We present the first numerically exact study of a polaron with quadratic coupling to the oscillator displacement, using two alternative methodological developments. Our results cover both anti-adiabatic and adiabatic regimes and the entire range of electron-phonon coupling $g_2$, from the system's stability threshold at attractive $g_2=-1$ to arbitrary strong repulsion at $g_2 \gg 1$. Key properties of quadratic polarons prove dramatically different from their linear counterparts. They (i) are insensitive even to large quadratic coupling except in the anti-adiabatic limit near the threshold of instability at attraction; (ii) depend only on the adiabatic ratio but are insensitive to the electron dispersion and dimension of space; (iii) feature weak lattice deformations even at the instability point. A large polaron is a quasiparticle that consists of a nearly free electron interacting with the phonons of a material, whose lattice parameters are much smaller than the polaron scale. The electron-phonon interaction also leads to an attractive interaction between electrons, which can allow two polarons to pair up and form a bipolaron. It has been shown that large bipolarons can form in theory due to strong one-electron-one-phonon coupling, but they have not been seen in real materials because the critical value of the required electron-phonon interaction is too large. Here, we investigate the effect of one-electron-two-phonon coupling on the large bipolaron problem. Starting from a generalization of the Frohlich Hamiltonian that includes both the standard one-electron-onephonon interaction as well as an anharmonic one-electron-two-phonon interaction, we use the path-integral method to find a semianalytical upper bound for the bipolaron energy that is valid at all values of the Frohlich coupling strength alpha. We find the bipolaron phase diagram and conditions for the bipolaron stability by comparing the bipolaron energy to the energy of two free polarons. The critical value of the Frohlich coupling strength alpha crit is calculated as a function of the strength of the one-electron-two-phonon interaction. The results suggest that large bipolaron formation is more likely in materials with significant one-electron-two-phonon interaction as well as strong one-electron-one-phonon interaction, such as strontium titanate.

We study the emergence of finite-temperature topological phase transitions of the Berezinskii-KosterlitzThouless type and the collective mode spectrum of two-dimensional Fermi gases in the presence of attractive s-wave interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman fields. We show that neglecting the spin-dependent phase shift on the fermionic wave function misses an important point. Including this spin-dependent shift, we derive the effective low-energy and long-wavelength quantum action for independent (unlocked) phase fluctuations in the U(1) (charge) and SU(2) (spin) sectors and show that at least two phase transitions occur because charge and spin degrees of freedom are coupled due to the presence of spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. Furthermore, we demonstrate that vortex and antivortex excitations are characterized by two topological quantum numbers, corresponding to the quantized circulation of charge and spin velocities. Finally, we show that there are two collective modes in the superfluid phase at low temperatures which arise due to the coupling between sound and transverse-spin waves.

We investigate a Josephson junction in an electron-hole superfluid in a double-layer transition metal dichalco-genide heterostructure. The observation of a critical tunneling current is a clear signature of superfluidity. In addition, we find the BCS-BEC crossover physics in the narrow barrier region controls the critical current across the entire system. The corresponding critical velocity, which is measurable in this system, has a maximum when the excitations pass from bosonic to fermionic. Remarkably, this occurs for the density at the boundary of the BEC to BCS-BEC crossover regime determined from the condensate fraction. This provides, in a semiconductor system, an experimental way to determine the position of this boundary.

We study the fermionic quasiparticle spectrum in a zero-temperature superfluid Fermi gas, and in particular how it is modified by different disintegration processes. On top of the disintegration by emission of a collective boson ($1\to2$, subject of a previous study, PRL 124, 073404), we consider here disintegration events where three quasiparticles are emitted ($1\to3$). We show that both disintegration processes are described by a $t$-matrix self-energy (as well as some highly off-resonant vacuum processes), and we characterize the associated disintegration continua. At strong coupling, we show that the quasiparticle spectrum is heavily distorted near the $1\to3$ disintegration threshold. Near the dispersion minimum, where the quasiparticles remain well-defined, the main effect of the off-shell disintegration processes is to shift the location of the minimum by a value that corresponds to the Hartree shift in the BCS limit. For a system of bosons that interact through a class of general memory kernels, a recurrence relation for the partition function is derived within the path-integral formalism. This approach provides a generalization to previously known treatments in the literature of harmonically coupled systems of identical particles. As an example the result is applied to the specific heat of a simplified model of an open quantum system of bosons, harmonically coupled to a reservoir of distinguishable fictitious masses., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

