The properties of a dual-temperature resonant chamber to be used for acoustical levitation and positioning have been theoretically and experimentally studied. The predictions of a first-order dissipationless treatment of the generalized wave equation for an inhomogeneous medium are in close agreement with experimental results for the temperature dependence of the resonant mode spectrum and the acoustic pressure distribution, although the measured magnitude of the pressure variations does not correlate well with the calculated one. Ground-based levitation of low-density samples has been demonstrated at 800 C, where steady-state forces up to 700 dyn were generated.

A method is described which uses acoustic energy to separate particles of different sizes, densities, or the like. The method includes applying acoustic energy resonant to a chamber containing a liquid of gaseous medium to set up a standing wave pattern that includes a force potential well wherein particles within the well are urged towards the center, or position of minimum force potential. A group of particles to be separated is placed in the chamber, while a non-acoustic force such as gravity is applied, so that the particles separate with the larger or denser particles moving away from the center of the well to a position near its edge and progressively smaller lighter particles moving progressively closer to the center of the well. Particles are removed from different positions within the well, so that particles are separated according to the positions they occupy in the well.

A covariance analysis has been performed for the proposed QUASAT, an earth orbiting radio telescope. Conventional (Doppler and range) and advanced (diifferenced and doubly differenced one-way range) radio metric data types are used to evaluate the navigation accuracy that can be achieved. It is found that the mission requirements are met by conventional data types, while advanced data types can provide an order of magnitude improvement with less measurements, provided the three NASA DSN stations are augmented by more closely spaced stations.

Sample moved to different positions for heating and quenching. Acoustical levitation chamber selectively excited in fundamental and second-harmonic longitudinal modes to hold sample at one of three stable postions: A, B, or C. Levitated object quickly moved from one of these positions to another by changing modes. Object rapidly quenched at A or C after heating in furnace region at B.

Certain chamber shapes require fewer than three acoustic drivers. Levitation at center of spherical chamber attained using only one acoustic driver. Exitation of lowest spherical mode produces asymmetric acoustic potential well.

An object within a chamber is acoustically moved by applying wavelengths of different modes to the chamber to move the object between pressure wells formed by the modes. In one system, the object is placed in one end of the chamber while a resonant mode, applied along the length of the chamber, produces a pressure well at the location. The frequency is then switched to a second mode that produces a pressure well at the center of the chamber, to draw the object. When the object reaches the second pressure well and is still traveling towards the second end of the chamber, the acoustic frequency is again shifted to a third mode (which may equal the first model) that has a pressure well in the second end portion of the chamber, to draw the object. A heat source may be located near the second end of the chamber to heat the sample, and after the sample is heated it can be cooled by moving it in a corresponding manner back to the first end of the chamber. The transducers for levitating and moving the object may be all located at the cool first end of the chamber.

Method of acoustic levitation supports objects at positions other than acoustic nodes. Acoustic force is varied so it balances gravitational (or other) force, thereby maintaining object at any position within equilibrium range. Levitation method applicable to containerless processing. Such objects as table-tennis balls, hollow plastic spheres, and balsa-wood spheres levitated in laboratory by new method.

The resonance frequency shift of an acoustic rectangular chamber due to the presence of a rigid sphere has been measured for l = 1,2 modes as a function of sphere size and position. The frequency shift is the results of volume exclusion and wave scattering. An analytical Green's function calculation was used to explain the data, providing excellent agreement between the measured and the calculated values. Also reported are similar measurements for a thin disk and the ratio of second harmonic to fundamental pressure as a function of sphere position. The measurement shows that the sphere reduces the first harmonic content, with sharply peaked suppression minima at specific sphere positions.

Methods are described for acoustically levitating objects within chambers of spherical and cylindrical shape. The wavelengths for chambers of particular dimensions are given, for generating standing wave patterns of any of a variety of modes within the chambers. For a spherical chamber the lowest resonant mode is excited by applying a wavelength of 3.02R, where R is the chamber radius. The two lowest pure radial modes for that chamber, are excited by applying wavelengths of 1.40R and 0.814R. For a cylindrical chamber of radius R, the lowest mode is at a wavelength of 3.41R, and the lowest pure radial modes are at wavelengths of 1.64R and 0.896R.

A 2.5 cm diameter water drop was successfully deployed and manipulated in a triaxial acoustic resonance chamber during a 240 sec low-gravity SPAR rocket flight. Oscillation and rotation were induced by modulating and phase shifting the signals to the speakers. Portions of the film record were digitized and analyzed. Spectral analysis brought out the n = 2, 3, 4 free oscillation modes of the drop, its very low-frequency center-of-mass motion in the acoustic potential well, and the forced oscillation frequency. The drop boundaries were least-square fitted to general ellipses, providing eccentricities of the distorted drop. The normalized equatorial area of the rotating drop was plotted vs a rotational parameter, and was in excellent agreement with values derived from the theory of equilibrium shapes of rotating liquid drops.

The acoustic radiation force on a rigid sphere has been measured in a resonance chamber for a range of pressures, positions, sizes, and for various gases. In the low to medium intensity region of less than 150 dB, the measured force is consistent with King's theory (1934) when analyzed in terms of the fundamental pressure. However, in the high intensity region of greater than 150 dB, the measured force starts to deviate systematically from King's calculations.

The formalism of Boehm and Yaris is used to evaluate explicitly the leading term of the London dispersion force between closed-shell atoms. Instead of using the usual multipole expansion, which breaks down at intermediate internuclear distances, an analytic representation of the Born amplitude together with a general angular momentum analysis is used. As a result, expressions are obtained which reduce to the usual dispersion forces at large distances and are finite at all distances.

A formalism was developed for temperature-dependent, self-consistent phonons in quantum solids with defects. Lattice vacancies and interstitials in solid helium and metallic hydrogen, as well as electronic excitations in solid helium, were treated as defects that modify properties of these systems. The information to be gained from the modified phonon spectrum is discussed.

In preparation for forthcoming studies on materials processing in space, techniques and equipment are being developed for the deployment and control of large globules of liquid in a zero-g environment. This paper first presents a theoretical analysis of the intense sound field within an enclosure by which positioning forces, torques, and temporal perturbations may be applied to a sample. Procedures for digital analysis of photographic records of the sample motion are described. Results on the mean and oscillatory motion of a 2.5 cm diameter water drop during the flight of a SPAR rocket are given. In particular, spectral analysis shows that the drop oscillates at several frequencies. Identification with theoretically expected modes is made for some of the spectral lines.

A simple cell model is used to compute the ground-state energy and the volume-pressure relation for hcp He-4, in good agreement with experiments and with more sophisticated quantum mechanical calculations.

A specific heat anomaly in PdH and PdD has been observed by Aston et al. (1957) close to 55 K. Its position was found to be independent of hydrogen concentration and its magnitude to be linear in hydrogen concentration. Ferguson's (1965) and Brodowsky's (1972) explanations of the anomaly are shown to be unsatisfactory. This is true also for the detailed mechanical statistical model proposed by Staford and McLellan (1974) for interstitial solid solutions of hydrogen in transition metals. It is shown that Gopal's (1966) simple Schottky model of specific heat anomaly, which considers a system of several levels with Boltzmann statistics, provides much better agreement with experiment than the more elaborate models, both in magnitude and in predicting a linear dependence on hydrogen concentration.
