Next-generation electrolytes for lithium batteries must be able to conduct ions at sufficiently high current densities; yet this regime is rarely studied directly. The limiting current density of an electrolyte quantifies the highest possible rate of ion transport under an applied dc potential. Herein, we report on the limiting current density in twelve nanostructured polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO, or SEO) copolymer electrolytes. We find that the limiting current at a given salt concentration increases systematically with increasing volume fraction of the PEO block (φEO). In contrast, the effective-medium theory, commonly used to analyze conductivity in block copolymer electrolytes, predicts that limiting current is independent of φEO. To resolve this conundrum, the ionic conductivity, the mutual diffusion coefficient of the salt, and the steady-state current fraction of the block copolymer electrolytes were measured. These measurements enable predictions of limiting current with no adjustable parameters using the concentrated solution theory. We found quantitative agreement between experimentally measured limiting current densities and predictions based on the concentrated solution theory. This work sheds light on how to reliably measure and predict limiting current density in composite electrolytes.

Despite efforts to develop increasingly targeted and personalized cancer therapeutics, dosing of drugs in cancer chemotherapy is limited by systemic toxic side effects. We have designed, built, and deployed porous absorbers for capturing chemotherapy drugs from the bloodstream after these drugs have had their effect on a tumor, but before they are released into the body where they can cause hazardous side effects. The support structure of the absorbers was built using 3D printing technology. This structure was coated with a nanostructured block copolymer with outer blocks that anchor the polymer chains to the 3D printed support structure and a middle block that has an affinity for the drug. The middle block is polystyrenesulfonate which binds to doxorubicin, a widely used and effective chemotherapy drug with significant toxic side effects. The absorbers are designed for deployment during chemotherapy using minimally invasive image-guided endovascular surgical procedures. We show that the introduction of the absorbers into the blood of swine models enables the capture of 64 ± 6% of the administered drug (doxorubicin) without any immediate adverse effects. Problems related to blood clots, vein wall dissection, and other biocompatibility issues were not observed. This development represents a significant step forward in minimizing toxic side effects of chemotherapy.

We have studied the cycle life of two polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS-PEO-POSS) block copolymer electrolytes differing primarily in molecular weights and composition using lithium/polymer/lithium symmetric cells. The higher molecular weight electrolyte, labeled H, has a higher storage modulus, G el . However, the volume fraction of the conducting phase in the low molecular weight electrolyte, labeled L, is higher and this leads to a four-fold increase in limiting current density, i L. Measurement of ionic conductivity provides insight into the reason for the observed differences in limiting current density. The average lifetime of symmetric cells with electrolyte L was slightly higher than that of cells with electrolyte H. The combined effect of mechanical and electrochemical properties of electrolytes on the stability of lithium electrodeposition was quantified by examining two dimensionless parameters, i/i L and G el /G Li , introduced in the theory developed by Barai and Srinivasan [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 19, 20493–20505 (2017)]. This theory predicts the regime of stable lithium electrodeposition as a function of these two parameters. Despite large differences in G el and i L between the two electrolytes, we show that similar cell lifetimes are consistent with the theoretical predictions of unstable lithium electrodeposition without resorting to any adjustable parameters.

We present an operando study of the discharge of a solid-state Li-S cell using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In theory, the average chain length of the polysulfides, xavg,cell, at a given depth of discharge is determined by the number of electrons delivered to the sulfur cathode. The dependence of xavg,cell measured by XAS on the depth of discharge is in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. XAS is also used to track the formation of Li2S, the final discharge product, as a function of depth of discharge. The XAS measurements were used to estimate rate constants of a series of simple reactions commonly accepted in literature.