The properties of an electron in a typical solid are modified by the interaction with the crystal ions, leading to the formation of a quasiparticle: the polaron. Such polarons are often described using the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian, which assumes the underlying lattice phonons to be harmonic. However, this approximation is invalid in several interesting materials, including the recently discovered high-pressure hydrides which superconduct at temperatures above $200$K. In this paper, we show that Fr\"ohlich theory can be extended to eliminate this problem. We derive four additional terms in the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian to account for anharmonicity up to third order. We calculate the energy and effective mass of the new polaron, using both perturbation theory and Feynman's path integral formalism. It is shown that the anharmonic terms lead to significant additional trapping of the electron. The derived Hamiltonian is well-suited for analytical calculations, due to its simplicity and since the number of model parameters is low. Since it is a direct extension of the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian, it can readily be used to investigate the effect of anharmonicity on other polaron properties, such as the optical conductivity and the formation of bipolarons., Comment: Version 1.3

Studying the collective pairing phenomena in a two-component Fermi gas, we predict the appearance near the transition temperature $T_c$ of a well-resolved collective mode of quadratic dispersion. The mode is visible both above and below $T_c$ in the system's response to a driving pairing field. When approaching $T_c$ from below, the phononic and pair-breaking branches, characteristic of the zero temperature behavior, reduce to a very low energy-momentum region when the pair correlation length reaches its critical divergent behavior $\xi_{\rm pair}\propto|T_c-T|^{-1/2}$; elsewhere, they are replaced by the quadratically-dispersed pairing resonance, which thus acts as a precursor of the phase transition. In the strong-coupling and Bose-Einstein Condensate regime, this mode is a weakly-damped propagating mode associated to a Lorentzian resonance. Conversely, in the BCS limit it is a relaxation mode of pure imaginary eigenenergy. At large momenta, the resonance disappears when it is reabsorbed by the lower-edge of the pairing continuum. At intermediate temperatures between 0 and $T_c$, we unify the newly found collective phenomena near $T_c$ with the phononic and pair-breaking branches predicted from previous studies, and we exhaustively classify the roots of the analytically continued dispersion equation, and show that they provided a very good summary of the pair spectral functions., Comment: 44 pages, 17 figures, accepted in Physical Review A (2021)

Expanding upon previous work, using the path-integral formalism we derive expressions for the one-particle reduced density matrix and the two-point correlation function for a quadratic system of bosons that interact through a general class of memory kernels. The rotation of two-component Fermi gases and the subsequent appearance of vortices have been the subject of numerous experimental and theoretical studies. Recent experimental advances in hyperfine state-dependent potentials and highly degenerate heteronuclear Fermi gases suggest that it would be feasible to create component-dependent rotation potentials in future experiments. In this study we use an effective field theory for Fermi gases to consider the effects of rotating only one component of the Fermi gas. We find that the superfluid band gap in bulk exists up to higher rotation frequencies because the superfluid at rest, far away from the vortex, has to resist only half of the rotational effects. The vortex remains the energetically favorable state above a critical frequency but exhibits a larger core size., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Empirical distributions of wealth and income can be reproduced using simplified agent-based models of economic interactions, analogous to microscopic collisions of gas particles. Building upon these models of freely interacting agents, we explore the effect of a segregated economic network in which interactions are restricted to those between agents of similar wealth. Agents on a 2D lattice undergo kinetic exchanges with their nearest neighbours, while continuously switching places to minimize local wealth differences. A spatial concentration of wealth leads to a steady state with increased global inequality and a magnified distinction between local and global measures of combatting poverty. Individual saving propensity proves ineffective in the segregated economy, while redistributive taxation transcends the spatial inhomogeneity and greatly reduces inequality. Adding fluctuations to the segregation dynamics, we observe a sharp phase transition to lower inequality at a critical temperature, accompanied by a sudden change in the distribution of the wealthy elite.

