Species distributions and the mechanisms that produce patterns in the occupation space are recurrent themes in community ecology. Here, we examine beta diversity among assemblages of small mammals in the Cerrado domain of Brazil to partition the effects of turnover and nestedness on species distributions. Our objective was to evaluate whether balanced spatial variation in abundance (β bal) and abundance gradients (β gra) are congruent within and among habitats and localities of the Brazilian Cerrado. In addition, we wanted to understand whether ecological mechanisms, such as dispersal limitation, habitat filtering, and species sorting, drive the distribution patterns of the Cerrado small mammals. We analyzed the occurrence and abundances of small mammals from 16 localities widely distributed across the Cerrado biome, and grouped our data with respect to two distinct spatial scales. Baselga’s Bray–Curtis index of dissimilarity and its respective partitions, i.e., balanced variation in abundance (β bal) and abundance gradients (β gra), were estimated between sampling units at the two spatial scales. Thus, we used exponential models to search for distance decay in species similarity between pairs of localities and between similar habitats. Our results show that differences between small mammal assemblages in the Cerrado are driven mainly by species replacement rather than independent gain or loss of species, both at small and large scales. The spatial turnover patterns of small mammals in the Cerrado biome are determined by a combination of large scale (biogeographic, spatial) and local mechanisms (low dispersal and habitat specificity). However, processes occurring at small scales seem to be more important in species sorting than processes occurring at large scales. The spatial configuration of the landscape and the extent and quality of habitats strongly influence the rate of species turnover in Cerrado. Thus, protecting the different types of habitats should be of prime importance to conserving the diversity of Cerrado small mammals.

Carni-vores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide managementand conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropicalregion: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; andUrsidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropicalcarnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTRO-PICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data wereobtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organi-zations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including cameratrapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature(peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated inthis compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n=79,343; 79.7%) butalso includes non-detection data (n=20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data(n=43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute tomacroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspec-tives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distri-bution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans andsafeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combinedwith other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and relatedecological processes within the Neotropics. There are no copyright restrictions and no restric-tion for using data from this data paper, as long as the data paper is cited as the source of theinformation used. We also request that users inform us of how they intend to use the data.

The relationship between environmental heterogeneity and species diversity has been one of the most studied patterns in ecology. However, some taxa and regions worldwide still lack studies to verify this relationship. Phyllostomidae is the most ecologically diverse family of mammals worldwide, encompassing a great proportion of the species of mammals and bats across the Amazon forest. Even though the Amazon seems to be a homogeneous landscape with an unlimited supply of water, it presents a high variation in vegetation types and proximity to large bodies of water. In our study, we have analyzed the relationship between environmental heterogeneity and proximity to large bodies of water in the structure of phyllostomid assemblages (Chao-estimated species richness and capture rates). We have found that an increase in landscape heterogeneity associated with large bodies of water and representative flooded forest increase species richness. In addition, more heterogeneous landscapes in the presence of water have presented a higher abundance of bats. Our findings might be related with the small niche widths of phyllostomids, which could have promoted specialization in some landscape features, while the presence of water could have promoted an increase in food availability (insects and fruits), leading to an increase in phyllostomid richness and abundance. This is important information for planning where to place protected areas in the northeastern portion of the Amazon, while taking into account the consequences of drought and deforestation close to water bodies on the local phyllostomid fauna, and the maintenance of the ecosystem services provided by a higher bat diversity.

Phyllomys is the most species-rich genus among spiny tree rats of the family Echimyidae and includes members widely distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest of South America. Among recognized species recovered in previous studies, 4 lineages are unnamed and their taxonomic distinctness needs further investigation. Biogeographic analyses recovered an Amazonian ancestor of the basal lineage leading to living Phyllomys, suggesting ancient connections between the 2 largest South American rainforests, and presence of rainforest corridors within the central Brazilian dry biomes. Based on exhaustive taxonomic sampling of Phyllomys, applying multigene phylogenetic methods, and morphological and karyological data, we described a new species of Phyllomys from central Brazil. Geographical records from the center of the Cerrado biome of central Brazil indicate an unexpected location for the distribution of the genus, given the contrast between the physical and biological characteristics of the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest habitats. Contrary to previous studies, the analysis of the ancestral geographic range performed here suggests a Cerrado ancestral distribution for Phyllomys during the late Miocene. This result favors the hypothesis of a past link between the Amazon and Atlantic Forest in central Brazil, through the region occupied today by the dry Cerrado, and that forest expansions and contractions may have occurred in Brazilian dry biomes over the course of the Tertiary.

Beginning in November 2018, Brazilian legislation regulating access to genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge will cause a bureaucratic collapse of Biodiversity research in Brazil. Law number 13.123/2015 and Decree 8772/2016 impose severe barriers to basic and applied research, and to international cooperation by introducing mandatory registry of research access to native organisms in Brazil. This legal framework was meant to improve governmental control over systems of biotechnology research using genetic material and associated chemical compounds, which are central points of the Nagoya Protocol (CBD 2011) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD 1992, 2012). However, the requirements imposed by the mandatory registry of research in the new National System for Governance of Genetic Heritage and Associated Traditional Knowledge (SisGen), the system of Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), and the need to record access to organismal data prior to publication of scientific results or exportation of specimens for scientific research are technically impracticable and not part of the Nagoya Protocol or CBD ..

