Abstract Macaque restricts hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection because its receptor homologue, NTCP (mNTCP), cannot bind preS1 on viral surface. To reveal how mNTCP loses the viral receptor function, we here solve the cryo-electron microscopy structure of mNTCP. Superposing on the human NTCP (hNTCP)-preS1 complex structure shows that Arg158 of mNTCP causes steric clash to prevent preS1 from embedding onto the bile acid tunnel of NTCP. Cell-based mutation analysis confirms that only Gly158 permitted preS1 binding, in contrast to robust bile acid transport among mutations. As the second determinant, Asn86 on the extracellular surface of mNTCP shows less capacity to restrain preS1 from dynamic fluctuation than Lys86 of hNTCP, resulting in unstable preS1 binding. Additionally, presence of long-chain conjugated-bile acids in the tunnel induces steric hindrance with preS1 through their tailed-chain. This study presents structural basis in which multiple sites in mNTCP constitute a molecular barrier to strictly restrict HBV.

Abstract Neutrophils are critical mediators of both the initiation and resolution of inflammation after myocardial infarction (MI). Overexuberant neutrophil signaling after MI exacerbates cardiomyocyte apoptosis and cardiac remodeling while neutrophil apoptosis at the injury site promotes macrophage polarization toward a pro-resolving phenotype. Here, we describe a nanoparticle that provides spatiotemporal control over neutrophil fate to both stymie MI pathogenesis and promote healing. Intravenous injection of roscovitine/catalase-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles after MI leads to nanoparticle uptake by circulating neutrophils migrating to the infarcted heart. Activated neutrophils at the infarcted heart generate reactive oxygen species, triggering intracellular release of roscovitine, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, from the nanoparticles, thereby inducing neutrophil apoptosis. Timely apoptosis of activated neutrophils at the infarcted heart limits neutrophil-driven inflammation, promotes macrophage polarization toward a pro-resolving phenotype, and preserves heart function. Modulating neutrophil fate to tune both inflammatory and reparatory processes may be an effective strategy to treat MI.

Environmental factors are crucial elements that significantly influence the growth and development of plants. This study investigated the impact of environmental conditions (light, air temperature, air humidity, etc.) on the early growth of juvenile Korean fir (Abies koreana E.H.Wilson). Using random forest models and scatterplot matrix analyses, we examined the complex relationships between juvenile Korean fir early survival and various environmental factors. Specifically, a one-way ANOVA was conducted to assess the impact of light regulation in shading experiments on the growth of Korean fir seedlings. Additionally, a t-test was performed to compare the growth differences of Korean fir seedlings in two restoration sites with different canopy coverages. The results confirmed that light conditions significantly affect the growth of Korean fir seedlings, with better early growth observed in shaded conditions compared to full sunlight. Furthermore, field restoration site surveys indicated that the growth of height and root collar diameter of restored Korean fir seedlings was better in areas where the canopy coverage of the existing forest was between 60% and 75%. These findings suggest that the prerequisite for the restoration of the endangered Korean fir seedlings is the achievement of optimal light conditions during the early establishment phase.

Abstract Background Myocardial infarction (MI), a representative form of ischemic heart disease, remains a huge burden worldwide. This study aimed to explore whether extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted from hyaluronic acid (HA)-primed induced mesenchymal stem cells (HA-iMSC-EVs) could enhance the cardiac repair after MI. Results HA-iMSC-EVs showed typical characteristics for EVs such as morphology, size, and marker proteins expression. Compared with iMSC-EVs, HA-iMSC-EVs showed enhanced tube formation and survival against oxidative stress in endothelial cells, while reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in cardiomyocytes. In THP-1 macrophages, both types of EVs markedly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory signaling players, whereas HA-iMSC-EVs were more potent in augmenting anti-inflammatory markers. A significant decrease of inflammasome proteins was observed in HA-iMSC-EV-treated THP-1. Further, phospho-SMAD2 as well as fibrosis markers in TGF-β1-stimulated cardiomyocytes were reduced in HA-iMSC-EVs treatment. Proteomic data showed that HA-iMSC-EVs were enriched with multiple pathways including immunity, extracellular matrix organization, angiogenesis, and cell cycle. The localization of HA-iMSC-EVs in myocardium was confirmed after delivery by either intravenous or intramyocardial route, with the latter increased intensity. Echocardiography revealed that intramyocardial HA-iMSC-EVs injections improved cardiac function and reduced adverse cardiac remodeling and necrotic size in MI heart. Histologically, MI hearts receiving HA-iMSC-EVs had increased capillary density and viable myocardium, while showed reduced fibrosis. Conclusions Our results suggest that HA-iMSC-EVs improve cardiac function by augmenting vessel growth, while reducing ROS generation, inflammation, and fibrosis in MI heart. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Engineered human cardiac tissues have been utilized for various biomedical applications, including drug testing, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine. However, the applications of cardiac tissues derived from human pluripotent stem cells are often limited due to their immaturity and lack of functionality. Therefore, in this study, we establish a perfusable culture system based on in vivo-like heart microenvironments to improve human cardiac tissue fabrication. The integrated culture platform of a microfluidic chip and a three-dimensional heart extracellular matrix enhances human cardiac tissue development and their structural and functional maturation. These tissues are comprised of cardiovascular lineage cells, including cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as vascular endothelial cells. The resultant macroscale human cardiac tissues exhibit improved efficacy in drug testing (small molecules with various levels of arrhythmia risk), disease modeling (Long QT Syndrome and cardiac fibrosis), and regenerative therapy (myocardial infarction treatment). Therefore, our culture system can serve as a highly effective tissue-engineering platform to provide human cardiac tissues for versatile biomedical applications.

A microwave power limiter with an H-type slot structure is proposed as a waveguide structure that blocks high-power microwaves through plasma discharge. At an operating frequency of 5.75 GHz, the electric field is concentrated in the discharging electrode gap; when high power is applied, the plasma limiter discharges, and low power is transmitted. By contrast, when low power is applied, it is transmitted without loss. An H-type resonance structure was used to increase the electric field concentration and selectivity within the waveguide. At 5.75 GHz, the insertion loss of the H-type slot structure was 1.85 dB. The electric field concentration increased to 49492 V/m, and the 3 dB bandwidth was 535 MHz. In addition, the plasma discharge onset level in the xenon gas was lower because of the electrostatic potential. When an electrostatic potential of 300 V was applied, the plasma discharge onset level decreased from 310 to 180 W.