We investigate the fermionic quasiparticle branch of superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover and calculate the quasiparticle lifetime and energy shift due to its coupling with the collective mode. The only close-to-resonance process that low-energy quasiparticles can undergo at zero temperature is the emission of a bosonic excitation from the phononic branch. Close to the minimum of the branch we find that the quasiparticles remain undamped, allowing us to compute corrections to experimentally relevant quantities such as the energy gap, location of the minimum, effective mass, and Landau critical velocity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Optical conductivity of an interacting polaron gas is calculated within an extended random phase approximation which takes into account mixing of collective excitations of the electron gas with LO phonons. This mixing is important for the optical response of strongly polar crystals where the static dielectric constant is rather high: strontium titanate is the case. The present calculation sheds light on unexplained features of experimentally observed optical conductivity spectra in $n$-doped SrTiO$_{3}$. These features appear to be due to dynamic screening of the electron-electron interaction by polar optical phonons and hence do not require additional mechanisms for the explanation., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Quantized vortices, as topological defects, play an important role in both physics and technological applications of superconductors. Normally, the nucleation of vortices requires the presence of a high magnetic field or current density, which allow the vortices to enter from the sample boundaries. At the same time, the controllable generation of individual vortices inside a superconductor is still challenging. Here, we report the controllable creation of single quantum vortices and antivortices at any desirable position inside a superconductor. We exploit the local heating effect of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip: superconductivity is locally suppressed by the tip and vortex antivortex pairs are generated when supercurrent flows around the hot spot. The experimental results are well-explained by theoretical simulations within the Ginzburg-Landau approach.

Multielectron bubbles (MEBs) in liquid helium were first observed in the late 1970s, but their properties have never been explored experimentally due to their short lifetimes. MEBs in liquid helium are predicted to have dynamic instabilities for zero or positive pressures, and stability for negative pressures. We report the production of long-lived MEBs in a novel cell filled with helium at static negative pressures. MEBs were extracted from the vapor sheath of a heated filament loop embedded in the superfluid helium and were observed by high-speed photography as they rose in the helium under buoyant forces. In earlier studies we found that MEBs created in this way had large amplitude oscillations and were unstable to decay. By creating MEBs at temperatures just under the lambda point, these oscillations are rapidly damped and the MEBs relax toward a spherical shape and stability as they rise in the helium.

Hydrogen at high temperature and pressure undergoes a phase transition from a liquid molecular phase to a conductive atomic state, or liquid metallic hydrogen, sometimes referred to as the plasma phase transition (PPT). The PPT phase line was observed in a recent experiment studying laser-pulse heated hydrogen in a diamond anvil cell in the pressure range $\sim 100 - 170 \text{GPa}$ for temperatures up to $\sim 2000 \text{K}$. The experimental signatures of the transition are (i) a negative pressure-temperature slope, (ii) a plateau in the heating curve, assumed to be related to the latent heat of transformation, and (iii) an abrupt increase in the reflectance of the sample. We present a finite element simulation that accurately takes into account the position and time dependence of the heat deposited by the laser pulse. We calculate the heating curves and the sample reflectance and transmittance. This simulation confirms that the observed plateaus are related to the phase transition, however we find that large values of latent heat are needed and may indicate that dynamics at the transition are more complex than considered in current models. Finally, experiments are proposed that can distinguish between a change in optical properties due to a transition to a metallic state or due to closure of the bandgap in molecular hydrogen., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

The dielectric function method (DFM), which uses a non-adiabatic approach to calculate the critical temperatures for superconductivity, has been quite successful in describing superconductors at low carrier densities. This regime of carrier densities causes other theories, such as BCS and Migdal-Eliashberg theory, to violate their assumption of a small Debye window. We investigate the application of DFM to the linear dispersion of single layer graphene. We derive the gap equation of DFM for a Dirac cone and calculate the critical temperature as a function of carrier density. This is done using an interaction potential that utilizes the Random Phase Approximation dielectric function and thus allows for plasmonic interactions. Our results show a significantly different behaviour of the critical temperature as a function of carrier density when compared to the BCS result. Thus, we find the DFM approach to be better suited when considering graphene systems at low carrier densities., 13 pages, 2 figures

Dark solitons in superfluid Bose gases decay through the snake instability mechanism, unless they are strongly confined. Recent experiments in superfluid Fermi gases have also interpreted soliton decay via this mechanism. However, we show using both an effective field numerical simulation and a perturbative analysis that there is a qualitative difference between soliton decay in the BEC and BCS regimes. On the BEC side of the interaction domain, the characteristic snaking deformations are induced by fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter, while on the BCS side, fluctuations of the phase destroy the soliton core through the formation of local Josephson currents without the presence of snaking deformations. The latter mechanism is qualitatively different from the snaking instability and this difference should be experimentally detectable.

