By 1909 these readings fade into the background of Pessoa’s radical skepticism and the dramatization of his intellectual pursuit of the absolute.

Effective conservation of endangered North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis requires information about their spatio-temporal distribution. Understanding temporal distribution is particularly important, because a portion of the population migrates between high-latitude summer feeding grounds off the northeastern USA and Canadian Maritimes coasts and lower-latitude calving and wintering grounds off the southeastern US coast (SEUS). Here, we modeled SEUS residence patterns using photo-identification data from coastal South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida from 7 winter seasons (2004/2005-2010/2011). We used multistate open robust design models to evaluate effects of reproductive status, demographic group, and environmental conditions on SEUS residence. Model estimates accounted for temporal variation and imperfect detection and provided probabilities of entering the SEUS, staying in the SEUS, and being sighted in the SEUS. We also derived estimates for residence time and seasonal abundance. We observed staggered arrival and departure patterns and demographic differences in residence patterns that are characteristic of a differential migration strategy. Calving females arrived earliest and, in most seasons, had mean residence periods more than twice as long as other demographic groups. Conversely, adult males arrived the latest and had the shortest residence times. Within-season detection was positively influenced by survey effort, and overall seasonal mean (±SE) detection rate estimates ranged from 0.83 ± 0.08 for non-calving adult females to 0.98 ± 0.02 for calving females. Results provide insights into right whale behavior, biology, and temporal distribution in the SEUS and can be used to evaluate spatially and temporally dynamic management measures.

Fernando Pessoa devoured English literature in his early education in South Africa, and his early fictitious author Alexander Search wrote around 115 poems in imitation of poets from Wyatt to Byron, before and after Pessoa's return to Lisbon in 1905. Search's reading of English poetry across time, his imitation of variable styles in English, and his search for an aesthetic ideal characterize a youthful period of voluptuous reading and skeptical despair that may be compared to FitzGerald's pursuit of classical translation through poetic imagination

A newly-found typescript of 47 pages of "The Mad Fiddler" belonging to Pessoa's niece, Manuela Nogueira, is described and compared to two other typescripts in the Pessoa Archive held at the National Library of Portugal. The place of the typescript in the history of the composition of the poems of "The Mad Fiddler" is relevant, since it contains a few variants and likely precedes the version considered to be definitive in the critical edition (Imprensa Nacional-Casa de Moeda, Lisbon, 1999)

Abstract Background Initiation of ART among people living with HIV (PLWH) having a CD4 count ≤ 350cells/µl, produces poor immunological recovery, putting them at a high risk of opportunistic infections. To mitigate this, PLWH on ART in Uganda frequently use herbal remedies like Artemisia annua and Moringa oleifera, but their clinical benefits and potential antiretroviral (ARV) interactions remain unknown. This study examined the impact of A. annua and M. oleifera on CD4 count, viral load, and potential ARV interactions among PLWH on ART at an HIV clinic in Uganda. Methods 282 HIV-positive participants on antiretroviral therapy (ART) with a CD4 count ≤ 350cells/µl were randomized in a double-blind clinical trial to receive daily, in addition to their routine standard of care either; 1) A. annua leaf powder, 2) A. annua plus M. oleifera, and 3) routine standard of care only. Change in the CD4 count at 12 months was our primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included changes in viral load, complete blood count, and ARV plasma levels. Participants were followed up for a year and outcomes were measured at baseline, 6 and 12 months. This study develops a method to use deep learning models to predict the mineral assemblages and their relative abundances in paleolake cores using high-resolution XRF core scan elemental data and X-ray diffraction (XRD) mineralogical results from the same core taken at coarser resolution. It uses the XRF core scan data along with published mineralogical information from the Olduvai Gorge Coring Project (OGCP) 2014 sediment cores 1A, 2A, and 3A from Paleolake Olduvai, Tanzania. Both regression and classification models were developed using a Keras deep learning framework to assess the predictability of mineral assemblages with their relative abundances (in regression models) or at least the mineral assemblages (in classification models) using XRF core scan data. Models were created using the Sequential class and Functional API with different model architectures. The correlation matrix of element ratios calculated from XRF element intensity records from the cores and XRD-derived mineralogical information was used to select the most useful features to train the models. 1057 training data records were used for the models. Lithological classes were also used for some models using Wide & Deep neural networks since those combine the benefits of memorization and generalization for mineral prediction. The results were validated using 265 validation data records unseen by the model and discuss the accuracy of models using six test records. The optimized Deep Neural Network (DNN) classification model achieved over 86% binary accuracy while the regression models were also able to predict the relative mineral abundances of samples with high accuracies. Overall, the study shows the efficacy of a carefully crafted Deep Learning (DL) model for predicting mineral assemblages and abundances using high-resolution XRF core scan data.