Activity patterns reflect adaptations to local biological and physical conditions. We estimated the activity patterns of 3 mesocarnivore species in a semiarid environment in northeastern Brazil: the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus). We compared the overlap of daily activity among these species and to apex predators. We also estimated nighttime activity of these mesocarnivores during 2 years and compared activity peaks with those of apex predators and potential prey. All 3 mesocarnivores were nocturnal, with ocelots having only 1 record during daytime. Coefficients of overlap with larger predators were high (Δ1 > 0.7) for all pairwise comparisons, since all species were very nocturnal. Nighttime-only activity comparisons (Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests) showed that activity of oncillas differed from that of both larger mesocarnivores and jaguar activity, suggesting temporal segregation. Contrary to our expectations, rodent activity was dissimilar from that of ocelots and crab-eating foxes, but activity of rodents and oncillas was relatively synchronous. Activity of both cat species seems limited to the cooler nighttime, and nocturnal behavior of oncillas more likely reflects activity of potential prey rather than regulation by intraguild predators. Future studies in arid regions should consider climatic factors when estimating activity patterns.

Carnivores face conflicts with humans, which has reduced their numbers and distribution. Carnivores compete in intraguild predation systems, Subordinate predators usually avoid top predators through spatial or temporal separation. Coexistence requires a complex combination of resources and environmental conditions. In this study, we assessed the occupancy and temporal activity during night time of the jaguar ( Panthera onca ) and puma ( Puma concolor ) in the Serra da Capivara National Park (SCNP), located in the semi-arid Caatinga biome of Brazil. Felines face biological limitations in hot environments. We used camera-traps, occupancy models and temporal analysis to evaluate their patterns of habitat use, activity and interactions in SCNP between 2009 and 2011. We considered jaguar as dominant predator and puma as subordinate, and expected to find spatial and temporal avoidance between them. We found evidence of spatial and temporal coexistence. This coexistence could be a result of a restriction of niche separation between both species, influenced by the harsh conditions in the Caatinga, represented by a combination of extreme temperatures, scarcity of refuges to thermoregulate, an environment around SCNP with a high level of human disturbance and an apparent increase in prey due conservation policies.

Population dynamics of small mammals can be strongly influenced by seasonality. Long-term studies are important in detecting population size variation in small mammals, and understanding the causes of that variation. We performed a six-year study to investigate fluctuations in population parameters (reproduction, recruitment, survival rates, abundance, and capture probability) of three rodent species at the core of the Brazilian cerrado domain. Small mammals were captured monthly within two grids during six years at Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station in the Federal District, Brazil. Model selection for explaining variation in rodent survival rates and capture probability was performed using MARK (Robust Design model). All three rodent species showed highest proportion of reproductive females in wet seasons. Calomys tener and T. lasiotis are seasonal and population size is higher in dry than in wet seasons, while the most abundant N. lasiurus had no seasonal patterns. Annual variation in abundance was also important for these three species. Thalpomys lasiotis declined over the six years of the study. These species showed highest survival estimates in the dry season. Our results reinforce the idea that not only climatic (rainfall and drought) events are linked to population numbers, survival rates, and capturability, but also that the life histories of the species can play an important role in their responses to variations in rainfall-productivity events.

Anthropogenic activities have accelerated habitat change, loss, and fragmentation, threatening biodiversity over large portions of the tropics. The resulting anthropogenically created landscape mosaics often include forests of different successional stages or that have experienced different levels of anthropogenic use, which affect the physical structure of the forest (e.g., forest height, vertical complexity of vegetation). These physical characteristics of forests may affect the abundance and biodiversity of forest inhabitants, and obscure effects of landscape changes (e.g., percent forest cover) on animal species. Because bats are ecologically diverse and include seed dispersers, pollinators, and top predators, they contribute to the structure and function of forests, and directly affect forest integrity and regeneration. Thus, understanding how variation in the vegetative structure of forests affects the abundance and biodiversity of bats may provide important information to effectively manage and conserve forest fragments. We surveyed bats at 24 sites in the southern Brazilian Amazon, and quantified vegetation structure (density, height, and basal area of trees, density of understory, and canopy openness). Using generalized linear mixed-effects models, we tested simple relationships of each structural characteristic with community- (taxonomic and phylogenetic dimensions of biodiversity), guild-, and population-level attributes of bats. Models for total abundance, taxonomic biodiversity (species diversity and dominance), and phylogenetic diversity were significant, increasing with tree height and basal area, and decreasing with canopy openness. At the population level, abundances of frugivores (Carollia perspicillata, Rhinophylla pumilio, Artibeus planirostris, A. obscurus, A. lituratus, Uroderma bilobatum) and nectarivores (Lonchopylla thomasi, Glossophaga soricina) were related significantly to vegetation structure. Abundances of some understory frugivores exhibited negative relationships with tree height, choosing younger forests, whereas abundances of canopy frugivores were highest in closed canopy forests. Of the nectarivores, L. thomasi was more abundant in older forests (negative relationship with density of trees), whereas G. soricina was more abundant in areas with low canopies and low basal area (i.e., earlier successional forest). Consequently, effective management of forest fragments should include consideration of local forest age and vegetation structure, as well as forest connectivity and patch size. In general, protecting areas with large trees and closed canopies enhances the persistence of pollinators and seed dispersers.