The standard approach of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory of superconductivity is to introduce a self-consistent mean-field approximation, and a variational ansatz for the many-body ground state. The resulting mean-field Hamiltonian no longer commutes with the total number operator, and the variational search takes place in Fock space rather than in a Hilbert space of states with fixed number of particles. This is a disadvantage when studying small systems where the canonical ensemble predictions differ from the corresponding grand-canonical results. To remedy this, alternative approaches such as Richardson's method have been put forward. Here, we derive the exact many-body ground state of a model Hamiltonian corresponding to the deep-BCS or flat-band regime, without having to resort to Richardson's set of coupled nonlinear equations. This allows to write the exact many-body ground state in a way that makes the difference with the BCS variational wave function particularly clear. We show that the exact wave function consists of a superposition of many-pair states in such a way that the mean-field averaging corresponds to a summation over these many-pair states. This explains why many expectation values calculated with the BCS variational wave function give the same result as when calculated with the exact wave function, even though these wave functions are different. In the canonical (fixed-number) approach, pairing is investigated using the second-order reduced density matrix and calculating its largest eigenvalue. When interpreted as the order parameter of the superconducting state, this can be compared directly to the behavior of the mean-field gap. Finally, we show that a clear difference between the canonical approach and the BCS grand canonical estimates appears when evaluating pair condensate fluctuations as well as the pair entanglement entropy.

We study the signatures of the collective modes of a superfluid Fermi gas in its linear response functions for the order-parameter and density fluctuations in the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). We show that a resonance associated to the Popov-Andrianov (or sometimes "Higgs") mode is visible inside the pair-breaking continuum at all values of the wavevector $q$, not only in the (order-parameter) modulus-modulus response function but also in the modulus-density and density-density responses. At nonzero temperature, the resonance survives in the presence of thermally broken pairs even until the vicinity of the critical temperature $T_c$, and coexists with both the Anderson-Bogoliubov modes at temperatures comparable to the gap $\Delta$ and with the low-velocity phononic mode predicted by RPA near $T_c$. The existence of a Popov-Andrianov-"Higgs" resonance is thus a robust, generic feature of the high-energy phenomenology of pair-condensed Fermi gases, and should be accessible to state-of-the-art cold atom experiments., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Mie's theory of light scattering on spherical particles is being increasingly used in nanophotonics, and these demanding applications have laid bare some shortcomings of Mie theory in its standard formulation. One problem that deserves special attention is the electron spill-out in small metallic nanoparticles, which invalidates the assumption of an abrupt interface. Here we present an alternative derivation of Mie theory without this assumption. To avoid the usual electromagnetic boundary conditions suitable for a hard-wall interface, we set up equations for the electromagnetic potentials instead of the electric and magnetic field. We show that in the limit of a hard-wall interface, the results of the standard Mie theory are recovered. Additionally, a numerical solution scheme is proposed for the equations for the vector potential and the scalar potential. Analysis of the optical cross sections of soft-interface nanospheres shows that the absorption increases and occurs at lower frequencies as compared to hard-walled nanospheres. This effect is rather dramatic in large spheres with large spill-out, due to the disappearance of high-frequency resonance peaks.

The Leggett collective excitations for a two-band Fermi gas with s-wave pairing and Josephson interband coupling in the BCS-BEC crossover at finite temperatures are investigated within the Gaussian pair fluctuation approach. Eigenfrequencies and damping factors for Leggett modes are determined in a nonperturbative way, using the analytic continuation of the fluctuation propagator through a branch cut in the complex frequency plane, as in Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 093403 (2019). The treatment is performed beyond the low-energy expansion, which is necessary when the collective excitation energy reaches the pair-breaking continuum edge. The results are applied in particular to cold atomic gases at the orbital Feshbach resonance and in a regime far from BEC, which can be relevant for future experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The Anderson-Bogoliubov branch of collective excitations in a condensed Fermi gas is treated using the effective bosonic action of Gaussian pair fluctuations. The spectra of collective excitations are treated for finite temperature and momentum throughout the BCS-BEC crossover. Metallic nanoshells have proven to be particularly versatile, with applications in biomedical imaging and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that hybrid phonon-plasmon modes in semiconductor nanoshells offer similar advantages in the terahertz regime. We show that, depending on tm,n,nhe doping of the semiconductor shells, terahertz light absorption in these nanostructures can be resonantly enhanced due to the strong coupling between interface plasmons and phonons. A threefold to fourfold increase in the absorption peak intensity was achieved at specific values of electron concentration. Doping, as well as adapting the nanoshell radius, allowed for fine-tuning of the absorption peak frequencies.