The rising levels of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the poor medical effects of the commercially available antidiabetic drugs necessitate the development of potent analogs to treat this multifactorial metabolic disorder. It has been demonstrated that targeting two or more biochemical targets associated with the onset and progression of diabetes along with oxidative stress and/or cancer could be a significant strategy for treating complications related to this metabolic disorder. The 3,5-dibromo-4,6-dimethoxychalcones (2a–f) and the corresponding flavone derivatives (3a–f) were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic (NMR, HR-MS and FT-IR) techniques. The inhibitory effect of both series of compounds against α-glucosidase and α-amylase was evaluated in vitro through enzymatic assays. Selected compounds were also evaluated for potential to activate or inhibit superoxide dismutase. Compound 3c was selected as a representative model for the flavone series and evaluated spectrophotometrically for potential to coordinate Cu(II) and/or Zn(II) ions implicated in the metal-catalyzed free radical generation. A plausible mechanism for metal-chelation of the test compounds is presented. Furthermore, the most active compounds from each series against the test carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes were selected and evaluated for their antigrowth effect on the human breast (MCF-7) and lung (A549) cancer cell lines and for cytotoxicity against the African Green Monkey kidney (Vero) cell line. The parent chalcone 2a and flavone derivatives 3a, 3c and 3e exhibited relatively high inhibitory activity against the MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 4.12 ± 0.55, 8.50 ± 0.82, 5.10 ± 0.61 and 6.96 ± 0.66 μM, respectively. The chalcones 2a and 2c exhibited significant cytotoxicity against the A549 cells with IC50 values of 7.40 ± 0.67 and 9.68 ± 0.80 μM, respectively. Only flavone 3c exhibited relatively strong and comparable cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 and A549 cell lines with IC50 values of 6.96 ± 0.66 and 6.42 ± 0.79 μM, respectively. Both series of compounds exhibited strong activity against the MCF-7 and A549 cell lines compared to the analogous quercetin (IC50 = 35.40 ± 1.78 and 35.38 ± 1.78 μM, respectively) though moderate compared to nintedanib (IC50 = 0.53 ± 0.11 and 0.74 ± 0.15 μM, respectively). The test compounds generally exhibited reduced cytotoxicity against the Vero cells compared to this anticancer drug. Molecular docking revealed strong alignment of the test compounds with the enzyme backbone to engage in hydrogen bonding interaction/s and hydrophobic contacts with the residues in the active sites of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. The test compounds possess favorable drug-likeness properties, supporting their potential as therapeutic candidates against T2DM.

Background and objectivesCOVID-19 is highly infectious and the pandemic requires many adaptations to how we deliver medical care. Early in the pandemic, much of this focus was on hospital and emergency department care delivery models to ensure the safety of non-COVID-19 patients and health care workers. However, providing much needed outpatient assessments for COVID-19 patients during a pandemic is also fraught with challenges. From our review of the literature, best practices for a dedicated pandemic ambulatory outpatient clinic have not previously been described. We present a model for creating a dedicated ambulatory pandemic clinic at our institution for the acute care needs of COVID-19 patients.MethodsTo address the current pandemic, the Mayo Acute Symptoms of COVID-19 Clinic was implemented on April 13, 2020, with the aims of providing a stand-alone location for COVID-19 patients to have acute outpatient evaluations as well as diagnostics.ResultsRecognized challenges addressed included consideration of airflow recirculation patterns in standard medical office buildings, optimization of protocols to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE), limiting total exposure time during patient flow, and reducing surfaces and spaces that patients would physically contact. To this end, unique methods of patient scheduling, patient flow process, staff training, and PPE protocols were developed and are explained in detail in this article.ConclusionIn the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as inevitably in future pandemics, outpatient medical facilities need to be prepared to care for nonhospitalized and nonemergent pandemic patients. We offer a practical approach that has been successful at our institution, with opportunity for local adaptation based on need and resources.