Abstract Hydroxycarboxylic acid receptors (HCAR1, HCAR2, and HCAR3) transduce Gi/o signaling upon biding to molecules such as lactic acid, butyric acid and 3-hydroxyoctanoic acid, which are associated with lipolytic and atherogenic activity, and neuroinflammation. Although many reports have elucidated the function of HCAR2 and its potential as a therapeutic target for treating not only dyslipidemia but also neuroimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, the structural basis of ligand recognition and ligand-induced Gi-coupling remains unclear. Here we report three cryo-EM structures of the human HCAR2–Gi signaling complex, each bound with different ligands: niacin, acipimox or GSK256073. All three agonists are held in a deep pocket lined by residues that are not conserved in HCAR1 and HCAR3. A distinct hairpin loop at the HCAR2 N-terminus and extra-cellular loop 2 (ECL2) completely enclose the ligand. These structures also reveal the agonist-induced conformational changes propagated to the G-protein-coupling interface during activation. Collectively, the structures presented here are expected to help in the design of ligands specific for HCAR2, leading to new drugs for the treatment of various diseases such as dyslipidemia and inflammation.

Abstract Despite recent progress in medical and endovascular therapy, the prognosis for patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) remains poor. In response, various stem cells and growth factors have been assessed for use in therapeutic neovascularization and limb salvage in CLI patients. However, the clinical outcomes of cell-based therapeutic angiogenesis have not provided the promised benefits, reinforcing the need for novel cell-based therapeutic angiogenic strategies to cure untreatable CLI. In the present study, we investigated genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human bone marrow that continuously secrete stromal-derived factor-1α (SDF1α-eMSCs) and demonstrated that intramuscular injection of SDF1α-eMSCs can provide long-term paracrine effects in limb ischemia and effectively contribute to vascular regeneration as well as skeletal muscle repair through increased phosphorylation of ERK and Akt within the SDF1α/CXCR4 axis. These results provide compelling evidence that genetically engineered MSCs with SDF-1α can be an effective strategy for successful limb salvage in limb ischemia.

Abstract Neutrophil granulocytes play key roles in innate immunity and shaping adaptive immune responses. They are attracted by chemokines to sites of infection and tissue damage, where they kill and phagocytose bacteria. The chemokine CXCL8 (also known as interleukin-8, abbreviated IL-8) and its G-protein-coupled receptors CXCR1 and CXCR2 are crucial elements in this process, and also the development of many cancers. These GPCRs have therefore been the target of many drug development campaigns and structural studies. Here, we solve the structure of CXCR1 complexed with CXCL8 and cognate G-proteins using cryo-EM, showing the detailed interactions between the receptor, the chemokine and Gαi protein. Unlike the closely related CXCR2, CXCR1 strongly prefers to bind CXCL8 in its monomeric form. The model shows that steric clashes would form between dimeric CXCL8 and extracellular loop 2 (ECL2) of CXCR1. Consistently, transplanting ECL2 of CXCR2 onto CXCR1 abolishes the selectivity for the monomeric chemokine. Our model and functional analysis of various CXCR1 mutants will assist efforts in structure-based drug design targeting specific CXC chemokine receptor subtypes.

This work presents a high angular resolution radar system operating at 94 GHz, utilizing a 20-channel receiver (RXs) and a single-channel transmitter (TX) in 65-nm CMOS technology. The receiver consists of five subarray chips and each chip has four receiving channels. Among these five receiving chips, the 4 channels of the first chip are continuously sampled for all chirp intervals and the 4 channels of other four receiver chips are sampled in a time interleaved way at their allocated chirp times. The fully sampled channels process the range-Doppler information with coarse angular information of the targets and provide the phase reference to the time-interleaved RX channels. The time-interleaved massive channels are used to obtain range and high-resolution angular information. This approach allows for processing the information from all 20 RX channels using only eight-channel analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), thereby significantly reducing the cost and complexity associated with a radar system comprising massive RX channels with high scalability. The challenges associated with packaging, antenna integration, and LO distribution in W-band for a massive channel radar system are overcome by a high ratio multiplier design to be driven by a low reference frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) waveform and using an on-chip antenna feeder, facilitating low-loss and compact integration. Experimental results demonstrate that the implemented radar system achieves an angular resolution of 1.74°. These results suggest that a sub-1° super-resolution radar can be designed by incorporating multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques.

In recent years, the research on FMCW radar utilizing the mmWave band has gained significant attention, especially in its application to autonomous driving systems. As a potential replacement for lidar, high-resolution studies have been pursued, necessitating large aperture sizes and a considerable number of channels. In this study, high angular resolution is achieved by creating Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (TDM-MIMO) radar system with 6 Tx 8 Rx based on a co-prime array configuration in the W-band. To simplify the interface between the proposed array configuration and the actual chipsets, a 65-nm CMOS process-based single-channel T/Rx chipset with one-to-one aperture coupling to the antenna is employed, minimizing losses, phase deviations, and radiation pattern impacts seen in direct coupling methods using transmission lines in the mmWave band. In addition, the proposed co-prime array exhibits more sidelobe effects, making it challenging to extract actual targets from the angular spectrum. To tackle this, the paper presents the Iterative Peak Component Elimination (IPCE) algorithm, validated through experiments, effectively resolving the issue. The study’s findings contribute to advancing high-resolution radar systems, enhancing target detection and tracking capabilities, particularly in automotive radar applications.

Purpose This study investigated the relationship between increased working hours and suicidal ideation among Korean full-time employees by gender. Methods Participants were employees from 54 companies and local government organizations in Korea, aged 19 to 68, who completed a self-reported questionnaire on sociodemographic factors, daily perceived stress, resilience, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. Of the initial 15,360 respondents, participants who worked less than 40 hours were excluded. The final sample size was 9,326 (5,652 men, 3,674 women). Sociodemographic factors and psychological characteristics of participants with suicidal ideation were analyzed using Student’s t-tests and chi-square tests for continuous and categorical variables, respectively. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were performed using suicidality as the dependent variable respectively for all participants, for male, and female. Furthermore, we used these results to compare differences between men and women associated with regard to long working hours to better understand how long working hours correlate with suicidal ideation; further, we examined the impact of gender on this relationship. Results In univariate analyses, suicidal ideation was associated with increased working hours. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses of sociodemographic and psychological factors found no association between long working hours and suicidal ideation for the participants overall. However, they showed significant differences between men and women, such that long working hours were associated with suicidal ideation in men but were non-significant for women. Conclusion Suicidal ideation is associated with long working hours among Korean male full-time workers, while other factors are more likely to lead to suicidal ideation among female workers. Suicide prevention measures for employees should thus be developed based on gender.