The design and engineering of composite materials is one strategy to satisfy the materials needs of systems with multiple orthogonal property requirements. In the case of rechargeable batteries with lithium metal anodes, the system requires a separator with fast lithium ion transport and good mechanical strength. In this work, we focus on the system polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (SEO) with bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI). Ion transport occurs in the salt-containing poly(ethylene oxide)-rich domains. Mechanical rigidity arises due to the glassy nature of polystyrene (PS). If we assume that the salt does not interact with the PS-rich domains, we can describe ion transport in the electrolyte by three transport parameters (ionic conductivity, κ, salt diffusion coefficient, D, and cation transference number, t+0) and a thermodynamic factor, Tf. By systematically varying the volume fraction of the conducting phase, ϕc between 0.29 and 1.0, and chain length, N between 80 and 8000, we elucidate the role of morphology on ion transport. We find that κ is the strongest function of morphology, varying by three full orders of magnitude, while D is a weaker function of morphology. To calculate t+0 and Tf, we measure the current fraction, ρ+, and the open circuit potential, U, of concentration cells. We find that ρ+ and U follow universal trends as a function of salt concentration, regardless of chain length, morphology, or ϕc, allowing us to calculate t+0 for any SEO/LiTFSI or PEO/LiTFSI mixture when κ and D are known. The framework developed in this paper enables predicting the performance of any block copolymer electrolyte in a rechargeable battery.

There is a growing demand for higher energy density lithium batteries. One approach for addressing this demand is enabling lithium metal anodes. However, nucleation and growth of electronically conductive protrusions, which cause short circuits, prevent the use of this technology with liquid electrolytes. The use of rigid solid electrolytes such as polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) electrolytes is one solution. An additional requirement for practical cells is needed to use electrolytes with high salt concentration to maximize the flux of lithium ions in the cell. The first systematic study of the effect of salt concentration on the morphology of electrodeposited lithium through a rigid block copolymer electrolyte is presented. The nature, areal density, and morphologies of defective lithium deposits created during galvanostatic cycling of lithium-lithium symmetric cells were determined using hard X-ray microtomography. Cycle life decreases rapidly with increasing salt concentration. X-ray microtomography reveals the presence of multiglobular protrusions, which are nucleated at impurity particles at low salt concentrations; here, the areal density of defective lithium deposits was independent of salt concentration. At the highest salt concentration, this density increases abruptly by a factor of about 10, and defects were also nucleated at locations where no impurities were visible.

Successful prevention of lithium dendrite growth would enable the use of lithium metal as an anode material in next-generation rechargeable batteries. Mechanically stiff block copolymer electrolytes have been shown to prolong the life of lithium metal cells by partially suppressing lithium dendrite growth. However, impurity particles that are invariably present in the lithium metal nucleate electrodeposition defects that eventually lead to short circuits. In this study, we use X-ray tomography to study the morphology of electrodeposited lithium in symmetric cells containing a block copolymer electrolyte. An "electrochemical filtering" treatment was performed on these cells to reduce the concentration of impurity particles near the electrode-electrolyte interface, and cells were cycled to determine the effects of the treatment on lifetime. Depending on the treatment details, the average charge passed before failure was improved by 30-400%. For a cell in which the treatment was most effective, the cycle life was increased by more than an order of magnitude, and the measured number of deposition defects per area was negligible. Other treated cells, however, in which the treated lithium was imperfect, had a higher number of deposition defects per area compared to control cells. A majority of the deposition defects in treated cells were confined within the electrodes. In contrast, most of the deposition defects seen in the control cells were protrusions that invaded the electrolyte phase. The increased lifetime in these imperfectly treated cells was not due to a reduction in the number of deposition defects per area, but rather due to the differences in defect morphology. These results motivate the development of deposition defect- and impurity-free lithium metal electrodes.

The viability of next generation lithium and beyond-lithium battery technologies hinges on the development of electrolytes with improved performance. Comparing electrolytes is not straightforward as multiple electrochemical parameters affect the performance of an electrolyte. Additional complications arise due to the formation of concentration gradients in response to dc potentials. We propose a modified version of Ohm's law to analyze current through binary electrolytes driven by a small dc potential. We show that the proportionality constant in Ohm's law is given by the product of the ionic conductivity, κ, and the ratio of currents in the presence (iss) and absence (iΩ) of concentration gradients, ρ+. The importance of ρ+ was recognized by Evans et al. [Polymer 28, 2324 (1987)]. The product κρ+ is used to rank order a collection of electrolytes. Ideally, both κ and ρ+ should be maximized, but we observe a trade-off between these two parameters, resulting in an upper bound. This trade-off is analogous to the famous Robeson upper bound for permeability and selectivity in gas separation membranes. Designing polymer electrolytes that overcome this trade-off is an ambitious but worthwhile goal.

