Highly mobile predators can show strong numerical responses to pulsed resources, sometimes resulting in irruptions where large numbers of young invade landscapes at a continental scale. High production of young in irruption years may have a strong influence on the population dynamics unless immature survival is reduced compared to non-irruption years. This could occur if subordinate individuals (mainly immatures) are forced into suboptimal habitats due to density-dependent effects in irruption years. To test whether irruptive individuals had lower survival than non-irruptive ones, we combined necropsy results (N = 365) with telemetry (N = 185) from more than 20 years to record timing and causes of mortality in snowy owls (Bubo scandiacus), which irrupt into eastern North America during winter following high breeding output caused by lemming peaks in the Arctic. Mortality was more than four times higher in irruption years than non-irruption years, but only for immatures, and occurred disproportionately in early winter for immatures, but not adults. Mortality was also higher in eastern North America, where owl abundance fluctuates considerably between years, compared to core winter regions of the Arctic and Prairies where populations are more stable. Most mortality was not due to starvation, but rather associated with human activity, especially vehicle collisions. We conclude that immature snowy owls that irrupt into eastern North America are limited by density-dependent factors, such as increased competition forcing individuals to occupy risky human-altered habitats. For highly mobile, irruptive animals, resource pulses may have a limited impact on population dynamics due to low subsequent survival of breeding output during the nonbreeding season., (© 2021. The quality of research animal welfare is undeniably linked to the quality of scientific results generated from the animals. Although mice are the most commonly used mammalian species in biomedical research, little information is available about what factors should be considered to promote future progress. To address this issue, the Animal Welfare Committee of the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners (ASLAP) surveyed laboratory animal veterinarians to obtain their opinions about the welfare of mice and to consider the roles of 5 factors that significantly affect animal welfare in biomedical research: husbandry, clinical care, experimental use, regulatory oversight, and training. The survey revealed that 95% of veterinarians scored mouse welfare as acceptable to excellent, although areas for improvement remain. These areas include: 1) training of researchers performing experimental procedures; 2) the frequency of monitoring mice likely to experience pain and distress due to experimental manipulation; 3) inclusion of the institutional veterinary staff in the monitoring of mice likely to experience pain and distress; 4) continued improvement in the environmental enrichment provided to mice; 5) the ability of the IACUC to ensure that instances of noncompliance are fully addressed in order to prevent reoccurrence both within laboratories and among other research groups at the institution; and 6) reliance on non-veterinarians to perform examinations, diagnose disease, and prescribe the treatment of sick or injured mice.

Migratory species display a range of migration patterns between irruptive (facultative) to regular (obligate), as a response to different predictability of resources. In the Arctic, snow directly influences resource availability. The causes and consequences of different migration patterns of migratory species as a response to the snow conditions remains however unexplored. Birds migrating to the Arctic are expected to follow the spring snowmelt to optimise their arrival time and select for snow-free areas to maximise prey encounter en-route. Based on large-scale movement data, we compared the migration patterns of three top predator species of the tundra in relation to the spatio-temporal dynamics of snow cover. The snowy owl, an irruptive migrant, the rough-legged buzzard, with an intermediary migration pattern, and the peregrine falcon as a regular migrant, all followed, as expected, the spring snowmelt during their migrations. However, the owl stayed ahead, the buzzard stayed on, and the falcon stayed behind the spatio-temporal peak in snowmelt. Although none of the species avoided snow-covered areas, they presumably used snow presence as a cue to time their arrival at their breeding grounds. We show the importance of environmental cues for species with different migration patterns.

Infrared thermometry (IRTM) is a noncontact method to measure temperature. The purpose of this study was to compare rectal temperature and IRTM in healthy anesthetized swine, with the hypothesis that IRTM would be an accurate, noninvasive alternative for rectal temperature measurement. Two groups of female Yorkshire-cross swine ( n = 14 and n = 12) were sedated with Tiletamine-zolazepam (0.5 mg/kg) for blood collection during a routine physical examination. While sedated, rectal temperatures were measured using a SureTemp Plus 690 (Welch Allyn) and IRTM measurements were taken using a FLIR E5 thermal imaging camera. The 2 anatomic sites used for thermography measurements were the area surrounding the eye and the neck at the base of the ear. The distance from the imaging camera and the animal during IRTM measurements was 24 to 32 inches, a distance that would allow camera access in a standard swine enclosure. The infrared imaging camera's surface temperature measurement exhibited a proportional bias when compared with the rectal temperature. All rectal temperature measurements were between 98.7 °F to 101.3 °F, with a mean temperature of 100.4 °F. IRTM tended to underestimate rectal temperatures at lower values, and overestimate rectal temperatures at higher values by approximately (+) or (-) 0.8 °F of rectal temperature. Infrared thermometry can provide a quick noninvasive assessment of the body surface temperature, without the need for animal handling or restraint, but should not be considered an accurate replacement for rectal temperature measurement.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of a nutrition intervention program for geriatric nutritional at-risk patients., Design: A randomized controlled trial., Setting: Department of geriatric medicine in a university hospital and in the primary healthcare sector, Copenhagen., Subjects: Geriatric patients ( N = 144) at nutritional risk., Intervention: The intervention consisted of an individual dietary plan for home, including pre-discharge advice on nutritional intake, combined with three follow-up visits after discharge (one, four, and eight weeks)., Main Measures: Change in body weight, Barthel Index, hand-grip strength and self-rated health from baseline (discharge) to three months after discharge, readmission, and mortality (90 and 120 days)., Results: The mean (SD) age in total sample was 87.2 (6.2) years. Sample size in the intervention group (IG) was N = 72, and in the control group (CG), N = 72. IG had a mean (SD) weight gain of 0.9 (4.2) kg compared to a weight loss of 0.8 (3.6) kg in the CG ( P = 0.032). In addition, an improvement in self-rated health was seen in the IG compared to CG (IG: 23 (47%) vs. CG: 12 (24%); P = 0.021). No significant difference between groups was found in functional status, mortality, or readmission rates., Conclusion: An individual dietary plan based on everyday food, combined with three follow-up visits (one, four, and eight weeks) after discharge, led to an improvement in nutritional status and self-rated health in geriatric patients.