OBJECTIVES We estimated the population prevalence of antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), including unreported infections, through a Korea Seroprevalence Study of Monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Retention and Transmission (K-SEROSMART) in 258 communities throughout Korea. METHODS In August 2022, a survey was conducted among 10,000 household members aged 5 years and older, in households selected through two stage probability random sampling. During face-to-face household interviews, participants self-reported their health status, COVID-19 diagnosis and vaccination history, and general characteristics. Subsequently, participants visited a community health center or medical clinic for blood sampling. Blood samples were analyzed for the presence of antibodies to spike proteins (anti-S) and antibodies to nucleocapsid proteins (anti-N) SARS-CoV-2 proteins using an electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. To estimate the population prevalence, the PROC SURVEYMEANS statistical procedure was employed, with weighting to reflect demographic data from July 2022. RESULTS In total, 9,945 individuals from 5,041 households were surveyed across 258 communities, representing all basic local governments in Korea. The overall population-adjusted prevalence rates of anti-S and anti-N were 97.6% and 57.1%, respectively. Since the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has reported a cumulative incidence of confirmed cases of 37.8% through July 31, 2022, the proportion of unreported infections among all COVID-19 infection was suggested to be 33.9%. CONCLUSIONS The K-SEROSMART represents the first nationwide, community-based seroepidemiologic survey of COVID-19, confirming that most individuals possess antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and that a significant number of unreported cases existed. Furthermore, this study lays the foundation for a surveillance system to continuously monitor transmission at the community level and the response to COVID-19.

Previous studies identified disabilities and unmet healthcare needs, especially those related to primary healthcare, as predictors of ED use. This study examined the relationship between disability, unmet healthcare needs, chronic diseases, and ED visits in South Korea. This study was a cross-sectional study using the Korean Health Panel Survey collected in 2018. A path analysis was used. Our research found a significant association between disability and ED visits mediated by unmet healthcare needs and chronic diseases. Disability had a significant direct effect on unmet healthcare needs (β = .04, P ≤ .001) and chronic diseases (β = .10, P ≤ .001). However, there was no mediating effect of unmet healthcare needs between disability and ED visits. While barriers to access to care among people with disabilities are widely acknowledged, this study suggests that interventions or programs to reduce ED visits should consider the unique healthcare needs of people with disabilities.

Fill dam structures are generally considered safe, but frequent heavy rainfall in recent years due to climate change has increased their risk of collapse. Technologies for the monitoring and safety management of these structures have attracted considerable attention, and methods to utilize technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) for maintenance have been investigated. However, the measurement and communication processes of sensors used in the IoT technology are prone to measurement errors. Moreover, the communication environment and frequency range used by unlicensed operators vary within a country. Technologies for accurate interpretation of measurement results and optimal communication are required to address these issues. In this study, a technology for dam safety management and communication environment optimization was developed using AIoT (AI+IoT), and its field applicability was verified.

Purpose This study aimed to analyze the alcohol use patterns that may influence suicide attempt in employees who have suicidal ideation. Methods The 15,199 participants were classified into three groups according to suicide risk severity. Participant scores on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Korea (AUDIT-K), subscale for drinking amount/frequency (AUDIT-C, items 1–3), subscale for dependence/related problems (AUDIT-D/P, items 4–10), and other sociodemographic and psychiatric scales were analyzed between the groups using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the chi-square test, followed by post hoc analysis using the Bonferroni correction. Results A statistically significant difference between all three groups was observed for AUDIT-D/P scores after post hoc analysis (P < 0.001), indicating an increasing trend for greater suicide risk. This trend was present in both sexes and across all age groups above 30 years old. Conclusion Alcohol dependence/related problems are significantly associated with suicide attempt among employees. Assessing and preventing suicide risk according to these issues may minimize socioeconomic losses due to suicide.

BackgroundMental and psychological health issues are on the rise globally. People with disabilities are at greater risk of poor psychological quality of life especially after covid-19 pandemic. Along with other factors physical activity (PA) may have a significant effect on mental health. This study aims to analyze the difference of PA participation and sitting time among people with and without disabilities and their association with psychological quality of life.MethodsA standard questionnaire was used to collect the data from disabled and non-disabled participants above 15 years of age. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed to yield statistical results.ResultsTotal study sample consisted of 359 participants (67.7% without disability and 32.3% with disability). Participants without disabilities reported a significantly better psychological quality of life (QOL) (Mean score = 68) as compared to the ones with disabilities (Mean score = 61), (p < 0.01). There was significant difference between the sitting time of two groups with longer sitting time among people with disabilities (6.1 h/day) as compared to non-disabled (5.3 h). Optimum level of PA was strongly associated with better psychological quality of life among individuals without disabilities (p = 0.00). Younger age (p = 0.00) and being single (p = 0.01) were significant predictors of poor psychological health among non-disables. Increase in sedentary sitting time was significantly associated with poor psychological quality of life among both groups.ConclusionsTailored health policies to encourage PA and reduce sitting hours should be formulated to improve psychological health with special focus on individuals with disabilities. Future studies with large sample size are recommended to validate the current results and further explore the difference in association of PA and psychological wellbeing in people with and without disabilities.

Background: This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of a community-based primary care program focused on hypertension and diabetes in Korea. Methods: We selected patients and doctors who participated in the community-based primary care program as study subjects from Aug 2015 to Jan 2016. Patients and physicians completed a survey, and medical records were reviewed to obtain information regarding clinical variables. Change in the baseline recognition of diseases, motivation for changing health behavior, medical services utilization, doctor-patient relationship were assessed after participation in the program. Results: Both patients and physicians indicated there was improvement in recognition of disease, motivation for changing health behavior, medical services utilization, and doctor-patient relationship (All of recognition scores were above the median point). Patient health behavior such as exercise, smoking, drinking and diet and clinical variables (blood pressure and blood glucose and cholesterol level) also showed significant improvement. Conclusion: The community-based primary care program was found to be helpful in improving hypertension and diabetes patients’ overall outcomes and their healthcare providers’ behavior.