The formation of dendrites and other protrusions on lithium metal anodes is a subject of continued interest due to the potential to incorporate these anodes in next-generation rechargeable batteries with increased energy densities. Solid polymer electrolytes show improved stability against lithium metal compared to liquid carbonate electrolytes. We have studied the effect of salt concentration on the formation of protrusions formed on electrodeposited lithium through a rigid block copolymer electrolyte, polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO or SEO), in a lithium‑lithium symmetric cell. The cell lifetime decreases by a factor of 100 when salt concentration is increased by a factor of 5. Our main objective is to understand the reason for this observation. We show that this decrease is not due to a salt-induced change of the morphology of the block-copolymer electrolyte, nor is it due to a salt-induced change of mechanical properties. We use an approach based on Newman's concentrated solution theory to fully characterize ion transport in the block-copolymer electrolyte, and report the conductivity, salt diffusion coefficient, cation transference number, and thermodynamic factor. Neither cell lifetime nor protrusion density in failed cells correlate with any of these electrochemical parameters. However, the electrochemical parameters can be used to predict salt concentration profiles in our symmetric cells. We posit that an important parameter in protrusion growth is the magnitude of the salt concentration gradient, ∆. We observe a direct correlation between ∆ and lithium protrusion growth.

We have measured the limiting current in lithium-lithium symmetric cells with a standard polymer electrolyte, a mixture of poly(ethylene oxide) and lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonamide salt at 90°C. The cells were polarized with increasing current density. The steady-state cell potential was a smooth function of current density until the limiting current was exceeded. An abrupt increase in cell potential was taken as an experimental signature of the limiting current. The electrolyte mixture was fully characterized using electrochemical methods to determine the conductivity, salt diffusion coefficient, cation transference number, and thermodynamic factor as a function of salt concentration. We used Newman’s concentrated solution theory to predict both cell potential and salt concentration profiles as functions of position in the cell at the experimentally applied current density. The theoretical limiting current was taken to be the current at which the calculated salt concentration at the cathode was zero. We see quantitative agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for the limiting current. This agreement is obtained without resorting to any adjustable parameters.

We present experimental results on the phase behavior of block copolymer/salt mixtures over a wide range of copolymer compositions, molecular weights, and salt concentrations. The experimental system comprises polystyrene- block-poly(ethylene oxide) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. It is well established that LiTFSI interacts favorably with poly(ethylene oxide) relative to polystyrene. The relationship between chain length and copolymer composition at fixed temperature is U-shaped, as seen in experiments on conventional block copolymers and as anticipated from the standard self-consistent field theory (SCFT) of block copolymer melts. The phase behavior can be explained in terms of an effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between the polystyrene monomers and poly(ethylene oxide) monomers complexed with the salt, χeff, which increases linearly with salt concentration. The phase behavior of salt-containing block copolymers, plotted on a segregation strength versus copolymer composition plot, is similar to that of conventional (uncharged) block copolymer melts, when the parameter χeff replaces χ in segregation strength.

It is known that the addition of salts to symmetric block copolymers leads to stabilization of ordered phases and an increase in domain spacing; both trends are consistent with an increase in the effective Flory-Huggins interaction parameter between the blocks, χ. In this work, we show that the addition of salt to a disordered asymmetric block copolymer first leads to the formation of coexisting ordered phases which give way to a reentrant disordered phase at a higher salt concentration. The coexisting phases are both body centered cubic (BCC) with different domain spacings, stabilized by partitioning of the salt. Further increase in salt concentration results in yet another disorder-to-order transition; hexagonally packed cylinders are obtained in the high salt concentration limit. The coexisting phases formed at intermediate salt concentration, elucidated by electron tomography, showed the absence of macroscopic regions with distinct BCC lattices. A different asymmetric block copolymer with composition in the vicinity of the sample described above only showed only a single disorder-to-order transition. However, the dependence of domain spacing on salt concentration was distinctly non-monotonic, and similar to that of the sample with the reentrant phase behavior. This dependence appears to be an announcement of reentrant phase transitions in asymmetric block copolymer electrolytes. These results cannot be mapped on to the traditional theory of block copolymer electrolyte self-assembly based on an effective χ.