In strontium titanate, the Frohlich electron - LO-phonon interaction dominates the electron response and can also provide superconductivity. Because of high LO-phonon frequencies in SrTiO3, the superconducting system is non-adiabatic. We demonstrate that the dielectric function approach is an adequate theoretical method for superconductivity in SrTiO3 and on the SrTiO3-LaAlO3 interface. The critical temperatures are calculated using realistic material parameters. The obtained critical temperatures are in line with experimental data both for bulk and interface superconductivity. The present method explains the observed multi-dome shape of the critical temperature in SrTiO3 as a function of the electron concentration due to multiband superconductivity.

Design and manipulation of magnetic moment arrays have been at the focus of studying the interesting cooperative physical phenomena in various magnetic systems. However, long-range ordered magnetic moments are rather difficult to achieve due to the excited states arising from the relatively weak exchange interactions between the localized moments. Here, using a nanostructured superconductor, we investigate a perfectly ordered magnetic dipole pattern with the magnetic poles having the same distribution as the magnetic charges in an artificial spin ice. The magnetic states can simply be switched on/off by applying a current flowing through nanopatterned area. Moreover, by coupling magnetic dipoles with the pinned vortex lattice, we are able to erase the positive/negative poles, resulting in a magnetic dipole pattern of only one polarity, analogous to the recently predicted vortex ice. These switchable and tunable magnetic dipole patterns open pathways for the study of exotic ordering phenomena in magnetic systems., By designing superconducting materials the behavior of supercurrents can be controlled to give different emergent behavior. Ge et al. fabricate superconducting films in which currents form geometrically frustrated magnetic dipoles that can be tuned further by coupling to a vortex lattice.

We present results for the solution of the large polaron Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian in 3 dimensions (3D) and 2 dimensions (2D) obtained via the diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC) method. Our implementation is based on the approach by Mishchenko [A. S. Mishchenko et al., Phys. Rev. B 62, 6317 (2000)]. Polaron ground state energies and effective polaron masses are successfully benchmarked with data obtained using Feynman's path integral formalism. By comparing 3D and 2D data, we verify the analytically exact scaling relations for energies and effective masses from $3\mathrm{D}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\mathrm{D}$, which provides a stringent test for the quality of DMC predictions. The accuracy of our results is further proven by providing values for the exactly known coefficients in weak- and strong-coupling expansions. Moreover, we compute polaron dispersion curves which are validated with analytically known lower and upper limits in the small-coupling regime and verify the first-order expansion results for larger couplings, thus disproving previous critiques on the apparent incompatibility of DMC with analytical results and furnishing useful reference for a wide range of coupling strengths.

We study the propagation of dispersive waves in superfluid Fermi gases in the BEC-BCS crossover. Unlike in other superfluid systems, where dispersive waves have already been studied and observed, Fermi gases can exhibit a subsonic dispersion relation for which the dispersive wave pattern appears at the tail of the wave front. We show that this property can be used to distinguish between a subsonic and a supersonic dispersion relation at unitarity., 6 pages, 5 figures

We study the phononic collective modes of the pairing field $\Delta$ and their corresponding signature in both the order-parameter and density response functions for a superfluid Fermi gas at all temperatures below $T_c$ in the collisionless regime. The spectra of collective modes are calculated within the Gaussian Pair Fluctuation approximation. We deal with the coupling of these modes to the fermionic continuum of quasiparticle-quasihole excitations by performing a non-perturbative analytic continuation of the pairing field propagator. At low temperature, we recover the known exponential temperature dependence of the damping rate and velocity shift of the Anderson-Bogoliubov branch. In the vicinity of $T_c$, we find analytically a weakly-damped collective mode whose velocity vanishes with a critical exponent of $1/2$, and whose quality factor diverges logarithmically with $T_c-T$, thereby clarifying an existing debate in the literature (Andrianov et al. Th. Math. Phys. 28, 829, Ohashi et al. J. Phys. Jap. 66, 2437). A transition between these two phononic branches is visible at intermediary temperatures, particularly in the BCS limit where the phase-phase response function displays two maxima., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