Abstract Drug regulatory institutions, infrastructures, and systems are becoming increasingly interconnected across national boundaries and increasingly global in outlook. This process is reflected in the broadening and deepening application of the principles and practice of Regulatory Reliance, and parallel initiatives to strengthen the capacities of regulatory institutions in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Although these developments are important and constructive, they have tended to be framed in terms of the transfer of systems, knowledge, and skills from relatively “mature” regulatory agencies in high‐income countries (HICs) to less‐well‐resourced regulatory agencies in LMICs. This framing recognizes and foregrounds the considerable practical challenges that many LMIC regulatory agencies face, but in doing so, also backgrounds and underestimates the significance of the different contextual insights that LMIC health researchers and regulators can bring to the regulatory deliberations of their HIC counterparts. This position paper argues that the systematic pursuit, identification, and sharing of these different contextual insights—a dimension of regulatory science that we term “Regulatory Complementarity”—can augment the current practice and goals of Regulatory Reliance, and further invigorate the emerging global regulatory ecosystem.

The study of individual social relationships and group structure provides insights into a species' natural history and can inform management decisions for animals living in human care. The Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) center provides permanent sanctuary for a group of 14 Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri), a critically endangered and poorly studied subspecies of the genus gorilla, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We monitored the association patterns of the gorillas at GRACE over eight months and here describe their individual relationships and group structure via multiple social network statistics. The group was highly connected but associations between individuals were weak on average. Social network metrics describe that an adult female was the most gregarious and socially central individual within the group. In fact, adult females were the most gregarious and socially central on average. Group level association patterns were significantly correlated over the study period and across observation types, suggesting the group was socially stable during the eight month study period. The data collected in this study were done so by GRACE caregivers as part of their daily husbandry routine and provided important insights into this group's behavior, ultimately informing on their care, welfare and future release considerations. The methodological approaches implemented here are easily scalable to any primate sanctuary or care facility seeking to use data to inform husbandry and management procedures. Lastly, our study is the first social network analysis to be conducted on Grauer's gorillas and provides tentative insights into the behavior of this poorly studied subspecies. Though more research is needed to evaluate if the findings here are reflective of this subspecies' natural history or the idiosyncrasies of the group.

In tissues and organs, the extracellular matrix (ECM) helps maintain inter- and intracellular architectures that sustain the structure–function relationships defining physiological homeostasis. Combining fiber scaffolds and cells to form engineered tissues is a means of replicating these relationships. Engineered tissues' fiber scaffolds are designed to mimic the topology and chemical composition of the ECM network. Here, we asked how cells found in the heart compare in their propensity to align their cytoskeleton and self-organize in response to topological cues in fibrous scaffolds. We studied cardiomyocytes, valvular interstitial cells, and vascular endothelial cells as they adapted their inter- and intracellular architectures to the extracellular space. We used focused rotary jet spinning to manufacture aligned fibrous scaffolds to mimic the length scale and three-dimensional (3D) nature of the native ECM in the muscular, valvular, and vascular tissues of the heart. The representative cardiovascular cell types were seeded onto fiber scaffolds and infiltrated the fibrous network. We measured different cell types' propensity for cytoskeletal alignment in response to fiber scaffolds with differing levels of anisotropy. The results indicated that valvular interstitial cells on moderately anisotropic substrates have a higher propensity for cytoskeletal alignment than cardiomyocytes and vascular endothelial cells. However, all cell types displayed similar levels of alignment on more extreme (isotropic and highly anisotropic) fiber scaffold organizations. These data suggest that in the hierarchy of signals that dictate the spatiotemporal organization of a tissue, geometric cues within the ECM and cellular networks may homogenize behaviors across cell populations and demographics.

