implement curtailment, causing a reduction in generation efficiency and commercial loss to turbine owners. Since the frequency and amount of curtailment of wind turbines increases as the amount of renewable energy become higher on Jeju Island in South Korea, Jeju is configuring a Power to Gas (P2G) water-electrolysis system that will be connected to an existing wind farm to use the “wasted energy”. In this study, economic analysis was performed by calculating the production cost of green hydrogen, and sensitivity analysis evaluated the variance in hydrogen cost, depending on several influential factors. Approaches to lower hydrogen costs are necessary for the following reasons. The operating company needs a periodical update of hydrogen sale prices by reflecting a change in the system margin price (SMP) with the highest sensitivity to hydrogen cost. Technical development to reduce hydrogen costs in order to reduce power consumption for producing hydrogen and a decrease in annual reduction rate for the efficiency of water electrolysis is recommended. Discussions and research regarding government policy can be followed to lower the hydrogen cost.

Early successes in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic have prevented Republic of Korea from implementing a prompt, large-scale vaccine rollout to the public. The influence of traditional media on public opinion remains critical and substantial in Republic of Korea, and there have been heated debates about vaccination in traditional media reports in Korea. Effective and efficient public health communication is integral in managing public health challenges. This study explored media reports on the COVID-19 vaccines during the pandemic in Republic of Korea. 12,399 media news reports from May 2020 to September 2021 were collected. An LDA topic model was applied in order to analyze and compare the topics drawn from each study phase using words from the unstructured text data. Although media reports from before the national vaccination implementation focused on the development and rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, diverse topics were reported without any overlap. After the vaccination rollout, the biggest concern was the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine. In sum, Republic of Korea’s major media outlets reported on diverse topics rather than generating a common discourse about topics related to COVID-19 vaccination.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ankle taping intervention on postural stability in elite Judo players. A total of twenty-two elite Judo players participated in this study. For biomechanical evaluation of postural stability, all participants performed postural standing tasks including narrow, normal, and wide stance conditions with both taping and non-taping conditions, respectively. Ground reaction forces and the center of pressure (COP) were obtained from the force plate. COP data for 30-s duration were analyzed to assess postural stability by measuring 95% confidence ellipse sway area (COPSWAY), COP velocity (COPVEL), and approximate entropy (ApEn). Significant differences were found in COPSWAY (p = 0.025) and COPVEL (p = 0.041) in the narrow stance, but no differences in normal and wide stances were observed between taping and non-taping conditions. For ApEn in the anteroposterior (AP) direction, significant differences were identified in normal (p = 0.026) and wide (p = 0.014) stances, but in the mediolateral direction there were no significant differences in all stances between taping and non-taping conditions. This study suggests that ankle taping that is purported to increase ankle stability may ironically negatively affect posture maintenance in Judo players. Our study suggests that the purpose of ankle taping should be reconsidered and associated individual objective data should be first analyzed before tape application.

Bio adsorbents have received tremendous attention due to their eco-friendly, cheap and non-toxic nature. Recently, bio-adsorbent-based membranes have been frequently employed for water treatment. The work reports the preparation of a novel adsorbent membrane from hierarchical zeolite, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose and agar. The fabricated membrane was characterized spectroscopically and microscopically with several techniques such as XRD, UTM, TGA, optical microscopy and FT-IR, as well as contact-angle studies. The result showed that the hierarchical-zeolite-loaded membrane is superior in terms of thermal stability, mechanical properties and surface roughness. The fabricated membrane was investigated for its efficiency in the removal of Congo red dye in aqueous conditions. The influence of pH, temperature, contact period and the initial concentration of dye and zeolite loading on the adsorption process are also explored. The adsorption results highlighted the maximum sorption property of Congo red on agar/zeolite/carboxymethyl cellulose/polymer biomembrane was found to be higher (15.30 mg/g) than that of zeolite powder (6.4 mg/g). The adsorption isotherms and kinetic parameters were investigated via Langmuir, Freundlich and pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and the intraparticle diffusion model, respectively. The adsorption isotherms fitted well for both considered isotherms, whereas pseudo-second order fitted well for kinetics. The thermodynamic parameter, ΔG at 303 K, 313 K and 323 K was −9.12, −3.16 and −0.49 KJ/mol, respectively. The work further explores the antibacterial efficacy of the prepared membrane and its reusability.