Background: Recently, the South Korean government has adopted a primary-care-based chronic disease management program as a national task. This study aimed to evaluate this program by focusing on hypertension patients and examine the effect of this program on their health. Methods: Overall, 863 subjects who responded to a survey and 1,716 subjects in administrative data were included. Effects of the program were evaluated based on intermediate outcomes (motivation for self-management, changes in health behavior, medical service utilization, duration of consultation with physicians, and medication compliance) and outcomes (disease management, service satisfaction, and physician–patient relationship, change of blood pressure). Furthermore, we compared study participants’ baseline systolic and diastolic blood pressure with corresponding measurements obtained at examinations conducted at 3 and 6 months after baseline measurements. Results: Patients’ motivation for self-management of hypertension, health behaviors (smoking, drinking, and exercise), regular clinic visit, and medication compliance were improved after participating in the program. Furthermore, patients’ blood pressure levels were decreased while their satisfaction with physician-patient relationships was increased. Conclusion: Primary-care-based chronic disease management program is effective for managing hypertension. Therefore, it is essential to reinforce the role of community-based primary care to improve the health of patients with hypertension.

This work, for the first time to our best knowledge, presents a W-band multi-channel frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system on low-cost FR-4 substrates. A center-fed patch array antenna on an FR-4 substrate can achieve a maximum gain of 10.8 dBi. It is enabled by aperture coupled feeding using an on-chip feeder implemented on a CMOS radar transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx). The proposed radar system consists of one Tx and four Rx channels placed in the back cavity of a microstrip array antenna like an active array antenna system. Additionally, Tx and Rx chipsets include a wideband frequency multiplier with high multiplication ratio of 63, making it easy to distribute reference FMCW waveform synthesized at a very low frequency about 1.25 GHz for 79 GHz output using direct digital synthesis (DDS). Extending the number of channels and implementing various waveforms can be easily accomplished with very good phase noise. The functionality of the proposed radar system on low-cost substrates is confirmed by distance and angle measurements.

Abstract Multiple myeloma (MM) continues to be considered incurable, necessitating new drug discovery. The mitotic kinase T‐LAK cell‐originated protein kinase/PDZ‐binding kinase (TOPK/PBK) is associated with proliferation of tumor cells, maintenance of cancer stem cells, and poor patient prognosis in many cancers. In this report, we demonstrate potent anti‐myeloma effects of the TOPK inhibitor OTS514 for the first time. OTS514 induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis at nanomolar concentrations in a series of human myeloma cell lines (HMCL) and prevents outgrowth of a putative CD138+ stem cell population from MM patient‐derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In bone marrow cells from MM patients, OTS514 treatment exhibited preferential killing of the malignant CD138+ plasma cells compared with the CD138− compartment. In an aggressive mouse xenograft model, OTS964 given orally at 100 mg/kg 5 days per week was well tolerated and reduced tumor size by 48%‐81% compared to control depending on the initial graft size. FOXO3 and its transcriptional targets CDKN1A (p21) and CDKN1B (p27) were elevated and apoptosis was induced with OTS514 treatment of HMCLs. TOPK inhibition also induced loss of FOXM1 and disrupted AKT, p38 MAPK, and NF‐κB signaling. The effects of OTS514 were independent of p53 mutation or deletion status. Combination treatment of HMCLs with OTS514 and lenalidomide produced synergistic effects, providing a rationale for the evaluation of TOPK inhibition in existing myeloma treatment regimens.

Background: Interest in plant-based therapeutic products for treatment of several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is increasing as current RA medications and treatments are either very expensive or ineffective. Purpose: We investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of Elaeocarpus sylvestris extract (ESE) and its therapeutic potential in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in the DBA/1 J mouse model and an in vitro model. Methods: In the in vitro assay, the effects of ESE and a combination of ESE + sulfasalazine (SLZN) on nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokine expression induced by lipopolysaccharide in RAW264.7 cells were confirmed. Furthermore, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and real-time polymerase chain reactions were used to measure levels of RA-related inflammatory cytokines and biomarkers in serum and knee joints to evaluate the changes caused by co-administration of ESE and SLZN in our mouse CIA model. Micro-CT scans of knee joints were analyzed for all groups. Results: ESE and the combination of ESE + SLZN downregulated the expression of lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide and proinflammatory cytokines in RAW264.7 cells. Also, combined ESE and SLZN treatment improved arthritis score, edema volume, and proinflammatory cytokine serum levels compared with the CIA group. In addition, chemokine expression was downregulated compared with the CIA group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that coadministration of ESE and SLZN can improve the efficacy of arthritis treatment with reduced side effects.

An accurate estimation of pipe attributes, pose of pipeline inspection gauge (PIG), and downstream pipeline topology is essential for successful in-line inspection (ILI) of underground compressible gas pipelines. Taking a 3D point cloud of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) or time-of-flight (ToF) camera as the input, in this paper, we present the simultaneous pipe-attribute and PIG-pose estimation (SPPE) approach that estimates the optimal pipe-attribute and PIG-pose parameters to transform a 3D point cloud onto the inner pipe wall surface: major- and minor-axis lengths, roll, pitch, and yaw angles, and 2D deviation from the center of the pipe. Since the 3D point cloud has all spatial information of the inner pipe wall measurements, this estimation problem can be modeled by an optimal transformation matrix estimation problem from a PIG sensor frame to the global pipe frame. The basic idea of our SPPE approach is to decompose this transformation into two sub-transformations: The first transformation is formulated as a non-linear optimization problem whose solution is iteratively updated by the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm (LMA). The second transformation utilizes the gravity vector to calculate the ovality angle between the geometric and navigation pipe frames. The extensive simulation results from our PIG simulator based on the robot operating system (ROS) platform demonstrate that the proposed SPPE can estimate the pipe attributes and PIG pose with excellent accuracy and is also applicable to real-time and post-processing non-destructive testing (NDT) applications thanks to its high computational efficiency.

Background: Health screening is a preventive and cost-effective public health strategy for early detection of diseases. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has decreased health screening participation. The aim of this study was to examine regional differences in health screening participation between before and during COVID-19 pandemic and vulnerabilities of health screening participation in the regional context. Methods: Administrative data from 229 districts consisting of 16 provinces in South Korea and health screening participation rate of each district collected in 2019 and 2020 were included in the study. Data were then analyzed via descriptive statistics and geographically weighted regression (GWR). Results: This study revealed that health screening participation rates decreased in all districts during COVID-19. Regional vulnerabilities contributing to a further reduction in health screening participation rate included COVID-19 concerns, the population of those aged 65+ years and the disabled, lower education level, lower access to healthcare, and the prevalence of chronic disease. GWR analysis showed that different vulnerable factors had different degrees of influence on differences in health screening participation rate. Conclusions: These findings could enhance our understanding of decreased health screening participation due to COVID-19 and suggest that regional vulnerabilities should be considered stringent public health strategies after COVID-19.

