Abstract

Precise instrumental calibration is of crucial importance to 21-cm cosmology experiments. The Murchison Widefield Array's (MWA) Phase II compact configuration offers us opportunities for both redundant calibration and sky-based calibration algorithms; using the two in tandem is a potential approach to mitigate calibration errors caused by inaccurate sky models. The MWA Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiment targets three patches of the sky (dubbed EoR0, EoR1, and EoR2) with deep observations. Previous work in Li et al. (2018) and (2019) studied the effect of tandem calibration on the EoR0 field and found that it yielded no significant improvement in the power spectrum (PS) over sky-based calibration alone. In this work, we apply similar techniques to the EoR1 field and find a distinct result: The improvements in the PS from tandem calibration are significant. To understand this result, we analyse both the calibration solutions themselves and the effects on the PS over three nights of EoR1 observations. We conclude that the presence of the bright radio galaxy Fornax A in EoR1 degrades the performance of sky-based calibration, which in turn enables redundant calibration to have a larger impact. These results suggest that redundant calibration can indeed mitigate some level of model incompleteness error.

Abstract

An inexpensive device is described that stabilizes the wavelength of a commercial nanosecond-pulsed dye laser. The instrument monitors the frequency-dependent interference pattern that is generated when a portion of the dye laser output passes through an eternal Fabry-Perot etalon. In order to maintain a fixed wavelength, a personal computer adjusts the dye laser's grating position when the interference pattern indicates that a shift in laser wavelength has occurred. Tests indicate that this device reduces the drift of the laser's mean wavelength to, The design of feedback control system for stabilizing the wavelength of a pulsed dye laser. It could be placed outside the dye laser and without altering the laser's optical system. The arrangement consists of a 20 Hz YG682-20 Nd:YAG laser pumping a TDL 60 Moya cavity dye laser. It delivers 50 mJ pulses at a wavelength of 280 nm using a Rhodamine-590 dye. The feedback was used in tuning a laser to a narrow molecular transition. Results show that the long-term drift of the dye laser wavelength decreased by a factor of 30.

Abstract

The frequently occurring T-cell receptor delta (TCRD) deletions in precursor-B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (precursor-B-ALL) are assumed to be mainly caused by Vdelta2-Jalpha rearrangements. We designed a multiplex polymerase chain reaction tified clonal Vdelta2-Jalpha rearrangements in 141 of 339 (41%) childhood and 8 of 22 (36%) adult precursor-B-ALL. A significant proportion (44%) of Vdelta2-Jalpha rearrangements in childhood precursor-B-ALL were oligoclonal. Sequence analysis showed preferential usage of the Jalpha29 gene segment in 54% of rearrangements. The remaining Vdelta2-Jalpha rearrangements used 26 other Jalpha segments, which included 2 additional clusters, one involving the most upstream Jalpha segments (ie, Jalpha48 to Jalpha61; 23%) and the second cluster located around the Jalpha9 gene segment (7%). Real-time quantitative PCR studies of normal lymphoid cells showed that Vdelta2 rearrangements to upstream Jalpha segments occurred at low levels in the thymus (10(-2) to 10(-3)) and were rare (generally below 10(-3)) in B-cell precursors and mature T cells. Vdelta2-Jalpha29 rearrangements were virtually absent in normal lymphoid cells. The monoclonal Vdelta2-Jalpha rearrangements in precursor-B-ALL may serve as patient-specific targets for detection of minimal residual disease, because they show high sensitivity (10(-4) or less in most cases) and good stability (88% of rearrangements preserved at relapse).

The reaction of 10-60 eV O[sup +] ions with a silicon oxide thin film produces scattered O[sub 2][sup -]. Isotopic labeling experiments demonstrate that the O[sub 2][sup -] product is formed by an abstraction reaction and not by physical sputtering. Energy and angle resolved detection reveals a correlation between the scattered and incident particle momenta, indicative of a direct process in which the incoming oxygen atom reacts with an adsorbed oxygen atom through an Eley-Rideal mechanism. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Collisions of hyperthermal energy Br+(3P2) with Pt(1 1 1) produces scattered Br−(1S0) with a yield approaching 7%. The energy distribution of the scattered product exhibits an unusual dependence on the collision energy. Specifically, as the incident energy increases from 34 to 54 eV, the peak energy of scattered Br−(1S0) decreases. Furthermore, the anion yield reaches a sharp maximum when Br+(3P2) approaches the surface with 26 eV of translational energy. The unusual scattering behavior is attributed to a trajectory dependent collision-induced deformation of the lattice. The corresponding electronic perturbation evolves synchronously with the motion of the departing projectile – leading to an enhanced charge-transfer probability. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A beam of 5 eV O+ reactively etches a decanethiolate/Au(1 1 1) self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Ion-induced modifications of the SAM are monitored in situ by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at different stages during the O+ dose. Approximately 3.8 carbon atoms are removed when 10 O+ ions strike a decanethiolate molecule; furthermore, 18% of the incident oxygen ions become trapped in the SAM. This facile reactivity is directly compared to that observed for thermal O(3P) incident on an alkanethiolate SAM and to hyperthermal O(3P) bombarding various polymeric films.