Although dye removal from wastewater streams has been investigated via several approaches using adsorbents, resins, or membranes, it is still hard to avoid the fact that dyes are persistently left in the adsorption materials or washing solutions used to regenerate the used adsorbents. In particular, given that cleaning agents are composed of acid/base, organic solvents, or electrolytes, dye adsorption and adsorbent regeneration processes leave behind more hard-to-manage wastewater containing dyes. In this study, we demonstrated that cold plasma (CP) treatment, which is one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), can be used for zero discharge of dyes and regeneration of a washing solution in a membrane-based dye removal process. Specifically, CP treatment was found to successfully remove dyes released from a washing process to regenerate a used membrane, thereby effectively recycling a cleaning solution. As a result, the regenerated washing solution was more favorable for the adsorbed dyes’ elution, leading to the successful regeneration of a used membrane without a significant loss of dye removal efficiency. This fact was evidenced by a comparative study on the effect of CP treatment on the reusability of membranes and washing solutions and the kinetic analysis of the AOP of the desorbed dyes. We hope that this study contributes to opening a new door for environmentally friendly and sustainable dye removal.

Objective We aimed to present the radiographic and functional outcomes of anatomical reduction and fixation of anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) avulsion fracture without syndesmotic screw fixation in rotational ankle fracture. Methods We retrospectively reviewed 66 consecutive patients with displaced malleolar fracture combined with AITFL avulsion fracture. We performed reduction and fixation for the AITFL avulsion fracture when syndesmotic instability was present after malleolar fracture fixation. A syndesmotic screw was inserted only when residual syndesmotic instability was present even after AITFL avulsion fracture fixation. The radiographic parameters were compared with those of the contralateral uninjured ankles. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scores were assessed 1 year postoperatively. Results Fifty-four patients showed syndesmotic instability after malleolar fracture fixation and underwent reduction and fixation for AITFL avulsion fracture. Among them, 45 (83.3%) patients achieved syndesmotic stability, while 9 (16.7%) patients with residual syndesmotic instability needed additional syndesmotic screw fixation. The postoperative radiographic parameters were not significantly different from those of the uninjured ankles. The mean AOFAS score was 94. Conclusion Reduction and fixation of AITFL avulsion fracture obviated the need for syndesmotic screw fixation in more than 80% of patients with AITFL avulsion fracture and syndesmotic instability.

The interference between software components is increasing in safety-critical domains, such as autonomous driving. Low-criticality (LC) tasks, such as vehicle communication, may control high-criticality (HC) tasks, such as acceleration. In such cases, the LC task should also be considered as an HC task because the HC tasks relies on the LC task. However, the difficulty in guaranteeing these LC tasks is the catastrophic cost of computing resources, the electronic control unit in the domain of vehicles, required for every task. In this paper, we theoretically and practically provide safety-guaranteed and inexpensive scheduling for LC tasks by borrowing the computational power of neighbored systems in distributed systems, obviating the need for additional hardware components. As a result, our approach extended the schedulability of LC tasks without violating the HC tasks. Based on the deadline test, the compatibility of our approach with the task-level MC scheduler was higher than that of the system-level MC scheduler, such that the task-level had all dropped LC tasks recovered while the system-level only had 25.5% recovery. Conversely, from the worst-case measurement of violated HC tasks, the HC tasks were violated by the task-level MC scheduler more often than by the system-level MC scheduler, with 70.3% and 15.4% average response time overhead, respectively. In conclusion, under the condition that the HC task ratio has lower than 47% of the overall task systems at 80% of total utilization, the task-level approach with task migration has extensively higher sustainability on LC tasks.