In the present study, we investigated the effects of Galla Rhois (GR) on obesity and gene expression. We prepared a GR extract and various solvent fractions and evaluated the degree to which they inhibited adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis in vitro. Among them, the GR ethyl acetate fraction (GE) had the lowest EC50 for adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis and thus was selected for in vivo experiments. We induced obesity in C57BL/6 mice by providing them a high-fat diet (HFD). Then, GE (10–40 mg/kg) or orlistat (positive control, 4 mg/kg) was orally administered daily for six weeks. Background: Despite heterogeneity of older people in suicidal behavior, research identifying characteristics by age groups is scarce. We examined baseline features of older community-dwelling suicidal ideators by dichotomized age groups and the 6-month trajectory of their suicidal ideation along with its related psychopathology. Predictors of suicidal ideation within each group were investigated. Methods: Older community-dwelling suicidal ideators enrolled in the Korean Cohort for the Model Predicting a Suicide and Suicide-related Behavior study were subdivided into the “young-old (65–74 years)” and “old-old (≥75 years)” group. Baseline, 1-, and 6-month assessments were compared. Within each group, multiple regression analysis using rating scales (Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Stress Questionnaire for Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-Short Form, and Social Relationships Scale) was conducted to identify predictors of suicidal ideation measured with the intensity subscale of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) was used to compare changes in suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety between age groups over time, and one-way RM-ANOVA to examine changes within each age group. Results: Among 29 “young-old” and 53 “old-old” ideators, the latter were less likely to be receiving psychiatric treatment (odds ratio [OR] = 4.065) and make suicide attempts (OR = 2.874), whereas the former revealed greater levels of anxiety and stress. Baseline depression and stress in the “young-old” group and the “old-old” group, respectively, predicted the intensity of suicidal ideation at both baseline and 1-month assessments. No significant age group x time interactions on suicidal ideation and depression were found. However, within each age group, both suicidal ideation and depression significantly decreased only during the first month with no further improvement. Conclusion: We speculate cautiously that more attention may need to be paid to the “old-old” ideators in the evaluation of psychiatric issues and for referral to psychiatrists. To decrease suicidal ideation, tailored approaches involving proactive, timely management of depression in the “young-old” and interventions focusing on stress reduction in the “old-old,” would be helpful.

This paper presents 77-GHz CMOS radar transmitter and receiver chips equipped with monopole feeders for use in frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar systems. The on-chip monopole feeder can feed not only the aperture of waveguides but also the slots on planar circuits by simply attaching the chips to a printed circuit board using a low-cost non-conductive epoxy. With the aid of a high ratio multiplier and the proposed on-chip feeder, a radar system can easily be integrated without needing to use precise and expensive millimeter-wave packaging technologies. In order to experimentally confirm this, the chips integrated with waveguides are first measured and a full radar system integrated on the planar circuit is evaluated using the microstrip patch antennas. Finally, with the benefit of compact integration technology, the design of a five-channel 3-D environmental sensing radar for small-unmanned aerial vehicles is presented.

Background: The Korean Cohort for the Model Predicting a Suicide and Suicide-related Behavior (K-COMPASS) study is a prospective, naturalistic, observational cohort study, aiming to identify predictors of suicide attempt and suicide characteristics in the Korean suicidal population. The findings intend to contribute to a thorough understanding of suicidal phenomena and development of suicide prevention guidelines. The present cross-section study examines the study rationale, methodology, and baseline characteristics of the participants. Methods: Participants were enrolled via the hospital and community gateways, establishing the hospital-based cohort (HC) and community-based cohort (CC), respectively. Baseline assessment was conducted on sociodemographic, clinical, diagnostic, and psychopathological aspects. The Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale was used to investigate suicidality. Results: A total of 800 suicidal people aged 15 years or older were enrolled from 8 university hospitals and 8 community mental health welfare centers (CMHWCs), among whom 480 (60%) were suicidal ideators and 320 (40%) were attempters. The ideators comprised 207 CC and 273 HC participants, whereas the attempters, 34 CC and 286 HC participants. Despite their lower severity in some measures, including suicidal ideation, compared with their HC counterparts, the CC participants within each group of ideators or attempters presented clinically significant psychopathology. Moreover, alcohol use problems and past suicide attempt were more likely to be found in CC participants. Only 11.1% to 21.6% of the participants in each of the four groups (defined by the cohorts and the ideators/attempters) were on any type of psychiatric treatment. Conclusions: Suicidal visitors to CMHWCs need to be as closely monitored as suicidal patients in university hospitals, especially considering their association with problem drinking and past suicide attempt. A cautious assumption is that the high suicide rate in Korea might be partly attributable to the low proportion of patients receiving psychiatric services. Phospholipase is an enzyme that hydrolyzes various phospholipid substrates at specific ester bonds and plays important roles such as membrane remodeling, as digestive enzymes, and the regulation of cellular mechanism. Phospholipase proteins are divided into following the four major groups according to the ester bonds they cleave off: phospholipase A1 (PLA1), phospholipase A2 (PLA2), phospholipase C (PLC), and phospholipase D (PLD). Among the four phospholipase groups, PLA1 has been less studied than the other phospholipases. Here, we report the first molecular structures of plant PLA1s: AtDSEL and CaPLA1 derived from Arabidopsis thaliana and Capsicum annuum, respectively. AtDSEL and CaPLA1 are novel PLA1s in that they form homodimers since PLAs are generally in the form of a monomer. The dimerization domain at the C-terminal of the AtDSEL and CaPLA1 makes hydrophobic interactions between each monomer, respectively. The C-terminal domain is also present in PLA1s of other plants, but not in PLAs of mammals and fungi. An activity assay of AtDSEL toward various lipid substrates demonstrates that AtDSEL is specialized for the cleavage of sn-1 acyl chains. This report reveals a new domain that exists only in plant PLA1s and suggests that the domain is essential for homodimerization.