We undertook a comprehensive, critical review of literature concerning the distribution, conservation status, and taxonomy of species of mammals endemic to the Cerrado and the Caatinga, the two largest biomes of the South American Dry-Diagonal. We present species accounts and lists of species, which we built with criteria that, in our opinion, yielded results with increased scientific rigor relative to previously published lists – e.g., excluding nominal taxa whose statuses as species have been claimed only on the basis of unpublished data, incomplete taxonomic work, or weak evidence. For various taxa, we provided arguments regarding species distributions, conservation and taxonomic statuses previously lacking in the literature. Two major findings are worth highlighting. First, we unveil the existence of a group of species endemic to both the Cerrado and the Caatinga (i.e., present in both biomes and absent in all other biomes). From the biogeographic point of view, this group, herein referred to as Caatinga-Cerrado endemics, deserves attention as a unit – just as in case of the Caatinga-only and the Cerrado-only endemics. We present preliminary hypotheses on the origin of these three endemic faunas (Cerrado-only, Caatinga-only, and Caatinga-Cerrado endemics). Secondly, we discovered that a substantial portion of the endemic mammalian faunas of the Caatinga and the Cerrado faces risks of extinction that are unrecognized in the highly influential Red List of Threatened Species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). “Data deficient” is a category that misrepresents the real risks of extinction of these species considering that (a) some of these species are known only from a handful of specimens collected in a single or a few localities long ago; (b) the Cerrado and the Caatinga have been sufficiently sampled to guarantee collection of additional specimens of these species if they were abundant; (c) natural habitats of the Cerrado and the Caatinga have been substantially altered or lost in recent decades. Failures either in the design of the IUCN criteria or in their application to assign categories of extinction risks represent an additional important threat to these endemic faunas because their real risks of extinctions become hidden. It is imperative to correct this situation, particularly considering that these species are associated to habitats that are experiencing fast transformation into areas for agriculture, at an unbearable cost for biodiversity.

For a speciesto become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonna-tive habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this dataset, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposeda geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into theNeotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced recordson alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 speciesbelonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotrop-ics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Floridain the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 coun-tries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g.,Callithrixsp.,Myocastor coypus,Nasua nasua)considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The mostnumerous species in terms of records are fromBossp. (n=37,782),Sus scrofa(n=6,730), andCanis familiaris(n=10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caf-fer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). We employed correlative modeling analyses to infer the geographic distribution of climatically suitable conditions for the species on climatic scenarios for the present and for years 2050 (average for 2041–2060) and 2070 (average for 2061–2080). The data consisted of species occurrences and 5 bioclimatic variables containing interpolated and averaged information on seasonal variation of temperature and precipitation. Models were projected onto climatic scenarios employing three different global circulation models and two representative concentration pathways. For each of these scenarios, we quantified the expected changes in area (km2) holding suitable climatic conditions and how much of that area is expected to be within the current Brazilian system of protected areas. Our results reveal that climate change represents a major threat for the survival of L. vetulus by drastically reducing its habitat availability in a period of time no longer than five decades from now. Experimental physiological and behavioral studies are necessary to assess whether L. vetulus is able to adequately tolerate under climatic conditions different to those under which the species is currently present. Space use by animals has been studied for decades; however, gaps still exist in the understanding of how it is affected by biological and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to determine how biological traits, population parameters and seasonal variations affect the use of space by rodents in a tropical savannah environment. This study was performed in two grids in a grassland area at Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station between January 2004 and December 2013. The trapping sessions lasted six consecutive days and were performed monthly. Sherman traps, which were baited and reset daily, were used to capture the animals. The movement area was estimated using the minimum convex polygon method, and the mean movement distance was used to investigate the factors that affect the movement of the rodents. The hypothesis that a significant difference exists in the movement area size among species was corroborated; however, this difference was not related to body weight. As a general pattern for these rodents, males displayed larger movement areas than females. Movement area size showed an inverse relationship to population density. The understanding of the factors that affect the space use by rodents are complex and the interactions of these factors may also modulate space use by rodents. Our results suggest that space use is also affected by climatic variations.

In this study, we characterized the activity patterns and estimated the activity overlap between two armadillo species (Dasypus novemcinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus) in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil. We report the effect of daily mean ambient temperature on activity onset and duration of these armadillos. We captured seven yellow armadillos and three nine-banded armadillos and fitted them with very high frequency radios and temperature loggers. By monitoring the temperature of the environment (air temperatures and burrow temperatures), we inferred when the armadillo was active (above ground) or inactive (inside the burrow). Yellow armadillos were active mainly during the daytime and in the beginning of the night, while nine-banded armadillos were active mainly during the night. However, nine-banded armadillos presented a bimodal activity pattern, becoming active for a short period in the middle of the morning and/or afternoon. The proportion of activity overlap was 0.28 between the species, occurring primarily at the beginning of the night. At lower temperatures, yellow armadillos tended to leave their burrows earlier and were active for longer periods. This is probably an adaptation to their physiological constraints and limited thermoregulatory capabilities. Xenarthrans could be used as models to obtain valuable information about how physiology affects mammal behavior.