Many researchers have examined the desalination performance of various kinds of two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets prepared by top-down approaches such as forming pores on the plain based on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In contrast, it is rare to find MD simulations addressing the desalination performance of a 2D porous nanosheet prepared by bottom-up approaches. We investigated the desalination performance of a 2D porous nanosheet prepared by the assembly of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) via MD simulation. The model 2D CB[6] nanosheet features CB[6] with the carbonyl-fringed portals of 3.9 Å and the interstitial space filled with hydrophobic linkers and dangling side chains. Our MD simulation demonstrated that the 2D porous CB[6] nanosheet possesses a 70 to 140 times higher water permeance than commercial reverse osmosis membranes while effectively preventing salt passage. The extremely high water permeance and perfect salt rejection stem from not only CB[6]’s nature (hydrophilicity, negative charge, and the right dimension for size exclusion) but also the hydrophobic and tightly filled interstitial space. We also double-checked that the extremely high water permeance was attributable to only CB[6]’s nature, not water leakage, by contrasting it with a 2D nanosheet comprising CB[6]-spermine complexes. Lastly, this paper provides a discussion on a better cucurbituril homologue to prepare a next-generation desalination membrane possessing great potential to such an extent to surpass the 2D porous CB[6] nanosheet based on quantum mechanics calculations.

Abstract Silicon (Si) based materials are highly desirable to replace currently used graphite anode for lithium ion batteries. Nevertheless, its usage is still a big challenge due to poor battery performance and scale-up issue. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) architectures, which remain unresolved so far, would give them more interesting and unexpected properties. Herein, we report a facile, cost-effective, and scalable approach to synthesize Si nanocrystals embedded 2D SiO x nanofoils for next-generation lithium ion batteries through a solution-evaporation-induced interfacial sol-gel reaction of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO1.5, HSQ). The unique nature of the thus-prepared centimeter scale 2D nanofoil with a large surface area enables ultrafast Li+ insertion and extraction, with a reversible capacity of more than 650 mAh g−1, even at a high current density of 50 C (50 A g−1). Moreover, the 2D nanostructured Si/SiO x nanofoils show excellent cycling performance up to 200 cycles and maintain their initial dimensional stability. This superior performance stems from the peculiar nanoarchitecture of 2D Si/SiO x nanofoils, which provides short diffusion paths for lithium ions and abundant free space to effectively accommodate the huge volume changes of Si during cycling.

Tailing is defined as an event where a suspicious person follows someone closely. We define the problem of tailing detection from videos as an anomaly detection problem, where the goal is to find abnormalities in the walking pattern of the pedestrians (victim and follower). We, therefore, propose a modified Time-Series Vision Transformer (TSViT), a method for anomaly detection in video, specifically for tailing detection with a small dataset. We introduce an effective way to train TSViT with a small dataset by regularizing the prediction model. To do so, we first encode the spatial information of the pedestrians into 2D patterns and then pass them as tokens to the TSViT. Through a series of experiments, we show that the tailing detection on a small dataset using TSViT outperforms popular CNN-based architectures, as the CNN architectures tend to overfit with a small dataset of time-series images. We also show that when using time-series images, the performance of CNN-based architecture gradually drops, as the network depth is increased, to increase its capacity. On the other hand, a decreasing number of heads in Vision Transformer architecture shows good performance on time-series images, and the performance is further increased as the input resolution of the images is increased. Experimental results demonstrate that the TSViT performs better than the handcrafted rule-based method and CNN-based method for tailing detection. TSViT can be used in many applications for video anomaly detection, even with a small dataset.

Since the specific energy consumption (SEC) required for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination has been steeply reduced over the past few decades, there is an increasing demand for high-selectivity membranes. However, it is still hard to find research papers empirically dealing with increasing the salt rejection of RO membranes and addressing the SEC change possibly occurring while increasing salt rejection. Herein, we examined the feasibility of the process and material approaches to increase the salt rejection of RO membranes from the perspective of the SEC and weighed up a better approach to increase salt rejection between the two approaches. A process approach was confirmed to have some inherent limitations in terms of the trade-off between water permeability and salt rejection. Furthermore, a process approach is inappropriate to alter the intrinsic salt permeability of RO membranes, such that it should be far from a fundamental improvement in the selectivity of RO membranes. Thus, we could conclude that a material approach is necessary to make a fundamental improvement in the selectivity of RO membranes. This paper also provides discussion on the specific demands for RO membranes featuring superior mechanical properties and excellent water/salt permselectivity to minimize membrane compaction while maximizing the selectivity.