In this study, a lithium electrode with globular protrusions was stripped electrochemically, and the local morphology of the electrode as a function of time was determined by hard X-ray tomography. We demonstrate that globules are preferentially stripped compared to a planar electrode in our system, which incorporates a nanostructured block copolymer electrolyte. We report current density at the electrode as a function of micron-scale position and time. The local current density during the electrode healing process calculated from a reference frame at the electrode/electrolyte interface provides insight into the driving forces responsible for selective stripping of the globule. These results imply the possibility of discharging protocols that may return a lithium electrode to its initial planar state.

Successful prevention of lithium dendrite growth would enable the use of lithium metal as an anode material in next-generation secondary batteries. Mechanically stiff solid polymer electrolytes have been shown to prolong the life of lithium metal cells by partially suppressing lithium dendrite growth. However, we lack fundamental knowledge about the nature of lithium electrodeposition and stripping as a function of time, as direct observation of this phenomenon is non-trivial. Synchrotron X-ray microtomography was used observe lithium metal plating and stripping through these solid polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide)-LiTFSI electrolyte membranes in the vicinity of lithium protrusions. Local current density was calculated from these experimental measurements and mapped on the top and bottom electrode under conditions of lithium metal plating and stripping. Local current density at one electrode was correlated to local current density at the other electrode and to electrode thickness. We show quantitatively how lithium protrusions are stripped at a faster rate than planar lithium and gain insight into the lithium ion transport governing protruding lithium growth in a cycled lithium metal electrode.

It is now commonplace to report the data obtained during cycling of symmetric lithium-electrolyte-lithium cells with solid polymer electrolytes. The parameter that is usually the focus is the number of cycles prior to cell failure. Quantitative prediction of cell failure is a daunting task. As a step toward that aim, we seek to predict the potential needed to cycle such cells at a function of the applied current density. We show that such predictions cannot be made on the basis of conductivity alone. The importance of complete characterization of polymer electrolytes will be discussed. This includes determination of the thermodynamic factor, salt diffusion coefficient and transference number using Newman’s concentrated solution theory. The connection between these parameters and dendrite growth is being explored. If new results are obtained, I will present them at the meeting.

A series of diblock copolymers of high modulus and molecular weight were synthesized, and their nanostructures and electrochemical properties were characterized as a function of polymer composition and lithium salt concentration, including measurements of the limiting current. X-ray tomography was used to observe lithium metal plating and cycling through these solid polymer electrolyte membranes under a range of electrochemical conditions. Insight into the interplay between electrochemical and mechanical properties, polymer microstructure, and lithium electrodeposition morphology will aid in the design of next-generation electrolytes.

In a society increasingly concerned by its impact on the environment and the urgent issue of climate change, there is great demand for an energy storage device with higher energy density and power capability (especially for electric vehicles and power grid). The use of the high energy density lithium metal anode jointly with a solid polymer electrolyte could enable the development of large-scale battery applications. Yet, dendritic lithium formation leading to short circuit currently limits its practical applications. Therefore, understanding the fundamentals of dendrite nucleation and growth is necessary to design robust battery systems. In this work, the nucleation and growth of lithium dendrite is studied in function of salt concentration in lithium-lithium symmetric cells in a rigorous manner. Complete electrochemical characterization of a solid block copolymer polystyrene-polyethylene oxide mixed with lithium salt (LiTFSI) will be presented, as well as the cell lifetime under galvanostatic cycling. We have discovered an unexpected relationship between cell lifetime and salt concentration. X-ray micro-tomography was used to underpin the relationship between salt concentration and dendrite nucleation and morphology.