The Valley of the Paranã River is located in the states Tocantins and Goiás, Brazil. This region is inserted in the transitional area between the Cerrado, a Neotropical Savanna Hotspot, and the Amazon and Caatinga biomes. Transitional zones are alleged to be characterized by high species richness due to the overlap of species distributional ranges, and by a high level of endemism provided by the uniqueness of these regions. The aim of this study was to survey the chiropteran fauna of the Paranã River Valley, analyzing the species composition, richness and endemism, and to contribute with the increasing knowledge of the mammalian fauna of the Cerrado, since the northern portion of this biome is one of the most poorly known. We surveyed the bats using both mist net and hand capture methods, totalizing 16, 650 m2 net-hour. A total of 23 species was surveyed, being five new records for Goiás state, nine new records for Tocantins state, and 10 species considered rare or threatened. The locality Alvorada do Norte, in northeastern Goiás state, surrounded by karstic formations showed the highest number of species, highest number of new records, and of species of special interested.

Caatinga is a mosaic of xeric woodland with several savanna and tropical rainforest enclaves in interior of Northeastern Brazil. These enclaves seemingly result from expansion/retraction of mesic and dry biomes of South America following dynamics of climate changes in Pleistocene. Little is known about the influences of proximity to enclaves in species composition of xeric woodlands. The objective of this study was to analyze faunal components of bat communities in xeric woodland caatinga of the middle Sao Francisco River plain. Bats were collected in 20 caatinga fragments during one year. These data were compared with bibliographic data about bats' surveys in caatinga. The results showed high species richness in study area. We found a strong influence of rainforests but almost no influence of savanna habitats on bat species composition. There were no differences between habitats, however, when we considered taxonomy, body size and the composition of feeding guilds. Species richness and habitat use patterns may be associated with both the past occurrence of rainforests in the region during the Holocene as well as proximity to current rainforest enclaves.

White-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari) are important seed predators and dispersers throughout the Neotropics. Because they occur in groups as large as 300 individuals, they need large areas to persist. We investigated homerange size and overlap of 13 groups using radiotelemetry data from 3 years of monitoring in the Emas National Park and surrounding farmland in central Brazil. Average home-range sizes were 1,710.64 ha for 50% of the locations and 8,659.99 ha for 95% based on minimum convex polygons and 790.38 ha for 50% of the locations and 7,986.92 ha for 95% based on the fixed kernel estimator. Home-range size did not correlate with group size, the monitoring period, or the number of locations obtained. Home ranges were larger during the wet season than the dry season. Average home-range overlap among groups was 31%; there were no significant differences in overlap between seasons. Home ranges varied seasonally, most likely in response to the dynamic landscape of crop plantations surrounding the park. Although the peccaries fared well in the heterogeneous agricultural landscape surrounding the park, conflict with farmers due to crop damage and landscape changes due to expansion of sugarcane plantations need to be addressed by conservation strategies.

The impact of deforestation and fragmen- tation upon ecologically important and poorly known groups is currently an important issue for conservation biology. Herein we describe xenathran communities across the Brazilian Cerrado and study the effects of habitat fragmentation on occupancy and activity patterns on these assemblages. Our hypothesis was that larger and specialized species would be more ecologically sensitive, and likely to exhibit shifts in their activity patterns in more deforested areas as a way of dealing with the myriad of effects involved in the fragmentation process. The study was conducted by camera trapping in ten Cerrado sites. Five species were analyzed: Priodontes maximus, Euphractus sexcinctus, Dasypus novemcintus (Order Cingulata), Tamandua tetradactyla and Myrmecophaga tridactyla (Order Pilosa). Fragmentation was quantified by landscape metrics, calculated on scales that matched the species' home ranges. Occupancy and detection probability analyses were conducted to test for shifts in occupancy under different fragmentation condi- tions. A mixed-effects model analysis was conducted to test for shifts in species' frequency of records related to time of day, controlling for spatial autocor- relation by means of eigenvector-based spatial filters for the models' residuals. There were no changes in activity pattern between more and less fragmented areas, so that our behavioural plasticity hypothesis was not corroborated for this group. The lack of changes in the patterns could be explained by a species' time-lag response, or by the lack of a wide enough fragmen- tation gradient in our study.

Ocelots play a key role in ecological communities as mesopredators affecting the lower trophic level and other mesopredators. They show great variability in ecological traits across their distribution, but knowledge of this species is missing in several regions where it occurs. Here, we present the first study of ocelot in the Brazilian semiarid of Caatinga. Arid habitats might keep carnivore population density low and therefore vulnerable to environmental shocks and to human-induced changes, at risk of local extinction. To assess their population status, we used camera traps between September 2009 and January 2010. We estimated the density of ocelots using a spatially explicit capture-recapture method (SECR) to be 3.16 ± 0.46 individuals per 100 km2. This is a low-density estimate for ocelots, which might reflect the harsh conditions of the arid habitat. A longer population study of the ocelot can answer if this low population density is enough for a long-term persistence of this species in this and other arid environments. Resumo Jaguatiricas possuem um papel fundamental em comunidades ecológicas como mesopredadores, afetando níveis tróficos inferiores e também outros mesopredadores. Esta espécie possui uma grande variabilidade em suas características ecológicas em toda a sua distribuição, no entanto, o conhecimento desta espécie possui lacunas em vários locais onde ela ocorre. Neste trabalho, nós apresentamos o primeiro estudo desta espécie no semiárido brasileiro da Caatinga. Ambientes áridos podem afetar negativamente as espécies carnívoras e, aliado a alterações antrópicas, esta espécie pode ser levada a extinção local se sua densidade populacional é baixa. Portanto, para verificar o nível populacional da jaguatirica em uma região protegida da Caatinga, instalamos armadilhas fotográficas, entre setembro de 2009 e janeiro de 2010. Com os dados obtidos, calculamos a densidade desta espécie através de métodos espacialmente explícitos (SECR). A densidade estimada da jaguatirica foi de 3.16 ± 0.46 indivíduos por 100 km2. Esta estimativa é muito baixa para esta espécie, o que pode ser um reflexo das condições áridas deste ambiente. Um estudo populacional de maior duração pode ajudar a responder se esta baixa densidade é o suficiente para a persistência desta espécie a longo prazo tanto neste, quanto em outros ambientes áridos onde ela ocorre.