Alteration of protein O-glycosylation in various human cancers including breast cancer is well known, but molecular roles of their aberrant glycosylations on cancer have not been fully understood. We previously reported critical roles of polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 6 (GALNT6 or GalNAc-T6) that was upregulated in a great majority of breast cancer tissues. Here we further report O-glycosylation of estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) by GALNT6 and the significant role of its nuclear localization in breast cancer cells. Knockdown of GALNT6 expression in two breast cancer cell lines, T47D and MCF7, in which both ER-α and GALNT6 were highly expressed, by small interfering RNA could significantly attenuate expression of ER-α. Immunocytochemical analysis clearly demonstrated the drastic decrease of ER-α protein in the nucleus of these cancer cells. Accordingly, the downstream genes of the ER-α pathway such as MYC, CCND1, and CTSD were significantly downregulated. We confirmed GALNT6-dependent ER-α O-glycosylation and identified O-glycosylation of S573 in an F domain of ER-α by GALNT6 through LC-MS/MS analysis. We also obtained evidences showing that the glycosylation of ER-α at S573 by GALNT6 is essential for protein stability and nuclear localization of ER-α in breast cancer cells. Furthermore, we designed cell membrane–permeable peptides including the O-glycosylation site and found a significant decrease of the cell viability of breast cancer cells by treatment of these peptides in a GALNT6 expression–dependent manner. Our study suggests that targeting the GALNT6 enzymatic activity as well as the GALNT6/ER-α interaction could be a promising therapeutic approach to ER-α–positive breast cancer patients.

Abstract Background The optimal strategy for vaccination to induce CD8+ T cell responses against WT1 is not known. Methods A pilot randomized study in HLA-A02+ patients to receive vaccination with WT1 in Montanide or in poly ICLC, a TLR3 agonist, to explore the novel immune adjuvant was conducted. Seven patients were randomized. Four patients received WT1 in Montanide, and three with WT1 in poly ICLC. Five patients were in morphologic remission and two had residual morphologic disease at the study entry. Results All patients finished the induction phase without any major toxicity except mild transient local injection reaction. One patient on the Montanide arm developed aseptic ulceration at two vaccine sites which healed without antibiotics. Three of 4 patients on the Montanide arm had a decreased expression of WT1 after WT1 vaccination, and two of them demonstrated generation of WT1-specific cytotoxic CD8+ T cell responses with biased TCR beta chain enrichment. In contrast, no obvious WT1-specific immune responses were detected in two patients on the poly ICLC arm, nor was there clonal enrichment by TCR alpha/beta sequencing; however, these patients did also have decreased WT1 expression and remained in remission several years after the initiation of treatment. Conclusions WT1 peptide vaccine with Montanide as an adjuvant induces detectable WT1-specific CD8+ T cell responses with clonal TCR enrichment, which may be capable of controlling leukemia recurrence in the setting of minimal residual disease. Poly ICLC may induce anti-leukemic activity in the absence of detectable WT1 specific CD8+ T cell responses. Sargassum thunbergii has been traditionally used as an edible and medicinal material in oriental countries. However, the skin-whitening and anti-wrinkling effects of S. thunbergii have not yet been investigated. This study was conducted to establish optimal extraction conditions for the production of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity as well as skin-whitening and anti-wrinkle effects using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in S. thunbergii. The extraction time (5.30~18.7 min), extraction temperature (22.4~79.6 °C), and ethanol concentration (0.0~99.5%), which are the main variables of the UAE, were optimized using a central composite design. Quadratic regression equations were derived based on experimental data and showed a high coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.85), demonstrating suitability for prediction. The optimal UAE condition for maximizing all dependent variables, including radical scavenging activity (RSA), tyrosinase inhibitory activity (TIA), and collagenase inhibitory activity (CIA), was identified as an extraction time of 12.0 min, an extraction temperature of 65.2 °C, and ethanol of 53.5%. Under these conditions, the RSA, TIA, and CIA of S. thunbergii extract were 86.5%, 88.3%, and 91.4%, respectively. We also confirmed S. thunbergii extract had inhibitory effects on the mRNA expression of tyrosinase-related protein-1, matrix metalloproteinase-1, and matrix metalloproteinase-9, which are the main genes of melanin synthesis and collagen hydrolysis. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify the main phenolic compounds in S. thunbergii extract, and caffeic acid was identified as a major peak, demonstrating that high value-added ingredients with skin-whitening and anti-wrinkling effects can be produced from S. thunbergii and used for developing cosmetic materials.

The present study investigated the effects of Allium sativum stem extract (ASE) on B16-F0 cell growth and metastasis. Evaluation of the effects of ASE on B16-F0 cells’ viability and migration showed that 0.5 mg/mL ASE inhibited B16-F0 cells’ growth by 30.2% and migration by 38.5%, which indicates that the ASE has anticancer and antimetastatic effects on B16-F0 cells. To study the anticancer and antimetastatic mechanism, mRNA levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2), and matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9) expressions were evaluated with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and 0.25 and 0.5 mg/mL ASE was found to exert significant inhibition on mRNA expressions of VEGF, MMP-2, and MMP-9 in B16-F0 cells. Thus, ASE reduce extracellular matrix degradation through inhibitions of expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, and also showed an angiogenesis inhibitory effect through reduction of VEGF expression. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that among various polyphenols, gallic acid (2.1 mg/g) was a major compound of ASE. Overall, our results demonstrated that ASE inhibited the growth and migration of B16-F0 cells through downregulation of the VEGF, MMP-2, and MMP-9 genes expression, which indicates ASE could be applied for the prevention and treatment of melanoma.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and intracellular iron levels are critical modulators of lipid peroxidation that trigger iron-dependent non-apoptotic ferroptosis in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Histochrome (HC), with a potent antioxidant moiety and iron-chelating capacity, is now available in clinical practice. However, limited data are available about the protective effects of HC on ferroptotic cell death in myocardial I/R injury. In this study, we investigated whether the intravenous administration of HC (1 mg/kg) prior to reperfusion could decrease myocardial damage by reducing ferroptosis. Rats undergoing 60 min of ischemia and reperfusion were randomly divided into three groups as follows: (1) Sham, (2) I/R control, and (3) I/R + HC. Serial echocardiography up to four weeks after I/R injury showed that intravenous injection of HC significantly improved cardiac function compared to the I/R controls. In addition, the hearts of rats who received intravenous injection of HC exhibited significantly lower cardiac fibrosis and higher capillary density. HC treatment decreased intracellular and mitochondrial ROS levels by upregulating the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) and its downstream genes. HC also inhibited erastin- and RSL3-induced ferroptosis in rat neonatal cardiomyocytes by maintaining the intracellular glutathione level and through upregulated activity of glutathione peroxidase 4. These findings suggest that early intervention with HC before reperfusion rescued myocardium from I/R injury by preventing ferroptotic cell death. Therefore, HC is a promising therapeutic option to provide secondary cardioprotection in patients who undergo coronary reperfusion therapy.