We theoretically investigate the role of multiple impurity atoms on the ground state properties of Bose polarons. The Bogoliubov approximation is applied for the description of the condensate resulting in a Hamiltonian containing terms beyond the Fr\"ohlich approximation. The many-body nature of the impurity atoms is taken into account by extending the many-body description for multiple Fr\"ohlich polarons, revealing the static structure factor of the impurities as the key quantity. Within this formalism various experimentally accessible polaronic properties are calculated such as the energy and the effective mass. These results are examined for system parameters corresponding to two recent experimental realizations of the Bose polaron, one with fermionic impurities and one with bosonic impurities., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

In the 1930s, two main paradigms for the theoretical description of ferromagnetism were developed: Heisenberg ferromagnetism of localized fermions (e.g., in a lattice), and Bloch or Stoner ferromagnetism of nonlocalized fermions (i.e., in a gas), also called itinerant ferromagnetism. Despite many theoretical predictions, itinerant ferromagnetism has remained elusive in experiments. This ferromagnetic state is predicted to occur for strong repulsive interactions, corresponding to a regime that is very challenging to describe theoretically because there are multiple competing physical effects, including superfluid pairing. In this paper, we point out that the problem of itinerant ferromagnetism for atomic Fermi gases is different from that of electron gases in metals due to the short-range nature of the interatomic interactions. We also show that the standard saddle point used to describe itinerant ferromagnetism of the electron gas in metals does not apply, because in the short-range limit of this approximation the Pauli exclusion principle is violated. As a remedy, we introduce a modified interaction pseudopotential for ultracold gases which includes both local (Hartree) and nonlocal (Fock) terms while preserving the Pauli exclusion principle in the short-range regime. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usefulness of this method to study the existence and stability of itinerant ferromagnetism in ultracold atomic gases. Lastly, we obtain the critical temperature for the ferromagnetic transition as a function of the opposite-spin interaction strength and find a rather good agreement with recent experimental results.

We demonstrate the existence of a collective excitation branch in the pair-breaking continuum of superfluid Fermi gases and BCS superconductors. At zero temperature, we analytically continue the equation on the collective mode energy in Anderson's Random Phase Approximation or Gaussian fluctuations through its branch cut associated with the continuum, and obtain the full complex dispersion relation, including in the strong coupling regime. The branch exists as long as the chemical potential $\mu$ is positive and the wave number below $\sqrt{2m\mu}/\hbar$ (with m the fermion mass). We develop a description of fermionic superfluids in terms of an effective field theory for the pairing order parameter. Our effective field theory improves on the existing Ginzburg - Landau theory for superfluid Fermi gases in that it is not restricted to temperatures close to the critical temperature. This is achieved by taking into account long-range fluctuations to all orders. The results of the present effective field theory compare well with the results obtained in the framework of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes method. The advantage of an effective field theory over Bogoliubov - de Gennes calculations is that much less computation time is required. In the second part of the paper, we extend the effective field theory to the case of a two-band superfluid. The present theory allows us to reveal the presence of two healing lengths in the two-band superfluids, to analyze the finite-temperature vortex structure in the BEC-BCS crossover, and to obtain the ground state parameters and spectra of collective excitations. For the Leggett mode our treatment provides an interpretation of the observation of this mode in two-band superconductors., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. Risk neutral probability density functions (RNDs) play a central role in assessing models for stock market behavior. However, it remains challenging to distill a realistic estimate for the RND from empirical data. In this work we introduce a novel method to infer a RND estimate from observed option prices. Our method efficiently yields a realistic rational function approximation to the RND, it is flexible w.r.t. the shape of the underlying distribution and robust in the presence of noise. To show this, we first investigate how well a method can actually retrieve a known distribution from noisy option prices. Then we consider real market data and show how our method can be used to derive a single continuously differentiable RND estimate from empirical call and put option price data.