The planning of protected areas take into consideration the current distributions of target species, disregarding possible future range shifts under climate change. This study tested potential shifts in the distribution of three xenarthran species (the giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla ; the giant armadillo, Priodontes maximus ; and the three-banded armadillo, Tolypeutes tricinctus ) due to the effects of climate change under different dispersal scenarios. In addition, we tested the adequacy of the current Brazilian protected areas in preserving these species under future climate changes (future distribution for the year 2050), under full and null dispersal scenarios. The final occurrence maps were then confronted with two Brazilian reserve systems for the year 2010: one consisting of reserves for integral protection only (IPCU), and one that included also reserves for sustainable use and indigenous reserves (SUCU). In the IPCU system, none of the species have or will have ⩾10% of their distributions protected, under neither dispersal scenario. Including SUCU, however, M. tridactyla and P. maximus already are, and will still be, adequately protected in the future. T. tricinctus , which is endemic to the Brazilian semi-arid, will not reach the 10% goal under neither dispersal scenario, even under the SUCU system. We stress the need for management actions in the northeastern and central parts of Brazil. Opportunities for the creation of more reserves are highlighted, considering the potential range shifts and the natural habitats still present in these regions.

Hairy-eared cerrado mouse Thalpomys lasiotis is an endemic species of the cerrado biome. It can be found in open habitats, but its distribution is patchy and population numbers are unknown. In this paper, we describe, for the first time, aspects related to the ecology and natural history of T. lasiotis, detailing demographic parameters such as population densities, reproduction, home range, and longevity of this endemic and rare species. We captured, marked, and recaptured 55 individuals of T. lasiotis in Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station, located in the northeast of the Federal District, Brazil. We found significant differences on population numbers and densities between the dry and wet seasons. Densities and population numbers apparently are affected by the seasonality of food resources. Moreover, the breeding season is seasonal, and both males and females were reproductively active during the wet season. T. lasiotis showed a permanence time ranging from 2–9 months, which means that individuals can survive for at least 9 months in natural habitats. The home ranges of males and females of T. lasiotis were not significantly different. However, males have larger home ranges than females and the mean distance moved by males was higher than the distance moved by females, which is consistent with the hypothesis that males belonging to polygynous species tend to move greater distances to avoid agonistic encounters and to search sexual partners.

Most protected areas are too small to sustain populations of wide-ranging mammals; thus, identification and conservation of high-quality habitat for those animals outside parks is often a high priority, particularly for regions where extensive land conversion is occurring. This is the case in the vicinity of Emas National Park, a small protected area in the Brazilian Cerrado. Over the last 40 years the native vegetation surrounding the park has been converted to agriculture, but the region still supports virtually all of the animals native to the area. We determined the effectiveness of scat-detection dogs in detecting presence of five species of mammals threatened with extinction by habitat loss: maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), puma (Puma concolor), jaguar (Panthera onca), giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), and giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus). The probability of scat detection varied among the five species and among survey quadrats of different size, but was consistent across team, season, and year. The probability of occurrence, determined from the presence of scat, in a randomly selected site within the study area ranged from 0.14 for jaguars, which occur primarily in the forested areas of the park, to 0.91 for maned wolves, the most widely distributed species in our study area. Most occurrences of giant armadillos in the park were in open grasslands, but in the agricultural matrix they tended to occur in riparian woodlands. At least one target species occurred in every survey quadrat, and giant armadillos, jaguars, and maned wolves were more likely to be present in quadrats located inside than outside the park. The effort required for detection of scats was highest for the two felids. We were able to detect the presence for each of five wide-ranging species inside and outside the park and to assign occurrence probabilities to specific survey sites. Thus, scat dogs provide an effective survey tool for rare species even when accurate detection likelihoods are required. We believe the way we used scat-detection dogs to determine the presence of species can be applied to the detection of other mammalian species in other ecosystems.

A total of 31 yellow armadillos, Euphractus sexcinctus, were captured in the Pantanal of Nhecolândia, Brazil, between October 2006 and October 2007. The individuals were anesthetized and measured. This study presents data about body mass, number of moveable bands, head length and width, head and body length, tail length and circumference, chest circumference, ear length and width, forefoot and hindfoot length, and penis length. Morphometric averages of yellow armadillos were compared with other values available in the scientific literature. The data provided in this study will be useful for further comparative studies.

