From the 1970s to date, accumulating data highlighted the importance of NK cells in host immune response against cancer and in therapy-induced antitumor response. The recognition and the lysis of tumor cells by NK cells are regulated by a complex balance of inhibitory and activating signals. This review summarizes NK cell mechanisms to kill cancer cells, their role in host immune responses against tumor growth or metastasis, and their implications in antitumor immunotherapies via cytokines, antibodies, or in combination with other therapies. Abstract

The origin of the diverse population of galaxy clusters remains an unexplained aspect of large-scale structure formation and cluster evolution. We present a novel method of using X-ray images to identify cool core (CC), weak cool core (WCC), and non cool core (NCC) clusters of galaxies, that are defined by their central cooling times. We employ a convolutional neural network, ResNet-18, which is commonly used for image analysis, to classify clusters. We produce mock Chandra X-ray observations for a sample of 318 massive clusters drawn from the IllustrisTNG simulations. The network is trained and tested with low resolution mock Chandra images covering a central 1 Mpc square for the clusters in our sample. Without any spectral information, the deep learning algorithm is able to identify CC, WCC, and NCC clusters, achieving balanced accuracies (BAcc) of 92%, 81%, and 83%, respectively. The performance is superior to classification by conventional methods using central gas densities, with an average BAcc = 81%, or surface brightness concentrations, giving BAcc = 73%. We use Class Activation Mapping to localize discriminative regions for the classification decision. From this analysis, we observe that the network has utilized regions from cluster centers out to r~300 kpc and r~500 kpc to identify CC and NCC clusters, respectively. It may have recognized features in the intracluster medium that are associated with AGN feedback and disruptive major mergers., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

IntroductionHealth profession schools have acknowledged the need for a diverse workforce by increasing diversity in recruitment, but little has been done to build inclusive excellence in learning environments. Microaggressions and other forms of mistreatment can increase stress levels and depression and negatively impact academic performance. To increase student performance, retention, and wellness, mitigating microaggressions is needed to promote an inclusive culture.MethodsWe designed this workshop as a framework to think critically about microaggressions, how they impact the health professions academic environment, and how administrators, faculty, and students can promote inclusion excellence. The workshop included a presentation discussing microaggression theory, seven cases describing microaggressions in the health professions education environment, and discussion and facilitator guides. Cases were based on prior research conducted by the primary author and upon interactions authors shared from their professional experience. Participants completed pre- and postsurveys.ResultsDuring six workshops at three different institutions, 138 out of 190 participants (73% response rate), including nursing and medicine faculty, students, and leadership, completed the pre- and postsurveys. Pre- and posttraining measurements found statistically significant improvements in participants' knowledge of the impact of microaggressions, self-efficacy in responding to microaggressions, and commitment to being an active bystander in the face of microaggressions. Participants were highly satisfied with the training.DiscussionThis humanistic, case-based learning curriculum allows facilitators to guide faculty, student, and leadership conversations to build skills to promote inclusion excellence through preventing microaggressions, repairing and reestablishing relationships, and restoring reputations once microaggressions occur.

Abstract

Presented in this paper are measurements of an optomechanical device in which various acoustic modes of a sample of superfluid helium couple to a fiber-based optical cavity. In contrast with recent work on the paraxial acoustic mode confined by the cavity mirrors, we focus specifically on the acoustic modes associated with the helium surrounding the cavity. This paper provides a framework for understanding how the acoustic modes depend on device geometry. The acoustic modes are observed using the technique of optomechanically induced transparency/amplification. Abstract

Optomechanical systems couple an electromagnetic cavity to a mechanical resonator which is typically formed from a solid object. The range of phenomena accessible to these systems depends on the properties of the mechanical resonator and on the manner in which it couples to the cavity fields. In both respects, a mechanical resonator formed from superfluid liquid helium offers several appealing features: low electromagnetic absorption, high thermal conductivity, vanishing viscosity, well-understood mechanical loss, and in situ alignment with cryogenic cavities. In addition, it offers degrees of freedom that differ qualitatively from those of a solid. Here, we describe an optomechanical system consisting of a miniature optical cavity filled with superfluid helium. The cavity mirrors define optical and mechanical modes with near-perfect overlap, resulting in an optomechanical coupling rate ~3 kHz. This coupling is used to drive the superfluid; it is also used to observe the superfluid's thermal motion, resolving a mean phonon number as low as 11., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures (including supplementary information). The performance of programmable voltage signals that exploit the quantum behavior of superconducting Josephson junctions continues to improve and enhance measurements in metrology, communications, and quantum control. We review advances in pulse-driven digital synthesis techniques with Josephson-junction-based devices. Quantum-based synthesis of voltage waveforms has been demonstrated at frequencies up to 3 GHz and rms amplitudes up to 4 V. In this paper we study a system consisting of two nearly degenerate mechanical modes that couple to a single mode of an optical cavity. We show that this coupling leads to nearly complete (99.5%) hybridization of the two mechanical modes into a bright mode that experiences strong optomechanical interactions and a dark mode that experiences almost no optomechanical interactions. Abstract

