The service life of elastomer components is often determined by their abrasion resistance. As a consequence, the wear behaviour of elastomer compounds is already studied during an early stage of their development. In order to be able to carry out explorative wear measurements without requiring large amounts of material, a wear tester for small elastomer sheets was developed. The wear is induced by three rigidly mounted steel balls which glide in a circular track on the elastomer surface. The morphology of the wear scar indicates that the wear is caused by fatigue. The “three ball abrader”, a DIN abrader and a LAT100 were used to compare the wear resistance of several elastomer compounds, ranging from laboratory samples to compounds optimized for the use in tire treads. The “three ball abrader” was able to differentiate between groups with different wear resistance in a similar manner as the LAT100 did. The highest correlation was found when the results of the “three ball abrader” were compared with the LAT100 results which were obtained under “high severity” loading, The service life of elastomer components is often determined by their abrasion resistance. Biomimetic synthetic rubber with properties similar to those of natural rubber (NR) has been developed taking the requirements of a technical realization into account. Strain induced crystallization in unfilled „BISYKA rubber“ sets in at slightly higher elongation compared to NR but leads to a higher relative degree of crystallinity D C,relat large strains. A standard truck tread compound containing BISYKA rubber instead of NR shows similar performance in lab tests towards crystallinity and abrasion.