Edge effects are a well-known result of habitat fragmentation. However, little has been published on fragmentation, isolation and the intrusive influence from the surrounding matrix at the landscape level. The objectives of the present study are to evaluate the presence of dogs in the Brasilia National Park (BNP) in relation to habitat type and the influence from the surrounding matrix. In addition, this study examines the response of the native mammal fauna to the presence of dogs. Track stations were built along dirt roads in the BNP and subsequently examined for the presence or absence of tracks. We used a stepwise logistic regression to model the occurrence of five mammal species relative to habitat variables, with an α=0.05 to determine whether to enter and retain a variable in the model. A simulation of each species occurrence probability was conducted using a combination of selected habitat variables in a resource selection probability function. Results indicate a negative relationship between distance from the BNP edge and the probability of dog occurrences. From an ecological perspective, the presence of dogs inside the BNP indicates an edge effect. The occurrence of the maned wolf was positively associated with distance from a garbage dump site and negatively associated with the presence of dog tracks. The maned wolf and giant anteater seem to avoid areas near the garbage dump as well as areas with dog tracks. There is no support for the possible existence of a feral dog population inside the BNP, but the effects of free-ranging dogs on the wildlife population in such an isolated protected area must not be neglected. Domestic dog Canis familiaris populations and disease control programs should be established in the urban, sub-urban and rural areas surrounding the BNP, along with the complete removal of the garbage dump from the BNP surroundings.

Três habitats florestais no Pantanal de Poconé (Mato Grosso) foram amostrados durante 17 meses, com um esforço de 38.635 armadilhas-noites, resultando em um 6,3% de retenção de sucesso. Seis espécies de marsupiais e oito espécies de roedores foram registrados. História natural, biologia reprodutiva, comportamento e uso do habitat são descritos por seis espécies de marsupiais da planície pantaneira: Caluromys mulherengos (Linnaeus, 1758), Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840, Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister, 1854), Micoureus demerarae (Thomas, 1905) , Monodelphis domestica (Wagner, 1842) e Philander opossum (Linnaeus, 1758). Micoureus demerarae foi a espécie com maior número de indivíduos capturados (n = 240) e com o maior número de eventos de captura (n = 1.287). A reprodução da maioria das espécies começa no final da estação seca, sendo intensificada durante o período chuvoso. A floresta inundada conhecida localmente como 'Landis apresentou a maior riqueza de espécies de marsupiais (seis espécies), enquanto as florestas que nunca são alagadas, localmente conhecido como "cordilheiras", ea floresta inundada, conhecida localmente como' cambarazais ", revelou a menor riqueza de espécies, com três espécies cada. Three forested habitats at Pantanal of Poconé (Mato Grosso) were sampled during 17 months, with an effort of 38,635 trap-nights, resulting in a 6.3% of trapping success. Six marsupial and eight rodent species were recorded. Natural history, reproductive biology, behavior and habitat use are described for six marsupial species from the Pantanal floodplain: Caluromys philander (Linnaeus, 1758), Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840, Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister, 1854), Micoureus demerarae (Thomas, 1905), Monodelphis domestica (Wagner, 1842) and Philander opossum (Linnaeus, 1758). Micoureus demerarae was the species with the highest number of captured individuals (n = 240) and with the highest number of capture events (n = 1287). Reproduction of most species begins at the end of the dry season, being intensified during the wet season. The flooded forest locally known as 'landis' showed the highest marsupial species richness (six species), whereas the forests that are never flooded, locally known as 'cordilheiras', and the seasonally flooded forest, locally known as 'cambarazais', showed the lowest species richness, with three species each.

Knowledge of bat diets may be important for the conservation of small Atlantic Forest fragments because these animals play an important role in seed dispersal and natural recovery of tropical forests. The ‘Reserva Particular do Patrimonio Natural Feliciano Miguel Abdala’ (RPPN-FMA) is a 886-hectare Atlantic forest fragment consisting of a mosaic of distinct successional phases resulting from logging and natural causes, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We collected 216 fecal samples containing blood, arthropods, pollen-nectar, vegetation (leaflets and fruit peel), fruit pulp (fibers and juice) and seeds, from 18 bat species at the RPPN-FMA. Piperaceae, Solanaceae, Cecropiaceae, and Guttiferae were the most important food resources for frugivorous bats at RPPN-FMA. Piper infrutescences were consumed by Artibeus obscurus, A. fimbriatus, Carollia perspicillata, and Sturnira lilium throughout the year, functioning as key species, as already observed for other tropical rainforest sites.