Accurate bracket placement is essential for successful orthodontic treatment. An indirect bracket bonding system (IDBS) has been developed to ensure proper bracket positioning with three-dimensional computer-aided transfer jigs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of bracket positioning by a one-body transfer jig according to the tooth type and presence/absence of a resin base. In total, 506 teeth from 20 orthodontic patients were included in this study. After initial dental models were scanned, virtual setup and bracket positioning procedures were performed with 3D software. Transfer jigs and RP models were fabricated with a 3D printer, and brackets were bonded to the RP model with or without resin base fabrication. The best-fit method of 3D digital superimposition was used to evaluate the lineal and angular accuracy of the actual bracket position compared to a virtual bracket position. Although all the measurements showed significant differences in position, they were clinically acceptable. Regarding the tooth types, premolars and molars showed higher accuracy than anterior teeth. The presence or absence of a resin base did not consistently affect the accuracy. In conclusion, the proper application of IDBS should be performed considering the errors, and resin base fabrication might not be essential in ensuring high-accuracy IDBS.

A detrending technique is proposed for continuous-wave (CW) radar to remove the effects of direct current (DC) offset, including DC drift, which is a very slow noise that appears near DC. DC drift is mainly caused by unwanted vibrations (generated by the radar itself, target objects, or surroundings) or characteristic changes in components in the radar owing to internal heating. It reduces the accuracy of the circle fitting method required for I/Q imbalance calibration and DC offset removal. The proposed technique effectively removes DC drift from the time-domain waveform of the baseband signals obtained for a certain time using polynomial fitting. The accuracy improvement in the circle fitting by the proposed technique using a 5.8 GHz CW radar decreases the error in the displacement measurement and increases the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in vital signal detection. The measurement results using a 5.8 GHz radar show that the proposed technique using a fifth-order polynomial fitting decreased the displacement error from 1.34 mm to 0.62 mm on average when the target was at a distance of 1 m. For a subject at a distance of 0.8 m, the measured SNR improved by 7.2 dB for respiration and 6.6 dB for heartbeat.

We previously reported that overexpression of an O-type glycosyltransferase, GALNT6 (polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 6) played critical roles in mammary carcinogenesis. To further investigate the biological function of GALNT6, we screened a substrate protein(s) of GALNT6 using a VVA (Vicia villosa agglutinin) lectin (specific to GalNAc-Ser/Thr) pull-down method followed by mass spectrometry analysis. Here we report GRP78 (glucose-regulated protein 78, also known as HSPA5, heat shock 70 kDa protein 5), which is highly expressed in cancer cells and indicated to play important roles in various cellular processes including ER (endoplasmic reticulum) stress and autophagy, as a novel substrate of GALNT6. We found that GALNT6-induced O-glycosylation is critical for the stability of GRP78, its subcellular localization in ER, and its anti-apoptotic function. Furthermore, we demonstrated that overexpression of GRP78 could be important for Golgi-to-ER relocation of GALNT6. Collectively, our study revealed biological significances of O-glycosylation of GRP78 protein, which might play significant roles in the survival of cancer cells, and thus provided a new insight in cancer cell death and useful information for development of anti-cancer treatment targeting the GALNT6-GRP78 pathway.

Tumor draining lymph nodes (TDLNs) are located in the routes of lymphatic drainage from a primary tumor and have the highest risk of metastasis in various types of solid tumors. TDLNs are also considered as a tissue to activate the antitumor immunity, where antigen-specific effector T cells are generated. However, T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires in TDLNs have not been well characterized. We collected 23 colorectal cancer tumors with 203 lymph nodes with/without metastatic cancer cells (67 were metastasis-positive and the remaining 136 were metastasis-negative) and performed TCR sequencing. Metastasis-positive TDLNs showed a significantly lower TCR diversity and shared TCR clonotypes more frequently with primary tumor tissues compared to metastasis-negative TDLNs. Principal component analysis indicated that TDLNs with metastasis showed similar TCR repertoires. These findings suggest that cancer-reactive T cell clones could be enriched in the metastasis-positive TDLNs.

To develop a practically applicable method for T-cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cell immunotherapy targeting neoantigens, we have been attempting to identify neoantigen-specific T cell receptors (TCRs) and establish TCR-engineered T cells in a 3–4-month period. In this study, we report the characterization of T cell repertoires in tumor microenvironment (TME) and identification of neoantigen-specific TCRs after stimulation of patient-derived T cells. We screened 15 potential neoantigen peptides and successfully identified two CD8+HLA-dextramer+ T cells, which recognized MAGOHBG17A and ZCCHC14P368L. All three dominant TCR clonotypes from MAGOHBG17A-HLA dextramer-sorted CD8+ T cells were also found in T cells in TME, while none of dominant TCR clonotypes from ZCCHC14P368L-HLA dextramer-sorted CD8+ T cells was found in the corresponding TME. The most dominant TCRA/TCRB pairs for these two neoantigens were cloned into HLA-matched healthy donors’ T lymphocytes to generate TCR-engineered T cells. The functional assay showed MAGOHBG17A TCR-engineered T cells could be significantly activated in a mutation-specific, HLA-restricted and peptide-dose-dependent manner while ZCCHC14P368L TCR-engineered T cells could not. Our data showed neoantigen-reactive T cell clonotypes that were identified in the patient’s peripheral blood could be present in the corresponding TME and might be good TCRs targeting neoantigens.

This paper presents a compact-sized haptic device based on a cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) mechanism for teleoperation. CDPRs characteristically have large workspaces and lightweight actuators. An intuitive and user-friendly remote control has not yet been achieved, owing to the unfamiliar multiple-cable configuration of CDPRs. To address this, we constructed a portable compact-sized CDPR with the same configuration as that of a larger fully constrained slave CDPR. The haptic device is controlled by an admittance control for stiffness adjustment and implemented in an embedded microprocessor-based controller for easy installation on an operator’s desk. To validate the performance of the device, we constructed an experimental teleoperation setup by using the prototyped portable CDPR as a master and larger-size CDPR as a slave robot. Experimental results showed that a human operator can successfully control the master device from a remote site and synchronized motion between the master and slave device was performed. Moreover, the user-friendly teleoperation could intuitively address situations at a remote site and provide an operator with realistic force during the motion of the slave CDPR.

In this paper, we present an optimal flying path for unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted internet of things sensor networks using a location aware multi-layer information map considering different utility functions based on the sensor density, energy consumption, flight time, and flying risk level. The overall weighted sum of multi-objective utility functions is maximized using the genetic algorithm. The simulation results verify that the optimum solution points can be obtained by adjusting the weights while satisfying the required constraints.

