Bright basal reflectors in radargram from the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) of the Martian south polar layered deposits (SPLD) have been interpreted to be evidence of subglacial lakes. However, this interpretation is difficult to reconcile with the low Martian geothermal heat flow and the frigid surface temperature at the south pole. We conduct a comprehensive thermophysical evolution modeling of the SPLD and show that subglacial lakes may only form under exceptional circumstances. Subglacial lakes may form if the SPLD contains more than 60 % dust volumetrically or extremely porous ice (>30 %), which is unlikely. A thick (>100 m) layer of dirty ice (>90% dust) at the base of the SPLD may also enable basal melting, resembling a sludge instead of a lake. Heat flow measurements are important for our understanding of planetary interior composition, structure, and evolution. In the absence of direct measurement, a first‐order estimate of a planet's interior heat flow can be made by modeling the lithosphere's viscoelastic response to stress exerted by large surface loads. Here, we model the Martian lithosphere's viscoelastic response to the south polar layered deposits and estimate the local mantle heat flow to be less than ∼10 mW/m². Combined with our previous estimate of the low mantle heat flow from the north polar region (∼7 mW/m²), our results suggest that the Martian mantle may be globally depleted in heat‐producing elements. The relatively low mantle heat flow has significant implications for Mars' long‐term thermal evolution and on the possibility of basal melting in the south polar region.

Geothermal basal melting of thick ice sheets may solve the faint young Sun paradox on Mars., In explaining extensive evidence for past liquid water, the debate on whether Mars was primarily warm and wet or cold and arid 4 billion years (Ga) ago has continued for decades. The Sun’s luminosity was ~30% lower 4 Ga ago; thus, most martian climate models struggle to elevate the mean surface temperature past the melting point of water. Basal melting of ice sheets may help resolve that paradox. We modeled the thermophysical evolution of ice and estimate the geothermal heat flux required to produce meltwater on a cold, arid Mars. We then analyzed geophysical and geochemical data, showing that basal melting would have been feasible on Mars 4 Ga ago. If Mars were warm and wet 4 Ga ago, then the geothermal flux would have even sustained hydrothermal activity. Regardless of the actual nature of the ancient martian climate, the subsurface would have been the most habitable region on Mars.

From orbit, the visibility of Titan's surface is limited to a handful of narrow spectral windows in the near-infrared (near-IR), primarily from the absorption of methane gas. This has limited the ability to identify specific compounds on the surface -- to date Titan's bulk surface composition remains unknown. Further, understanding of the surface composition would provide insight into geologic processes, photochemical production and evolution, and the biological potential of Titan's surface. One approach to obtain wider spectral coverage with which to study Titan's surface is by decreasing the integrated column of absorbers (primarily methane) and scatterers between the observer and the surface. This is only possible if future missions operate at lower altitudes in Titan's atmosphere. Herein, we use a radiative transfer model to measure in detail the absorption through Titan's atmosphere from different mission altitudes, and consider the impacts this would have for interpreting reflectance measurements of Titan's surface. Over our modeled spectral range of 0.4 - 10 micron, we find that increases in the width of the transmission windows as large as 317% can be obtained for missions performing remote observations at the surface. However, any appreciable widening of the windows requires onboard illumination. Further, we make note of possible surface compounds that are not currently observable from orbit, but could be identified using the wider windows at low altitudes. These range from simple nitriles such as cyanoacetylene, to building blocks of amino acids such as urea. Landslides are among the most widespread geologic features on Ceres. Using data from Dawn's Framing Camera, landslides were previously classified based upon geomorphologic characteristics into one of three archetypal categories, Type 1(T1), Type 2 (T2), and Type 3 (T3). Due to their geologic context, variation in age, and physical characteristics, most landslides on Ceres are, however, intermediate in their morphology and physical properties between the archetypes of each landslide class. Here we describe the varied morphology of individual intermediate landslides, identify geologic controls that contribute to this variation, and provide first‐order quantification of the physical properties of the continuum of Ceres's surface flows. These intermediate flows appear in varied settings and show a range of characteristics, including those found at contacts between craters, those having multiple trunks or lobes; showing characteristics of both T2 and T3 landslides; material slumping on crater rims; very small, ejecta‐like flows; and those appearing inside of catenae. We suggest that while their morphologies can vary, the distribution and mechanical properties of intermediate landslides do not differ significantly from that of archetypal landslides, confirming a link between landslides and subsurface ice. We also find that most intermediate landslides are similar to Type 2 landslides and formed by shallow failure. Clusters of these features suggest ice enhancement near Juling, Kupalo and Urvara craters. We investigate the structure and evolution of multiphase ice-ocean interfaces (‘mushy layers’) and the implications for the geophysics and habitability of ice-ocean worlds. Understanding the potential diversity of these multiphase layers across solar system bodies provides insight into the potential rates and mechanisms of heat and solute transport between their respective oceans and ice shells - which remain largely unconstrained. Additionally, variations in mushy layer properties may drive diverse geophysical processes unique to individual bodies or that may vary regionally on an individual icy world. We explore mushy layer evolution by analytically solving for the thickness of a simplified ice-ocean mushy layer system. We investigate two dynamic regimes, one driven by molecular diffusion and one driven by convection of brine within the mushy layer. We analyze the impact of gravity, thermal gradient, and ocean composition on the thickness of mushy layers. Additionally, a perturbation analysis is carried out to investigate the existence of mushy layer steady states. We show that stable mushy layers exist when ice shells are thickening, suggesting that mushy layers are likely persistent and common features of growing ice shells and accretionary regions of ice-ocean worlds.