Various pollutants of different sizes are directly (e.g., water-borne diseases) and indirectly (e.g., accumulation via trophic transfer) threatening our water health and safety. To cope with this matter, multifaceted approaches are required for advanced wastewater treatment more efficiently. Wastewater treatment using mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) could provide an excellent alternative since it could play two roles in pollutant removal by covering adsorption and size exclusion of water contaminants simultaneously. This paper provides an overview of the research progresses and trends on the emerging materials used to prepare MMMs for pollutant removal from water in the recent five years. The transition of the research trend was investigated, and the most preferred materials to prepare MMMs were weighed up based on the research trend. Various application examples where each emerging material was used have been introduced along with specific mechanisms underlying how the better performance was realized. Lastly, the perspective section addresses how to further improve the removal efficiency of pollutants in an aqueous phase, where we could find a niche to spot new materials to develop environmentally friendly MMMs, and where we could further apply MMMs.

The process of data mining with differential privacy produces results that are affected by two types of noise: sampling noise due to data collection and privacy noise that is designed to prevent the reconstruction of sensitive information. In this paper, we consider the problem of designing confidence intervals for the parameters of a variety of differentially private machine learning models. The algorithms can provide confidence intervals that satisfy differential privacy (as well as the more recently proposed concentrated differential privacy) and can be used with existing differentially private mechanisms that train models using objective perturbation and output perturbation.

Statistics computed from data are viewed as random variables. When they are used for tasks like hypothesis testing and confidence intervals, their true finite sample distributions are often replaced by approximating distributions that are easier to work with (for example, the Gaussian, which results from using approximations justified by the Central Limit Theorem). When data are perturbed by differential privacy, the approximating distributions also need to be modified. Prior work provided various competing methods for creating such approximating distributions with little formal justification beyond the fact that they worked well empirically. In this paper, we study the question of how to generate statistical approximating distributions for differentially private statistics, provide finite sample guarantees for the quality of the approximations.

In this study, we fabricated a nanoporous oxide layer by anodization to improve corrosion resistance of type 304 stainless steel (SS) gas tungsten arc weld (GTAW). Subsequent heat treatment was performed to eliminate any existing fluorine in the nanoporous oxide layer. Uniform structures and compositions were analyzed with field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) measurements. The corrosion resistance of the treated SS was evaluated by applying a potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Surface morphologies of welded SS with and without treatment were examined to compare their corrosion behaviors. All results indicate that corrosion resistance was enhanced, making the treatment process highly promising.

Federated learning is a learning method that collects only learned models on a server to ensure data privacy. This method does not collect data on the server but instead proceeds with data directly from distributed clients. Because federated learning clients often have limited communication bandwidth, communication between servers and clients should be optimized to improve performance. Federated learning clients often use Wi-Fi and have to communicate in unstable network environments. However, as existing federated learning aggregation algorithms transmit and receive a large amount of weights, accuracy is significantly reduced in unstable network environments. In this study, we propose the algorithm using particle swarm optimization algorithm instead of FedAvg, which updates the global model by collecting weights of learned models that were mainly used in federated learning. The algorithm is named as federated particle swarm optimization (FedPSO), and we increase its robustness in unstable network environments by transmitting score values rather than large weights. Thus, we propose a FedPSO, a global model update algorithm with improved network communication performance, by changing the form of the data that clients transmit to servers. This study showed that applying FedPSO significantly reduced the amount of data used in network communication and improved the accuracy of the global model by an average of 9.47%. Moreover, it showed an improvement in loss of accuracy by approximately 4% in experiments on an unstable network.