We describe an optomechanical device consisting of a fiber-based optical cavity containing a silicon nitiride membrane. In comparison with typical free-space cavities, the fiber-cavity's small mode size (10 {\mu}m waist, 80 {\mu}m length) allows the use of smaller, lighter membranes and increases the cavity-membrane linear coupling to 3 GHz/nm and quadratic coupling to 20 GHz/nm^2. This device is also intrinsically fiber-coupled and uses glass ferrules for passive alignment. These improvements will greatly simplify the use of optomechanical systems, particularly in cryogenic settings. Abstract

We measure the noise added by an atomic point contact operated as a displacement detector. With a microwave technique, we increase the measurement speed of atomic point contacts by a factor of 500. The measurement is then fast enough to detect the resonant motion of a nanomechanical beam at frequencies up to 60 MHz and sensitive enough to observe the random thermal motion of the beam at 250 mK. We demonstrate a shot-noise limited imprecision of $2.3\pm0.1\ \mathrm{fm/\sqrt{Hz}}$ and observe a $78\pm20 \mathrm{aN/\sqrt{Hz}}$ backaction force, yielding a total uncertainty in the beam's displacement that is $42\pm9$ times the standard quantum limit., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Achtergrond Religieuze copingstijlen laten zien hoe mensen omgaan met stressvolle gebeurtenissen vanuit hun religieuze achtergrond en geloofsrelatie met God. Doel Inzicht krijgen in hoe het religieuze copingproces samenhangt met de mentale gezondheid en toetsen of het gebruik van de copingstijlen verschilt voor christenen die wel/niet ggz-cliënt zijn.Methode De onderzoeksgroep bestond uit 655 Nederlandse personen met een christelijke levensbeschouwing. De leeftijd varieerde van 18 tot 79 jaar (M: 42,6; SD: 14,2), 60,9% was vrouw en 49,5% had minimaal een hbo-opleiding. Intra- en extramurale ggz-cliënten waren betrokken. Het betrof een crosssectionele online-enquête, gecombineerd met een bestaand cliëntendatabestand. Resultaten Een meer samenwerkende copingstijl ging gepaard met minder psychische klachten. Hoe meer de (passief-)afwachtende en zelfbesturende copingstijl werd gebruikt, hoe meer psychische klachten. Christelijke ggz-cliënten maakten significant minder gebruik van de samenwerkende en afwachtende religieuze copingstijl dan christelijke niet-ggz-cliënten. Conclusie De samenwerkende religieuze copingstijl hangt samen met een betere mentale gezondheid. Ggz-cliënten hanteren deze stijl minder dan niet-ggz-cliënten. Bewustwording van religieuze copingstijlen bij en passende ondersteuning door ggz-professionals zijn geïndiceerd.

20. Building the urban jungle: how geoengineered green spaces affect the urban microclimate

Abstract

The threats posed by climate variability and change have spurred the development of several innovative geoengineering techniques, including nature-based solutions. This involves the manipulation or imitation of natural systems within and around urban grey infrastructure, to mitigate anthropogenic impacts. Recent studies have proposed nature-based solutions as a possible strategy for both mitigation and adaptation against climate variability and change. Several studies observed a cooling effect through nature-based solutions which mayinfluencethe urban heat island effect. The significance of this geoengineering technique on the urban microclimate has, however, not yet been well-established. Subsequently, this study seeks to investigate the significance of nature-based solutions in affecting the urban microclimate. Specifically, this study conducts a comparison of the surface temperatures in select urban areas with those in the surrounding rural environment. The temperatures are determined by examining ground-based observations from weather stations.Additionally, these urban areas are classified according to their vegetation cover, and the results for the identified green and grey cities are compared to determine whether significant differences in surface temperature exist. 21. Monsters, Microbiology and Mathematics: The Epidemiology of a Zombie Apocalypse

Abstract

The aim of this learning exercise was to harness current interest in zombies in order to educate audiences about the epidemiology of infectious disease. Participants in the activity were provided with an outbreak scenario, which they then used as the basis of play-based activities. By considering the mode and speed of transmission, size of outbreak and prevention/control strategy, participant groups were able to define parameters of their outbreak scenario. These were then input to SimZombie, a computer simulation program developed by the authors, which visually demonstrated the spread of infection through a population. The resulting animations were then used as the basis of in-depth discussion which, in turn, enabled the consideration of principles of disease transmission and control strategies. The activity provided an opportunity to engage a range of audiences through a variety of different delivery mechanisms, including role play, workshops and informal drop-in. Learning was evidenced by participation and feedback.