Exploration of the furthest reaches of our planet, as well as other planetary bodies, typically requires the use of robotic platforms due to the extreme environments encountered. Some of the harshest conditions on earth are found in Antarctica and require the use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to explore remote and hazardous areas beneath the ice. The custom-built Icefin under-ice unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) has been developed for deployment in permanently ice-covered oceans, such as those found in Antarctica, with the intent of furthering relevant technology for future missions to Europa, a moon of Jupiter with an icecovered ocean. The design of the vehicle flows from program requirements that provide a road map for maximizing scientific data collection with the low-risk and low-logistical impact needed for polar science. Lessons learned from Antarctic deployment of the Icefin vehicle can be extrapolated for future polar AUV design.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma from the Sun that play an important role in space weather. Faraday rotation (FR) is the rotation of the plane of polarization that results when a linearly polarized signal passes through a magnetized plasma such as a CME. FR observations of a source near the Sun can provide information on the plasma structure of a CME shortly after launch. We report on simultaneous white-light and radio observations made of three CMEs in August 2012. We made sensitive Very Large Array (VLA) full-polarization observations using 1 - 2 GHz frequencies of a "constellation" of radio sources through the solar corona at heliocentric distances that ranged from 6 - 15 solar radii. Of the nine sources observed, three were occulted by CMEs: two sources (0842+1835 and 0900+1832) were occulted by a single CME and one source (0843+1547) was occulted by two CMEs. In addition to our radioastronomical observations, which represent one of the first active hunts for CME Faraday rotation since Bird et al. (1985) and the first active hunt using the VLA, we obtained white-light coronagraph images from the LASCO/C3 instrument to determine the Thomson scattering brightness, BT, providing a means to independently estimate the plasma density and determine its contribution to the observed Faraday rotation. A constant density force-free flux rope embedded in the background corona was used to model the effects of the CMEs on BT and FR. We demonstrate this model's ability to successfully reproduce both BT and FR profiles. The plasma densities (6 - 22 x 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$) and axial magnetic field strengths (2 - 12 mG) inferred from our models are consistent with the modeling work of Liu et al. (2007) and Jensen & Russell (2008), as well as previous CME FR observations by Bird et al. (1985)., This is a pre-print of an article submitted to Solar Physics: 82 pages, 10 figures

The Icefin vehicle is a novel, custom under-ice unmanned underwater vehicle. This vehicle was designed for polar sub-ice deployment and was deployed to McMurdo, Antarctica in November of 2014. An overview of the unique vehicle design is presented here, along with a summary of the deployment testing in Antarctica. Lessons learned from this deployment provided an opportunity for design improvements to the vehicle. An updated vehicle design is presented including the changes resulting from polar sub-ice field testing.

Many competing models for the coronal heating and acceleration mechanisms of the high-speed solar wind depend on the solar magnetic field and plasma structure in the corona within heliocentric distances of 5 R {sub ☉}. We report on sensitive Very Large Array (VLA) full-polarization observations made in 2011 August, at 5.0 and 6.1 GHz (each with a bandwidth of 128 MHz) of the radio galaxy 3C 228 through the solar corona at heliocentric distances of 4.6-5.0 R {sub ☉}. Observations at 5.0 GHz permit measurements deeper in the corona than previous VLA observations at 1.4 and 1.7 GHz. These Faraday rotation observations provide unique information on the magnetic field in this region of the corona. The measured Faraday rotation on this day was lower than our a priori expectations, but we have successfully modeled the measurement in terms of observed properties of the corona on the day of observation. Our data on 3C 228 provide two lines of sight (separated by 46'', 33,000 km in the corona). We detected three periods during which there appeared to be a difference in the Faraday rotation measure between these two closely spaced lines of sight. These measurements (termed differential Faraday rotation) yield anmore » estimate of 2.6-4.1 GA for coronal currents. Our data also allow us to impose upper limits on rotation measure fluctuations caused by coronal waves; the observed upper limits were 3.3 and 6.4 rad m{sup –2} along the two lines of sight. The implications of these results for Joule heating and wave heating are briefly discussed.« less

A growing number of satellites in the outer solar system likely have global oceans beneath their outer icy shells. While the presence of liquid water makes these ocean worlds compelling astrobiological targets, the exchange of heat and materials between the deep interior and the surface also plays a critical role in promoting habitable environments. In this article, we combine geophysical, geochemical, and geological observations of the Jovian satellites Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto as well as the Saturnian satellites Enceladus and Titan to summarize our current state of understanding of their interiors and surface exchange processes. Potential mechanisms for driving exchange processes upward from the ocean floor and downward from the satellite surface are then reviewed, which are primarily based on numerical models of ice shell and ocean dynamics and complemented by terrestrial analog studies. Future missions to explore these exo-oceans will further revolutionize our understanding of ice-ocean exchange processes and their implications for the habitability of these worlds.