Há 251 espécies de mamíferos de ocorrência confirmada no cerrado, o terceiro bioma brasileiro em riqueza de espécies. A maioria dos inventários da mastofauna do cerrado é resultado de estudos oportunísticos, com curta duração. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram (1) inventariar a mastofauna durante cinco anos de amostragens na região do Aproveitamento Hidrelétrico da Serra do Facão, no sudeste do estado de Goiás; (2) Comparar a diversidade de pequenos mamíferos em áreas abertas e florestais e (3) comparar a diversidade da mastofauna antes e depois da inundação causada pelo enchimento do reservatório do empreendimento hidrelétrico. A coleta de dados foi realizada em 19 campanhas de amostragem, entre maio de 2008 e setembro de 2013. Os pequenos mamíferos não voadores foram amostrados com armadilhas Sherman e Tomahawk, e armadilhas de queda; morcegos foram amostrados com redes de neblina; e os mamíferos de maior porte foram amostrados com armadilhas-fotográficas, observações diretas e observações de vestígios. Foram registradas 20 espécies de pequenos mamíferos não-voadores, 10 espécies de morcegos e 33 de mamíferos de maior porte. A diversidade de pequenos mamíferos não voadores foi maior em ambientes florestais que em abertos, e foi também maior antes do que depois do enchimento do reservatório da hidroelétrica. Cerca de 10% das espécies registradas estão incluídas na lista oficial dos mamíferos ameaçados de extinção. O total de espécies representa 25% da fauna de mamíferos do cerrado, o que demonstra a importância da área para conservação da mastofauna regional. At least 251 mammal species are recorded for the Brazilan cerrado, which, therefore, is the third richest Brazilian biome. Most mammal surveys in Brazilian cerrado result from studies performed opportunistically and in short time periods. The aims of the present study were (1) provide a checklist for the mammalian fauna based on a five-year sampling in Serra do Facão region, Southeastern Goiás state; (2) compare small non-flying mammals diversity in open and forest areas and (3) compare species diversity before and after the flood caused by a hydroelectric reservoir filling. The data was gathered in 19 sampling periods, from May 2008 to September 2013. We sampled open and forest habitats and captured non-flying small mammals with Sherman and Tomahawk live traps and pitfalls; bats were sampled with mist-nets; large mammals were recorded with camera traps, and by direct observations and track surveys in field. We found 20 species of small non-flying mammals, 10 species of bats and 33 species of larger mammals. Species diversity was greater for forest than open habitats, and was also greater before than after the complete reservoir filling. About 10% of the recorded species are included in the Brazilian official list of threatened species. The total richness represents 25% of all cerrado mammal fauna, highlighting the importance of this area for regional mammal fauna conservation.

Sympatric species of vesper mice (Calomys expulsus and C. tener) from the Cerrado biome are often distinguished by their respective sizes. Using geometric morphometrics, we tested if interspecific differences were mainly due to isometric or allometric size variations or allometry-free shape differences. To delimit species groups, we used and compared linear discriminant analysis, calculated on subsets of individuals of known identity, and pattern recognition techniques, needing no prior information on specimens. They both yielded similar results, indicating that patterns of interspecific morphological differences are mainly due to size-free shape differences located at landmarks defined at the suture between the frontals and the parietals and between the latter and the interparietal. Correct specimen identification was obtained with pattern recognition techniques using Gaussian mixture models. Morphological differences also were found between the 2 species analyzed and the newly described C. tocantinsi represented here by its paratypes. The combination of geometric morphometrics and pattern recognition techniques seems suitable for systematic analyses aimed at elucidating interspecific patterns of morphological variation in closely related species in field studies and museum specimens.

Foram investigadas, no presente estudo a composição de espécies e a abundância de uma comunidade de pequenos mamíferos presentes nos campos de murundus, um tipo fitofisionômico característico da região central dos Cerrados brasileiros. Duas grades de armadilhas do tipo Sherman foram montadas e oito espécies de roedores foram capturadas. Não foi registrada a presença de nenhum marsupial na região. As espécies mais abundantes foram Bolomys lasiurus (Lund, 1841), Thalpomys lasiotis Thomas, 1916 e Calomys tener (Winge, 1888). Durante a estação chuvosa, B. lasiurus foi a espécie mais abundante, ao contrário de T. lasiotis que apresentou maior número de indivíduos durante o período seco. Esta distinção com relação à abundância dos indivíduos dessas duas espécies pode ser um mecanismo de adaptação que permite a coexistência nos mesmos habitats.In the present study we investigated the species composition and abundance of a small mammal community from a "campo de murundus", a characteristic vegetational type of Central Brazilian Cerrados. Two grids of Sherman traps were set and eight species of rodents was recorded. No marsupials were found in this habitat. The most abundant species were Bolomys lasiurus (Lund, 1841), Thalpomys lasiotis Thomas, 1916 and Calomys tener (Winge, 1888). Bolomys lasiurus was the most abundant species during the rainy season and T. lasiotis was more common in dry season. This may be a mechanism allowing their coexistence in the same habitats.

Fire is an important ecological factor in Cerrado vegetation of central Brazil, and in other savanna ecosystems. The effect of fire on the abundance of some Xenarthran mammal species Priodontes maximus Kerr, 1792 (giant armadillo), Euphractus sexcinctus Linnaeus, 1758 (yellow armadillo) and Myrmecophaga tridactyla Linnaeus, 1758 (giant anteater)) was studied at Reserva Xavante do Rio das Mortes, a 329 000 ha Xavante Indian reserve in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Track counts were used to compare the abundance of these mammals along seven burned and seven unburned transects, on seven occasions between August 1995 and August 1996. The number of tracks in burned and unburned areas did not differ. Xenarthrans probably use burned areas to obtain food resources, basically termites and ants. Xavante traditional fire hunts may reduce fuel accumulation and function as a mechanism to prevent more destructive fires. Fire management at Reserva Xavante is recommended because the burning system of Brazilian farmers is already influencing the Xavante community. Xavante traditional knowledge about fire could be an important instrument for this management.