The development of an effective pharmacological countermeasure is needed to reduce the morbidity and mortality in military and civilian populations associated with possible exposure to ionizing radiation. Previous studies in mice have shown that a single subcutaneous (sc) injection of the natural steroid androst-5-ene-3beta,17beta-diol (5-androstenediol, 5-AED), 24-48 h prior to a lethal dose of whole-body (60)Co gamma radiation, stimulated hematopoiesis and enhanced survival. These effects are consistent with our previous observation of 5-AED-induced elevations in circulating G-CSF in normal and irradiated mice. The purpose of this study was to obtain data on the pharmacokinetics of 5-AED after sc and buccal administration to mice, and to determine whether cytokine genes are induced by sc 5-AED in hematopoietic tissues (bone marrow, spleen). We studied effects on serum cytokines and chemokines, and also analyzed the pharmacokinetics of 5-AED after sc administration and compared it with buccal delivery. 5-AED was administered 24 h before irradiation or sham-irradiation. Cytokine mRNAs were quantified by quantitative real-time PCR (QRT-PCR), and cytokine levels in serum by multiplex Luminex. 5-AED administration was associated with elevation of message for GM-CSF, IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, and IL-10 in spleen, and GM-CSF and IL-2 in bone marrow. Irradiation enhanced G-CSF, GM-CSF, IFN-gamma, TPO, IL-2, IL-3, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-12 in spleen, and GM-CSF, IFN-gamma, TPO, IL-3, and IL-10 in bone marrow. Serum levels of G-CSF were significantly elevated in 5-AED-treated mice 4 h after irradiation or sham-irradiation. Serum macrophage inflammatory protein-1gamma (MIP-1gamma) was significantly elevated 4 h after irradiation in 5-AED-treated mice. Plasma 5-AED peaked 2 h after sc injection (30 mg/kg), and remained significantly above control after 4 days, but not 8 days. The time course of plasma 5-AED after buccal delivery (60 mg/kg) was similar, but levels were significantly lower compared to sc delivery. Plasma 5-AED 24 h after administration was not significantly different between sc and buccal delivery. However, in contrast to many studies showing enhanced survival after sc administration of 5-AED, we found no effect on survival of buccal 5-AED. The results suggest that radioprotection is not dependent on the 5-AED concentration at the time of irradiation, but rather on events triggered during the first few hours after administration. The current results suggest that further studies are warranted to directly test the roles of cytokines in the radioprotective effects of 5-AED.

Normal hematologic values for African green monkeys have been reported, but these results are confounded by the effect of chemical restraint (for example, ketamine), physical restraint, and capture stress. The dual-lumen central venous catheter, jacket, and tether combination we describe here allows intravenous fluid administration and repeated blood sampling without the use of anesthesia or inducing capture-related stress. The use of a low-concentration heparin solution for catheter maintenance significantly increased the mean patency time, compared with a saline-only catheter flush solution. Adding a low-concentration heparin solution creates a suitable system for serial blood collection in the African green monkey for as long as 25 d.

The induction and maintenance of general anesthesia can lead to profound alterations of many organ systems, especially the cardiovascular, pulmonary, and nervous systems. Moreover, distinct from their cardiopulmonary effects, certain anesthetics can induce physiologic and behavioral changes, which may persist after recovery from anesthesia. Knowledge of the effects of anesthesia and anesthetic agents on hematologic measurements is important. Although the effects of anesthesia were clinically unapparent, the effect on levels of circulating blood elements was an important determinant for the results of our study. We sought to evaluate the effect of anesthesia and vehicle injection on the levels of circulating blood elements in C3H/HeN male mice. We used an automated hematology system to obtain complete blood counts with differentials in anesthetized and unanesthetized mice receiving subcutaneous injections of polyethylene glycol (PEG-400). Two days after a 30-min exposure to isoflurane anesthesia, mean white blood cell counts had deceased by 15.4%, mean neutrophil counts had decreased by 26.9%, and mean platelet counts by 11.2% compared with levels in unanesthetized mice.