Pancreatic cancer reveals the worst prognosis among human cancers with little improvement in its clinical outcome in the last three decades. We previously suggested that polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 6 (GALNT6), which catalyzes O-type glycosylation of Mucin 1, might be a promising molecular target for drug development for breast cancer. In this study, we report upregulation of GALNT6 in pancreatic cancer cells where Mucin proteins are highly O-glycosylated. We found that knockdown of GALNT6 with small interfering RNA in pancreatic cancer cells decreased the amount of Mucin 4 protein as well as that of its transcript, reduced the levels of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 and extracellular signal–regulated kinase, and significantly reduced pancreatic cancer cell viability. Interestingly, knockdown of GALNT6 caused drastic morphological changes of pancreatic cells, accompanied with the cadherin switching from P-cadherin to E-cadherin. Considering important roles of Mucin 4 in growth and invasion, our findings imply that targeting GALNT6 is a very promising therapeutic strategy for treatment of pancreatic cancer patients who still have very limited treatment modalities.

In this paper, we propose a Doppler spectrum-based passenger detection scheme for a CW (Continuous Wave) radar sensor in vehicle applications. First, we design two new features, referred to as an ‘extended degree of scattering points’ and a ‘different degree of scattering points’ to represent the characteristics of the non-rigid motion of a moving human in a vehicle. We also design one newly defined feature referred to as the ‘presence of vital signs’, which is related to extracting the Doppler frequency of chest movements due to breathing. Additionally, we use a BDT (Binary Decision Tree) for machine learning during the training and test steps with these three extracted features. We used a 2.45 GHz CW radar front-end module with a single receive antenna and a real-time data acquisition module. Moreover, we built a test-bed with a structure similar to that of an actual vehicle interior. With the test-bed, we measured radar signals in various scenarios. We then repeatedly assessed the classification accuracy and classification error rate using the proposed algorithm with the BDT. We found an average classification accuracy rate of 98.6% for a human with or without motion.

A frequency-shift keying (FSK) radar in the 2.45-GHz band is proposed for highly accurate vital-signs detection. The measurement accuracy of the proposed detector for the heartbeat is increased by using the cross-correlation between the phase differences of signals at two frequencies used by the FSK radar, which alternately transmits and receives the signals with different frequencies. Two frequencies—2.45 and 2.5 GHz—are effectively discriminated by using the envelope detection with the frequency control signal of the signal generator in the output waveform of the FSK radar. The phase difference between transmitted and received signals at each frequency is determined after calibrating the I / Q imbalance and direct-current offset using a data-based imbalance compensation algorithm, the Gram–Schmidt procedure, and the Pratt method. The absolute-distance measurement results for a human being show that the vital signs obtained at each frequency using the proposed FSK radar have a cross-correlation. The heartbeat detection results for the proposed FSK radar at a distance of < 2.4 m indicate a reduction in the error rate and an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio compared with those obtained using a single operating frequency.

Biomass is a solid fuel that can be used instead of coal to address the issue of greenhouse gases. Currently, biomass is used directly in combustion or via co-combustion in coal-fired power plants. However, its use is limited due to calorific value and ash problems. In this study, wet torrefaction (WT) was carried out at various temperatures (160 °C, 180 °C, and 200 °C) and the properties of the product were evaluated. In comparison to dry torrefaction, the ash contained in biomass was extracted by an acidic solution (i.e., acetic acid) from the overreaction of the biomass. From examining the ash content of the treated WT, it was confirmed that K2O of basic ash was mainly extracted. In particular, in the case of K2O, since the main cause of combustion problems are issues such as fouling and slagging, the removed WT can be stably combusted in the boiler. Finally, the combustion and emission behaviors were evaluated by TGA-DTG and TGA-FTIR. As the fuel-N was decreased in the WT proess, the NOx in the emission gas after combustion was lower than that of raw miscanthus, and SO2 showed a similar value. As a result, it was confirmed that the WT sample is an advanced fuel in terms of fuel upgrading, alkali minerals, and NOx emission compared to raw miscanthus.

In this paper, we propose a novel method to precisely match two aerial images that were obtained in different environments via a two-stream deep network. By internally augmenting the target image, the network considers the two-stream with the three input images and reflects the additional augmented pair in the training. As a result, the training process of the deep network is regularized and the network becomes robust for the variance of aerial images. Furthermore, we introduce an ensemble method that is based on the bidirectional network, which is motivated by the isomorphic nature of the geometric transformation. We obtain two global transformation parameters without any additional network or parameters, which alleviate asymmetric matching results and enable significant improvement in performance by fusing two outcomes. For the experiment, we adopt aerial images from Google Earth and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). To quantitatively assess our result, we apply the probability of correct keypoints (PCK) metric, which measures the degree of matching. The qualitative and quantitative results show the sizable gap of performance compared to the conventional methods for matching the aerial images. The stroma of breast cancer can promote the disease’s progression, but whether its composition and functions are shared among different subtypes is poorly explored. We compared stromal components of a luminal [mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV)–Neu] and a triple-negative/basal-like [C3(1)–Simian virus 40 large T antigen (Tag)] genetically engineered breast cancer mouse model. The types of cytokines and their expression levels were very different in the two models, as was the extent of innate immune cell infiltration; however, both models showed infiltration of innate immune cells that expressed matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), an extracellular protease linked to the progression of many types of cancer. By intercrossing with Mmp9 null mice, we found that the absence of MMP9 delayed tumor onset in the C3(1)-Tag model but had no effect on tumor onset in the MMTV-Neu model. We discovered that protein levels of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1), an MMP9 substrate, were increased in C3(1)-Tag;Mmp9−/− compared to C3(1)-Tag;Mmp9+/+ tumors. In contrast, IGFBP-1 protein expression was low in MMTV-Neu tumors regardless of Mmp9 status. IGFBP-1 binds and antagonizes IGFs, preventing them from activating their receptors to promote cell proliferation and survival. Tumors from C3(1)-Tag;Mmp9−/− mice had reduced IGF-1 receptor phosphorylation, consistent with slower tumor onset. Finally, gene expression analysis of human breast tumors showed that high expression of IGFBP mRNA was strongly correlated with good prognosis but not when MMP9 mRNA was also highly expressed. In conclusion, MMP9 has different effects on breast cancer progression depending on whether IGFBPs are expressed.
