Concentration measurements of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2), nitrous acid (HONO), nitric acid (HNO3), formaldehyde (HCHO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), formic acid (HCOOH) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) were performed in air filtered through the pore spaces of the surface snowpack (firn air) at Summit, Greenland, in summer 2000. In general, firn air concentrations of NO, NO2, HONO, HCHO, HCOOH, and CH3COOH were enhanced compared to concentrations in the atmospheric boundary layer above the snow. Only HNO3 and H 2O2 normally exhibited lower concentrations in the firn air. In most cases differences were highest during the day and lowest during nighttime hours. Shading experiments showed a good agreement with a photochemical NOx source in the surface snow. Patterns of H 2O2, CH3COOH, and HNO3 observed within the surface snow-firn air system imply that the number of molecules in the snow greatly exceeded that in the firn air. Deduced partitioning indicates that the largest fractions of the acids were present at the ice grain-air interface. In all cases, the number of molecules located at the interface was significantly higher than the amount in the firn air. Therefore, snow surface area and surface coverage are important parameters, which must be considered for the interpretation of firn air concentrations. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photochemical release of iodine from snow has been suggested as a source of reactive iodine to the Arctic atmosphere, however understanding of the underlying mechanism and potential source strength is hindered by a lack of measurements of iodine concentration and speciation in snow. Moreover, the origin of snow iodine is also unknown. Here, we report iodine speciation measurements in Arctic snow on sea ice at a range of snow depths from 177 samples, representing 80 sampling events, from December 2019 to October 2020 collected during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. We demonstrate that while there appears to be a source of iodine, in particular iodate, to the base of the snow over first year ice, this does not influence iodine concentration in the surface snow. There is instead evidence of a top-down source of iodine, potentially from iodine-enriched marine aerosol, as well as some evidence for episodic influx of iodate with dust. The potential for photochemical release of molecular iodine (I 2 ) from iodide in surface snow was investigated, and it was demonstrated that this could provide an iodine emission flux to the Arctic atmosphere comparable to oceanic fluxes. Knowledge of the prevalence and speciation of iodine in Arctic snow will contribute to better understanding of its contribution to observed concentrations of polar iodine oxide (IO), and hence its contribution to the depletion of tropospheric ozone in the Arctic.

Atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the Arctic exhibit a clear summertime maximum, while the origin of this peak is still a matter of debate in the community. Based on summertime observations during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition and a modeling approach, we further investigate the sources of atmospheric Hg in the central Arctic. Simulations with a generalized additive model (GAM) show that long-range transport of anthropogenic and terrestrial Hg from lower latitudes is a minor contribution (~2%), and more than 50% of the explained GEM variability is caused by oceanic evasion. A potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis further shows that oceanic evasion is not significant throughout the ice-covered central Arctic Ocean but mainly occurs in the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) due to the specific environmental conditions in that region. Our results suggest that this regional process could be the leading contributor to the observed summertime GEM maximum. In the context of rapid Arctic warming and the observed increase in width of the MIZ, oceanic Hg evasion may become more significant and strengthen the role of the central Arctic Ocean as a summertime source of atmospheric Hg., (© 2023. Chlorine radicals are strong atmospheric oxidants known to play an important role in the depletion of surface ozone and the degradation of methane in the Arctic troposphere. Initial oxidation processes of chlorine produce chlorine oxides, and it has been speculated that the final oxidation steps lead to the formation of chloric (HClO 3 ) and perchloric (HClO 4 ) acids, although these two species have not been detected in the atmosphere. Here, we present atmospheric observations of gas-phase HClO 3 and HClO 4 . Significant levels of HClO 3 were observed during springtime at Greenland (Villum Research Station), Ny-Ålesund research station and over the central Arctic Ocean, on-board research vessel Polarstern during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) campaign, with estimated concentrations up to 7 × 10 6 molecule cm -3 . The increase in HClO 3 , concomitantly with that in HClO 4 , was linked to the increase in bromine levels. These observations indicated that bromine chemistry enhances the formation of OClO, which is subsequently oxidized into HClO 3 and HClO 4 by hydroxyl radicals. HClO 3 and HClO 4 are not photoactive and therefore their loss through heterogeneous uptake on aerosol and snow surfaces can function as a previously missing atmospheric sink for reactive chlorine, thereby reducing the chlorine-driven oxidation capacity in the Arctic boundary layer. Despite the key role of the Arctic in the global Earth system, year-round in-situ atmospheric composition observations within the Arctic are sparse and mostly rely on measurements at ground-based coastal stations. Measurements of a suite of in-situ trace gases were performed in the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition. These observations give a comprehensive picture of year-round near-surface atmospheric abundances of key greenhouse and trace gases, i.e., carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, dimethylsulfide, sulfur dioxide, elemental mercury, and selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Redundancy in certain measurements supported continuity and permitted cross-evaluation and validation of the data. This paper gives an overview of the trace gas measurements conducted during MOSAiC and highlights the high quality of the monitoring activities. Photochemical reactions in snow can have an important impact on the composition of the atmosphere over snow-covered areas as well as on the composition of the snow itself. One of the major photochemical processes is the photolysis of nitrate leading to the formation of volatile nitrogen compounds. We report nitrite concentrations determined together with nitrate and hydrogen peroxide in surface snow collected at the coastal site of Barrow, Alaska. The results demonstrate that nitrite likely plays a significant role as a precursor for reactive hydroxyl radicals as well as volatile nitrogen oxides in the snow. Pollution events leading to high concentrations of nitrous acid in the atmosphere contributed to an observed increase in nitrite in the surface snow layer during nighttime. Observed daytime nitrite concentrations are much higher than values predicted from steady-state concentrations based on photolysis of nitrate and nitrite indicating that we do not fully understand the production of nitrite and nitrous acid in snow. The discrepancy between observed and expected nitrite concentrations is probably due to a combination of factors, including an incomplete understanding of the reactive environment and chemical processes in snow, and a lack of consideration of the vertical structure of snow.