Composites printed using material extrusion additive manufacturing (AM) typically exhibit alignment of high-aspect-ratio reinforcements parallel to the print direction. This alignment leads to highly anisotropic stiffness, strength, and transport properties. In many cases, it would be desirable to increase mechanical and transport properties transverse to the print direction, for example, in 3D-printed heat sinks or heat exchangers where heat must be moved efficiently between printed roads or layers. Rotational direct ink writing (RDIW), where the deposition nozzle simultaneously rotates and translates during deposition, provides a method to reorient fibers transverse to the print direction during the printing process. In the present work, carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites were printed by RDIW with a range of nozzle rotation rates and the in-plane and through-thickness thermal conductivity was measured. In addition, the orientation of carbon fiber (CF) in the composites was measured using optical microscopy and image analysis, from which second-order fiber orientation tensors were calculated. These results showed that the orientation of CF became less anisotropic as nozzle rotation rate increased, leading to increased through-thickness thermal conductivity, which increased by 40% at the highest rotation rate. The orientation tensors also showed that RDIW was more effective at reorienting fibers within the in-plane transverse direction compared to the through-thickness transverse direction. The results presented here demonstrate that a current weakness of material extrusion AM composites—poor thermal conductivity in the through-thickness direction—can be significantly improved with RDIW.

Despite over two decades of progress against HIV/AIDS in adjacent sub-Saharan Africa, HIV rates and deaths due to AIDS are exponentially rising in Madagascar. Furthermore, a growing body of evidence suggests that, due to a scarcity of general-population screening data, even the startling increase demonstrated by official models vastly underestimates the true population prevalence of HIV. We aimed to implement a real-world HIV screening and treatment protocol to serve a general population stemming from across northern Madagascar. In collaboration with the Malagasy Ministry of Health, we provided point-of-care HIV screening and confirmatory testing for over 1000 participants from 73 towns, villages, and cities. We recorded an overall HIV prevalence of 2.94%. Notably, we observed a 13.1% HIV prevalence rate among urban populations and showed that proximity to a major route of travel was significantly associated with HIV risk. We also observed a link between HIV risk and various occupations, including those associated with increased mobility (such as mining). Importantly, all HIV-positive individuals were initiated on antiretroviral therapy in concordance with local health authorities. To our knowledge, this study marks the largest primary test data-based HIV study to date among Madagascar’s general population, showing a greatly higher HIV prevalence (2.9%) than previously reported modeling-based figures (0.4%). Our rates aligned with the pattern of higher prevalence demonstrated in smaller general-population screening studies occurring more commonly prior to political strife in the mid-2000s. These findings demonstrate evidence of a growing HIV epidemic in northern Madagascar and underscore the need for future investment into more comprehensive HIV screening and control initiatives in Madagascar.

Since the 1950s, the major American labor unions have pursued a strategy of cooperation rather than competition. Under Article XX of the AFL-CIO Constitution and similar “no-raid” agreements, unions may not encroach on one another’s established collective bargaining relationships. Some labor scholars have argued that these agreements likely harm unionized workers by diminishing union officials’ incentives to lower dues payments, innovate, or otherwise provide the best possible services for their members. To varying degrees, scholars have also blamed the longterm decline in private-sector union membership on a lack of competitive pressure. This Note analyzes Article XX and similar agreements from an antitrust perspective, analogizing them to anticompetitive market-division agreements. Unlike prior antitrust analyses of labor unions—which focus on the welfare of end consumers—I view workers as consumers of labor unions’ services and consider only their welfare as relevant. Counterarguments based on union democracy and labor history have some merit, but the current status quo of zero antitrust enforcement seems difficult to justify when, in most industries, an agreement like Article XX could be considered illegal per se. The federal antitrust agencies and classes of unionized workers might be able to challenge these agreements under the Sherman Act. Although labor’s statutory exemption from the antitrust laws is sometimes said to generally protect “selfinterest[ed]” union activities, a preliminary reading of the text and legislative history shows that the exemption might not protect activities that demonstrably harm workers. Although courts have not directly confronted the issue, at least some of the case law is compatible with this interpretation. In such cases, courts should balance any evidence of anticompetitive harm against evidence of benefits to workers, including benefits that are not normally cognizable in antitrust such as increased union density. This Note is not intended to downplay the uphill battle that unions currently face nor to argue that interunion rivalry is always desirable. Nonetheless, I am confident that targeted and careful application of the antitrust laws in specific markets could help increase the dynamism of organized labor and make unionization look like a better bet for unorganized workers.