Habitat association of the spiny rat, Proechimys roberti (Rodentia: Echimyidae), was studied in the National Park of Brasilia from October 1998 to June 1999. Thirty-three captures and 25 individuals were recorded with an effort of 1907 trap-nights. Stepwise logistic regression revealed a significant positive association between the presence of babacu palms and the probability of occurrence for P. roberti (p = 0.0006, df = 1). Stepwise multiple linear regression identified mean gallery forest width between sampling areas as a marginally significant variable in predicting capture success for this species (p = 0.056, df = 1). The results of this study suggest that P. roberti selects for specific microhabitats within the heterogeneous gallery forest environment.

Food items consumed by sympatric maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), and hoary foxes (Lycalopex vetulus) were investigated in the Cerrado of central Brazil to determine overlap among their diets. Home ranges and spatial segregation among these canids were also investigated. Overlap among diets was greatest for maned wolves and crab-eating foxes, which had generalist diets, although maned wolves fed on larger prey than did crab-eating foxes. Hoary foxes were frugivore-insectivores, with Syntermes termites being the most important food item. In relation to habitat use, hoary foxes were also the most selective canid, preferring more open habitats.

Les profils d'activite et d'alimentation de Lonchophylla dekeyseri, l'unique espece endemique de chauve-souris du Cerrado, ont ete etudies et mis en relation avec la floraison des plantes. Des captures mensuelles, de septembre 1997 a aout 1998, ont ete realisees dans des cavernes localisees dans la Region de Protection de l'Environnement de Cafuringa, du Federal District au Bresil. Des filets ont ete tendus entre 06 heures du soir et 06 heures du matin a l'entree des cavernes, et trois seances de captures ont ete faites par mois. La sortie des chauves-souris survient dans les premieres heures apres le crepuscule; leur retour se produit juste avant l'aube pendant la saison des pluies, la premiere moitie de la nuit et la fin de la nuit durant la saison seche. Lonchophylla dekeyseri exploite des ressources alimentaires d'origine florale principalement pendant la saison seche, lorsque ces ressources sont les plus abondantes; pendant la saison des pluies, la consommation d'insectes et de fruits s'ajoute a cette alimentation. L'examen du pelage a montre sept types de pollen, provenant principalement de Bauhinia sp., Lafoensia sp. et Pseudobombax sp. Ces plantes pollinisees par les chauves-souris fleurissent pendant la saison seche et ont des periodes de floraison differentes. L'apparition de plus d'un type de pollen dans un meme pelage traduit des interactions avec plusieurs especes de plantes au cours d'une meme nuit.

We analysed microhabitat use by the rodents Calomys tener, Necromys lasiurus and Thalpomys lasiotis and the factors that may influence their abundances in “murundu” grasslands (open fields with termite mounds) at Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station, Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil. Two grids with 100 sampling points were established and traps were placed at each intersection of the grid, where five microhabitat variables were also measured. Rodents were trapped from June through October 2008. Microhabitat explained 21% of the variation in community structure, with grass density and the number of termite mounds explaining most of the variation. Necromys lasiurus was most often captured in areas with dense grasses, whereas T. lasiotis and C. tener were most often in areas less dense with grasses.

These data suggest the giant armadillo is a specialist on insects with an opportunistic foraging strategy.

O nictemeral do tatu gigante - Priodontes maximus (Kerr, 1792) - foi estudada no campo, na Fazenda São Miguel, Unaí, Minas Gerais, Brasil, através de 82 amostras coletadas em escavações de forrageamento e 25 amostras de fezes. Em ambos os tipos de amostra do item mais comum foi a insetos (Isoptera e Hymenoptera) e, em menor quantidade, fragmentos vegetais e orhers invertebrados (Araneae, Blattaria, Coleoptera, Diplopoda, Scorpiones). Eight lesser anteaters Tamandua tetradactyla rescued from the rising waters of a dam at Serra da Mesa, Minaçu, Goiás, Brazil, were tranlocated to other areas and tracked using radio telemetry for periods of up to 10 months, from December 1996 through February 1998. With the exception of one, or perhaps two, female(s) that left the area while the radio collars were in place, the anteaters stayed within 2.17 km of their release sites and appeared to thrive. The results suggest that it is feasible to translocate small numbers of anteaters into new areas of suitable habitats without adverse effects on resident anteaters.

Carnivores and their prey occurring at the extremes of their ecological niches face particular constraints in terms of habitat suitability (HS). We combined the use of camera traps and Ecological Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA) to calculate HS for jaguars (Panthera onca), pumas (Puma concolor), and 4 prey species (3-banded armadillos, Tolypeutes tricinctus; 9-banded armadillos, Dasypus novemcinctus; collared peccaries, Pecari tajacu; and gray brocket deer, Mazama gouazoubira) in Serra da Capivara National Park (SCNP), located in the semiarid Caatinga biome of Brazil. We also evaluated HS in relation to water management applied in the Park since 1994. Considering the physiological limitations of the Caatinga's species, we used an “edge of niche” habitat-suitability algorithm. For all species examined, distance to waterholes was the ecogeographical variable with the greatest contribution for the ENFA. Water management implemented in SCNP helps to ensure the persistence of predators and prey species, since the combination of topographic characteristics and location of waterholes explained most of HS for the analyzed species.