A reaction mechanism to reproduce photochemical processes in the snow is reported. We developed a box model to represent snow chemistry. Constrained by laboratory experiments carried out with artificial snow, we deduced first a reaction mechanism for N-containing species including 13 reactions. An optimization tool was developed to adjust systematically unknown photolysis rates of nitrate and nitrite (NO(2)(-)) and transfer rates of nitrogen oxides from the snow to the gas phase resulting in an optimum fit with respect to the experimental data. Further experiments with natural snow samples are presented, indicating that NO(2)(-) concentrations were much lower than in the artificial snow experiments. These observations were used to extend the reaction mechanism into a more general scheme including hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and formaldehyde (HCHO) chemistry leading to a set of 18 reactions. The simulations indicate the importance of H(2)O(2) and HCHO as either a source or sink of hydroxyl radicals in the snow photochemistry mechanism. The addition of H(2)O(2) and HCHO in the mechanism allows the reproduction of the observed low NO(2)(-) concentration.

Levels and patterns of C1-C4/C9 organic nitrates were measured for the first time in Antarctica. The sampling was done by adsorptive enrichment on Tenax TA followed by thermodesorption cold-trap high resolution capillary gas chromatography with electron capture detection. 2-70 1 air on-column have been analyzed this way. C1-C9 alkyl mononitrates, C2-C4 alkyl dinitrates, C2-C4 hydroxy alkyl nitrates, and halocarbons could be identified in air samples collected near the German Neumayer Research Station, Antarctica, in February 1999. Volatile biogenic and anthropogenic halocarbons were used to assess the origin of the air parcels analyzed. The average concentration measured for sigmaC2-C6 alkyl nitrates was in the range of 9.2 +/- 1.8 ppt(v), while the sum of the mixing ratios of six C2-C4 hydroxy alkyl nitrates was in the range of 1.1 +/- 0.2 ppt(v). Moreover, C2-C4 alkyl dinitrates were found at levels near the detection limit of 0.1-0.5 ppt(v). The concentrations of organic nitrates found in Antarctic air represent ultimate baseline levels due to chemical and physical loss processes during long-range transport in the air. The South Atlantic and the Antarctic Ocean as a general secondary source for organic nitrates in terms of an air/sea exchange equilibrium has to be evaluated yet, but it seems logical. Our results confirm the common assumption that there are no biogenic marine sources of C2-C9 organonitrates. We have found a level of > 80 ppt(v) for methyl nitrate. This level if it can be confirmed in a systematic survey requires a strong biogenic source of methyl nitrate in the Antarctic Ocean.

Nitrate radical (NO(3)) reactions with benzene (R-1), toluene (R-2), p-xylene (R-3), p-cresol (R-4) and mesitylene (R-5) have been studied by laser photolysis/long path laser absorption (LP-LPLA) in aqueous solution. Rate constants of k(1)=(4.0+/-0.6). 10(8), k(2)=(1.2+/-0.3). 10(9), k(3)=(1.6+/-0.1). 10(9), k(4)= (8.4+/-2.3). 10(8) and k(5)=(1.3+/-0.3). 10(9) lmol(-1)s(-1) were obtained at T=298 K. In addition, reaction rate coefficients for SO(-)(5)+Fe(2+)-->prod. (R-6) and SO(-)(5)+Mn(2+)-->prod. (R-7) of k(6)=(4.3+/-2.4). 10(7) lmol(-1)s(-1) and k(7)=(4.6+/-1.0). 10(6) lmol(-1)s(-1) (T=298 K, I-->0) have been obtained by the application of laser photolysis/UV-VIS broadband diode array spectroscopy. A new laser photolysis/UV-long path laser absorption experiment has been applied to study the reaction of the Cl(-)(2) radical anion with dissolved sulfur(IV). For the reactions Cl(-)(2)+HSO(-)(3)-->2Cl(-)+H(+)+SO(-)(3) (R-8) and Cl(-)(2)+SO(2-)(3)-->2Cl(-)+SO(-)(3) (R-9) rate coefficients of k(8)=(1.7+/-0.2). 10(8) lmol(-1)s(-1) (T=298 K, I-->0) and of k(9)=(6.2+/-0.3). 10(7) lmol(-1)s(-1) (T=279 K, I-->0) were obtained.