A gellan gum (GG) hydrogel must demonstrate a number of critical qualities—low viscosity, degradability, desirable mechanical properties, anti-swelling properties, and biocompatibility—in order to be regarded as suitable for retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) regeneration. In this study, we investigated whether the application of an eggshell membrane (ESM) to a GG hydrogel improved these critical attributes. The crosslinking of the ESM/GG hydrogels was most effectively reduced, when a 4 w/v% ESM was used, leading to a 40% less viscosity and a 30% higher degradation efficiency than a pure GG hydrogel. The compressive moduli of the ESM/GG hydrogels were maintained, as the smaller pores formed by the addition of the ESM compensated for the slightly weakened mechanical properties of the ESM/GG hydrogels. Meanwhile, due to the relatively low hydrophilicity of ESM, a 4 w/v% ESM enabled an ESM/GG hydrogel to swell 30% less than a pure GG hydrogel. Finally, the similarity in components between the ESM and RPE cells facilitated the proliferation of the latter without any significant cytotoxicity.

A facile route to producing non-stoichiometric silicon suboxide nanoparticles (SiOx NPs, 0 < x < 1) with an adjustable oxygen content is proposed. The process is based on electrochemical anodization involving the application of a strong electric field near the surface of a Si electrode to directly convert the Si electrode into SiOx NPs. The difference in ion mobility between oxygen species (O2− and OH−), formed during anodization, causes the production of non-stoichiometric SiOx on the surface of the Si while, simultaneously, fluoride ions in the electrolyte solution etch the formed SiOx layer, generating NPs under the intense electric field. The adjustment of the applied voltage and anodization temperature alters the oxygen content and the size of the SiOx NPs, respectively, allowing the characteristics of the NPs to be readily controlled. The proposed approach can be applied for mass production of SiOx NPs and is highly promising in the field of batteries and optoelectronics.

Despite significant improvements in injury prevention and emergency response, injury-related death and morbidity continues to increase in the US and worldwide. Patients with trauma, invasive operations, anti-cancer treatment, and organ transplantation produce a host of danger signals and high levels of pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic mediators, such as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs). DAMPs (e.g., nucleic acids, histone, high-mobility group box 1 protein, and S100) are molecules released from injured, stressed, or activated cells that act as endogenous ligands of innate immune receptors, whereas EVs (e.g., microparticle and exosome) are membranous vesicles budding off from plasma membranes and act as messengers between cells. DAMPs and EVs can stimulate multiple innate immune signaling pathways and coagulation cascades, and uncontrolled DAMP and EV production causes systemic inflammatory and thrombotic complications and secondary organ failure (SOF). Thus, DAMPs and EVs represent potential therapeutic targets and diagnostic biomarkers for SOF. High plasma levels of DAMPs and EVs have been positively correlated with mortality and morbidity of patients or animals with trauma or surgical insults. Blocking or neutralizing DAMPs using antibodies or small molecules has been demonstrated to ameliorate sepsis and SOF in animal models. Furthermore, a membrane immobilized with nucleic acid-binding polymers captured and removed multiple DAMPs and EVs from extracellular fluids, thereby preventing the onset of DAMP- and EV-induced inflammatory and thrombotic complications in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we will summarize the current state of knowledge of DAMPs, EVs, and SOF and discuss potential therapeutics and preventive intervention for organ failure secondary to trauma, surgery, anti-cancer therapy, and allogeneic transplantation.

The past decade has been especially creative for nanogenerators as energy harvesting devices utilizing both piezoelectric and triboelectric properties. Most recently, self-charging power units using both nanogenerators and energy storage systems have begun to be investigated for portable and wearable electronics to be used in our daily lives. This review focuses on these hybrid devices with self-charging combined with energy harvesting storage systems based on the most recent reports. In this research update, we will describe the materials, device structures, integration, applications, and research progress up to the present on hybrid devices.

Hard real-time systems are employed in military, aeronautics, and astronautics fields where deployed systems are susceptible to software faults that can result in functional errors. Thus, there is a need to use fault-tolerant (FT) real-time scheduling. Among the various fault-tolerant real-time scheduling techniques, re-execution has been applied widely to existing real-time systems owing to its simplicity and applicability. However, re-execution requires multiple executions of every task, and some tasks miss their deadlines owing to the prolonged execution time; therefore, it has been found to be suitable for only soft real-time systems. In this paper, we propose an FT policy that can be incorporated into most (if not all) existing real-time scheduling algorithms on multiprocessor systems, which improves the reliability of the target system without a tradeoff against schedulability. As a case study, we apply the FT policy to existing fixed-priority scheduling and earliest deadline zero-laxity scheduling, and we demonstrate that it enhances reliability without schedulability loss.