Abstract

Emotional complexity (EC) involves the ability to distinguish between distinct emotions (differentiation) and the experience of a large range of emotions (diversity). Lower EC has been related to psychopathology in cross-sectional studies. This study aimed to investigate (a) whether EC prospectively predicts psychopathology and (b) whether this effect is contingent on stressful life events. To further explore EC, we compared the effects of differentiation and diversity. Adolescents from the general population (N = 401) rated 8 negatively valenced emotions 10 times a day for 6 consecutive days. Further, they completed the Symptom Checklist-90 (baseline and 1-year follow-up) and a questionnaire on past year's life events at follow-up. Logistic regression analyses tested whether EC-reflected by emotion differentiation (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]) and diversity (diversity index [DI])-predicted prognosis (good: remitting or lacking symptoms vs. bad: worsening or persisting symptoms). EC predicted prognoses but only when based on the ICC (OREC.ICC = 1.42, p = .02). An ECICC 1 SD above average increased the probability of good prognosis from .67 to .74. This effect was not related to stressful life events (OREC x Life events = 1.03, p = .86) and disappeared when emotion intensity (mean level) was taken into account (OREC = 1.20, p = .20). Predicting future prognosis does not necessitate complex measures of emotional experience (ICC, DI) but rather might be achieved through simpler indices (mean). The discrepant effects of the ICC and DI on prognosis suggest that impaired emotion representation (ICC) plays a more important role in vulnerability to mental ill health than does low diversity of emotions (DI).

29. Conferences as Learning Communities: Some Early Lessons in Using 'Back-Channel' Technologies at an Academic Conference--Distributed Intelligence or Divided Attention?

Abstract

Most, if not all, researchers attend conferences as a part of their practice, and yet it is an under-researched activity. Little attention has been paid either to developing a theoretically informed understanding of conference practice as knowledge building, or to assessing the extent to which conferences are successful. This paper addresses these issues in the context of a small empirical study of the introduction of mobile, interactive ("back-channel") technologies into a conference setting. Science studies and learning theories literatures are used to develop an eight-point statement describing the aims of an idealised conference. This is then used as a framework through which to make sense of what happened when "back-channel" technologies such as internet relay chat (IRC) and blogging were introduced into the 2004 Colston Symposium "The Evolution of Learning and Web Technologies: Survival of the Fittest?". Focusing on sequential issues and the conference as a forum for knowledge building, the analysis shows that conference order is disrupted by the introduction of the back-channel technologies. Nevertheless, other pressures on academic and professional practice (the governance agenda, calls for greater collaboration and a more consensual approach, and so on) suggest that the potential of the new technologies to help open up the black box of scientific and professional practice will be seen as increasingly important. If these tools are to be used effectively in the future, conferences will need to be supported by new skills and practices.

Een kernvraag in de positieve psychologie is hoe welbevinden doelbewust kan worden versterkt. Naast het ontwikkelen van kennis representeert die vraag ook de ambitie om mensen effectief te ondersteunen bij hun streven naar welbevinden. Een veelgenoemde kerntaak van positieve psychologen is dan ook het ontwikkelen van positief-psychologische interventies, en het bedenken, ontwikkelen, testen en implementeren van zulke interventies valt onder de noemer ‘ontwerpen’. Bij het woord ‘ontwerper’ denkt u wellicht aan iemand die producten ontwerpt, of iets anders tastbaars, zoals gebouwen, kleding of apps, of aan mensen met een ontwerpopleiding die creativiteit tot hun beroep hebben gemaakt. Maar uiteindelijk zijn we allemaal ontwerpers. Het creëren van elke interventie – of het nu gaat om een wet, een organisatiestructuur, een beleidsmaatregel, een lesprogramma, een therapievorm of een individueel coachingsprogramma – vereist creativiteit, vindingrijkheid en ontwerpvaardigheden. Kortom, ook u bent een ontwerper. In dit hoofdstuk bespreken we ontwerpen als een gestructureerde en systematische activiteit in relatie tot de positieve psychologie. Abstract

MOTIVATION: Integration of viruses into infected host cell DNA can cause DNA damage and disrupt genes. Recent cost reductions and growth of whole genome sequencing has produced a wealth of data in which viral presence and integration detection is possible. While key research and clinically relevant insights can be uncovered, existing software has not achieved widespread adoption, limited in part due to high computational costs, the inability to detect a wide range of viruses, as well as precision and sensitivity. RESULTS: Here, we describe VIRUSBreakend, a high-speed tool that identifies viral DNA presence and genomic integration. It utilizes single breakends, breakpoints in which only one side can be unambiguously placed, in a novel virus-centric variant calling and assembly approach to identify viral integrations with high sensitivity and a near-zero false discovery rate. VIRUSBreakend detects viral integrations anywhere in the host genome including regions such as centromeres and telomeres unable to be called by existing tools. Applying VIRUSBreakend to a large metastatic cancer cohort, we demonstrate that it can reliably detect clinically relevant viral presence and integration including HPV, HBV, MCPyV, EBV and HHV-8.