We study the process of absorption or emission of a bosonic collective excitation by a fermionic quasiparticle in a superfluid of paired fermions. From the RPA equation of motion of the bosonic excitation annihilation operator, we obtain an expression of the coupling amplitude of this process which is limited neither to resonant processes nor to the long wavelength limit. We confirm our result by independently deriving it in the functional integral approach using the gaussian fluctuation approximation, and by comparing it in the long wavelength limit to the quantum hydrodynamic result. Last, we give a straightforward application of the coupling amplitude we obtain by calculating the lifetime of the bosonic excitations of arbitrary wave number. We find a mode quality factor that decreases from its maximum at low wave numbers and vanishes when the bosonic branch hits the pair-breaking continuum., 13 pages, 5 figures

Dilute ultracold quantum gases form an ideal and highly tunable system in which superuidity can be studied. Recently quantum turbulence in Bose-Einstein condensates was reported [PRL 103, 045310 (2009)], opening up a new experimental system that can be used to study quantum turbulence. A novel feature of this system is that vortex cores now have a finite size. This means that the vortices are no longer one dimensional features in the condensate, but that the radial behaviour and excitations might also play an important role in the study of quantum turbulence in Bose-Einstein condensates. In this paper we investigate these radial modes using a simplified variational model for the vortex core. This study results in the frequencies of the radial modes, which can be compared with the frequencies of the thoroughly studied Kelvin modes. From this comparison we find that the lowest (l=0) radial mode has a frequency in the same order of magnitude as the Kelvin modes. However the radial modes still have a larger energy than the Kelvin modes, meaning that the Kelvin modes will still constitute the preferred channel for energy decay in quantum turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

In the present article the snake instability mechanism for dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases is studied in the context of a recently developed effective field theory [S. N. Klimin et al., Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 122 (2015)]. This theoretical treatment has proven to be suitable to study stable dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional setups across the BEC-BCS crossover. In this paper the nodal plane of the stable soliton solution is perturbed by adding a transverse modulation. The numerical solution of the system of coupled nonlinear differential equations describing the amplitude of the perturbation leads to an estimate of the growth rate and characteristic length scale of the instability, which are calculated for a wide range of interaction regimes and compared to other theoretical predictions. The behavior of the maximum transverse size that the atomic cloud can have in order to preserve the stability is described across the BEC-BCS crossover. The analysis of the effects of spin imbalance on this critical length reveals a stabilization of the soliton with increasing imbalance and therefore provides the experimental community with a method to achieve the realization of stable solitons in real three-dimensional configurations, without reducing the system dimensionality.

Vortex–pinning effect plays an important role in both scientific and technological disciplines of superconductivity. However, little is known about the detailed evolution of a vortex approaching a pinning center. Using scanning Hall probe microscopy , we have directly visualized, at a microscopic level, the interaction of a single quantum vortex with pinning centers . When few adjacent pinning centers are present, the vortex can be trapped by one of them while the interaction of the vortex with the adjacent pinning centers can be tuned by varying superconducting characteristic lengths with temperature. It is found that when the vortex size is comparable to the distance between two pinning centers , the vortex deforms along the line connecting the pinning centers and the magnetic flux spreads by embracing both pinning centers , thus generating a magnetic dipole. In contrast, a vortex located on an isolated pinning center preserves its round shape up to temperatures close to the critical temperature. The experimental data are in a good agreement with theoretical simulations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau approach .

Under conditions of market equilibrium, the distribution of capital income follows a Pareto power law, with an exponent that characterizes the given equilibrium. Here, a simple taxation scheme is proposed such that the post-tax capital income distribution remains an equilibrium distribution, albeit with a different exponent. This taxation scheme is shown to be progressive, and its parameters can be simply derived from (i) the total amount of tax that will be levied, (ii) the threshold selected above which capital income will be taxed and (iii) the total amount of capital income. The latter can be obtained either by using Piketty's estimates of the capital/labor income ratio or by fitting the initial Pareto exponent. In this work dark soliton collisions in a one-dimensional superfluid Fermi gas are studied across the BEC-BCS crossover by means of a recently developed finite-temperature effective field theory [S. N. Klimin, J. Tempere, G. Lombardi, J. T. Devreese, Eur. Phys. J. B 88, 122 (2015)] . The evolution of two counter-propagating solitons is simulated numerically based on the theory's nonlinear equation of motion for the pair field. The resulting collisions are observed to introduce a spatial shift into the trajectories of the solitons. The magnitude of this shift is calculated and studied in different conditions of temperature and spin-imbalance. When moving away from the BEC-regime, the collisions are found to become inelastic, emitting the lost energy in the form of small-amplitude density oscillations. This inelasticity is quantified and its behavior analyzed and compared to the results of other works. The dispersion relation of the density oscillations is calculated and is demonstrated to show a good agreement with the spectrum of collective excitations of the superfluid.