We present a simple, accurate open-circuit sensitivity model based on both analytically calculated lumped and empirically extracted lumped-parameters that enables a capacitive acoustic sensor to be efficiently characterized in the frequency domain at the wafer level. Our mixed model is mainly composed of two key strategies: the approximately linearized electric-field method (ALEM) and the open- and short-calibration method (OSCM). Analytical ALEM can separate the intrinsic capacitance from the capacitance of the acoustic sensor itself, while empirical OSCM, on the basis of one additional test sample excluding the membrane, can extract the capacitance value of the active part from the entire sensor chip. FEM simulation verified the validity of the model within an error range of 2% in the unit cell. Dynamic open-circuit sensitivity is modelled from lumped parameters based on the equivalent electrical circuit, leading to a modelled resonance frequency under a bias condition. Thus, eliminating a complex read-out integrated circuit (ROIC) integration process, this mixed model not only simplifies the characterization process, but also improves the accuracy of the sensitivity because it considers the fringing field effect between the diaphragm and each etching hole in the back plate.

Equivalent circuit-based analytical open-circuit sensitivity modelling of a capacitive-type MEMS acoustic sensor for Internet of things (IoT) application is presented. It can not only evaluate simply the characteristic of the sensitivity on wafer level, but also improve the accuracy of the sensitivity due to including the fringing field between the diaphragm and each etching hole in the back-plate. The effective capacitor model is obtained by applying the approximately linearized electric-field method (ALEM), resulting in the equivalent circuit-based dynamic model. From the sensor with a 325 µm-radius diaphragm, the effective radius and the effective residual stress of the diaphragm were extracted to be 299 µm and +23.0 MPa, respectively. With the pull-in voltage of. 12.0 V and the pad capacitance of 0.23 pF; the open-circuit sensitivity was modelled to 11.3 mV/Pa at 1 kHz in the bias of 10 V.

We present the development process of a prototype CCD imaging system which is being built at Korea Astronomy Observatory(KA() for astronomical applications. The CCD imaging system requires very low noise and high stability characteristics and is widely used for astronomical purposes form infrared to ultraviolet wavelength regions. However its system design, particularly for the controller design technique, as heart of the system, is not secured in Korea so far. The prototype electronics developed in this study consists of a single chip controller which was implemented in an EPLD(Erasable Programmable Logic Device) and an analog driver, a video processor with a LN2 cooling cryostat. A PC system was employed to control the whole system and to store the image data considering compatibility of the system. We have successfully obtained the first image in the laboratory with the prototype of this imaging system, and an image of the M15 at Sobaeksan Astronomy Observatory.

Continuous strip casting (CSC) has been developed to fabricate thin metal plates while simultaneously controlling the microstructure of the product. A numerical analysis to understand the solid-liquid interface behaviors during CSC was carried out and used to identify the solidification morphologies of the plate, which were then used to obtain the optimum process conditions. In this study, we used a modified level contour reconstruction method and the sharp-interface method to modify the interface tracking, and we performed a simulation analysis to identify the differences in the material properties that affect the interface behavior. The effects of the process parameters such as the heat transfer coefficient and extrusion velocity on the behavior of the solid-liquid interface are estimated and also used to improve the CSC process.

Antibodies to DNA (anti-DNA) are the serological hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and can mediate disease pathogenesis by the formation of immune complexes. Since blocking immune complex formation can attenuate disease manifestations, the effects of nucleic acid binding polymers (NABPs) on anti-DNA binding in vitro were investigated. The compounds tested included polyamidoamine dendrimer, 1,4-diaminobutane core, generation 3.0 (PAMAM-G3), hexadimethrine bromide, and a β-cylodextrin-containing polycation. As shown with plasma from patients with SLE, NABPs can inhibit anti-DNA antibody binding in ELISA assays. The inhibition was specific since the NABPs did not affect binding to tetanus toxoid or the Sm protein, another lupus autoantigen. Furthermore, the polymers could displace antibody from preformed complexes. Together, these results indicate that NABPs can inhibit the formation of immune complexes and may represent a new approach to treatment.
